Cool I never thought of the idea of stamp the bezel wire before!

I always have a hard time measuring my bezel wire accurately. I'll think it fits but then end up being too small after I solder to the backplate. The paper measuring tip is so helpful. Thank you!
It's very simple, but surprisingly accurate! Haha :) And it's always better to cut just a bit more than you think you measured, easer to adjust :) Thank you so much for watching ❤

Wonderful tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing it :) I've found that the part of this I struggle with the most is getting the sizing of the ring itself correct when it's not a fully closed ring. I have a Rosie Revolver from Pepe tools but I'm struggling with how to use it properly so the ring actually gets sized the way I want!

Thank you for another beautiful video, both in content and filming.
Perfect timing as I'm making a cab stone ring next, plus earrings, a set using 10mm Rose Quartz. I'm making the 40 x 20 pendant at the moment. Fine silver bezel wire onto an Argentium back. I've got the bezel under weights to take the twist out. It's only 3mm high x 0.3mm, so I want to avoid filing the side down as it may not hold the stone then. So a bench block and some other metal bits should be left overnight to take the twist out. When I put it on a flat block as it will sit in use, there is a longish gap under the edge. I tried manipulating it, but it did not want to play, shame.
Excellent video, back to basics, is perfect for all your new viewers who have yet to find your back catalogue but also for people like me who need a good teaching video on something we may not have done for a while or even much of. So perfect timing for me to work along to.
I love the stamping on the bezel; I've never seen that before on a bezel, another Basia original... The ring looks perfect, and I love the pre-made ready-to-use rings. Saves time and effort. Fantastic looking gem. One tiny point; If you make the bezel too small, solder it, then put it on your ring mandrel and use a soft hammer, nylon/rawhide, to work the ring a little larger; remember to invert the ring on the mandrel halfway through so it is not conical. Don't hit too hard, mark the metal, or damage the stamping.

I can't claim that stamping on a bezel is my original idea, definitely not! I've seen others do it and I love this effect, I had to try it out myself 😃

Around 8:40 mark what did you put in the setting? Some twirly wire? Where does one get that? Did you do that instead of sanding down the setting? Can you please explain. Thank you
I wish i had learnt that you should use fine silver instead of sterling to do the bezel ring... That would have saved me two rings
Beautiful ring. I need to try stamping the bezel. That looks so pretty. And as for your question: annealing. I understand the concept but I have yet to successfully anneal anything. 😅
Same here! I´m new to silversmithing and need to learn about annealing. If i understand i correctly it is easier to do in a dark room to see the metal "change color". But do i pickle after?
Oh you totally have to try it! I can't believe I waited so long to try stamping on a bezel, it looks very pretty. The effect is definitely better on a thicker bezel though, be careful when stamping a very thin wire. As for annealing, it's actually very simple. When you take a wire and it's hard to form, you heat it up slowly and pay attention to the colour. No need to overheat it or turn it red. Just when you see that the temperature "travels" on the metal it starts changing colour, that's when it's ready. Cool it donw in cold water (quenching bowl) and you'll see that now it's much easier to form. Good luck!
Very good point, Alice. It's best to do it with dimmed light, so that you know when the metal starts changing colour and you know you won't overheat it. There is a neat trick of painting the metal with a sharpie - once the sharpie's gone, the metal has been annealed! :)

1)What is that tape paper?
2)Can I stamp even on 28 ga bezel wire or does it need to be thicker bezel wire?
3)What did you use to remove patina from high spots? Pro polish pads? I struggle with removing too much patina from design!
Always love your videos! Using the bottle warmer is genius, especially in small spaces, which is my situation, as well. What kind of plastic cup do you use in the bottle warmer that will hold up under the constant heat and pickling solution? Keep up the good work!!
Hi! Thank you so much, I'm very happy you enjoyed it :) I love this little bottle warmer, it's such an excellent solution. I use a container, in which a ready-made soup was sold. This container is meant to be put in the microwave when you're heating up your soup, so it's very resistant to the heat and it stayed in the exact same condition for the past two years!

I'm sorry, I don't. But I think I bought them at Cooksongold in the UK and I believe Rio Grande, in the US, has them too! I hope you will be able to find them

I think so, yes. You can try with a hard solder paste

Absolutely! This is just one way of doing things :)
Firstly, and most importantly,I love your Stitch tshirt! What thickness is your bezel wire please, Basia? I'm looking for a thicker (than 0.3mm) fine silver wire (UK), Cookson only have 0.3 I believe.
Thank you! I love this t-shirt too 😍 I think this bezel wire is 0.4mm or 0.5mm, something around that. I bought it at jeweller's supplier shop in Krakow (Poland), so I'm not sure where they would have it in the UK. You can check if they have a fine silver sheet, then you can buy a soze like 70mm x 50mm for example and use calipers to cut it into bezel wires. The thickness will be better and you can control the width. It will also be fine silver, so softer to work with. If that won't be an option, you can go for the sterling silver sheet and anneal before shaping. It may be a bit harder to work with than fine silver, but you wil be able to get that thicker bezel. I hope this helps a little xx

Ridiculously I'd never typed it into Cookson and never scrolled passed the 2mm thick sterling silver sheet until now. Thank you, Basia! That's just made my day ❤️
Where did you get that tool to hold your ring shank in place for soldering? It looks like hand made. If so do you have instructions?
Can I use silver sheet and make a bezel wire out of it and just anneal it to soften it?
You can! But yes, you will need to anneal it and it may be quite difficult to work with, so you need to be prepared. Perhaps using a pusher may not be enough, you may need to do some tapping with a hammer on a pusher or even use a hammer handpiece. And if you do do that, please remember to not use a fragile and soft stone, like labradorite, turquoise or opal, as these may break. Maybe you could try a piece of fine silver sheet?

Oh dear, that does sound like me! It get's better, don't worry! You'll practice that skill and eventually you'll hit it less (though I still hit it and displace it sometimes, so I guess that just happens anyway from time to time lol) 😃
How did you get the patina on the stamped parts only? Wouldn’t it all have come off if you wiped it off ?
I used a little brish to apply it onto the stamped area. Patina sticks to the detailed areas and wasn't removed when polishing
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing ohhh so the patina will come off with sanding/polishing on the flat areas?
@@FriskyTendervittles yes, it will! But it won't come off with just rubbing with the polishing cloth for example. It needs something coarser to come off. But will stay in all of the stamped areas :) unless you really go at it in there with a bristle wheel haha :P but if you're careful, then it will be ok
