  • Joseph Massad, Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University, joins Dispatches with Rania Khalek to help break down everything from Israel’s value as an outpost of US imperialism and why the Arab uprisings failed to the recent victory of Palestinian resistance forces and why it’s crucial to incorporate anti-imperialism in our understanding of the Zionist project.

    At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
    We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
    People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
    We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

      Massad is clearly ignorant or a lier. He should be deported to Egypt where he can join the Islamic Brotherhood. He is a terror supporter and hates the US.
      The notion of Israeli colonial aggression is a popular lie of arabs and Islamists around the world. Massad's views on all subjects is completely warped.

  • @williams.1980
    @williams.1980 3 года назад +19

    This is unusually valuable because he lays out in straightforward way how Israel was a project of European elite anti-semitism well before the atrocities of WWII. This is usually a fact that is not even considered or understood. And this is something that is much less appreciated because the US is a relatively young nation and skyrocketed to being the biggest industrial power at break neck speed. So US culture is quite content being the moral superior of the world for taking care of one of the most persecuted peoples in history. That is what is on the front page and the more honest story is not even in the paper so to speak. There is a reason that states are basically taking propaganda pledges to obey the US. I was joking in another comment the other day that Blinkin was going around to other governments and telling them they have to support fascism or pay a price. This is actually the exact policy with Israel. If you don't go along with the anti-semitism farce you are in the crosshairs of US empire. Not a good feeling I'm sure.
    Maybe historians, I mean historians who aren't already committed to the colonial state zionist position out of fear for their career. Maybe historians need to play a bigger role in this discussion. It sounds like understanding the decades before WWII would do a lot in empowering people with an accurate understanding of the political, cultural, European, and colonial origins of the dispossession of the people of Palestine. And now the reality of the situation is becoming a threat to the Israeli plutocrats and the US sick state. The deep sick state.

    Glad that the Palestinian flag is flown from by Celtic football club fans in games. Because of this and more specially in the north of Ireland the Palestinian flag is still seen on flags poles in areas of Republican areas.. the native Irish people who got cut on the wrong side off the border and still under British rule up on till the late 90s, it's not hard to understand the British hatred towards the catholic minority in the north of Ireland and who there friends were protestants and loyalists and were there affinity for Israel comes from, yes makes perfect sense.. my heart breaks as I know my countries history and it was evil and a genocide in its own right imagine what the Palestinian people are going through.. I not religious and don't care what religion but wrong is wrong, come up with any reason for the treatment that they go through, it's the biggest scab still going on in the world don't care what anyone says I really do but they have been stabbed in the back many times, it's true zionists are the most evil monsters after the ww2. With the help of America but most European countries. Is-ra-al don't like the thought of politicians in Ireland bringing up the Palestinian cause. Happens more than you would think. Richard boyd barrett telling the is-ra-ali foreign minister he should be expelled from the country. It's a dieing breed but all the major political party's are all compromised in the west and most Islamic countries. The Shia muslims are the resistance.. from Syria to Iran.. Yemen all the countries that are mostly Shia are hated by Zionism and its allies in other countries in the region... 🙏🙏🙏🤝

I am beginning to feel that the Israelis should not pull the Nazi card until they treat the Palestinians as fellow human beings. Hamas and Nazis are the same thing, but not all Palestinians are Hamas, just as not all Germans were Nazis. And I applaud the minorities on both sides who are calling on their own people to wake up and stop the madness. @@erics7992 Therein is the problem because many of you white nationalists don't know your history or ethnography very well and make stupid generalizations that have no basis in historical facts. Modern Anatolian Turks are NOT ethnically Central Asian. This has been proven time and again. They are by and large Greek remnants together with Persians (which includes Kurds) and some Arabs. The Greeks expelled in the early 1920s were done so for reasons largely having to do with language and religion, and almost nothing to do with genuine ethnography which the waning Ottoman authorities of that time didn't have the slightest clue about. Besides, the father of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, himself was most probably of Greek stock, especially given where he was born and where his family came from. So keep trucking!

    What is this, a history lesson ? Make your point short, sweet and then move on to the next point. Too much blather and blah, blah...can't take it

    First and foremost, I respect professor Massad. However, this was waay too long and dense. Are you trying to communicate with Wall Street or Main Street? Obviously, this will be accepted by Wall Street's prep schooled demographic. Main Street will be left dangling in the wind. In my humble opinion, Main Street needs to be educated more then Wall Street. Just sayin'. :(

      @@waaaaaht Economy of writing style is much sought after. Likewise, economy of any type of communication is also desirable. At over and hour, this is a huge investment in time. Short attention spans, like mine, struggle with this hour long presentation. I just think (considering the bleak state of Main Street's attention span) maybe something more economical would be preferable.

      @@jacklyncheung4993 Perhaps I am mistaken, my sense of the thrust of this conversation was a CHANGE in perception of the Palestinian plight for the better. Professor Massad correctly talks about how erroneous that change really is. My suggestion is to redirect attention to Main Street perception management and away from Wall Street perception management. (which is what is happening n this video). Successful perception management on the Vietnam War happened when it was directed towards Main Street with daily repeated information. It worked. These long drawn out dense discourses have proven to be quite ineffectual.

      @@pdurpan You’re right. Both short form and long form are required. Some people like to dig deeper and learn about the history. That’s what this sort of interview is for. But political change becomes more possible when Main Street -as you call it - becomes generally aware of the reality of a given situation. Short nuggets of information are therefore needed to help people understand that Israel is not a regular state, but actually a weird militarized society where everyone is a soldier involved in killing or stealing to some extent or another. And that the state has been doing some pretty sadistic stuff since its inception. I sometimes think that Palestinians have too much information and they try to share all of it (rightly so) but then it becomes overwhelming when newbies to the issue try to learn about it.

      khalek is a dimwit demagogue who thinks in notoriously simplistic terms; sad to see JM parrot her silly "anti-imperialist" cliché that the US is the only imperialist power in the world. his mentor was sharper.
