I’m coming from a 2017 iPad Pro so the new 2022 M2 iPad doesn’t feel stale to me. I think this may be the case for users upgrading iPads every year/model.
I entirely agree people complain about how stale apple is but their products are built to last and get so many updates that no one in their right minds updates every year but if you update every 4 to 6 years the difference is incredible
Me too but I am still conflicted as I really like Mini LED tech due to screen uniformity and minimal screen burn in but I want a larger screen real estate so holding on with the iPad Pro 2017 until the 2024 iPad Pro M3 which will be more power efficient and better RAM better long term investment since I don’t upgrade my iPad’s every 5 years at least. I hope I can bear with it 😅 and hold my wallet. 2024 feels very far.
I just upgraded from a 10.5 2017 iPad and I must say it was worth the years for a worthwhile upgrade. Me being a photographer and videographer this is perfect for me alongside my laptop. I can actually do my workflow on this device.
As an artist I draw hours a day and I love my m2 iPad Pro. The best device I could have for my workflow. Hover is great. It seems like you’re complaining how good it is.
I have this iPad and I think it’s a really good iPad. I recently upgraded to it coming from the iPad Pro 1st gen I’m loving new features I previously didn’t have and I love the fact this iPad will last 5-7 years because of the m2 chip
I was heartened to learn that basically all of your gripes could be countered depending on the buyer's use-case. For example, artists / graphic designers are definitely appreciating the hover, and more devs are implementing app use for it all the time. Folks who buy the cellular version and are doing away with a phone entirely will *absolutely* buy the correct peripherals to make use of the ProRes / HDR recording, should they need/want to use it while consolidating down their devices (y'know, this might be lost on the privileged, but perhaps not *_everyone_* can / wants to _also_ invest in an amazing mirrorless camera on the side?). Finally, we're already seeing the release of the gangbuster apps you mentioned like Final Cut Pro (and Logic Pro) coming onto this iPad, and it's inevitable that even more future software options will be able to make use of the M2's power. Folks like myself hardly ever buy tablets, and I'm content that this one's gonna last me a good, long time in *every* way that matters.
Hey! I hope you are enjoying your iPad sir, I want to ask, how is the iPad holding up so far? And how is the display on it? I’m really hesitant between it and the m4 iPad Pro 11 because of the display :P so if you would tell me about your experience with it so far it would be of great appreciation! :D
My last iPad was a 2016 model so the new iPad Pro is a beast compared to my old one. I think you forget that, most people upgrade every 3-5 yrs not every new iPad release.
I think the rumours are suggesting no updates until 2024. I agree that this is overpowered, I think owners will really see/feel the advantage in about 3 - 5 years when the extra power over the M1 will make a visible difference in day to day usage
I think ProRes video capturing would truly benefit to who mainly do video editing on an iPad Pro (maybe DaVinci Resolve) because there’s no need to transfer an extremely large video file like “ProRes” from other camera/iPhone to it. Just capture and edit with the iPad Pro. Would love to have feature that improve the workflow!
I just got the 11" iPad Pro M2 because my older iPad was 5 yrs old. I am with you, an iPad has very limited use to me and my iMac will continue to be where I do by far MOST of what I do.I do need an iPad but this much power IS, like you say, overkill!
When the first generation iPad Pro 12.9, I used it for 5 years when Battery broke. I Love my 5th iPad Pro 12.9 with M1 Chip, this iPad should last Me for 5 years. Great Product.
The worst part of iPad OS is that the desktop apps on mac store aren't replicated for iPad OS. For example, the Notion app on Mac OS is far more superior than the iPad version, even though both the devices are running on the same chip. This makes, buying the iPad more like a novelty than something that is of actual use. Unless, apple addresses these issues I think I am gonna stay away from iPad OS.
The question is again: Why do you need that much computing power in a tablet, when the software limits its use? The ipad pro 2018 is still more than capable to fullfill the purpose of the ipad pro combined with the limit that is called ipados.
M2 iPad Pro 11” user here. This is my first proper iPad since my 2012 iPad Mini, so I don’t have a lot of user experience to compare it to. That being said, this is an amazing tablet, gets great battery life, has excellent performance, and pairs seamlessly with the Magic Keyboard. Yes, the M2 chip is overpowered for what it does, but I like the longevity factor of the internals, since I plan on keeping this iPad for a few years. No regrets in my purchase, and I’m glad I forked out the extra money for the better performance and the extra hardware upgrades over the M1 Air, especially for long term use. I did try out the M1 Air, 9th gen iPad, and Mini 6, BTW.
I had the 12.9 4th gen Pro. Never thought I would upgrade from it. That was the best device I’ve ever had until I upgraded to this M2 12.9 inch. The Mini LED I didn’t get to experience on the M1 version is absolutely incredible. It’s like a portable LG C2. The screen is so beautiful, vibrant and sharp. The M2 chip speaks for itself. The Apple Pencil forced me to move most of my paperwork and manifests digitally. But what solidified my decision to upgrade was the 5G connectivity. As a commercial truck driver this is a game changer. My 4th gen LTE connection was incredible on the road but this added gravy to the potatoes. Unless a 6G bandwidth is introduced this iPad has EVERYTHING.
And my dad is still using the 9.7" iPad Pro in 2016. The A9X chip can still run a lot of things just fine. Now with the M2, you can chill for the next 5-6 years without thinking of upgrading.
I think you sort of hit the point. The M1 and M2 chips in a tablet are hampered by the iPadOS. The operating system is so frustrating to work with after working in MacOS. I sold my base iPad9 and bought the iPad Air 5 and I find that I it's a just not worth the upgrade.
I have the 2020 iPad Pro. I do not see a reason to upgrade for what I do. So I am not seeing a reason to really upgrade since my 2020 is such a sufficient tool. Combined with the Magic Keyboard I have had everything I need to complete my every day tasks. My Total Echo System is: Air Pod Pros. IPhone 13 Pro Apple Watch Series 7 12.9 (2020) iPad Pro.
I upgraded to this one from my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 that stopped working. I mainly use it for gaming and videos and I think it’s a great upgrade. Noticeable performance boost with absolutely no lag like with my old device. Loading screens seem to be faster. Wifi seems faster and more stable as I live in an apartment environment with lots of bandwidth all over the place, display seem more detailed, multitasking is seamless, has less issues, doesn’t crash (SoundCloud+gaming) battery life is noticeably longer. LiDAR is great, I can use it to capture face mocap for my unreal projects. Not to mention the usb C connection that will make it more simple to charge and the ability to connect an ssd directly into the iPad to transfer files and photos. I hear about editing software capabilities on this too, and it would be incredibly easy to just transfer recordings over and editing without being on your desk. The built in recording is much better than my old iPad pro as well, more crisp image with minimal artifacts / noise and uploads nicely directly to youtube at 60 fps. Quality is on par with my elgato capture card.
Eeeey you and me both. From same device to same device. I got it like less than a few hours ago so I am still running it through its paces but your impression seems to be what mine will.
5:25 Imagine the games that make us of the new 12GB RAM limit raise. Especially in sandbox titles such as Minecraft or PocketBuild. A couple of thousand dragons, in both games, would be funny AF
I’m getting an m2 iPad tomorrow, and I’m really excited. I’m coming from the 10.2 7th gen iPad, with the A10 Fusion. I love this iPad to death, but considering that the A10 chip was released in 2016 and is starting to show its age, I feel going from this…to the M2 will next to blow me away. I’m going to be able to do so much more with the M2 then I am with the 7th gen. What some tech reviewers might not fully grasp is that the user base for this iPad, that might be taking this jump from an older model won’t be looking for something absolutely insane. I’m looking for longevity, and if that means having similar hardware and features to a model that’s a few years old, so be it.
As much as I love the maxOS stability and reliability iPadOS is still the only platform to play mobile games with my friends. I’m a huge mobile gamer. And as much as my M1 MacBook Pro is amazing at battery 🔋 life and multitasking speed iPad Pro is still better at mobile gaming and streaming shows in Dolby Vision with AirPods Max for virtual Dolby atmos. Oh and for out of the box video calls in Full HD. Thing about iPhone is that it can do the same thing but try playing the bigger screen is better for pubg mobile.
As an artist I really love the Ipad. I've just upgraded to an 11inch m2 pro. But I agree that the letdowns are mostly software based. Ipad OS is some of the most locked down rubbish i've had to deal with. There is absolutely no reason why the iPad is being excluded from powerful desktop applications, aside from some bs Apple ecosystem spin. The device could do so much more, but it's held back.
Seems better to have over spec'd machine waiting for software to be built around rather than falling behind in a couple years and being forced to upgrade just to run the new apps coming down the pipeline. Honestly feels like they should be over spec just to future proof.
Not a great take, TBH. Most of us don’t have a shelf of fancy cameras to shoot video with, or even the latest iPhone (mine’s a 2nd gen SE), so the ProRez on the iPad Pro are useful to us. Adjectives like “stale” and “ boring” are really empty; who looks for excitement or a “new experience” in their computing devices? I want reliability and performance. In terms of improvements, i think it’s iPadOS where the improvements can be made, such as supporting multiple users and continuing to improve multitasking. Bringing more “pro” apps to iPadOS is really a question of how much work it is to port MacOS apps to iPadOS and vendor willingness to do to. For my money, the M2 iPad Pro has been an excellent and much-used tool (I’m using it now), and I anticipate it serving me well for many years, even if iPadOS gets a heavy dose of new features and “pro” apps. 👍
I couldn't agree more with you man. I don't want an exciting fashion piece, i want something reliable, flexible and powerful. (Give the "pro" a reason for actually being there, you know?) There's no excuse as to why IpadOS is locked out of desktop apps. It's hugely limiting.
I have one of the iPad Pro’s from 2022 (the Bigger Screen) and it’s been a huge upgrade from the 2017 10.5inch iPad Pro I had, as you can imagine. I do see your point though about how this model with the M2 Processor and I agree that it really could do a whole lot more if Apple did more with iPadOS & released more APIs to developers so they could make their apps leverage its capabilitiess to the fullest. Apple’s Marketing can be a little over-hyped & mis-leading so one would naturally ask why they put a desktop-class CPU in this while restricting it somewhat.
Have to admit disappointment with this video, and I usually like AppleInsider content. Whiny. Like you had little of value to say this time. The iPad Pro design works. A tweak here and there is fine. They don't have to radically change every time or every 3 or 4 times to be good devices.
I replaced my 2018 as it was continuously losing signal, Bluetooth and more. I purchased a new iPad last fall. Hope it future protects me. I don’t download much and really use it when traveling etc.
The hover feature is lame. Not practical. I use procreate and turned it off. Found it distracting. It’s the same with the double tap feature to switch modes. It would be better with some sort of haptic feedback or actual buttons.
I’m just an older tech junkie that doesn’t make the most, or even median, powers of my gadgets. Upgraded from my ‘old’ 10” Ipad. I bought one of these last week. Ok I know it’ll take me a while to get used to, but I love my old ‘home’ button. It was much more positive/ faster for navigation etc than this drag from the bottom option which requires too much messing about. I do like the switch to usb c. Pencil? Nice that it is magnetic but it can be knocked out too easily. It also annoys that its range is almost a centimeter from the screen. Overall, heavy compared to old one. Prefer thumb print to face recognition.
I've seen many companies using iPad with lidar scanner to scan the building to map out the interior and do inspection. It's better than an iPhone because the screen is bigger , easier to work with. Using iPad camera is perfectly fine.
I am thinking about getting the iPad Pro 11in and take advantage of the free engraving. Is it a good idea to engrave it? Ps. I don’t really care about the resell because I don’t sell my devices usually
I sold my 11” iPad Pro and 14” MacBook Pro with hopes of this device replacing both. I ultimately had to buy another Mac and kinda miss my 11” iPad Pro.
I do think some people are put their iPads into rigs with handles for filming as a quick dirty way to record and edit so they will love ProRes, the results are now not so dirty either :D I am a hobbiest artist and I had an iPad Pro which I gifted my daughter to try the Surface Pro 8 but using that is so much a barrier to doing art that I'm just not, so looking to see what drops next week (7th May 2024) and either dropping on a new one or grabbing an M2 based Pro.
I just ordered m2 and picking up today. I made the decision from m1 to m2 is my m1 is getting old and I’m getting $510 trade in credit. Also, before any issues comes up which will cost me more or worth nothing if this happens.
Set the double tap for eraser on the pencil to only trigger when the pencil is close to the screen. As I would constantly activate it by accident before this has been a godsend for me.
Ok.. here is a list of apps I plan to use.. Fender Play, its a guitar lessons created by Fender.. Gibson Guitar lessons app, Fender Tone, a app that allows you to change, edit and create effects and preset on my Fender GTX guitar amp.. Marshall Gateway, does the samething as the Fender tone but for Marshall Code 25 and 50 watt amps.. The Spark app, an app for the Positive Grid Spark modeling amp.. Katana Librarian and the Katana Air app, apps for the Boss Katana MKII guitar amps.. Mantis from the Laser Academy, an app used to dry fire indoor target practicing, this app utilizes the camera to stare and targets and keep score, and finally, Final Cut Pro... I have it on my mac mini but apparently I have to get another copy for the tablet.. so based on all of this, which would you go with, the 12.9 or the 11?
The only thing limiting that thing is the software. but because apple doesn't want their macbook lineup to die, They just won't do it. and i mean apple intelligence is coming but that still isn't a big reason
Just got mine 12.9, 256GB silver Wi-Fi + cellular and Apple Pencil for only $1,099. I understand the limits but eventually these limits will be tapped into like with Wi-Fi 6E and 5G as well as higher performance apps. Everything is pointing to these things in the future!
I can't really speak to the hover function, I don't have one...yet. However the camera being higher quality is HUGE imo. A ton of companies use these iPads for work. For example, my home inspector was using an iPad pro. They took over 60 photos on the iPad. They also ran their applications all on it so importing those photos into the app was a breeze. The wifi6E is future proofing for sure. Might be overkill now, but def not in a few years. The M2 will be just like the M1. Its gonna take time for developers to come out with stuff. It's very expensive and time consuming to port all these things over. All in all, it just seems like YOU personally don't benefit from the 2022 Ipad pro. However its a huge improvement for someone with an older one or without one at all imo of course.
It’s sad to see them introducing the hover feature like it’s groundbreaking when other Samsung tablets and galaxy notes have had that for years. Most of these “new” features are just copied from other brands years later and marketed as new. Like the pencil, it’s included for Samsung and charges magnetically on their cheapest tablets as standard
Uhhhh, wait a minute. It is my understanding you cannot even capture in Apple ProRes and Prores RAW out of the box ! You have to actually purchase and download a seperate application (Don't know its name, sorry) which is actually written to take advantage of this new Apple Codec Capability ! I think the only real enabling justification to go with the M2 iPAD Pro is Davinci Resolve editing capability. I would definitely prefer to edit on a small iPAD which can handle a nimble electronic pencil and edit in real time on such a portable device. 👍
The iPad is trying to do what the Mac does, and people want the Mac to do what the iPad does. When’s Apple going to merge the two together? Would they ever?
Highly doubt it. iPadOS does function exactly like MacOS on a smaller device, but I don’t think it will be merged (If you mean running MacOS on an iPad or iOS on a Mac).
Dude, you aren’t thinking from the standpoint of an *actual* consumer. Most people don’t have DSLRs (I shoot a lot of video and I don’t). I use my ipad and iphone for “two camera shoots” all the time so the various camera upgrades are very useful to people like me. Some people ARE going to have 6e availability. I don’t use the pencils or any of that nonsense but feature upgrades are going to pile up for visual arts professionals and make life a lot easier. You have to be able to zoom out and look at what the greater, general populace might do as opposed to just yourself. Let’s be honest, upgrading for every cycle is completely mental unless you’re wealthy…even then, change will be incremental and far less noticeable. I upgrade every 3-5 years based on feature sets, my own needs, etc.
M2 was a pretty meh bump for the processor. It was a good upgrade to the iPad but there wasn't a ton new here for iPads. Just being honest, a boring release here.
@@AppleInsiderI’m watching this on my iPad Pro 2018 because i was thinking about upgrading to a M2 iPad Pro. I’m currently using a Apple Magic Keyboard 2020 with my 2018 model. Do you know if this keyboard will fit / work on the iPad 2022 model?
The fact that you are unable to clearly communicate what iPadOS or app developers need to provide you with other than saying, “Apple needs to do SOMETHING” (paraphrasing) is evidence you have no idea how hard it is to build ideas into working solutions. Truth is you don’t know what you want, can’t understand what you are missing, and are unable to offer solutions to the perceived drawbacks which exist only on your mind and NOT in the OS, apps, or hardware brilliant people assembled for you to gripe about.
This review kinda sucks youre saying youve got alot of negative things but the things you say arent negative at al like; there is a new hovering feature wich is cool but i dont use it” like how is that negative just because you dont use it? Lol
Bro tell them how they overheat on stock lol they get so hot if you use gps and location services like how can something so expensive be so trash man wth how can the old iPad handle heat better then the m2 lol that shit can burn you , mines won’t even charge if I have location services on it will heat up and drain the battery on a usb c faster charger like Apple really don’t care about there consumers or the people you make this in China for 5 an hour

Right from being a decent tablet to becoming a smaller Mac. iPadOS is really a game changer.
It's not enough, I wish they'd opem the hardware to MacOs Ecosystem, at least for iPad Pros. Or just more Pro apps.

(Give the "pro" a reason for actually being there, you know?)
There's no excuse as to why IpadOS is locked out of desktop apps. It's hugely limiting.
Can’t see a problem with the design. Small bezels. What can they do to make it more exciting in that regard.
Watching this video on my 1st generation ipad air while unboxing my new ipad pro m2. After 10 years, m2 is a dramatic upgrade.
What i learned from this great video is how to rotate my iPad Pro (7:29). At first it seems impossible, but turns out it's very easy! 😁
I think if you're not an artist, the hoover function on the pencil is just icing. Nice to have, but not needed
I've seen many companies using iPad with lidar scanner to scan the building to map out the interior and do inspection. It's better than an iPhone because the screen is bigger , easier to work with. Using iPad camera is perfectly fine.
Ouch, i was looking for a review of what works. It's not stale if you are an illustrator or animator.
I came from a 2019 iPad Air and I love this new one.
This is the 1 st ipad of my life , I loved it . But the only thing I face is it heats a lot just while using a simple apple notes application
2:11 I thought my iPad screen was smudged and wiped it down 😂
I do think some people are put their iPads into rigs with handles for filming as a quick dirty way to record and edit so they will love ProRes, the results are now not so dirty either :D
I am a hobbiest artist and I had an iPad Pro which I gifted my daughter to try the Surface Pro 8 but using that is so much a barrier to doing art that I'm just not, so looking to see what drops next week (7th May 2024) and either dropping on a new one or grabbing an M2 based Pro.
May I know what did you end up getting?
I just ordered m2 and picking up today. I made the decision from m1 to m2 is my m1 is getting old and I’m getting $510 trade in credit. Also, before any issues comes up which will cost me more or worth nothing if this happens.
I had the first version of an ipad air from 2011 and I only just upgraded to a ipad pro because it would not update the software anymore
I am thinking getting an iPad Pro 11in and engrave my name on it, do you think it would look good?
Ps. I don’t really care about resell price
The only thing limiting that thing is the software. but because apple doesn't want their macbook lineup to die, They just won't do it. and i mean apple intelligence is coming but that still isn't a big reason
I’m coming from a 2016 ipad 6 gen so I think it’s really good
Just got mine 12.9, 256GB silver Wi-Fi + cellular and Apple Pencil for only $1,099. I understand the limits but eventually these limits will be tapped into like with Wi-Fi 6E and 5G as well as higher performance apps. Everything is pointing to these things in the future!
Cap
@@elongatedwingWhat am I lying about then?
Just waiting for m3 ipad so i could buy a cheaper m2 ipad coz that hovers really helpful for drawing
Not updating my iPad 2021 M1 model till a oled iPad Pro released
I sort of conclude from this video... That a used M1 Pro would be a good buy instead!
Need help here what is the best hub for ipad M2 thanks
Is it worth getting 8gb 512?
An illustrator much appreciates the Pencil 2 hover.
I have a Air 4 and i will upgrade to a iPad Pro model probably a 11 inch model it will be the 2022 model or newer
M2 chip but can’t switch users 😂
Uhhhh, wait a minute. It is my understanding you cannot even capture in Apple ProRes and Prores RAW out of the box ! You have to actually purchase and download a seperate application (Don't know its name, sorry) which is actually written to take advantage of this new Apple Codec Capability ! I think the only real enabling justification to go with the M2 iPAD Pro is Davinci Resolve editing capability. I would definitely prefer to edit on a small iPAD which can handle a nimble electronic pencil and edit in real time on such a portable device. 👍
I love it but hover could be doing more
I would like a 14 inch iPad and dual boot with macOS
Tech RUclipsrs are so out of touch with what most people actually want and use iPads for.
Final Cut Pro just released for iPad Pro......
Only thing that really changes is the increase in price
Apple managed to disappoint me by not merging the macos and ipados
Coming from an ipad pro 9.7! This thing is a space ship to me ! 😆
The iPad is trying to do what the Mac does, and people want the Mac to do what the iPad does. When’s Apple going to merge the two together? Would they ever?
The ipad can do the Mac does you can turn it into a mac
But the mac can't turn into ipad
Accept for montage and pro editing stuff...
Highly doubt it. iPadOS does function exactly like MacOS on a smaller device, but I don’t think it will be merged (If you mean running MacOS on an iPad or iOS on a Mac).
I highly doubt they would. It would be amazing for us because it'll give us flexibility but it's going to be a possible money loss for them lmao
iPad isn't trying so much as people are forcing it to be 😅
@@ahmedmuhannad375 sure, but without mac apps it's strictly a drawing and note taking app 😅
It is what it is.. It's an Ipad - no need to reinvent the wheel
MacOS on iPad Pro!! 🎉
I love the iPad Pro- seems like you’re stele
fully screw the tip in... thats all.... thats all i came down here to say.
hahaha you though i was done
GOT YOU AGAIN I WAS HAHAHAHA
More powerful 🤔
This is a future ready iPad, so wait for the future programs and games to come out that can fully harness the power of M2 😂
I thought you said you were going to go back to the positives? Why do you have an iPad that you despise? Sell it, bro, jc lmfao
Speak for yourself the m2 iPad Pro is NOT stale
M2 was a pretty meh bump for the processor. It was a good upgrade to the iPad but there wasn't a ton new here for iPads. Just being honest, a boring release here.
@@AppleInsiderI’m watching this on my iPad Pro 2018 because i was thinking about upgrading to a M2 iPad Pro. I’m currently using a Apple Magic Keyboard 2020 with my 2018 model. Do you know if this keyboard will fit / work on the iPad 2022 model?
@@richardkoolen8396 probably not as the new iPad pros are thinner
The fact that you are unable to clearly communicate what iPadOS or app developers need to provide you with other than saying, “Apple needs to do SOMETHING” (paraphrasing) is evidence you have no idea how hard it is to build ideas into working solutions. Truth is you don’t know what you want, can’t understand what you are missing, and are unable to offer solutions to the perceived drawbacks which exist only on your mind and NOT in the OS, apps, or hardware brilliant people assembled for you to gripe about.
Barely 4 years is not many many years kid 😂
This review kinda sucks youre saying youve got alot of negative things but the things you say arent negative at al like; there is a new hovering feature wich is cool but i dont use it” like how is that negative just because you dont use it? Lol
1800-WANG! 😂😢🤨🙃
all your problems are first world problems 😂
Bro tell them how they overheat on stock lol they get so hot if you use gps and location services like how can something so expensive be so trash man wth how can the old iPad handle heat better then the m2 lol that shit can burn you , mines won’t even charge if I have location services on it will heat up and drain the battery on a usb c faster charger like Apple really don’t care about there consumers or the people you make this in China for 5 an hour
yo thx 👍
Pathetic device cant even do external screen support properly.
yo thx 👍
IPad Pro is garbage, mind lasted two weeks. Don’t buy this garbage
How
I would love to see an iPad Pro with macOS
