In less than three minutes, you helped me restore a 30-year old pair of stainless steel scissors made for cutting fabric that I did not want to just throw away. THANK YOU!
@@charley408 I’ve got a 70 year old pair of dull scissors ✂️ lol 😂 & just couldn’t bare to throw them out (they were my Grandad 👴🏻 😁) but they won’t be dull anymore 😁
@@charley408 Things happen. I have 12 pairs of scissors in my drawer. I'm at home Depot one day. I go past the scissors, and there in front of me, is a beautiful 3 pack. I can't just leave them there. Over and over. That's why I have 12 pairs. Lol
The diagrams took the mystery out of sharpening my scissors. It's kinda difficult to complete a task without really understanding what, exactly, we are going for. I've watched a dozen of these at least, and yours taught me the absolute most. Thank you, and cheers!!
First, I would like to give you the hugest Thank you.🎉 I have been watching so many different “how to” videos on sharpening scissors, shears and knives, and for years, let me tell you, instead of sharpening them, I have destroyed more scissors than you can imagine from watching those videos… No one else has explained how it actually works and watching your video, you in a matter of minutes has led me to be able to fix every pair of scissors in my house. Thank you so much for your great descriptions, I just couldn’t thank you enough!
I keep buying new sewing scissors on average once a year and I recently cut into a pin with the newest best pair. So, more out of frustration than anything, I searched RUclips on sharpening sewing scissors. YOU ARE THE BEST! Hands down! Thank You so much for making this video. (And by the way, I already have one of those knife sharpening rods in the knife drawer)
I gave 7 pairs of scissors (fabric, paper and kitchen) to a fellow who told me he sharpened scissors. They came back worse than they'd ever been. I was so frustrated. It would seem he used an angle grinder, but that seems way OTT for me! I'm going to do this myself, following your method. It can't be rocket science, after all!
Thank you so much!!!! I'm sewing for over 20 years and I never knew how to sharpen my scissors, especially when I ran into a metal pin and made a dent. You don't even need the tool. Once you explained the angles, I took a knife and used the upper surface, then rubbed two metals together. I just sharpened all of my scissors, no matter shape and size! I was about to pay for it next time when I will take my Singer machine to a repair shop! I will try it on one of the Serger machine knives, that is also in a bad shape as my scissors! The angle looks similar!
If you don’t have (and don’t want to buy) a steel (like I don’t) you can just use the rough unglazed base of a ceramic mug. Ideally one with a good grippy handle. That’s how I sharpen my knives so I’m hoping it will work on my scissors as well.
Hey John your method of sharpening scissors is awesome. I had these dull old crummy scissors and followed your instructions and like magic my scissors were cutting again!!! Thanks!!!!
I watched three videos before this one. All of them were 10+ minutes and included specialized tools. I finally found a quick and simple explanation on how to fix my scissors with a knife sharpener. Thank you!
Omg!!!! This actually worked!! I've tried several other methods on the 6 pairs of scissors I own and none have gotten even close to these results!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you for a great lesson in sharpening scissors. I have 2 good pair (Henckels) in a set- one larger and one smaller that I've had over 40 years. The larger pair I use for cutting out fabric for sewing and they had lost their edge toward the scissor tips. So I would end up using the smaller scissors to do that same job which meant it took longer but it worked. However I wanted to have the use of my larger pair again and you have shown me how to do it! I am happy to report my scissors are working well once again.
Omg. I have tried so many things. Cutting sandpaper, using different stones, other stuff on RUclips. And this one actually worked and took about 3 seconds. Thank you so much!!!!!!’
I've had a steel in my knife block for literally decades and it never occurred to me to use them on scissors! Thank you for making this video :) (And Suki is adorable!)
Thanks much. The Why and then the How made/make all the difference. I took a honing rod to them before your video to no avail. After watching the details you provide I went again to complete success. You saved stainless steel scissors from the trash can.
I have been using a steel to sharpen knives for more than 60 years. This is an idea that is so good l am embarrassed to have thought of it myself. Well done good sir and thanks!
This video was amazing! I already had the steel in my knife kit. After watching your video, I understood the way scissors work, & was able sharpen several of my scissors in no time at all. Thank you SO much!
This was amazingly and simply explained, I had used rod before but I pulled it from both sides just like knife, but this video explained it nicely that you should only do it from 1 side, no wonder my scissors didnt seem to get sharp!
When he brought up the 20 or so old cheap scissors, I almost spit out my coffee. I went to Amazon and purchased a sharpener. Much to my surprise, I have been able to sharpen the old, crappy, and cheap scissors that we have. THANKS!!
Wow. Such a great and informative video. I love how you got strait to the point and quickly but helpfully explained how the scissors work. Honestly, the big and popular craft channels are lame, they don’t talk, they have highly annoying music and I just think you definitely deserve more. Anywho, thanks for the awesome vid. U gained a sub 😊
I don't get it. What did he do with the steel ? He said find the angles, but we never saw the angles? All I saw was a very nice guy make sense out of some drawings and then run some metal in to some other metal in a straight line. What angles were possibly in play there?
What an excellent video… who knew it was that simple to sharpen scissors!! Thanks s much for sharing this information with us!! Much love, Nat. (Brisbane, Australia) ♥️♥️🇦🇺
Thank you so very much! I bought a new scissor for cutting fabric not too long ago and it was dull already, I was upset that I would probably need to buy a new one. Your video was exactly what i needed and its super sharp again! thank you again for such an awesome video
Great video. I use this technique all the time. One mod though... you don't have to use a sharpening steel, any steel item works. I have used a large bolt and the back of a razor. They both worked as they both straighten up the burr.
Very good illustration and demonstration, Just would like to add the pivot should be snug. Scissors can be sharp but if they are not snug at the pivot, they still won’t cut.
This is really well explained and also good demonstrated. Out of a few videos I watched I found this one the most helpful since you showed a good technique and everything. Thank you!
Video took 2+ minutes, the execution of the acquired knowledge took 1minute to sharpen my kitchen scissors with the sharpening steel already hanging there...(earlier I had tried to hone just like knives to worsen the poor cutting of the scissors).. thanks a ton
Fantastic tutorial! I have literally buckets full of scissors I've blunt with craft projects, Youve just saved me hundreds a year I swear! (Also amazing cat
Thank you, simple and worked like a charm. I’ve been using honing instruments for years on knives but for some strange reason I never bother using them on my scissors.
Thanks so much for breaking it down and explaining what's going on and why we're doing what we're doing, the diagrams were SUPER helpful. Great video, thank you sir!
Thank you for this! I bought a cheap pair of embroidery scissors on amazon (There were oil slick colored and have kitty instead of bird, i couldn't resist!!) And they only cut if you put the thread further down the blade, not right at the tip where I want to snip. I'm going to try this to see if it fixes them!!
I was trying with the same sharpener today going back and forth and nothing. Then I tried the downward swipes from your video and yay it worked. Thanks so much.
Great video. Great technique. I am surprised to see all these other complex methods when yours is so simple and so effective. I use your method all the time now. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much! Sharpened six pairs of scissors in about a minute and now they cut! One thing to clarify: Th video angle you have of steel to scissor blade looks like 90º. I assume it's something closer to following the angle of interior edge, right? Anyway, that worked for me.
dude thankyou ! I was pissed with my blunt scissor, really want to throw it away. then I follow your method but using whetstone/sharpening stone. scissors work again and I can flex it to my family lmao
The diagram was helpful, but a close up of what you're doing would have been best. I'm not exactly sure which part of the blade you are running across... The beveled side or the flat side?
This is awesome, I need to borrow a steel (or buy one) and sharpen my scissors! I always thought it would be hard. But it looks easy enough. Thank you!
Great video. Easily the simplest method. I checked on Amazon and they have the thing but in 10" instead of 12" for $1 dollar less. I am not putting a link since you can just click on the 10" on. For me, I'll hang it somewhere but the extra 2" saved in a small living space helps. THANKS!
Very helpful and I would have liked a third drawing of the cross section of the scissors as the steel was being applied…. The first two drawing helped us visualize the situation, a third image would help to visualize the solution. I’m not sure if the steel was being applied to the flat edge or the angled edge where the two edges meet at the rounded corner. Otherwise though great little video that solves a universal problem! Well done!!
I asked my Dad to sharpen some scissors (garage full of tools, was a carpenter) somehow he's managed to destroy them. tightened to the point of finger pain when trying to use them and more blunt than when he started. 3 times he attempted it, no idea what he was doing in his man cave other than eating chocolate biscuits with nooone looking. I will attempt to resurrect them all with your simple method. thank you 👴🤞
This was the best learning to time ratio ive ever experienced. I feel so accomplished thank you
In less than three minutes, you helped me restore a 30-year old pair of stainless steel scissors made for cutting fabric that I did not want to just throw away. THANK YOU!
That's so wonderful to hear!
Just confused as to why he would have 20 0air of dull scissors in a drawer

I’m going to be 63 years old in a couple of weeks. You just taught an old dog a ( valuable) new trick. Amazing ! So easy.
Happy celebrations 🎉👍

The diagrams you made of sharp versus dull scissors was super helpful, thank you Epbot!

Thank you so much. I have no need to replace my favourite lefthanded scissors now.
Tina.

Very simple and correct way to sharpen a pair of scissor 👍👍👍
Super helpful! Thank you for the demonstration and for explaining the process!
Nice RUclips. Short, clear, useful. The pics definitely helped.
Works well! My sewing life is much easier now! Thanks!
Thanks for the fast explanation!
This was extremely helpful! I tried this myself and it worked perfectly 👍

What?? It's actually that easy? Who knew? Big thanks! BTW, you have a great voice for videos.

Thank you! Have both a steel and blunt ✂️ ✂️ Love the fluff ball!
Thank you so much for explaining how it actually works, thank you!
Worked like a BOSS!!! Thanks! Even worked great on scissors I trim my beard with.
Thank you for the tips. And for showing us the cat! Beautiful. Do you think this would work on manual sheep shears, too?

Quick and to-the-point without waffle - thanks! Question - flat file? or the 'steel' you used?
Thank you! Your explanation was so easy to follow 👏😀
I’ve got two pairs (red) I bought in Woollies just before they pulled out of the South. Never had them sharpened . Might give it a try.
Oh hey! The really old and expensive sewing scissors I bought work like new again! Thanks!
A fantastic quick to the point helpful video, thanks very much.
this actually so cool! thank you for showing this as my fabric scissors were getting really dull and i didnt know what to do
I didn't know you could do this! I will definitely be trying it.
I love you line. This are now all awesome scissors 😁. Thank you for brilliant tips..
dude thankyou ! I was pissed with my blunt scissor, really want to throw it away. then I follow your method but using whetstone/sharpening stone. scissors work again and I can flex it to my family lmao
Yup 👍 that works! Took longer to find the knife steel than to sharpen the scissors ✂️ now I can make some more 😷
Thanks! You saved me $$ from another set of scissors.
Thanks again Epbot, that did it, now I want to tell everyone.
Yay! Glad it helped!
The diagram was helpful, but a close up of what you're doing would have been best. I'm not exactly sure which part of the blade you are running across... The beveled side or the flat side?

A joy to do, Thank you, I will never have a dull pair of scissors again.
This is awesome, I need to borrow a steel (or buy one) and sharpen my scissors! I always thought it would be hard. But it looks easy enough. Thank you!
just found this, worked great!!
Best video for sharpening your scissors, really did mine as new👊 thx

Just assuming that the tool you used is readily available in stores??
Do you draw the tool across the flat side of scissor or just the top of the scissor blade.
I'm a baker and I saw your T-shirt and I love it. I want to know where you got it.
Very helpful and I would have liked a third drawing of the cross section of the scissors as the steel was being applied…. Excellent job, done within 3 minutes🎉🎉🎉
How do you get them oiled properly so they don’t get super tight and hard to open?
