Monochrome render is astoundingly good... the amount of work they put into it is legendary (speaking from experience - many, many hours of graft to get that right) And it's interesting, right? the AK could now be the model to save the Milgauss 🥃

Keep doing the musical intros boet. They are a great way to start the videos 🙂

Your comment about the Oyster Quartz bracelet sparked an interesting thought. You're right the Milgauss is more or less a redundant watch, technological. Especially with the invention of Quartz.
But what if Rolex took a leaf out of Grand Seiko (Spring Drive) or FP Journey's book and developed a brand new hybrid automatic/quartz movement??
Now that would be something that sets the Milgauss apart from it's competitors - and the rest of the range - beyond aesthetics. One can dream.

  • @DeadReckoner

I think the Monochrome variation is extremely attractive but your take on it seems more likely as something they would release. The Monochrome variation makes me think of the Omega Ploprof dial. From a Watchmakers standpoint I am glad to see the Milguasss go. I never liked the design of how the dial was attached and secured to the movement. Definitely not typically the same as their other models. However I do think some of the color combinations you were coming up with were great. ⌚️

Love the guitar intros. Keep them up! Great video
I think a 2026 return for the 70th anniversary is more likely, even if just a limited run.
Titanium feels a good fit for the Milgauss. I like the dial renders, but particularly the idea of it in a yachtmaster case. For this to return, I think this is the one watch where Rolex would try and flex their engineering muscle, and do something different with the movement. It would have to set the new standard in anti magnetism. Akin to the depth wars between Rolex vs Omega in the dive watch category.
btw I own the Z Blue Milgauss. One of my favs. Coincidentally am wearing it when I watched this video !

Really cool creativity vibe on your end to make this material. Personally, I am looking forward to Milgauss return. If not now then maybe in 2026 on it's 70th anniversary. Its design and style is unparallel. And usability? As you said, AirKing is still around despite lower interest and even more similarity to OP than any other model line. It is more as a symbol of its previous greatness (introduced in 1958 just two years after Milgauss)

I love the quirkiness and diversity of design language in the Milgauss back-catalog, and your example renders are brilliant. Nerds are cool and deserve their own tool watch. I’d like to see a titanium cased version with an orange lightning bolt seconds hand and crown guards, along with a master chronometer certification. If they’d like, they can even call it a superlative master chronometer if they can fit it on the dial. I’d sign up.

I would agree, an Air-King case, with Milgauss dial is most likely. Added colours would be great, but they’ve got to bring back the blue. I know it’s crazy to say, but with the new factory coming online, all the investment that’s gone into that, increases in supplies, increases in their list prices, and I believe a falling demand, it would make sense for them to keep a new Milgauss release as lower cost as possible and maximum RRP. Will this mean a plain sapphire crystal as opposed to the green sapphire?, I reckon it’s possible, which would change the character of the watch from the previous version.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  9 месяцев назад +2

You’re right, I think cost cutting might factor in (and a huge loss if the green crystal goes) but man… so much potential to make this line fresh and exciting 🔥

I agree the Milgauss certainly has potential if the design upgrades and reintroduction are handled properly. I don’t see it as ever becoming a flagship of their brand, but it probably has a niche following that would make it worthwhile. I’m thinking that if they could redesign the lightning bolt hand a little and perhaps change the dial markers, they might just create enough interest. Well done as always 🥃

Can we make requests? I'd love to hear 'Going to California" or maybe "That's the Way" ...two of my favorite LZ songs. Love hearing you play at the beginning of the episodes lately.
So maybe they should wait until they can make something of a statement anti-magnetic piece with this line. As much as I like the AK case, it just feels too easy to throw the Milgauss in it, but yes, they probably will. How about using a movement with the Syloxi hairspring in it? it seems to be begging for this tech?

    • @ID-Guy

Love those two pieces too… the acoustic riffs on both of them, legendary 🔥 “That’s the way” is beautifully simple too. And you’re right about it sounding too obvious going with the AK case (and they probably know that too - so they’ll avoid it) 🤣

As you said the logical move would be something like the Monochrome render, but the modern Milgauss is very much like the Yachtmaster in Rolex's family of sports watches; a watch that doesn't have enough fundamental differentiation from its parent watch (OP and Submariner respectively) so they use it as a playground for experimentation with colours and materials. I can see the 2024/25 return of the Milgauss being in titanium as they refine and scale up the production processes until they move to the "proper" titanium Rolex's; the Sea Dweller and the 42mm Explorer II.
BTW loving the guitar intros 🤘

Your electric blue/mint green number at 6:56 is knockout, far more complimentary colours than the Z-Blue, which I always thought was a bit ‘clashy’ with the orange seconds.

Great renders and I do hope the Milgauss does come back. I see the reuse of the Air King case as so easy Rolex would not go that route. What if Rolex used the Explorer I case sizes of 36mm and 40mm instead? Offering 2 sizes with those similar color ways from your renders would be awesome! Milgauss - the 1st Rolex I contemplated buying in 07/08, but didn’t figuring it and all the others would be obtainable forever (after a short wait), never suspecting a ‘buying history’ would be required.
While it could come back I wouldn’t suspect it for at least 5+ yrs. And while you’re 💯 that a modern take (and your mockups were very sharp) would appeal to younger buyers… Rolex isn’t even attempting to sell to younger people as they watch flipping continue unabated with a ‘oh, well’ attitude - instead of easily killing it off. They could sell 5x the # of steel sport/tool watches they pump out currently.

First, I love your guitar intros! Second, I would think that Rolex would come out with a new Milgauss this year because it’s the 70th anniversary! They love anniversary addition! Third, I think they should have additional colorways like you suggested, it would help out the model for sure. Lastly, your point about it serving its purpose and most modern watches are antimagnetic these days anyway… then I think Rolex should make the Milgauss purpose-built again, to be the model that showcases and leads the way in innovation and new technology for the brand.

Great ideas here. I must say the Oyster Quartz revival idea you proposed with an automatic movement could be a home run! Imagine that with some of these dial variants you have proposed and a Zblue option. Wow! They could really make a splash. Unfortunately, that probably means Rolex won’t do that as they aren’t ones to make splashes these days.

It's hard to know what the heck they'll be focusing on first. I think the no-brainer is they'll do 1:1 Reissues of a few OG models (like the Tri-compax and Genta PR - because it's a safe bet) B09 caliber in the chrono's would be an awesome addition too. But as for modernising? I really don't know... first plan of action is planting that seed in the larger audiences brains that these are killer designs😉🥃

Cool renders, very nice. It would be hilarious if Rolex brought the Milgauss back, as an integrated-bracelet model at 100,000 gauss, call it the Cent-Milgauss, and price it below IWC’s hugely-over-rated and over-priced Ingenieur. It won’t happen of course…but would be wonderful if it did.

The Milgauss is supposed to be a technical watch, but it no longer had any tech in it. If they bring it back then it would have to be with a movement or function that was truly innovative. Rolex did it with the Sky Dweller and the YM 2, which have great movements and functionality, despite being fugly.

Love the Milgauss renditions! I think Rolex has huge potential to develop some of its less popular and quirkier models to add variety and depth to the catalogue (without going Omega crazy). My impression is that their CEO JF Dufour wants to spice things up and get creative. We’ve seen it in the OP line, Date Justs w/ textured dials, with the GMTs, Daytona Le Mans and I think we could see some surprises. It seems Dufour is slowly getting more and more leverage in a company that had a gazillion safeguards, a culture of secrecy any intelligence agency would envy and that moves very conservatively. So there is a possibility that the Milgauss comes back with an updated concept as you’ve proposed and hopefully a bezel. I’d like to see a brand new professional model altogether with a real world application.

There's no logic reason why it needs to return as all current Rolex are more anti magnetic than the milgaus. That doesn't mean it won't come back. The hands and the fat case (which was only on two models) is what made the milgaus, a mighaus so if they do another one without it , it won't be a true milgaus .
