    The true litmus test to identifying, taking control of, and empowering the actualized self lies in the art of practicing surrender. Letting go of things we are powerless over and finding the courage to change the things that we can - is the key to living and not existing in life.

    My ego development was influenced by childhood exposure to psychological abuse. Because my developing mind was incapable of understanding and processing the emotions associated with these traumatic experiences, i suspect that my ego took control as a self-preservation mechanism of the mind. However, by adulthood my ego had become such a dominant part of my mind that it was an entity of its own. It felt like a constant internal battle between my ego and the real me. To maintain its dominance the ego made me narrow-minded, judgmental and self-critical, which kept me living in the thinking mind, instead of being present and living in the moment. I embraced the victim mentality and started blaming the external world for my internal problems. My case may not be the norm, so I don't know if there's such a thing as a healthy ego. But i suspect that a dominant ego is unhealthy and manifests in lower forms of consciousness. Starting to strip away my ego has stimulated a higher level of consciousness that has opened my eyes to the concept of spiritual enlightenment.

      +Actualized.org --- Ego is of the conscious brain though, it depends whether you believe there is life after death, then the soul is who one is all along, the ego is something one has to deal with while incarnated in flesh.

      he means that the ego is the "you" or your vessel. it isnt who you are. you are just your consciousness. the vessel is just a body with organs and other living things inside it, just as the universe acts to contain us within it.

    The super ego and ID are constantly flipping each other off. The superego uses shame and guilt against the ID. The ID uses arrogance and irreverence towards the superego. When this is going on a person is in internal battle with oneself. The ego can do better by learning how to appease both the superego and the ID's needs at the same time. For example, finding freeing and pleasure activities to appease the ID yet in a healthier way to respect the super ego.

    This higher state of mind you talk about at the end, I think I reach it everytime I'm reading a book or playing guitar. I think people need more activities to do in their lifes, because that really develops you as a whole.

    This completely misses the mark on Freud's theory. None of this battle between the Superego and Id are conscious. It's not like a typical example: when you go to grab a beer, the id wants it, but the superego doesn't, and the ego says "ok one is a good compromise". That's just the egoic rational choice, that's all the ego. Anything you know yourself to be is ego. The Superego and Id are completely unconscious. It generally reflects itself as moodiness and bad attitudes. The Superego is NOT that voice that says "bad me", that's still the ego. And the Superego usually isn't an all wise, good force, actually quite the opposite. The Superego uses excessive shame, fear and anxiety, or other psychosomatic effects like impotence to "punish" us for the Id's wishes. The Superego is a punishing force, NOT a constructive force. It's not like "go this way, go that way", "three hamburgers is too much, you'd better watch your cholesterol" type stuff.
    So for instance, a truer example of the interplay between Ego, Id and Superego is you spend a weekend at your parent's home, and you feel a general unease and tension maybe you try to cover this by overeating or drinking, or you're irritable. Your Id may have a deep desire to kill your parents or have sex with a sibling, that you are not aware of. If someone asked you, you'd say "of course I would never kill my father (or my friend who is acting like a father)". However, your Superego does hear this and punishes this by deep, unconscious shame and that leads to a conflict. That conflict isn't known by the person, but it's felt as an anxiety that leads the person to eat. Or maybe it leads to impotence or every time the person has to perform in a test or sing a solo in front of a crowd, they seize up and the person doesn't know why. Or the person can't seem to commit in a relationship and they don't know why. Or the person hates a coworker and right as they're about to lay into them, they get this feeling to be uncharacteristically nice and they let their mean coworker get away with it again. According to Freud's theory, they have too strong a condemning Superego subconsciously, usually a result of having too strict or abusive a parent, or maybe a parent who unknowingly was too flirtatious with the child. Consciously, they may truly want to do well on the test or have a good relationship. It's not about brow beating, that's just egoic rationalization. I'm not saying Freud was right or wrong, but the Id and Superego are not typically voices in the head (occasionally they can be, but even then we don't "hear" them as if they're another character, we think "oh I hate that person" but it's actually the thought of the Superego). They're much deeper than that.
    The ego's roll in this isn't to compromise in an economic way. Like you want one hamburger, you want three, I'll get two. The ego plays a roll only to the effect that ok, you go home to see your parents and you just clench your jaw and say I'll deal with another awkward Thanksgiving and I hope I leave before everyone blows up at each other. That's how most people's egos handle the conflict. But really what Freud wanted the ego to do was to become conscious of these forces. To be aware, Oh ok, my sister irritates me for no reason because when we were 5 I only felt love towards her, which at that prepubescent stage was felt as both love and erotic love, and my Superego like a dagger to my gut said, not so fast. And now the superego is hitting me with that dagger feeling every time I see her and I can't take seeing her for more than a day or two at a time. Freud in one sentence is "we unknowingly punish ourselves for things we unknowingly want."

      Hi,
      sorry but the Ego and Superego both have unconscious and conscious parts..

    • @MrAhuraMazda
      @MrAhuraMazda 9 лет назад +26

      ish123ism Well the Ego is ENTIRELY conscious, so that right there shows me you're not as read on this topic. The Ego, by definition is conscious, there is no subconscious Ego. The Ego is everything you think you are or know yourself to be.
      Now it may be true that the Id and Superego have conscious parts, but don't get caught up in that. The VAST bulk of Freud's theory dealt with the unconscious forces and this guy's explanation 100% misses the mark. It's a completely crap explanation and you don't have to ask me to validate that. Try it yourself. Take this guy's advice and see if it makes one ounce of difference in your life or the life of someone suffering.
      And this makes complete sense. Anything conscious is known. If something is known then it can be worked out and dealt with. If it could be worked out and dealt with it wouldn't be a problem. For example: Now a guy who tries to sleep with a woman and notices that he can't get an erection, and he's not of the age where that should be a problem, he will try his heart out to handle it consciously. Tell himself things like "it's not a big deal, relax, etc etc." That will probably not help that man, because the root of it is UNKNOWN to him. Unknown but knowable is the definition of subconscious forces. The job of Freudian analysis is to bring those unknown parts and forces to be known so that the man could say "ahh, that's why I can't get an erection because I have a part of me punishing myself for sexual feelings because my first sexual feeling was with my mother and I couldn't solve that problem in that early age." That's Freudian theory. Not what this guy is talking about. He's talking complete nonsense

      MrAhuraMazda187 I am a final year Psychology student. I have been learning about the Id, Ego and Superego since first year. I am currently taking a personality theories module and had a lecture on this topic yesterday by a clinical psychologist with 30 years plus experience. You can observe in a lot of literature that there is an unconscious part( as I learned yesterday) . This involves defense mechanisms which discretely prevent us from having increased anxiety and/or having to confront something we are unable to cope with.

    Kudos for rearranging the Freudian construction of Id, Ego & Superego. Let me contribute ideas in two areas. 1st is the topic of the big three. 2nd is the higher awareness you hinted about. ~ Each time we divide and label aspects of our thought processes we run into exceptions as you did at the end. I think of the unconscious and subconscious as the waters of a big pool of ideas, emotions, instincts and societal, cultural, & religious programming accumulated over a lifetime. The consciousness holds all that and the ego that we live through, as our expression of ourselves, like the face we imagine we look like to others. The ego swims and floats and dives in this pool. It is permeable and soaks up influences of the contents of the pool (with coaching, therapy or effort it can squeeze them out too ; ). The waters of the un- and subconscious effect the totality of our consciousness in ways we are both aware and unaware of in any given moment. Also those influences support and can overwhelm our ego that acts out or filters out what's going on within consciousness. ~ Eventually or intentionally we can be freed from identifying with these constructions. When that happens we are not in the pool anymore. We own the pool and enjoy a dip now and then but we no longer identify with it. The light of full awareness evaporates the unreal. What's left is in the moment, and draws from the totality of experience, wisdom and love. You still have a mind, preferences, abilities obligations etc. But nothing can threaten, scar, destroy or disturb any more. Those things are like wind across the water. You are at peace and happy and loving in every moment.

    Hi.
    I like your videos and i appreciate what you're doing man, i am actually a bit curious about how to get in that kind of enlightenment and fulfillment state of being 100pc yourself meanwhile you act according to a a social scheme and protocol that YOU have being building for yourself since earlier times, and this last one is serving you well with the difficult and complicated social situations, groups. ideologies, levels, backgrounds etc... In my very modest point of vue, i suggest there is a center of balance somewhere in this matter as it is the most of human life's aspects. My point is there is so much truth and all the videos of yours i have seen so far, but i guess there is other truths about the outside world that we need to take in consideration in order to achieve the harmony with the outside universe.
    I would love to know the titles of the books (or the most significant ones) of those ones you've been reading (seen in one of your videos i don't remember the title)... I'm really interesting in my own self development and i know from long time that my happiness is in wisdom and real knowledge of things, self and life. rather than achieving materialistic goods, statuses, relationships (fake ones), friendships (fake ones as well)... etc.
    I am so inspired by the way you took centuries of psychology and applied it in your life without sacrificing even the tiniest part of your personality. Keep on doing this noble and great job waking up people to themselves and sharing a sacred truth that's being carried along like a fireball by great men and saviors through centuries and civilizations. These things makes happiness. Truth be said.
    Sorry for not being and native English speaker, it took me a while to express my thoughts through this comment but i'm sure you get my point in spite of any possible linguistic misunderstanding.

    I loved how Leo marks those points of Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic theory that are obsolete or old-fashioned with the context of self-development and self-growth in the modern world, to be more successful and happy in life. Video firstly explained what ID, super-ego, and ego is with the help of Jonathan Haight's analogy.
    Sigmund Freud's model is not the exact description of how the mind works, rather it is just a more of a dragamatic way. As per Leo, Our mind can be divided into our unconscious lower self and conscious higher self. Lower self makes us do things for our pleasure, which aren't good for us in a long run and demands instant gratification and resembles with ID but the higher self is different from super-ego.
    Superego is ideal but also critical/judgmental as it is mostly driven by taking in concern the societal acceptance.
    Sigmund Freud's concept can be reformulated by taking out the critical part of superego and attaching it with Lower-self/ID. In this way, our higher self will be fully conscious where we think for our good in the long run with awareness. If we are not criticizing our self as we do in case of the superego, then it is not that we will be lazy or unmotivated, rather in peace we will have an emotionally strong foundation to act upon and this will result in conscious personal development with experience.

    I do not know if you read the comments or not, but how do you truly eliminate the Ego to obtain a higher enlightenment like the monks? How do you ignore what the Id wants ie, sex, pleasure, hunger, desire? Aren't those essential human biological functions? And what about the Superego? Isn't that just the ideals of what society believes to be right and wrong? Therefore, don't you NEED both of them to at least operate as a living being? So essentially, you have to let go what it means to be "human" to achieve this "enlightenment?" In which this "state" is beyond hummanity?

    • @JellisX891
      @JellisX891 7 лет назад +2

      "Wisdom must come only from the abandonment of selfish craving or desire." When you awaken from this illusion you'll realize it isnt giving up what it means to be human, its giving up what our perception of what being human is. Most people walk around thinking there is some purpose for what they do, what happens to them or why the world is here when the truth is there isnt any purpose to exist beyond what is happening. We are like music or dancing, to be here in this moment, and to travel through time but without a purpose in it. Alan Watts talks much about this and also what it means to be a human being, to be this enclosed surface that is topologically independent from the ground and has a sense of awareness of its self thats behind the eyes or deep within themselves and feels more than just this physical body.

    • @Ramiromasters
      @Ramiromasters 6 лет назад

      The ID is our animal self, the superego is our database of ideas and concepts. With this in mind, I figure if you were just an ID then you would function like an animal. If you only had a superego then you would be like those savants with tremendous abilities and yet no personality or capable of surviving for yourself. If you were just the higher ego, then I think you could do all tasks the other 2 could but it would be meaningless to you and slow by you thinking every move and consequence... So, enlightenment has to be the higher self in charge of ID and superego but empowered by them, thus achieving the trinity.

    Here's the thing. I think life wraps around perspective. I do not agree that having fun partying, drinking, or even smoking weed shouldn't be acceptable. Cause even though it is true that in the long run it only sets you back in terms of self improving you have to look at it on a different perspective. You can't be too hard on yourself. Having fun is essencial in life, and everyone has their one right to choose their purpose and perspective in life. IMO you just need to have a balance. No dependacy, no abuse.

    idk if someone d understand this and give his opinion too but anyway :
    "I am not controlling my horses 100% of the time"
    Maybe that s why i can't commit to some commitments
    Where is the problem exactly ?
    Is it in the horses ?
    no, cuz they re horses they do what their instinct tells them to do , they ll always be like that , cuz the second u tame them too much ,they start losing their power.
    So no it s not with the horses, not with the Ed
    Is it with the one controlling the horse ? Aka the ego , is he still not that good of a leader to control his horses extreme energy ?
    Or is it with his father , the superego, who is not guiding his ego enough ?
    This pops so Many questions in my mind but this proves also how Enormously important the rider is, which is the ego which seems in this metaphor like the center of value , cuz if the man was the best rider ever , everyone will be safe .
    But can he be the BEST rider ever ,one day ?
    Could my ego be Perfect someday ? How d be the relationship between him and his father ?
    The answer to this question hides in my mind's definition of that word i used : Perfect.
    I don't believe there is a perfect flawless ego , i believe in the perfect combination .
    Fucking wild horses , healthy ego and a wise ,not controlling, super-ego
    I think that s what Perfect meant.

    I interpret higher and lower self as choosing on which level the battle takes place between the Superego and the Id. I wouldn't send a portion of the Superego into the Id as the Id resembles instinctual urges (primitive food, sex, warmth). It seems we can give Meaning and Direct the Superego, but we can choose on what level we do so. In that sense, I envision partitioning the Ego into different levels, and a higher conscious self will make different rules and distinctions when juxtaposing the Id and the Superego

    Hellow Leo, i really like your videos, you're opening my mind for another perspective of way of life which im gratful for.
    but though i understood the whole point of the video, i still didnt understand how can i use this theory in order to gain happiness.
    should i listen to the ID ? or combine between the Super Ego and the ID?
    the ID is the monkey ancient impulsive thoughts and action which we have in ourselfes, and by obeying the ID wont all of us gain a happy life?
    should i not give a heck about what society think of me, or should it be more of a combination between the ID and the Super Ego ? if so, shouldnt i use only the Ego part, which is balancing between both of them?
    im confused.

    Sigmund Freud's model of psycho-dynamics is valid because
    Id is "force of expression" for gratification of need,
    Super ego is "force of suppression" for gratification of need
    Ego is the regulator/control of expression, suppression. and gratification. It decides when to express and when to suppress. It makes circumstantial analysis and after weighing the circumstantial reward and punishment, it decides in favour of maximum reward and minimum punishment, based upon its ability to escape/endure punishment or to secure reward.

    Leo this topic remids me the Fight Club movie. Where Tyler forces Edward Norton to lose all possesions, attachments, dignity to kill her ego and start doing what really wants in life. For me is the same effect that meditation, silencing the subconscious conditiened mind by belief system. Anothe technique i find useful to do challenging things is thinking that the point is in enjoying the action in itself, rather the outcome or final result.
    Imo supressing the ego absolutely is not the best option cos we're supressing also self steem.
    And about meditation, can silence the negative chattering but also the positive inner game. So I dont find a Win/Win techique. I'd like to hear your opinion.

    Hey leo, I love the analogy i makes it clear and comfortable to remember the functions of each element. There I have a doubt, id ie desire is the horse right. So does that mean that its only desire that takes us forward? And if it so why is it that some spiritual gurus or most religious leaders emphasize on renunciation.

    I think of them as parts of the brain. However there is a missing a part. The ID is the thalamus, amygdala, brain stem. The most primitive part of the brain pushing for those simple pleasures. The Superego is both left and right sides of the brain. Right side Creative or left side lawful, Strict, structured. Although the supper ego should really be separated into those functions.(that missing part) The ego is the prefrontal cortex, Discarding all those extreme thoughts coming from both right and left hemispheres.
    Although ID and superego are said to be unconscious, so to is mostly what the ego is doing. Conscious thought is random but actions are not. This means most of what you think you could do is superego, what you actually do ego is, so to speak, set in stone/neurons already arranged and ready for that normal action you always do. Rewriting that PFC or your ego is some tricky business, we are habitual after all.

    Leo i've introduced meditation to my life, and im practicing self acceptance. Is there a need for taking action in this process or is it mostly consciousness based?

    • @shahthegreat1
      @shahthegreat1 8 лет назад +1

      definitely action based. or more appropriately the lack of action. u need to stop acting on ur animalistic sexual desires for example masturbate, inappropriate sex, deny any action which leads to the sexual gratification for example checking women out, dressing to attract women attention etc only then u will kill the beast which tells u that u r not good enough. this is a direct answers to attain self acceptance towards your body. the actions would be different depending on what part of urself u are not able to accept. so first figure out what r u not able to accept.

    Very interesting that you say this is obsolete yet it does seem to still fit very early child hood development! We are still born Narcissistic, We still have to develop a conscience and a ego to mediate a healthy balance! Or is this all changed and you have come up with a more insightful explanation?

    The horse analogy in connection with the id confuses me, and I'm not sure if it serves to fully unpackage what the id is because it distances the ego from the id (beast and man).

    When this guy says that something like the ID or superego don't "really exist", what he's really REVEALINGLY is that he simply doesn't understand Freud's entire model. You always have to take these self-appointed "authorities" with a large grain of salt, because if you just accept what they say they can really put you off the track of understanding.
    Freud didn't just blurt out his theories after barely thinking about them, like the guy in the video, he spent years observing hundreds or thousands of people, making theories and refining them, before releasing them to the public. And you will find that even people who say Freud's ideas are "obsolete" actually incorporate them to some degree in their own thinking, virtually proving the very fundamental truth of maybe not all, but many of Freud's most important theories. You don't physically have a section of your brain that is the "id", but you definitely DO have an ID, ego, and superego as part of your mind. In addition, it's undeniable that your mind has both conscious and unconscious divisions, anyone can prove that to themselves just by thinking about their own mind.
    Freud was a genius who was the first to give us any idea of the functional make up of the mind, and adjustments and refinements are to be expected over time. But it's up to us to figure out how to apply it to our own lives.

    Interesting. Where does the standard for the higher self come from? How do you know when you've reached this standard? (if it didn't come from social conditioning or a church sermon).
    To clarify: I believe you are saying that the ultimate good standard comes from within the self. As if we should innately have an inner voice that tells us "this is good" or "this is bad" (hope I'm not misrepresenting your pov). If so, how do we decide between, say, sleeping with a married woman because she's into it and it would be fun, or not doing it because she's already spoken for? Curious to know your thoughts.
