It's all in how you look at it....I consider it a CHEAP way to get that much performance and reasonably practical. 4 years of ownership and only had to replace the throttle actuators. 112k miles
As someone who has at this point had his fair share of M cars and currently with a modded F10 M5. I can tell you that the horror stories are so overblown. Get the dealer coder, do the rod bearings and get a manual and 90% of the problems are mitigated. Make sure to use a high quality oil that's has stronger film strength but not as thick as the 10w60 and you'll be fine. Lubrication is the big issue on the S85 and S63.
Just got 100k miles on my m6 V10! I put 45k miles on it myself and so far I have never had any problems with the car besides regular maintenance! I think the key is to drive it. If you let the car sit for too long then you will get problems. Definitely one of the most reliable BMW I have ever owned!
Same here E90M3, got it with 57K four years ago, at 127K now, no problems, maintenance is more expensive then a regular car because you do have a real motorsport engine but you knew that beforehand, very solid cars. Any car that sits can develop problems but agree 100% these cars should be driven, most reliable car I ever had in the 35 years i drive.
Great to hear! I've got a white M6 V10, only has 53k miles on it. I need to drive it more, as I only take it out a couple times a month. Looks pristine totally stock, I've just got other cars that I drive on a daily basis. Too many videos on here knocking the e60 & e63 M cars. In the end paying $2500 to do rod bearings every 100k miles and under $4k for SMG work around that expected mileage, who cares. There is nothing I could find under $40k that matches what these car do for me. Cheers mate
Josh Wagner I got my M6 around that milage too. Just make sure you do the oil change every 4-5k max, let the car fully warm up before hard driving( VERY IMPORTANT), and do the rod bearings around 75k to be safe. I paid 1600 dollars to do that. Not bad at all for every 75-100k . And why 4000 dollars for the smg?! The pump is only 350 dollars. You don’t need to replace the entire sms transmission if the pump goes bad. Just recently replaced the clutch and pump ( 95k miles on original clutch which is really reliable I think) and paid only 1400 dollars for everything including clutch and pump and it drives like new again. In case for throttle actuators which usually go bad around 60-80k , You can get remanufactured one for only 400 dollars with lifetime warranty. I just replaced both as for maintenance before they get back. They were both still original and lasted 100k miles for me👍🏻 ! If you know about the car and know where to get the parts for cheap, the car is not that bad at all. Those people who are complaining are those who have no idea about the car and just get ripped off here and there. PM me In case you have any questions. Enjoy your car buddy :)
jorque d glad you have had a good experience with you M3 so far. I think the problem is that many owners don’t know how to treat these type of cars. I know a guy he got 160k on his m3 and his car looks and drives like new without any serious issues!
@@arash_LAThanks so much for the comment and support! Yep I've had smg cars in the past. Current own a Z4 3.0 with smg so I have had my hands in dealing with repairs there but like you said it was pretty much in the timing of when a clutch would need done anyway. Rod bearings were new info to me when I got the M6 so I got a quote from my favorite ATL area shop here for $2400 to do the work. Guess my point in the previous comment is these were once $100+k cars and certainly drive a nice as one. Picking up one for $20k makes the car a no brainer for what you get because preventive maint even budgeting on the high side (worst case situations) still values the car investment well below any of the other cars I was looking at getting. Thanks again!
I'm a huge fan of the e60. I think it's the best looking 5 series. I have the n62. It spent most of its life on the interstate and was relatively easy to maintain until I started driving more in town than the interstate, but I have over 300k miles so it has done its job.
I have a 2006 BMW M5 and I have owned it for 2 years and I drive it as I please! Do I dog it? No! Do I push it when time allows? Most definitely. When I first purchased the car not knowing the entire history from year to year. Within the first year alone I had the rod bearings replaced with BE Rod bearings and ARP Studs, fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle body actuators, idle actuators, Ionic Current Modules, spark plugs, coil packs, obviously numerous of oil changes. Oil was changed 500 miles after rod bearings installed. Then again at 1,000 miles, and after that resumed intervals of 5,000 miles. New tires with Continental Contact Sport 02, new rotors, pads, parking brake refresh kit, rear suspension with Bilstein B6’s in the rear, differential bushing replaced and diff fluid flushed, coolant flush, power steering reservoir, coolant level sensor. Oh and I interior and exterior lights with led’s. I think that’s it. If you take care of it it will take care of you.
We can’t get the manual M5/6 in the UK, they only went to North America. I don’t understand how anyone in North America can buy a non-manual one, you should be grateful you have the option! They’ll definitely appreciate as time goes on and powerful manuals become more and more desirable.
This is my dream car. However, as I get closer to finishing school, I realize that I won't be able to rely on this car as a daily, but more as just a weekend car. Even if it's a boring, big sedan and not a sports car, the V10 exhaust note is good enough to make it the weekend car.
@@HB-tf5mv I did all preventative maintenance at 100k. I've had to do bushings all around, routine maintenance ( plugs coils fluid flushes brakes ). Pcv Valves, fuel injectors
@@HB-tf5mv that's the biggest red flag. I would be more comfortable with a 140k miles one owner than 70k 5 owner tbh. Shows that they wanted it gone quick. And also more miles means that it was compliant in aquiring those miles and will likely easily accept more in the future. That's my two cents Edit: also avoid first model year! Only redemption would be if the car is cosmetically prestine, and you can get the price down to around the 17k mark to have some cushion for repairs/ rod bearing replacement (I assume it has OEM bearings too.)

I have yet to modify my 2010 E63 M6 (50k miles )..still undecided regarding the exhaust mod . I'm glad to see your E60 back in business!
Friend of mine here in Dallas has one. It prob has 120,000 miles on it. He is the only owner. It's had it's issues. Motor has been rebuilt, but now it's a 5.5 Stroker motor!
What u don't like about this car?) - hydraulic unit (6500$) - hydraulic pump (1500) - rod bearings (3000$) - vanos pump - throttle actuators (1200) - clutch, flywheel (2000$) But other than that it's a great car)) Having a car from 75k miles up to 115 had to remove tranny back and forward 8 times) each time it's 800$ labor
I have a E60 528i with 98,000 lol, the maintenance is killer, the engine has been ticking too. Sounds like the common lifter problem. But geez, crazy props to Alex and any other dedicated 5 series owners lmao
As a german... i dont really see the problem. You pay a lot less than you would for a new car and if something breakes you replace it... still cheeper than a new one. In Germany some might say: BMW = Bring mich Werkstatt = Bring me workshop, but i really dont mind replacing the heater or what ever breaks on my 2003 E46... i even enjoy it. I dont know much about the E60 parts... but if you speak a bit of german i bet that you could find A LOT of videos on youtube on how to fix any problem on your car, just like americas do it with old american cars.
I like Bring mich Werkstatt. In the USA we use BMW= Break My Wallet. Nice car, awesome performance, but people need to be prepared for expensive replacement parts and the maintenance they require. Also ,find a good independent technician and stay away from the BMW dealership or you really will be broke.
You guys in the US are so lucky, a nice LCI like mine fully loaded costs 50.000 Euros+ here in the EU with about 60.000miles. I would've bought a manual in a heartbeat if I was living there.
in the year 2020, this sounds like a bargain supercar -- IF you purchase it knowing you already have funds set aside to replace the clutch, SMG pump, and certain other wear items. I look forward to owning one.
I also has a valve spring break on my ‘13 e92 M3 DCT trans with 30K miles. Out of warranty, but BMW did a partial goodwill based on my loyalty. Valve spring issue is more prevalent than people think on s85/s65. But most of them occurred with the original owners and within factory warranty
I really don't understand why people screaming about 120.000 miles..It's normal miles if the car is From 2005 and people drive it.If you don't earn money don't Buy it. Then Buy something else . Those cars need love and maintenance. It's simple
If you are a DIY'er like me, it is worth it. Headaches are par for the course with any exotic race car. Mine got 94k miles 2008, white on white. Enjoy!
I’m the second owner of my 2010 e60 m5. Bought it with 23k miles on it. Replaced the smg clutch and pump at 89k. For the price of those repairs, I could have built a swapped 2jz e30. Now I want a GTR
don't do the agency power headers. i have them. and i prefer the stock sound. catless headers dont make the car any louder, just less refined. im actually thinking about putting the stock ones back on
One car close to the m5 people forget is the e60 550i with m sport package and staggered wheels. Its awesome and as fast with its 4.8 v8. I own one, its been really really reliable. I bought it with 100k and I have 147k so far. Those run flats have been pain in the ass. Those wheels are easily damaged by pot holes and replacing them is expensive. Other than that, its an awesome car.
@@mattbudesa3038 well not exactly but tell you what, i wouldn't upgrade to this m5 bcz there's no quantum leap. Yes it did 204mph,has a v10 but my 550i m sport is at least 80% this M5
Owning an e60 M5 the smg , rod bearings , vanos , throttle actuators , coil drivers are a ticking time bomb ... and if it got wrecked ..... no no no I’m still getting one though
I am taking my older brother's 2008 BMW 535i and when I get this car, I will turn it in to an M5 and to do it, I am getting an M5 parts car that is the same color as his BMW 535i
I did the E90 M3 for a while, over my 2 years spent 8.5k on a combination of preventive and needed repairs. I didn't even do the throttle actuators. My all in total cost per month was over 1k per month on a 27k car lol.
everybody thinks the bmw following is because of how well built the cars are but really its just a contest of who can own the most unreliable car, and this car is the holy grail to these people
Hey Eddie, I have a Seat Cupra 290 2018, which is a little hot hatch similar to the GTI but with 290 HP (Golf R Engine Spec), not for sale in the US. If you are ever near San Antonio, TX. Let me know, would love you to give it a look.
120k miles high ?.. i have a bmw E60 m5 with 240k kilometres on it from "05, the earlier models had some issues but most of them have been rectified through dealers under warranty. because these cars are so labor intensive to work on it is expensive to maintain if you bring it to a dealer or garage. You have to learn to fix it yourself, if you are not a mechanic you will become one. Thats why i work on it myself now, in 5 years of ownership i spent 2,5k € on parts wich where mostly preventative maintainence, like the vanos high presure line, spark plugs wires, coils, cooling hoses maf sensors, belts waterpump, thermostat, distribution chain + guides and tensioners inspection of the vanus pump, replaced the actuators,. it was a lot of work, but well worth. i drive it without any issues except general maintenance and frequent oil changes. it has been a very reliable car for me. value is only going up, never ever is there gonna be a 5.0 v10 sedan again
Good video Eddie. Do you travel to do these videos? Would love to see if you can do a version of a TOTAL opposite V10 that is fully modded to the max and ridiculous clean. I bought the car new and have over 119k HARD miles and would be cool to get perspective of a FBO Modded V10 vs a stock high mileage v10. Look up my IG at GMW362i or my RUclips page and message me. Interested if you are and we can talk details. In regards to the car it’s all about maintenance.... People need to remember this was a “Super car” of its time and that price tag doesn’t go away... Take care of the car and it will take care of you. May the legendary V10 M5 live on!
I want a bmw so bad, but after watching some videos this is like the only one that says it’s a good car, every single person on earth says it has alota issues and shit, and I’m not that rich to pay 1k dollars everyday. I don’t rlly know what to do atm.

Hey EddieX you should make a video about the Audi S6 with the V10
Yes pls!!!
I actually did review one back on VV, the one that JRGarage bought lol
EddieX do another!
@@EddieXwhats the truth on JRGarage
I own a V10 M6, its f*cking awesome and i straight piped mine on my channel!
the moldy seat belt is driving me crazy... Cool car but don't think I would own one.
kai diego it’s only like that because of the accident as water got inside due to the damaged door
E60 m5 boring?? Bro what are you on lol
My 07 has nearly 148,000 miles going strong.
What issues have you had? I’m looking at a 2006 with 68,000 miles on it for about 20k
@@HB-tf5mv how many owners?
@@HB-tf5mv I did all preventative maintenance at 100k. I've had to do bushings all around, routine maintenance ( plugs coils fluid flushes brakes ). Pcv Valves, fuel injectors
@@TheG60528XiJinPing lol that’s another scary part, 5 !!
That's my two cents
Edit: also avoid first model year!
I own a e60 m5 with 115k no problems so far but I still have some money set aside just Incase. This car is worth every penny
Friend of mine here in Dallas has one. It prob has 120,000 miles on it. He is the only owner. It's had it's issues. Motor has been rebuilt, but now it's a 5.5 Stroker motor!
What u don't like about this car?)
- hydraulic unit (6500$)
- hydraulic pump (1500)
- rod bearings (3000$)
- vanos pump
- throttle actuators (1200)
- clutch, flywheel (2000$)
But other than that it's a great car))
Having a car from 75k miles up to 115 had to remove tranny back and forward 8 times) each time it's 800$ labor
Thank you so much for the videos. Planning to see one tomorrow and your video really help me what to look for
I had my S85 replaced @ 46K, # 8 cylinder issue, 30k under warranty, thank goodness.
I really don't understand why people screaming about 120.000 miles..It's normal miles if the car is From 2005 and people drive it.If you don't earn money don't Buy it. Then Buy something else . Those cars need love and maintenance.
It's simple
He must have a ton of money to maintain the best ticking timebomb ever made.

Danny mine has 130,000 miles and just did rod bearings at 120,000 hasn’t had any issues. Not nearly as unreliable as people make them seam.
@@claycrawford9009 how much is rod bearings?
KingKai’s Reviews mine at a local shop was about $1,000 in labor and I bought my own bearings and brought it to them, so about $2,300-2,400 all in
If you are a DIY'er like me, it is worth it. Headaches are par for the course with any exotic race car. Mine got 94k miles 2008, white on white. Enjoy!
Been waiting on this vid from Alex! Yes! Thanx Eddiex
E39 and E60 M5s are one of the best cars ever made. I don’t even care if they aren’t reliable. They are from BMW’s prime time of engineering!
So Clean for a high mileage car!
Since when is 120K high mileage?
@@Gaming4Ohio what's a high mileage BMW m5 to u then???

If you swap out the clutch after market the gear shifting becomes way more smoother
I love this freaking car! I hear a lot of bad things though.
It's amazing. And honestly Alex is very knowledgable about it and it sounded like his experience hasn't been horrible
I want so bad. Something about a v10 in a sedan. Plus I love this body more then the ones that proceeded it.
Terrible car reliability wise
Almost everybody can afford this car but not longer than a few years
This era of the M5 is the most good looking in my opinion. I want one so bad!
Very nice and clean E60 M5. Thats the way BMW should have made the hood
I’m the second owner of my 2010 e60 m5. Bought it with 23k miles on it. Replaced the smg clutch and pump at 89k. For the price of those repairs, I could have built a swapped 2jz e30. Now I want a GTR
Doug Demuro made a video on exactly why you cannot buy one of these unless you have deep pockets for repairs...
itsmillertime1999 everything he talked about were well documented failures in the car...

Guarantee the belt is cleaned by now. Buy manual only!
Why manual if i like automatic more?
@Jalen Bell not as fun though. Manual more engaging.
don't do the agency power headers. i have them. and i prefer the stock sound. catless headers dont make the car any louder, just less refined. im actually thinking about putting the stock ones back on

Mould on the seat belts :) Must be stored in a damp garage!
Oh that's what it is - I have kids so I assumed it was food stains! LOL.
Bahahaha

One car close to the m5 people forget is the e60 550i with m sport package and staggered wheels. Its awesome and as fast with its 4.8 v8. I own one, its been really really reliable. I bought it with 100k and I have 147k so far. Those run flats have been pain in the ass. Those wheels are easily damaged by pot holes and replacing them is expensive. Does it have lsd?

I've had my '07 for 7 years now, with 114,000 miles, and my total problems have been a sunroof motor and plugs. Wow ! Really $$$$.
Owning an e60 M5 the smg , rod bearings , vanos , throttle actuators , coil drivers are a ticking time bomb ... and if it got wrecked ..... no no no I’m still getting one though
Forget about the high mileage. You had the stones to get the white/light gray interior ... my hat is off

Just nice to hear from the owner its not all e60 m5's have big issues.
George Kosti I just got rid of mine at 98k miles as the transmissions started to slip!
this guy has great taste in cars
The sound is amazing. If your keeping it another 50k +, may as well with the headers. What else are you going to do with them?
That’s a good point!
It's funny because it's not the first time an m5 had issues while getting reviewed
More fun than my e39- if you fix the rod bearings and any DSG issues.
The e39 M5 is amazing tho...
“As soon as I wreck it nothing works!! “ lol isn’t that how it usually goes?? 😭
It looks really nice in that color
One of the most beautiful BMWs ever
I am taking my older brother's 2008 BMW 535i and when I get this car, I will turn it in to an M5 and to do it, I am getting an M5 parts car that is the same color as his BMW 535i
I did the E90 M3 for a while, over my 2 years spent 8.5k on a combination of preventive and needed repairs. I didn't even do the throttle actuators. My all in total cost per month was over 1k per month on a 27k car lol.
I was trying to decide between a live grenade and a E60 M5
It turns out that the grenade is much safer
It's the same picture
everybody thinks the bmw following is because of how well built the cars are but really its just a contest of who can own the most unreliable car, and this car is the holy grail to these people
The real G here is Eddie, i wouldn't even sit on the driver seat of this car let alone drive it 😨
If u want a nice car that's really reliable, get a Lexus, Japanese take pride in their work, not too many of those car have issues

@Stitch i know, but still. get a cloth.
120k miles is not bad i sold mines at 178k when smg pump was going out again but never had to do rod bearing
