    Thank you, 14yrs with my ‘08 and has been one of the most reliable performance cars I’ve owned. Most the issues with this car and reputation are from the BMW service interval of 15,000 miles between oil service. This was when BMW paid for service under warranty including wear and tear items plus oil changes hence the long oil change intervals. You also had many that never followed correct warm up procedure. My ‘08 all fluids changed annually and with oil changed more frequently but no more than 3k miles. It is sad to see the abuse that many of these cars went through and then the complaints that followed after the abuse.

    A friend has a 2007 M5 S85 SMG with 360'000km or 230'000 miles and the first rodbearings - the car was always super well maintained.
    We recently changed the rodbearings and mainbearings (they are mostly shot after 100k miles, too) and everything was like new.
    Truly amazing how good these cars function, when used and maintained properly.
    Proper usage: Only long distances, nothing under 50km/30mls.
    Maintenance: 5w50 every 6-8tkm or 150h (10w60 only for track usage and or hot climates, in Germany 5w50 is perfect)

Almost 6 years daily driving the 530 only issue has been steering angle sensor, gave it a clean and she's sweet. Oh and I have the same clunk noise in the back and sunroof issue. Nothing major. Your comments on ‘reliability issues’ is spot on…most comes down to poor servicing (cheap parts, incorrect oil spec, long schedules) but mostly just abuse… not allowing the engine and specifically the oil temp to get up to full operating temperature before driving hard and red lining is the main reason for rod bearing issues on most high reving cars (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari etc)
    People think they can treat, beat and generally abuse high reving, high output engines like grandma’s 4 pot. Theres a cost to ownership most either don’t know or accept.
    RUclips makes it worse as everyone think’s bouncing of the rev limit when cold at Cars & Coffee and doing long burn outs is the norm and correct way to own your car 🤦‍♂️
    My E60 & F10 M5’s did massive mileage with out issue but I know how to be mechanically sympathetic and service correctly

    Completely agree! Absolutely love mine! Most people who bash on this car have never owned one they just jump on the bandwagon. If you warm the car up properly before thrashing it, change the oil between 7 to 10k you should be fine. Put aside maybe £3 to £4k for preventative maintenance on rod bearings, actuators and Vanos and you should have a joy owning it. Yes newer cars are faster but that's not the point. A tesla would munch most modern day supercars to 60mph that doesn't mean it's a better car. Nothing can match a V10. Great video 👏🏽

  • @groupb5420
    @groupb5420 3 года назад +18

    I’ve owned one now for nearly 4 years (late 2007 LCI update ) , I’ve had the throttle actuators changed for upgraded ones including the circuit boards ( this a must because they will fail ) , oil cooler and that’s about it , it’s been fantastic to own as a weekend toy and I cannot see myself selling the vehicle it’s just to much fun and the sound is sublime with the switchable exhaust which sounds like a Lamborghini , I’m at 90,000 miles and have had the oil analysis checks every couple of years which have come back fine with no wear and tear atm , upgrades = carbon fibre air intakes from evolve and the switchable back box delete which is a must , it also has full BMW service history which is what I searched for when I was looking for one of these cars. This is a future classic for sure and prices are on the rise.
    PS; remember always warm the engine and gearbox to temperature keeping the revs below 3k in the process this is the secret to longevity of this glorious engine and this is why a lot of these cars have failed regarding the rod bearings. 👍🇬🇧😎
    An update on my car , I’ve had the injectors changed recently ( just in case they stay open causing the engine to hydro-lock ) this is another preventative maintenance step which does happen to lots of different makes of car , this happened to guy I know who unfortunately had an M6 V10 which hydro-locked his engine with an estimated bill of 8 to 10k rebuild costs so its a no brainer to spend only £385 on Bosch parts for the job then £240 labour charge to fit 😎👍

      @@Anthony-qh1xv ..if your asking me will it be solid if you have the rod bearings done of course but this depends if the car you purchase has been looked after in the first place by that I mean a full specialist or BMW documented history ….this is a must , avoid the cheap cars that were serviced at Dodgy Daves back street garage for a bullseye using cheap Chinese parts if you know what I mean , I would never purchase one of these cars with missing history either , as long as it’s been maintained I don’t think high mileage is a problem either ( German engineering ) , I don’t advise this car as a daily runner it’s a weekend toy tbh , another point to make is what oil I use which is 10W-60 as recommended by the M mechanic I use ( this is also backed up by previous Mechanic’s that have worked on these cars since they were launched plus BMW themselves ) , their great cars with a few downsides one being driving the car in full auto which is not recommended plus driving through towns and city’s is pointless in one of these no matter what mode your in , it’s made for the open roads this is when the SMG comes to life. 👍🇬🇧

I have been Youtubing E60 M5 videos for the last week as I have been offered a 2005 by and old mate in his late 70's who cannot drive it anymore that he bought in 09 and he wants it to go to me at a fair price.. A NSW car always garaged 127k's full service history. Nice condition just needs a good detail and a few scuff marks repaired. BUT being and old rev head he has done some modes and made it a sleeper! Full Hieseman suspension kit, Toned downed exhaust, installed Supercharger by ESS Tuning Melbourne and badge it an 530i badge on the boot. I own a 2010 M6 (build date June 2010 / need of production July 2010) and you need to change the con rod bearings at 70K miles or you will spin a bearing at some point. It is not "if" but rather "when". They are just too narrow for 12:1 compression and an 8,250 redline. Plus the clearances are likely too tight to allow for good oiling when cool. But this problem can be mitigated if you get the car up to full oil temp before taking it over 4K rpm. There is normally a lot more wear on the top 1/2 of the con rod shell which is from the power stroke pushing down on the piston and then the crank pushing the piston back up. The wear on the bottom 1/2 of the shell is much less and likely due to the oiling challenges. I went with BE bearings and ARP studs for the con rod service. I now daily drive the car flat out without fear.

      Truly amazing how good these cars function, when used and maintained properly.
      Proper usage: Only long distances and regular driving, nothing under 50km/30mls.

I’m curious to see what route will you take, it would be cool if someone does it using only oem ecu-s.

      @@Shari_Tejp Im going to try with cantcu. I know that will absolutely control the DCT and work. However my only concern is how the factory DME reacts to the blip request from the cantcu.

      @@ZeroTo60Tube i have heard HTG is not that good anymore their customer service sucks and their main developer left. So i hope CANtcu will workout, yeah throttle blips are a must. Can’t wait for the project to start!

    If you can afford to destroy your tires like that at $1600/set U.S. bearings, etc, should be no problem. Even if you drive normally, you will only get 20-23k miles on a set of Pilot Sports.
    I am the original owner of a 2007, M6, e64. 67k miles. The biggest problem was a faulty voltage regulator that the dealer couldn't diagnose and replaced parts and sensors chasing faults. At $8500, I called BS and told him what was wrong.

    I've own a 2008 BMW E60 M5 and had it for years before selling it. It was the most enjoyable car I have ever had. I never had any issues. Had the maintenance done meticulously. The people that are complaining are the ones who bought the trash M5 and they are paying the price from the previous owner who trash the car. If taken care of this car are one of the best ever made.

    Planning on buying a 2010 s85 with 80k miles any advice for me? Are rod bearings something that need to be done asap? Apparently the last owner had it for 6 years.
    Car has no engine faults supposedly

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  2 года назад +1

      The only thing you can really look for other than current obvious faults are a good indication that its been serviced. The killer of the bearings is prolonged oil service intervals, so if you can find one that has been serviced more often than it should have been that is a great start. Once its yours do the oil regulalrly. If you are driving it hard for a track day or something, change it straight away. Just be aware of what you are putting the oil through. Get to know the motor, pay attention to what it sounds like how it feels through the RPM range and you will likely pick up any annomolys before they become expensive issue. Most importantly, enjoy the amaizng machine that it is.

    Hi there always love watching your videos. Just wondering if you know anything about the e60 540i v8 it’s very smoky when I take off from the lights then clear away when driving. Could it be valve steam seals.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 года назад +1

      It will likely be valve stems seals, however look in to pcv first. Had one of the n62 motors a few years ago.
      If pcv doesn’t fix it switch to a thicker oil. 😉
