The Coolest Entry Rolex Watch: The Underrated Milgauss - 116400 Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 дек 2024
- Rolex spawned so many legendary watches during the 1950s - their most glorious decade. There was the Submariner, the Explorer, and the Day-Date just to name a few. But often forgotten is the Milguass, which was originally intended for scientists of that time period. Unfortunately, it was not successful and was eventually phased out until its rebirth in the 21st century. It is still overlooked by most Rolex buyers but is simultaneously one of the brand’s coolest watches and highly desired by collectors.
Why is this watch so compelling? What went wrong after its initial launch and why was it reissued? Today we look at the history and story behind a watch that was way ahead of its time, and how it has become the most underrated entry level Rolex that you should consider buying, as much as the more well known icons from the brand. Join me today for a long overdue review of a watch any true horology enthusiast should know about!

Your intros are Oscar worthy 🏆
Bring back the hip hop intros. Hugo would approve.
That intro is the ultimate, I can't remember seeing anything near to it on RUclips before, TGV you keep raising the bar, I'm so excited about your future productions. Nice review of the slightly Unknown Rolex Milgauss albeit popular amongst enthusiast.
The Milgauss has been my favourite Rolex for a while. It's the cleanliness of design with a couple of little quirks to sparkle. Refined, yet slightly eccentric. Love it.
The milgauss will and always will be my favorite watch in my collection. Thank you for making me feel sane for owning one.
As a mechanical engineer, this is my dream watch. I know its legacy and its worth.
I love the practical quirkiness of the Milgauss. Thank you for presenting it with the respect it deserves.
The "C" in CERN is pronounced like an "S" - as in SOLID video, TGV!
Correct, think centigrade, centimeter, certain, CERN.

Or conCern.. about his education.
@Jesus Christ you dont matter
This is my grail watch ,with the black dial and green sapphire . It's simple but I love it
I have had my eye out for this watch for a while and was fortunate enough to find one at my AD in August 2020. I gave a wish list of watches to my AD, and this one was on it. He told me that he had one that I could have. It had been put on layaway about 3 years earlier by someone who never picked it up. It was new in the box with stickers. I love it.
I got the call today from my AD, he has a black dial Milgauss 116400GV. Its mine if I want it, and yes I want it! Thanks for the informative review.
How are you liking it?
I like it a lot! Except for the fact that I recently got a two-tone Yachtmaster I would be wearing it everyday. It is heavier than a Datejust or Yachtmaster so check the weight before you buy one
@@DESCENDINGDR Nice! Haha, you could always Schwarzkopf it. No problem there, I prefer a heavy watch.
I've always been a fan of the Milgauss, so this was a real treat! If I had the financial means to own one, the blue dial would be my choice.
The most underrated Rolex has got to be the Oysterquartz datejust. I think they have a lot to offer, yet nobody wants them..
Looking forward to the next one.
Regards,
Koen
So pleased to hear that Koen.
YESSSSS the Oysterquartz, my first Rolex no less!!!!
Got it for a steal, but these days they are getting rare to find a good one and the prices are slowly growing.
Great nomination!
Thank you my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
The millgaus and the air king are the most underrated rolexs
Absolutely amazing intro. I can only imagine how many hours that went into it. Bravo
One of my absolute favourites. If feel like I've been waiting forever for this review. Thank you!
Thanks for branching out and reviewing models that a lot of the other watch review channels seem to ignore. Bravo!
Great attention to details you have for noticing that the markers at 3,6 and 9 are slightly bigger
I’m 14 years old and have recently got into watches and I have saved my money over a summer job and winter break and I’m really torn between the stowa Flieger verus and the Klassik or even if there are any other better Fliegers for the price out there.
Best regards,
Lance
Hello Lance, great to hear from young Gentry!
Mmmmm, I love the choices, I adore both but I would go for the Flieger, it's their most iconic watch and more versatile IMO.
But it's win win, so go with your heart, you will love both!
Thank you, keep me posted, I would love to hear how it turns out.
Best regards,
TGV
Ok I will!
The stowa flieger with the grey sunburt dial is also a great and even more versatile option!
Hi Lance,
take a look at Fortis watches. They have a lot of Flieger watches. The brand offers very good quality at moderate prices and also has a history.
Hanhart and Laco also have good Flieger watches.
greetings
René
I like laco much better over stowa. It has the more accurate case shape of original fliegers which happen to be my favorite style of watch along with dive watches
TGV, your editing on the intros just keeps getting better! Is that even possible?! I was kind of entranced and speechless after this one.
I've always liked the modern Milgauss models. To me they show a side of Rolex that we never see: the fun, more eccentric side. It's definitely unlike Rolex to have a bright lightning bolt for a seconds hand on one of their watches! As for most underappreciated Rolex, how about the Cellini models?
I’ve always liked the Milgauss - although I’ve never understood why Rolex has not reissued the 1956 model, which is a real stunner!
I think they didnt want to remember that it was rotating bezel watch, almost a twin to the sub. Don't want steal the thunder of it or the GMT
The production value is insane on these intros. They might be simple but they are just amazing
another absolutely wonderful video with an out of this world intro
this Milgauss is my most favorite Rolex, that second hand is bold, unique and it's something different from other Rolex, I just in love with the tooltastic of this Milgauss
my first Rolex was the Z blue Milgauss in December of 2020....I absolutely love it
What the hell! Been watching your channel for months now waiting for you to make a milgauss video since it has been my favorite entry level rolex. So I bought it 2 days ago from an AD. And now you make a video! The joy!
Everything about this presentation says 'class' The intro, your jacket, the history you researched about this piece. I can see already its going to be a great year to be on board with you. Don't forget us po' folks ! Regards from Canada.
I think Canada won't be forgotten in the interim and I don't think it will be due to Rolex.
I own the black dial green glass Milly and it’s definitely one of my favorite pieces. I only wear it on special occasions because it’s a tad big. I think I’m going to pick up the white dial next.
Coolest intro I’ve seen in a long time. On any channel. Outstanding.
I've always considered the milgauss to be a similar watch to the air king - slightly quirky and something a little different to the usual sub or explorer. Vintage versions of both are a very appealing buy - I think I'd take the air king on balance.
Great video as usual!
I have had a non-gv black dial Milly for a few years now, it's become my go to watch, which has turned me into a one watch collection man.
One day it will go to my grandson, until then it'll be on my wrist everyday.
Keep up the good work TGV👍
I am still convinced that this intro is deserving of some sort of reward.
👍’s up for your review. In the last 4 years I’ve focused on the ‘hard to get’ current Rolex steel Professional models. I’ve always liked the Milgauss white dial and viewed many RUclips reviews/monitored the pre-owned market looking for the right example to add to my collection. I’ve just purchased a 2008 unworn, stickered, box/papers+original receipt that was kept in a safe by the original purchaser - an absolute beauty for🇬🇧£8,200🤩
My father owns one of the blue faced Milgauss with the green-tinted crystal. I think it is one of his best looking watches.....and he has many many gorgeous pieces. It is a great look, wears very comfortably, and is just a great all-arounder. Pity our wrists are different sizes, because I don't get to play with it. And having a watch that can't be magnetized certainly is a great thing....having just suffered the delivery of a watch running so fast at start up that within 30 minutes of winding it up it was 5 minutes fast and got worse. Great review sir. Thank you once again.
Every time I take out my GV Milgauss, I play the intro to this video. Puts me in the proper headspace.. Gives a sense of purpose as if you are going to change the world. Wearing the milgauss in the laboratory feels as appropriate as the omega speedmaster in the Apollo command module. An absolute stunner!
Spot on!!!
One of Rolex's more risky designs (along w/ the modern AirKing): I really dig it with this white dial. Its likely competitor: The Omega Seamaster AquaTerra, crushes it w/ 15,000 gauss rating, however.
The modern Milgaus has far more than Milgaus level protection, due to the material the mainspring is now made from, which Tim Mosso mentioned, and said it would make it as anti magnetic as a Rail master or any other Omega watch. Essentially making the Milgaus A magnetic the same as Omega.

@@Seven77-JTTW I recently had MRI scans on my face, neck and chest. I was going to wear. My Milgaus Z-Blue, then I thought, 'this really doesn't matter, as I have tonsil and lymph node cancer' . Aha. Plus I thought my watch might get ripped off my arm.
Jack all the best with the treatment!

I have the Black GV and it's stunning. The bracelets on these watches elevate the watches just slightly to add a bit of flare under the cuff that it will do well in a nice evening out. I love this watch, such a true gem because it's not immediately identifiable like their ceramic bezel cousins which can be too blingy for me at time.
The milgaus is one of my grail watches. My favorite is the one with black dial and green ring. It's like it's from another world.
After living through the 1990s in Dallas, TX, where it seemed every billboard had a Rolex ad, I grew to detest the thought of owning a Rolex. But that has all changed since I saw the Milgauss. and now it's one of my grail watches. Love, love, love it, either the black dial (the sensible 66y/o me) or the Electric Blue dial (the inner 30y/o me). Simply beautiful!
Not sure if it's underrated . It is super rare and price is growing all the time .
Its not rare. There are hundreds available on chrono 24 alone as we speak and at very affordable prices.
Just when you think the intros can't get any more epic, TGV steps it up a whole other level!! Kudos good sir!!
My retire from the military gift to myself... 10 more years! Milgauss has been a dream forever.
Wow what an intro! That was absolutely next level! Really, that was Hollywood good my man. Major kudos to you on that!
Love this watch...and a great video. The most underrated, easy, the humble Oyster Perpetual, the Rolex that started it all
Amazing level-up on the Intro! Was that Sir Ian McKellen? I've never paid much attention to the Milgauss before, and didn't realize the cold war tie-in of the original Milgauss suggested by the intro.
Really? Maybe because I live near a nuclear ☢️ power plant , many rich engineers own a Milgauss. It’s always been very present in mind.
TGVs intros are better than some brand's advertisements. 🙏💪
Happy to say I bought my orange Mille for $5,000 but never selling
Another cracking intro! Thanks for introducing another watch I hadn't previously known about.
Loved the intro!! That is a good looking watch! I know lightening bolt second hand is one of the Milgauss's defining features, however, I'd prefer a regular second hand similar to what was on the much older references. Great video! Cheers.
Your intro is second to none on RUclips. 👍
Great video as always. 👍
A great video on my favourite watch TGV! Another interesting feature of the original Milgauss refs is the dial - It's 2.5 times thicker than other rolex models from the period and the surface "honeycomb" pattern was a deliberate feature to maximise magnetic field dissipation. Rolex really thought of everything back in the day!
TGV your intros just get more and more epic over time. So unique among youtube.
Complex Objects
Could be films in themself.
TGV, stellar intro. You've outdone yourself. Thank you for the time and effort you've put into this video and the channel.
Another great video TGV, I finally pulled the trigger on a 36mm datejust last November. 5 years of saving££. Love the channel.
I love this watch. It does so many things right. It’s hotter than blue blazes!
That being said I would have to get the blue dial version !
Great vid TGV 💪🏼
i haven't even finished the intro, and i have to stop
i have no right to expect cinema this good from a wristwatch channel
(ps / i now continue)
Sir, your intros just keep getting better and better. This one gave me chills. You deserve an oscar, I'm not even kidding.
Laid up with COVID watching ur vids! This one is pure class. The most lovely watch I could never wear due to its heft. I heard that the green sapphire is so hard to make that Rolex neither patented it nor etched in the Rolex crown. Thanks TGV; brilliant!
Wonderful content as usual.....
Your voice-over and video work while describing watches is second to none!
Thanks as I look forward to more....
The thinking man’s Rolex.
So great to see the Milguass get some love! Blue dial Milguass is my number one grail !
I am now waiting for your videos more because of these intros that you make ,rather than the watches itselfs
The 116400GV Z Blue Milgauss is my grail watch. I picked it up in 2014 when the blue dial came out. It's Currently my favorite watch! wear it all the time. Good Video!
Your best intro yet! Well done TGV
You have the best intros I have seen here on youtube. Really creative. BTW, I hate the tint on the Milgauss, there are models before it but not sure how old they are. I wish they would make 38mm models again. Having a 6.75-inch wrist is a bummer for me.
Linking in my cousin, GJS. The Milgauss is his favourite in the Rolex SS lineup! I’m sure he’ll appreciate the in-depth review. Many thanks TGV! CWT 🇬🇧
Wonderful intro once again. Dammit TGV, you keep turning me on to watches I never knew I liked. The only negative for me is the bolt second hand which doesn't seem to the match the refined elegance of the rest of the piece.
Congratulations on mounting your Katana correctly, ie; blade up and handle to the right. Not many people know the reason behind this. The Milguass is actually a grail of mine so I loved this video, it was beautifully shot.
God, why have you forsaken me?! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!
How I was hoping it would be the Z-Blue!! 😭
Jesus that intro. You’ve outdone yourself, TGV. Thank you.
I love the playfulness of this model. The hands are eccentric and somewhat humorous as well. May be, wearing a luxury watch that can 'laugh at itself' and doesn't take itself seriously might be the biggest 'flex'. True baller!
Wow, awesome intro. I'm going to watch it again after posting this. As for the Milgauss, absolutely love it. My favorite Roex.
I love this white dial 🤩for me the most underrated Rolex is air King 👍
Great review as always! Agree that a smaller size would suit the Milgauss better and the reason I’m more drawn to the 36mm Oyster Perpetual. I’ve always enjoyed the underrated /understated feel of my 34mm Air King 5500.
Marvellous intro. Goosebumps.
Fantastic video TGV. I’d much rather have a White OP over the milgauss. It can fly under the radar, it’s much more elegant and that dial is stunning.
I wanted an explorer as I was inspired by yours! But Rolex has so many good watches that I just can't decide on my first anymore!
Kayenng Thao , just sold my explorer 36 as just fell completely out of love with since getting my sub none date, don’t rush in pal try as many on as possible and go with your hart, I did rush in on the explorer but got out after one year with my full money back.
Op39
Your intros are still the best!
I was not a fan of the watch but I had never actually held it. Once I did I really liked it. Another great episode.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for a Milgauss review forever. Been tempted by the blue dial for some time now, but i needed to see your thoughts on it. Thanks brother.
I saw the z-blue in person this past summer and pictures just do not do it justice, absolutely stunning. Looking back I should have picked it up.
When I first saw the Milgauss, I didn't get it at all. I thought the orange lightning bolt looked way out of place for a Rolex. Then I learn about why it was made, and who was intended to wear it, and I was blown away. I like science quite a bit so I really connected with it. I think that the Milgauss would be my favorite Rolex, even if I owned way pricier models.
Thank you TGV! Love your videos. They are my horology highlight of the week.
I think this is the best intro I've ever seen.
I just found you channel a few weeks ago. I really am learning a ton and appreciate your reviews.
Good review TGV... Always thorough and enjoyable. 🥃
A little off topic, but a late thank you for turning me on to Sinn. Picked up a Sinn 903 for Christmas, then, for no other reason than I wanted it, my Sinn 104 I St Sa with blue dial came in last week. I am in love with both of them.
Finally a Rolex I like beside the Explorer! This white dial Milgauss looks georgeous! The Lightningbolt seconds hand is amazing! For me case size is too small (everything below 42mm looks too small for me)
My favourite Rolex, love this model, so much nicer than the ZBlue
Your best intro yet, that was beautiful.
Excellent introduction! Super sharp blazer too! Top notch!
Again...the master of all intros!
Wow powerful intro TGV👍😊 The Rolex milgauss is quite the watch. The white dial look good but the green looks fantastico 👍🇮🇹😊
Just got my first NDC, and I love it.
Thanks for the recommendation!
You are so welcome Taylor, welcome to the NDC club my friend.
The real deal!!!!
Enjoy it! Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The best opening sequence yet. Brilliant.
As for the Milgauss, you're spot on, TGV, and so glad you didn't neglect to mention the black frames on those hour markers that gives the dial a subtle weight and makes the white dial feel almost enamel-like. I have a late-model Air-King (34mm) with a white dial and the same black-framed creamy-lumed baton hour markers (and black Arabic 3-6-9). Something about those 'candy-bars' that makes me swoon.
Thank you David :D
Best regards,
TGV
One of my Rolie' faves !
Thanks again for the
great clip and killer intro !!
What great content!! I just bought Milgauss with the white face. Pay $10,000 for but don’t tell anyone I spent this much money during the pandemic 😢. I own two subs. I have alway love the look of this watch. The green face is selling for $13,000. Crazy right? I could purchased this watch for $7,000
4 years ago. I guess better late than never.
The lightning bolt second hand KILLS this watch as a choice, for me. A straight shaft option with that terrific end tip arrow would be PERFECT, for me. Polished, highly reflective dark gray minute and hour hands would be cream on the cake.
That intro is amazing! Love the Milgauss!
I keep watching this video for Sonnet 12.
Crazy good intro as always!
Wow! What an intro! Love it!
TGV. Please consider including weight of the watch as it is this element that decides if one can get wrist fatigue or not. For example, 40mm watches have different weight based on case back thickness, material, movement etc. Cheers.
