All you REALLY need is a keyboard that can send MIDI and a cable to connect said MIDI port to your PC
With that,you can emulate every instrument in existance and if you snoop around a bit,the virtual instruments won't sound like garbage at all (there are like 3 great 'real drums' vsts and around the same for bass guitar,accoustic and regular E guitar)
Even a Casio WK1200 for $99 lets you command & control a virtual studio enviroment

however, you can get interesting results when you improvise.

it only works on native fl studio plugins though.

as i remember, reaper is free. its also simpler to learn.
