    This video was SOOOO helpful!!! Thank you. I am from NY and FL has so different when it comes to all this certification talk. I feel so lost and confused..lol, I just applied for a school counseling position here in FL but I have my Master's in Social Work. In NY it's kind of the same degree but not here. I went on an interview here and was offered the position. I have been so excited until HR contacted me with all these specifics that they need which has me so confused. Your video has helped me more than speaking to anyone I have about this situation and my next steps. I am also glad you mentioned going on that interview even if I am not certified yet (here), as that is exactly what I did and they offered me the position on the spot. Now I am trying to navigate through the FL DOE website but it's so confusing I have tried to contact them but the lines are busy and they have not responded to my email. I submitted the application online and paid the fee but I don't feel so sure of myself that I chose the right section there being it was so confusing :(

    Hey Lau!!! Great information!!!I have couple of questions for you though: did you do your interviews online and didn’t have to come down to Frlorida personally? What was the time frame of your applying- interview-job offer? And (very important for me to know because we will be moving with my family): Do they give you an actual job offer, so you can show it to a landlord in order to rent? ... because I heard that you can’t rent without a prove that you work or will be working.
    Thank you so much for doing all these for your fellow-teachers!!!!❤️❤️❤️

    PEOPLE, PLEASE check cost of living vs. salary! I assumed Florida would be cheaper than Vegas but the pay AND rent/cost of living were WORSE!!! (I was in Jacksonville.) Stay AWAY from Duval-pretty much anywhere else is better though! Even the county south of Duval pays better.
    On a funny note, dear speaker… You can always tell if someone is a native Floridian vs a snowbird by the way you say the name of the state 😂. Natives say “Flohr-ih-duh,” while northerners say “Flahrida” 😆. That said, it was definitely less noticeable after the intro, and I’m glad you are bringing attention to the Sunshine State!
    I had a terrible experience in Duval County because they refused to pay my grad degree stipend since the transcript said the name of the department (Curriculum & Instruction) instead of the literal word “English.” I made LESS in Jacksonville after 8 years of teaching with a grad degree than I made as a FIRST YEAR teacher in Las Vegas, NV! 😭
    I teach in China and make a lot more now than I ever did in the States, but did see online that salaries were better in central and south Florida, and other districts seemed far less vindictive; I don’t know any other word for it. Several teachers I knew completed a grad degree IN FLORIDA, only to be told by Duval that their degrees didn’t qualify for the same inane kinds of reason I was told 😳. (I’ve taught at many schools over a 15-year career and ONLY Duval ever had an issue 🤯.)
    I also would have lost my license and job if I didn’t take 18 hours of PD in my second year in Jacksonville because I had ONE kid in one class who was sped and another single kiddo in a second class who was EFL. So on top of not getting paid for my grad degree in secondary English ed., I was told I had to do all this extra PD for no extra pay, just to keep my job! It’s the law.
    The saddest thing is that the school itself was AMAZING-a magnet program with high-performing students and a phenomenal staff. But many left to transfer to other districts OR worked a second job (like I did) to make ends meet.
    Again, though-this was NORTH Florida, which I love! It just isn’t tenable for single income households. Central and south FL pay more and seem to value their teachers more 🥺.
    You don’t need to share salary info, but people who don’t have a partner to support them or a ton of savings should be aware. It’s a HUGE step down versus northeastern states and states out West (I am a Florida girl but started in Vegas with Teach for America.)

    • @LearningWithLau
      @LearningWithLau  Год назад

      Hello Abby! Thank you for your response! Yes, salaries for Florida teachers are not the best. It truly helps to have such a supportive partner to split the rent and other costs with. I hope you are doing well! :) Happy Teaching!

      Georgia for example. You can be paid significantly more for obtaining higher levels of education. The retirement plan is much better than Florida.

      Hello Diarra! Thank you for visiting my channel. As long as you have your bachelor's degree, you can become a teacher in FL. You'll have to pass the education tests within 3 years of employment. I hope this helped!

    I found this video very lacking in info if you are not a teacher by profession and want to become one.

    Florida is the worst state for teachers, lousy wages, terrible laws and state policy and huge level of corrutions from school administrators.

      It depends on where you are in Florida, but I agree that the wages are not what they should be.
