My grandfather used to make something like this. It was called Long Cabbage (learned from a Polish co-worker at the steel plant where he worked). The only difference, the cabbage was shredded in long strands and it was finished with Vinegar. Thanks for reminding me of my Papa :)
My Polish grandpa Past when I was a baby I would have loved to seen him in the kitchen cooking up my grandma made a lot of sweets but now I'm very Polish. wanna cook this Up THANK YOU for sharing.
👍👍 Laurie Miller…. Do you remember how much vinegar he used?? This recipe reminds me of how my grandmother made it except I’m almost positive she used vinegar in hers also. I’m going to try & make it. If you don’t remember how much vinegar, maybe someone else will. Otherwise I guess I’ll just figure it out through tasting & trial & error. 🫤
@@kath0000 It’s best when you use young cabbage… taste much sweeter and tender . How much vinegar is determined by your taste buds. Also, in polish version, we use little sugar, so the cabbage is sweet and sour in the same time .The Polish name is… Kapusta na Krótko or Kapusta słodko Kwaśna .
My mom always made this… sometimes with bacon but sometimes used sausage, pork chops or even chicken…. And the best part of this was to make tacos out of it… we would put it in flour tortillas and they’re so good.
Asian style: add ginger, pepper, onions, garlic to the grease, hot peppers for heat. Then add soy sauce and sesame oil to the fried cabbage with the bacon. Serve with rice.
@@mlb556 interesting. I thought it was a German thing. I've never seen any of my elder relatives add sweet fruit to vegetables. Vinegar, fresh peppers, fat back even okra (my fav) but no cranberries.
I like my cabbage saute simply in a few drizzles of olive oil until the cabbage is translucent, then I add a pinch of salt and a few dashes of black pepper. Yummy.
I make what I call fried cabbage stew. The main ingredient is of course cabbage, but also includes ground beef, onions, cubed potatoes, after cooked a little, fresh thyme, couple tablespoons of tomato paste and enough beef broth for about 1/2" on bottom of pan and finish cooking. The combination of broth and tomato paste loosens up that caramelization on the bottom of the pan while also making a stew like broth just enough to coat.
I've been doing that exact recipe for 50 yrs. When I cook it I also cook pintos & pair it with a beautiful tender chuck roast with gravy omg w yeast rolls & homemade honey butter.
I made cabbage and onion fried in a pan with oil. Then added in already made elbow noodles to the onions and cabbage. You can add butter, salt and pepper for flavor. This is a dish served in my family you may like.
I absolutely adore cabbage so I'll definitely have a go at making this it looks absolutely delicious and you are so right in saying that bacon makes everything taste better and thank you so much for sharing this lot's of love from Carol in Nottingham UK xx ❤
The cabbage cooks faster if it is slightly steamed first. My Ukrainian Baba added the leftover cabbage from Halupki into the pan with onions then tossed with cooked egg noodles and pepper. The recipe is called Halushki a peasant dish.
We love fried cabbage noodles (shredded cabbage) that's been cooked with Italian Sausage, onions, fennel & a few other spices. Its actually a Paleo recipe, so good for the body!!!
Im trying this ..im obsessed with cabbage lately been eating it as a salad with sauted mushrooms bacon creamy italian n crispy onions omg its so good n just feels healthy..
i’m seeing all these really simple yummy side dishes and meals. And I can’t help wonder to myself why the heck was the staff not introduced to me as a child? I grew up on cans and boxes.
This looks so good. I love the idea of a basic dish that can have dozens of variations. Especially if the ingredients are healthy and inexpensive. It helps to stretch the food dollar and eat less processed food.
Chop up cabbage, put in water. Add salt pepper and onion. When still cr I nchy, put in frying pan seasoned some. Cut up Kiabalsa n stir fryer to your liking
I make this a lot. I also add a little vinegar and a touch of sugar. It's not a side - It's a whole meal for me. Usually eat it with rice.
Very low carb don’t add sugar or starch
I’d replace the vinegar and sugar with a good splash of Noilly Prat to deglaze the pan. Happy cooking 🥰
What’s Noully Prat? Something like sherry or honey ? Or spice ?
I love stir fried cabbage n chicken n rice. Add on tofu skin pieces for more crunch
Especially if you add some more meat to it 😉
@@alta2732 it’s a French dry Vermouth, the 2nd ingredient in a dry Vodka or Gin Martini. It’s used in professional kitchens as well. Cheers.

Yum! Sounds fun with the long strands! 💃🏻
Aw, I'm glad this recipe brings back some nostalgic memories ❤️

That sounds damn good
That's how I eat it too!
Man that sounds so damn good I have got to do this
Sounds really good
Sounds yummy. I am Slovak and the Slovaks don't put mustard in. This is more Hungarian style. Then they put sour cream on top
in Ireland we call it cabbage and dressed cabbage if it has bacon and bacon fat in it, we would melt a knob of butter into it at the end though
A touch of black pepper makes flavour comes out and taste good.🙏🏽😘😽🍹
my favorite uses red cabbage, bacon, onions, dried or whole fresh cranberries and apple cider vinegar to balance the bacon fat.
Sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing Eileen ❤️

Your version is the version of Southern Plantation slaves long ago.
I've made that with apples but didn't think of cranberries/craisins. What a tasty idea. Thanks!
