After "Seasons in the Sun," I was so glad that when I reviewed the "one hit wonders" that I recommended on the community message board for the marathon, I had not suggested this song. 😂 Plus, it clearly states that this song is a REVIEW, so Nick and Ryan have no one else to blame for choosing this song as they are already familiar with it. Any "pain" that they feel on this one, it will be self-inflicted. 😀

Okay, time to get serious again for the marathon. Regardless of what anyone may think of the song, it was a #1 hit in 2 countries (Australia & New Zealand), while peaking at #2 in the UK, Ireland, and Scotland. Besides the #1 and #2 placements in 5 different countries, it would reach inside the top #10 in 6 more countries and the European Hot 100 chart (Interestingly enough, the song would get slightly inside the top #20 on the American Mainstream Top 40, but it did also reach inside the top #25 in 2 other American charts). The success of the song culminated with the group winning the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording and 2 Billboard Music Awards (World Music Artist of the Year and World Music Album of the Year). Given the song's place in popular culture of the early 2000s, it should not be that much of a surprise that it has been documented as sampled more than 25 times (as recently as just last year) and has been covered more than 10 times (In fact, the Baha Men's hit was a cover version and not the original). The song also spawned a hard rock collaboration between the group Our Last Night and the Baha Men a little over 5 years ago. The first link above is to that version of the song. Perhaps its biggest pop culture achievement, besides being in several film soundtracks, was the short collaboration between the Baja Men and the characters from the TV show "The Simpsons" on a spoof called "Who Wants a Haircut?" The second link above is to that version. Ultimately, while some critics may find the song to have faults (such as being too repetitive in repeating the title throughout the song), there can be no argument that the song was tremendously successful and it is still highly recognized in pop culture after being released over 20 years ago, a rare achievement for any "one hit wonder."

Thanks for the reply, David. I'll admit that I went into this video with a bit of trepidation as someone that remembers this song being everywhere when it became a hit. However, the review was far more entertaining then it probably had the right to and I thought it would be. One of the things that all of us viewers that are old enough to be Nick's, Ryan's, and Ty's, um, older uncles or aunts 😂 have to keep in mind is that this is nostalgia for their generation. To a certain extent, Nick brought this up towards the end when he was talking about how he and Ty had that CD when they were kids. Depending on a person's age, their formative years likely had at least 1 hit song that younger people, teenagers and like minded adults loved, while an equally large percentage of the population couldn't stand to hear (1960s-"Louie Louie," 1970s-"I Love The Nightlife," 1980s-"The Humpty Dance," 1990s-"Macarena," 2000s-"Baby Shark"). Nick mentioned the concept of "silly fun songs" being necessary and there is a lot of truth within that statement. Every song out there can't be about a young guy dying from leukemia and saying goodbye to his family/friends/loved ones like "Seasons in the Sun." The real issue is when a song like "Who Let The Dogs Out" gets oversaturated/overexposed in our daily lives as a "cultural phenomenon," that's when many in society really begin to push back. Ryan made a great point about how music, especially dance music, can bring together people from different parts of the world. There are millions of ABBA fans around the world, but it might have been far more difficult for that group to connect with English speaking audiences if they couldn't write and perform uptempo songs, particularly as they were first being introduced to a world-wide audience. Perhaps the only statement the guys made in the video that I may take issue with is Nick saying that "Who Let The Dogs Out" is "a song that has to be on the channel." Yeah, I'm still not sold on that one. 😂 Seriously, I'm not a person that follows current music all that closely and I know there are other viewers that do, especially dance tracks, but there have been some listenable to very good mainstream songs that lend themselves to be danced to released in the last 15 or so years. This is just a very small list of songs that I can recall (they are listed below in chronological order, most recent to oldest):
*Above Link #1: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, "Love Don't" (2021)
*Above Link #2: Cold War Kids, "What You Say" (2021)
*Above Link #3: Lake Street Dive, "Hypotheticals" (2021)
*Above Link #4: Leon Bridges, "If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)" (2018)
*Above Link #5: John Legend (featuring Andre 3000), "Greenlight" (2008)
*Honorable Mention & Above Link #6: Anthony David, "Something About You" (2006; Note-This is a cover of the Level 42 hit from the 1980s)
Others, particularly those that more closely follow the genre, are welcome to respond with further recommendations. In the end, I try to watch the channel's videos for songs that I'm familiar with to hear the guys' thoughts and I'm trying to branch out into more videos of songs that I'm not familiar with or know. I was kind of dreading this one a bit, but the guys' energy and the fun that they clearly had made it a worthwhile viewing for me. If someone hosting a channel can do that for a viewer that doesn't particularly love the content in that video, that is a great trait to have and build upon.

Thanks for the reply, David. Absolutely. Based on my posts, people can see that I'm very interested in music history. However, there are times when it's more than okay to be a little silly and just have fun with music. That's what I saw from the guys in this video. If a person pays close attention to the clips in the intro, they are almost all times where they guys are cutting up and having fun. As a big fan of the now "classic" TV show "Mystery Science Theater 3000," I loved the quotes from the show's creators when they were asked about their obscure riffs, jokes, and references. Their comment was "The right people will get it (what they're trying to accomplish on the show)." Given the not always direct line, mainstream path that the guys like to take, "The right people will get it" seems to fit this channel's approach quite well.

I know I'm gonna get drilled for this but its ok. As we have said before music is subjective and i feel that the song from TYCOON was so much better than this. It just doesn't appeal to my music sense but it is a one hit wonder so all is good. Good music to me strikes a cord in my core whether it be the musical arrangement or the lyrics themselves. This one just doesn't reach me.
