I was worried about my future move to florida to become a teacher, but now I am starting to think logistically its very similar to NYC, except for the pay 😩
So interesting to hear the differences. I’m in VA and my state is somewhere in between. For subbing you don’t need a degree but you DO need a teaching certificate to be a teacher. My county also does inclusion the way you described in NY
Thanks for watching! Yeah it’s so weird how different states have such different education systems. Do you find that the inclusion model is beneficial?
It honestly depends on where in Florida you'd like to teach. My suggestion is calling the county's education offices directly to clarify that information. In Osceola County the salary pay scale does not give you enough information. What I've found out AFTER being hired in Osceola County is that after 14 years of experience you'll receive a $50 raise. I wish I was joking. Most teachers are being paid around the same amount unless they've been teaching for 20+ years. Here is the updated pay scale which again does not tell you everything. www.osceolaschools.net/cms/lib/FL50000609/Centricity/domain/142/2022-23%20salaries%20and%20supplements%20schedules/2022-23_SDOC_Instructional_Employees_Salary_Schedule_Board_Approved_060722.pdf
@@LearningWithLau Thank you so much for the information. I’m considering OCPS Orlando. I have a master’s degree in literature. I believe I would start at around $51,805 according to their website. I’m making about the same in Clark County Nevada. You need so much outside training to advance columns in LV.
@@damedechatfou3832 That's interesting. In NY you need to continue taking classes in order to advance as well. Also, if you are looking to stay in central FL, OCPS has higher pay and better benefits than Osceola (in my opinion). Good luck to you!
I have a bachelor degree that I completed in Italy and a certification in education that I did last year in England. I’m doing a master degree at the moment. I would like to teach French in Florida, preferably in middle school. What would you suggest me ? And how expensive are the rents ? Would I be able to live comfortably with the salary? Thanks in advance.
Hello! Thank you for visiting my channel. I would definitely look into seeing if there are any schools that teach French. The only languages I've seen taught in Florida (in the counties I've worked for) are Spanish and American Sign Language. So that would be your first step. Rent really varies on where you are looking to move. I personally would not be able to live comfortably without having my boyfriend help to split my rent with me. It really just depends on where you are and what your lifestyle is like. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you! :)
I agree with Lau! Only lasted two years and ended up working two jobs and using paycheck cashing joints to survive rent + car payment and health insurance in Duval Co. as a single woman. Fled for a job abroad and am much happier now. To throw in some things out of left field, my friend teaches French at a nice school outside of St. Louis. Also, I taught in Vegas for six years and was able to live FAR more comfortably there. They also just raised the pay for new teachers in CCSD (the school district that includes Las Vegas), and Vegas doesn’t have any state income tax like Florida. Hearing Lau is so gratifying 😂. I felt like teaching in FL was a nightmare even though I liked my students and the staff 🥺
Great question! There are obvious pros and cons to both states, but the pay was definitely better in NY than in FL (which is HUGE) and I found that the health benefits were also better in NY.
Are typical contract hours for teachers in Florida 8am-3pm? Do Florida teachers get the same vacation time like 2 months in summer, the week in Christmas, Thanksgiving and spring break? Do teachers get prep periods? Thanks so much for your videos, just some specific questions I had. I'm a PE teacher in California thinking of moving to Florida. Also a video suggestion, could you make a video on how or where to look for teaching jobs in Florida? CA has a specific website, edjoin, where all teaching jobs are posted but i haven't seen something similar for Florida. Do you have to contact the district asking if they have openings? I only see charter school teaching jobs but haven't seen any public school job postings just doing a Google search. Would be much much appreciated!
Hello! Thanks for watching. :) The hours depend on whether you are teaching elementary, middle, or high school. Florida schools start in August and finish at the end of May. We usually get 2 full weeks for Christmas break. We get a full week for Thanksgiving and a week for Spring break. We do get a prep period (just one), but we have shortened Wednesdays and we have the last hour of school to plan. I have some more resources in this video ruclips.net/video/k4bPStvktg0/видео.html regarding where to look for job postings and more. Hope this helps! Happy Teaching! :)
What county in Florida do you teach in ? What are some good reputable school districts in Florida that I should look into? Also, do school districts help pay for schooling if I wanted to go back for reading or ESL?
Hi Jen! Thanks for watching. I teach in OCPS. I am still fairly new to Florida so I'm not up on all the surrounding counties. Niche.com is a great website that I've used as a resource, so hopefully it can help you as well. I don't think that the counties pay for you to go back for those degrees, but they offer classes to get your required ESL hours. You can also check out this video that I made about how to get certified to teach in Florida. Hope this helps! Happy teaching! ruclips.net/video/k4bPStvktg0/видео.html
Hey if you don’t mind me asking when you first moved to Florida how did you find jobs to work at ? I know in New York you can check the DOE site but I didn’t really see that on the FLDOE site . So do you recommend using indeed or ?
Hello! I moved to Florida almost 3 years ago. There's no large database for teaching jobs like NY. You can use Indeed, but not all teaching jobs are posted there. I made a video that you might find helpful on how to quickly get a teaching job in Florida ruclips.net/video/k4bPStvktg0/видео.html hope this helps!
Hello! Your videos have been so helpful for me so far thank you so much! I was wondering if you would be able to answer a couple of questions I have about teaching in Florida. I am currently subbing in New York and graduated from an education program in Janurary. I am looking to move to Florida but just have some questions about teaching. Do have a facebook or Instagram that we can talk on?
What's something you learned about teaching in Florida that you never knew before?
I was worried about my future move to florida to become a teacher, but now I am starting to think logistically its very similar to NYC, except for the pay 😩
Hopefully no state tax will help to balance the pay.
There are some similarities, but the pay is definitely something to consider. Thank you for watching!
The cost of living has been going up in Florida over the past few years. Unfortunately, my salary has not.
So much info! Great video Lauren!
Thank you Peter
Thanks for another great post! I'll be sure to use it to convince my wife to move to Florida!
Thanks so much Robb! Feel free to share my email with her so she can reach out if she has any questions. :) LearningWLau@gmail.com

@@LearningWithLau Yes, I think it’s VERY beneficial. It’s great for the kids getting the inclusion and the other kids in the class too.
@@TeacherKellyTag Agreed! I loved teaching inclusion classes in NY.
“Planned downtime” is for everyone!
Yes!
I mostly just want to confirm the pay in Florida. How many years will they recognize from a different state as far as pay level.
