    This series is absolutely awesome! I've been singing for years now and got a very nice and clean voice, so being into metal I naturally wanted to learn vocal fry/false chord distortion. I've been able to do what you tought up until now already, but how you explained it still gave me so much more insight and a new perspective on how to practice my fry effectively. Not any other channel I've watched has been able to do this as well as you do and I'm really looking forward to the next vids.
    Also there are so many people explaining fry with compression and it always felt somewhat off, so I really love your emphasis on just reducing volume and being mindful of not compressing too much.
    Real props and much love to you. You rock!

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I find the fixation with compression weird... I understand why people do it and I understand that that is why most guys who do fry are in a fry + false vocal fold combo distortion. Still, why not learn fry by itself first and be lazier XD

    Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong? Whenever I try to sing in falsetto or fry really high (in my range), I get this tightness at the back of my mouth/under my jaw. When I try to fry, I reach that tightness a bit earlier, as in lower notes than I do when singing in falsetto. Also, I can only sing about 2,5-3 octaves, is that normal? 😕

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  11 месяцев назад +1

      2,5-3 octaves is completely normal. A 3 octave range is considered a large vocal range.
      Tightness at the back of the mouth/under jaw, sounds like it might be your tongue trying to help you out. Try placing your tongue on your lower lip, or stabilizing the tip of your tongue behind your bottom teeth and sticking the middle out. See if that addresses the sensation at all...

  • @The14Some1
    @The14Some1 3 года назад +1

    What if i'm able to hit highest notes only forcing em? I can't find such whistle register as you have, and it is completely impossible for me to quietly squeak like you do. The higher I go, the louder it becomes and stops at the point where i'm unable to produce enough volume and pressure. When i'm trying to sing without such volume/pressure i stop produce any sound something like an octave below in comparison to forcing approach.

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад

      This is very common. I would say work quietly and let it stop an octave lower. Keep at it and you'll uncover all that range. Volume and pressure aren't needed for most notes and this is the skill that singers need to develop :)

    Hi Aliki. Can you give examples of real world usage of such technique? I tend to think that it's very niche , something like 90s black metal or guy from Judas priest. Would be greatful for modern music scene examples .

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад +2

      For vocal fry, the best example is In This Moment (everything that isn't clean is fry). There are moments from Pantera & Lamb of God that are fry, AFI is fry (not metal but it doesn't matter, check out Kill Caustic). I would agree that it's not as common as people think it is...

    • @TheShmrsh
      @TheShmrsh 3 года назад

      @@AlikiKatriou it's not important if it's metal or not for me , i listen everything that is good music , it's just metal takes little bit more listen time. So i i checked afi and i totally get it. Refused uses it too for instance which somehow i didn't realized earlier even though i listened them alot. Deftones are fry too as far as i can tell. I actually really curious how Chino does incredibly high squicky screams , my guess is they are inhale actually.

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад

      @@TheShmrsh Could be inhales, doesn't have to be. After a certain pitch, inhale and exhales kind of sound identical XD

    • @The14Some1
      @The14Some1 3 года назад

      @@AlikiKatriou That's interesting. I'm able to make 7:44 fry on inhale, and it sounds exactly like you showed. But i'm completely unable to reproduce it exhale. I also can sing high pitched notes on inhale, and it doesn't feel difficult at all, whilst unable to sing them exhale (and the highest note on exhale is possible only through decent pushing). The difference is like 4-5 notes, maybe even an octave. I'm confused about this.

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад

      @@The14Some1 For many people, inhalations lead to a more precise vocal gesture. We realise that there is no point in sucking in the universe of air to make sounds. Most people though tend to blow out the universe when they try exhalations. If inhales work for you, you probably rely more on the vocal folds and less on the air on inhales :)

      probably

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  9 месяцев назад

      not necessarily... tickling is usually an indication of muscle tension - think of it as your body either using too much effort or too many muscles until it figure out how to be more efficient. Coughing is common in the beginning. I tend to think of coughing as your larynx's "autocorrect" response; basically your body thinks you're trying to do something else. That being said, you might be squeezing a tiny bit too much and slightly bringing in the false vocal folds, which would usually lead to coughing...

    Does the fry with less air work for normal singing too or just ornamental distortion? I seem to have problems holding notes if I use so little air as to engage low-air fry.

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад +1

      It works for normal singing too. It's challenging for the muscles to operate with little airflow, so give it time :)

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  3 года назад

      I would say that the position of your larynx affects the tonal quality of your sound. If you want a darker sound, you can lower your larynx. If you want a brighter sound, lift it. There is an old belief stemming from classical singing that the larynx most be lowered for singing to be "healthy". I think at this point historically, it is obvious this is not the case and there is a lot of research to back that up too.
      Look at singers you like. Can you see their Adam's apples? As much as I love metalheads and I love people learning to sing and giving feedback, it's always worth checking out what the dudes on stage are doing. I personally don't see a lot of Adam's apples being visible, which makes me hypothesize that they must be lifted...

    How to fry scream 101:
    step 1: get your fry
    step 2: pretend you're Janice from Friends
    step 3: get Janice on a metal band

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  2 года назад

      It is one way, especially if you want your fry to be high-pitched and piercing sounding. Imitating Janice would probably lead to twang. In the case of me talking about squeaking, I am targeting a slightly different muscle, but both certainly work - the sound would just be slightly different.

      Oh it's an obsession and a love. Other than that, it's because I want the interval distances to be smaller than major because I want the exercise to a) not feel like a huge stretch/leap and b) I want more precision from the vocal folds, in the sense of smaller muscular movements...
