Nancy, you are a gem. I've been doing a lot of research before I order my supplies and I keep coming across your wonderful videos & website. You have answered so many of my questions (and knowing how every tool & metal comes in a million variations, you know I had a ton!). Normally I might avoid a video longer than 10 minutes, but sat riveted through this one. :)
I really loved this video - so much. I've heard snippets of each of those products, never was this compared to the others in the same category. I'm kinda overwhelmed, but since this video was made 7 years ago, I know it will be there for me when I need to go back to it. I have pages of notes though! You're a doll - and I thank you so much. I'll be back - you teach me so much each time I watch. Whew!
What a thorough as possible video on finishing. Nancy, you managed to cover so so many different methods and products / materials in a relatively short time, considering the subject. I think anyone, even a long serving Jeweller would have at least a few new ideas within this. Thanks for all you do for the community, of which, I am feeling more and more a part of, despite being such a newby.
Awesome, I voted on this :) On a side note I made a really fun long straight link chain with jump rings connecting them. Kind of like 3 inches of 16 gauge with the edges hammered then jump ring etc. Had it contoured to fit the neck nicely and then I tried to polish it :/ Its amazing how fast straight sterling silver can become a ball when its winding around the thingy at 4 zillion rpm lol. I will now watch the video and learn to do it right, thank you! Tommy
RUclips reads my mind, at least once a day, I swear. I was making a piece of custom jewelry, for the sake of nostalgia. I wanted to polish it "a bit", not to a sparkling shine, but still having a bit of light reflection to it, as it's a rough semi-precious stone/crystal. Then this video showed up... Now I know what this bit ( 25:40 ) in my rotary tool toolbox, is for. Thanks! 🤗
Thanks for another great video! I'm learning metalsmithing on my own and I ordered some red rouge and brown tripoli because... I wish I could say it was because I knew I needed them and exactly what they were for, but in reality I was like ooh! I heard the smart people talk about those! Add to cart! So, now, as usual, coming at it bassackwards, I know what the heck to do with them. Thanks!
Hi Yazzie Bee, Thank you so much for the amazing comment. I am very grateful for viewers like you. You make all the hard work worthwhile. Thank you. Nancy
Nancy! I love this video! You have so much knowledge and I'm glad your sharing it! This is going to help me get more vibrancy and shine on my handcrafted jewelry! -Chelsea
Let me just say that the Studio Assistant is AWESOME! Love when he's in working. Nancy your videos are so helpful. I'm a newbie but after watching you I can now name every tool on a workbench. I know what its for and what it costs too. Keep up the great work! Need ya! Lol
Was a jewelry model maker for 18 years and am not quite familiar with some of these technical terms : D Great stuff Nancy. Your vids are informative and entertaining. After all, jewelry is supposed to be fun. The Zen of Metaltation. ; )
I'm so glad that you you talked about polishing chain. I don't have a tumbler so wrapping the chain around a thick round thing to anchor it really does seem like it's much safer than not using one. I'm going to try that the first chance I get. I have found with my little bit of experimentation, that I also prefer the sanding paper wheels than anything else. I wish that there were pro polishing pads for the flex shaft.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! There are so many choices in the catalogs and your video help me so much in defining what I want to accomplish and how to get there.
how did you get so darn smart!!!! I like the class video that you and another friend did when you guys were so funny ...like no one ever before..she did melting copper that made an abstract design beautiful the world needs you ...you could do stand-up like both of you
Thank you for your amazing videos. Studying Jewellery manufacture at the moment and your videos are of great help. The link to the info sheet was brilliant - Thank you :)
Great to see ya back, Nanc! Excellent info and you know I like your emphasis on safety... I'm thinking though, for the videos, you should take magic marker and put ridiculous smiles on those paper filters... "finishing" touch...
Hi Gin, Nope, not necessary. Actually, I don't use my polishing motor all that much - usually for bigger pieces or for production (which I don't do often). So, have fun polishing/finishing with your flex shaft. Take care and thanks for the comment. N
Thanks for the cute comment! Now those ugly finger thingys have a name: leather thimbles! Who would have thunk it? Thanks so much for enlightening ye olde jewelry woman. Take care and continue to have fun. Nancy
LOL! You're a trip lady! I wish I had your studio/setup! I really do enjoy your videos. I need to check, but have you ever done a video on how to drill glass bottles? I have all of the tools, but I'm afraid to use them! I know, silly, right? I think if you did a video on it, I'd probably be braver and ready to try it. It's up to you, but could ya? Would you please?
I like to use painter's tape. If you can, tape off the area that you want to protect. You could also try painting some heated-up beeswax over the area to protect too. Nail polish might work too. Use a fine-tipped brush. You'll need nail polish remover to take it off later and to clean your brush. I haven't tried this but, seems like it should work? A lot depends on how much surface area needs to be covered and how easy it is to access. Using silicone points also helps. You can re-shape or sharpen them on a file by dragging the abrasive (in a flex shaft) down a file's surface. Wear a mask! Rio Grande sells them: www.riogrande.com/product/dedeco-silicone-midgets-polishing-point-assortment/332877. Thanks! N
Hi, I recently bought Fabulustre to polish my handstamped metal. I have a tumbler but wanted a brighter finish. I used it with a dremel but it is leaving a dark coat on my metal and looks dirty. What am I doing wrong? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Are there any issues with sanding and drilling into brass like how you mentioned with copper. Currently I do this work inside with a mask and just sweep up after
Hi, Nancy! I know this video is very old video, but I found it the most relevant for my question. You said you don't usually coat your copper and brass, but in that case how do you protects the customers' skin from turning green? I have tried a few types of wax and polish but they absolutely do not work for rings and the metal ends up oxidising and colouring people's skin
Thanks for watching that antique! Haha. I stopped making rings and bracelets in copper, brass or bronze - unless they are prototypes. They can be sealed but, the sealant will wear off - especially on rings and bracelets. It's a never-ending conundrum! You can also sweat solder a silver lining onto the insides of both bracelets/cuffs and rings. Extra work though. I haven't found a great solution. You could try a clear, shiny or matte powder coating? Good luck! N
Hi Nancy, just watching this video, a few years or so after you posted it, and the link for the buffing compounds information is no longer pointing to a pdf. it now points to their website's sales page. IF you still have access to the pdf could you please contact me? Thank you.
Ill try this agin thought I sent it lol thank u so muh that's so sweet of u I will be on standby then hun . I have chkd the site but didn't see anything on silver plate unless I missed it ill chk again. Ur fab thank u!
Hi Bluecorner, Have you checked out EverBrite's site? They have a ton of information on their products. I have never tried it on silver plate but, don't see why it wouldn't work. I just emailed them and will let you know what I hear. They have the best customer service department! Love 'em. Thanks for the post and take care. Nancy
Hi Nancy, I have a 18K gold bracelet that there is satin finish on surface of gold. there is very light scratches on gold, so I want to refinish the surface. What do I do first? Sand it or high polish it or just use the satin finish wheel? Thank you so much for your video.
Your so funny, I'd watch you just to laugh, thanks though for all the great info, I really have learned a lot from you...keep those comedic videos coming! :)
Awesome video, It makes me reget to be a psychology student... Would it be like really expensive to pick up jewelry as a hobby once I graduate gear and raw materials-wise? (titanium and silver?) I'm a huge fan of rings despite being a guy... It would be nice to upload 1080p videos by the way, I couldn't see much of the finishes ^^ - Thanks from France o/
Hi Cynthia, thanks so much for the funny comment. WeeWee LoLou is a bit of a ham and insists on being in the videos. She's thinking of creating her own RUclips videos on kitty cleaning and maintence. Her brother Ralph, will demostrate how to give a kitticure (he does his own mani/pedis). Take care and keep having fun. Nancy
hey Nancy; very informative / lively video about buffing stuff ! i'm trying to BUFF ( should i say SHINE ?) small steel pieces you find on the shelves of the building materials at " home depot". they use those pieces for combining wood in various ways for construction. since those pieces are relatively small, they fall under the same category of what you talk about in your video. i'm only looking to SHINE a piece, NOT to eliminate scratches, etc. but i'm still confused : mostly about the SEQUENCE of the buffing process, and : the materials/ compounds to use. in other words : what compound to start with ? what next ? etc. i got a hand drill powerful enough as a wheel mover and i have the " buffing kit" from home depot. if you clarify further the points i made ~ that would be lovely 😇🙀 much thanks in advance; amir
hello Nancy, I have just started to learn how to clean my own stuff.I collect watches and most are in need of a great polishing.I always thought it had been replated. Can polishing watch bezel's make them look like they have been replated? If polishing does what I need, what are the tools I need to start with.Including the liquids and waxes or polish that I can start with. Thanks John, especially for your teaching methods, very informative for someone like me.
Hello, I have a titanium finished watch case and took to a dremel with 320 grit buffing wheel but I cannot seem to get an overall even satin finish as i usually do on stainless steel. I have on order some radial bristle discs 320 & 400 grit to see if they can improve the job but it is getting expensive ordering all these accessories... i am almost thinking of using barkeepers friend and polish by hand to try and get an overall even finish but not so sure.. Do you know of any pastes out there which can be hand applied to touch up a satin finish after dremel use? Thank you!
hi, can anyone help, when I go to buff my silver with the flex and the bench grinder, the white wheels I use just go black, then the black goes over the rest of the piece ? all my white pads are all black now, anyone else had this problem ? I bought a block of rouge but its like a copy one, could it be that ? is rouge meant to be soft mine is rock hard ? any help will be appreciated thanks

You put a lot helpful extra info into your videos that others do not - with Kitty Kat Humor. Thank you for your extra effort.
Wonderful tips. Your explanations are simple and easy to watch and put in action.

Hello Nancy I have a question for you. How do you protect a polished surface when your have doing a brushing surface very close to it ?
I like to use painter's tape. If you can, tape off the area that you want to protect. You could also try painting some heated-up beeswax over the area to protect too. Nail polish might work too. I love the PSA discs, but they cant get into the tiny areas. Going to try the little points.

Nancy, what do you recommend for removing scratches and polishing handstamped disks? I just recently purchased a flex shaft. What can I use with it?
I feel you! The cat fur in my mask has been quite a problem since COVID-19 masking.
HAHAHA!
Can u make a video on how to do texture on a name necklace
What a great video, thank you so much!!
I want to be friends with this lady, she's funny and weird (in a good way).

great video thank you very much.
Fantastic! Thank you for the video.
You're hilarious, and your cat is crosseyed! So cute! I'm a friend of Gabis!!
Thank you so much for video clip. I am learning so much. P.S. Cute little kitty cat.
This is so helpful I'm sure for everyone.. Do You use any sealer on your jewelry? Like Lacquer to permanently seal them?
Are we supposed to wash our piece between each compound? Will it cross contaminate somehow? I think this may be a problem I’m having.

Hello,

Nancy, do you finish textured metal the same way?
I knew someone that was polishing wire and it got caught around the buff. The top of their finger got cut off.
Are there any real down sides to using zinc As a metal?
I would've loved to see how the rubberized ring polishers are attached to the screw mandrel; can't find how anywhere.
Great Vid Nancy. What kind of Buffing motor do you use? Its just the size that I am looking for.
hi, can anyone help, when I go to buff my silver with the flex and the bench grinder, the white wheels I use just go black, then the black goes over the rest of the piece ? all my white pads are all black now, anyone else had this problem ? I bought a block of rouge but its like a copy one, could it be that ? is rouge meant to be soft mine is rock hard ? any help will be appreciated thanks
Thanks so much for video very informative.
fantastic.
How would you polish fine filigree casting semi mount ?
chain has to have a fat buff 50 or 60 ply or it turns into a deadly whip and that sticky gause is great!!!
This may have already been asked but I can't find it- can you use a dremel in place of the flexshaft? I already own a dremel and I'm brand new to the hobby, so I'm trying to ease in with the tools ;). Thanks!
And they've just come out with a lightweight Dremel that is also narrow, like an electric toothbrush, so can easily be held in one hand!
Wow Tommy, glad you still have a face (and a neck and a head, etc.). Were you scared to death? I've had that happen too which is why I don't do it anymore!!!!! Sounds like a great necklace. Did it survive? Glad you voted on this one. Thanks for a timely and cautionary comment! Take care and be safe (ahem). Nancy
