- DIY RV Reflooring with a Flush Slide Out - Reflooring our RV!
We have a 2005 DRV Mobiles Suites. It has carpet and linoleum in it from the factory. After traveling 2.5 years, we decided it was time to refloor the rv with something that was more aesthetically pleasing than the aging original flooring. Being DIY RV people, we did it ourselves!
We decided to go with a vinyl plank flooring that looked like wood that we found at Home Depot. It is the Allure brand, and the color was Khaki Oak, which included some mixing of grays and tans. It has a Grip Strip edge, which means there are some ledges on either side with adhesive on them, so when you place the planks side-by-side the adhesive ledges stick to each other and hold each other in place.
We also chose the Vinyl Plank style so that it was going to be flexible for going around the road, not a lot more weight (although it does weigh more overall than the linoleum and carpet we removed), durable (stand up to our dogs’ claws), waterproof, easy to install, and cost effective.
In this video, we show and talk about how we remove rv carpet, remove rv linoleum, repair damaged subfloor with Bondo and install the Allure vinyl plank on our floor, which includes reflooring the flush slide out and deal with the flush slide floor transition.
We were so pleased with how easy it was to work with the Allure vinyl plank. Having install hard-floor in our previous house and having to cut each piece with a saw, the Allure planks were easily scored with a razor blade and bent/broken off.
The Grip Strip design was handy over a click-lock type because unlike click-lock where the flooring has to be at a certain angle to install, the Grip Strip can be slid and pressed down into place. This makes going under a counter or under the edge of a slide very easy.
We had to do some pretty intricate cuts up near the vanity and into the toilet room and closet. While time-consuming and precise, we were able to cut the Allure Vinyl Plank to fit all the tight corners and notches.
One of the biggest concerns that we had was that we have a flush side, and we weren’t sure how we were going to have the slide floor meet the main floor.
Our RV has a black plastic ramp that runs the length of the slide. The slide rides up the ramp and in when it is coming in, then slides out and down to sit pretty level with the main floor. Once we had the carpet out and could examine the situation, we found that there was a strip of plywood that covered a 2 inch gap between the plastic ramp and the slide floor. That plywood was just covered by the carpet and butted up to the foam carpet padding on the slide, so you didn’t really notice it. With the hard floor, we had to figure out a way to bridge this gap and make a smooth transition.
We decided to take one of the vinyl planks and put it over the gap. We did some tests with it and we determined that while it did have a little big of flex when you pushed down on that gap, overall it was pretty rigid and would do the trick. It would allow us to have this clean transition from the slide to the main floor.
Because this is a floating floor, we glued the first edge piece onto the slide floor so that it wouldn’t go anywhere and made sure it came to the point we wanted it to. We used Hard As Nails glue.
The major drawback to this design is that when the slide is pulled in, it leaves a section of the plank hanging out over the edge without any support. We must be very careful when the side is in to not step on the plank because it probably will not hold up.

The new flooring made a world of difference; y'all should be super proud of your work. Thanks for sharing everything; you're da' best!
Appreciate you all being so clear and honest in your in devour.
I am so glad that you went into details about installing the plank flooring on your slide. I am pretty handy with installing flooring and I have been searching the internet for a few years to see how re-flowing a slide would work. thanks for getting down to the nitty-gritty on this issue.
This video is an amazing resource! So, so, so helpful. Thank-you for making this video! The lip transition was a big question for me when considering how to replace the carpet in my own 5th wheel. This video gives me hope that it can be done!
Thanks for your 6 yr old video; others may have mentioned this, but in regards to your screw scratch on the freshly installed flooring, and judging from the camera angle perspective, it actually looked like a typical flooring joint because of it's short straight run. In any case, it most likely faded out after you worked in some vinyl putty or touch-up marker paint. Great video and tips, thanks for sharing!
❤❤❤ I just wanted to say thank you to you both. Quite honestly your videos have given me the confidence to take care of some of the things I had to do. I went ahead and got the composting toilet installed myself. Thanks to you I was able to do that. I was also able to fix my gray water tank- that scared me horrendously. Now I'm officially scared because I have to reframe my rear wall. I'm going to try and Salvage my floor. But it looks like it might have to come out. I did contact a leading technician from Thompson's RV and they told me that it's time to consider a new floor. So I'm watching your video and I'm biting my fingernails because I'm scared to do this, but I am going to attempt this. I just want to say thank you once again because your videos are giving me the confidence to make it through this and not pay millions of dollars on an older RV
Hey all. We did exactly the same remodel, the same way with the slides. Our slide edges have been solid, and even overhang just a bit to cover the original metal strip. We use 1/2 cut small pool noodles to buffer the slide bottoms when we bring them in. Works really well. We have four 8 to 10” pieces on the main slide, and two for the smaller slide. Just put them in perpendicular with the slide and they’ll take the weight and still slide. Your project looks great! Nice work, and kudos on the timeline. That’s pretty aggressive! We also did the WeBoost installation (4G RV). That was fun too.
Did you guys have issues with the flooring separating a little bit? I have the exact same trailer and did the exact same floor this guys did. Unfortunately for some reason the planks like to come apart a bit even though we did the temperature acclimation and everything. Also my black part of the slide isn't straight? Haha
Great work! What a difference the new look makes.
So helpful! I'm planning a reflooring effort after I have a shop sort out our spongy subfloor (a whole other story), and this has answered just about all my questions.
I put the same floor in my bathroom 7 years ago. I love it very durable floor. I’m in the process of building a Skoolie now and will be using it in the bus. Look great in your RV!
Excellent presentation! I often get bored by videos like this because of slow talking and long pauses. Your discussion was informative, fluid and easy to listen to. Good job!
nice
Eric Ball yeah and the tits and ass shots definitely helped👀👀✅
Beautiful! Nice rv, too! You have inspired me to plan to tackle our '98 Damon Daybreak... Thank you so very much, Mortons🤗
Great video, your explanations were extremely concise and exact. I will be doing this pretty soon and I very much appreciate you.
Than kyou so much for this great video. We are redoing our travel trailer and this gives us an idea what to do. Today we took out the built in couch and bench seats and table. Next the carpet. This vinyl plank flooring looks very doable and not to hard.
Very impressive job! A VAST improvement.
Great job! Love how detailed you guys are! Beautiful floor. Good video.
i think the old pup thinks you are the best and he's very happy to live in the nice clean RV To.. great job i did a 1990 allegro several yr's ago its very satisfying when your done great job kid's.. im glad you showed a lot of detail on that slide i have a 5th wheel with a gap now i understand why thank you & happy trails to you great job
Thanks very much for the video. I am going to tackle this project myself very soon and you really helped me with what to do! Great job on the floor too
Love it! I wanted to see how this worked in an RV. Thank you for sharing!
Flooring is very nice modern. Brings the unit up to date. Two things as side tips. One side cutters work way better for them staples. I have had to pull my fair share of staples out of rv carpeting lol. Not my favorite job. Second I saw some water damage at the front of the flush slide when the carpet was up. You might want to look into that at the front of the side, and that might have been the culprit to the rear as well. I have seen that a lot to. Smart idea sealing the floor edge before reinstalling the trim. You might want to thing it over and seal the trim edges in the bath, kitchen, and by the entry door to help protect them from water if their is a major spill, leak, or raining out side. I did this with my camper when we replaced the flooring because I figured it would be my luck something would happen. Lol happy camping, and safe travels.
Top notch video for a unique situation - Your information and advice is priceless (thanks for sharing!)
that looks a Ton better. Good choice in color..Well done!!!
Kaitlyn's got it going on! I love that camper. Im about to do mine soon! LEt the fun begin!
Great video. Helped push me over the hump with redoing my floors. Time for the next project!
Great Video!! Thanks for taking the time to make it. This was just the perfect info we have been looking for. Nice job!
I want to replace the flooring in my RV home, and I can't thank you enough for posting the information you did here. I'm going to have the same issues you have. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Do yourself a favor use a grinder on the staples
Love the soundtrack
excellent explanation....We will definitely invest in the grip strip. thank you for posting.
Oh God, been there, done that! The staples were problematic but not impossible to remove during the reflooring of my 2004 Holiday Rambler Savoy. I went with 24” square carpet tiles by Mohawk and glued every one of them down. We did the slide-out as well and when extended, the tiles blend in together with almost no gap. And, we can walk on it with the slide out retracted. I was worried about the extra weight as well but doesn’t seem to be a problem. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
We pulled carpet out of the Townhouse. It was quite a job. Staples galore! Like that you used vinyl planks. I’ll do the same in my Class C.
The new flooring is lovely, well done!
I love it. I did everything but my slide-out. I will tackle that next. Thank you very much for the great video.
Very nice job ! That's a lot of hard work right there.
Looks wonderful. And yes that wood market would cover that scratch so easy .
Looks great guys! Would definitely want to make that upgrade as well if we ever got a used rig with carpet. Thanks for sharing all the tricks and tips! - Shane
The flooring looks great.
very impressive! Looks like a worthwhile project, something I would also want to do in a rig; but I'm not sure I would have the patience to do it. Good job Tom, but wow Cait did an amazing job in all the hard parts! well done!
I'm a flooring guy with 20 years in the biz. Normally I cringe when I watch a DIY install. But you guys did a fantastic job. Kudos. Btw - you can replace the damaged plank relatively easily.
We have the same flooring in our home. We had a screw from the plywood underneath come up and create a hill on one piece. We called allure and they said to take a sharp knife and cut the whole piece of plank out and then cut the glue ends off a new piece and put some tough as nail glue on the plywood and lay the piece of plank on it. Worked like a charm.
lwood8 I bet it did. I was going to suggest that along with using a hair dryer to heat the adhesive getting it to release and make it possible to pull up the damaged plank(s).
It looks nice. The lip of the exposed plank when the slide is in: make a strip of wood, with short pile carpet wrapped around it, to fit under and support the edge when the slide is in, put it in place when the slide is brought in.
Love the floor, and tips. Great job
Epic difference and much healthier than carpet!
You guys crushed it.. professional result.
It looks great! You guys did an awesome job!
I do this sort of thing for a living, and you guys did SOOOOOOOO many things well on your project. You even nailed the radius around the shower and toilet! Thumbs up from me! :)
The best tool for removing flooring staples is side cutters. You just clamp on the staple and pivot the cutters like a lever to pull them out. It will save you hours.
Great job. Thanks so much for taking the time to discuss the issues you ran into... I'm planning to do our 5th wheel floor and the slides have me perplexed.... your whole thought process in addressing the issues was excellent. A few ideas for your next project: 1) Glued sheet vinyl... use a heat gun... comes right off 2) Staples... use 2 pairs of vice grips... grab the staple end with one, use the other to leverage, rather than pulling with muscles.... that'll tire you out!
Thank you!
I really like it! Excellent job guys! Thanks for share! 😊
Your floor looks beautiful. Great video.
Awesome job! Doing my 2000 newmar 5th wheel right now. This will help!
Did the same in 2017. Also used Allure Vinyl Plank. The only way to go thin enough for the slides to still go over the top of. You could get another set of those grey slide slickers to put down at the corners of the slides before bringing them in to prevent more scratches.
Well done I appreciate the quality of your video and it looks like you did a thorough job
Excellent video, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to post it. Very helpful and full of important tips!
Just watched the flooring install nice work bummer about the screw scratch try cutting the head of the screw off with a receiptrecating saw with a metal cutting blade 👍👍
Hello, I compliment you on looking at various options to the flooring such as laying down a plank of plywood and so on... Great details you spoke of. I wasn't aware of such a flooring such as stick and glue as you used. All the best!
Well, done, very articulate, I will be reflooring similar this winter in my 38 foot Winnebago. Great tips, will use Home Depot and like their product as I have seen it laid out in other videos. Use a drimmel with extension to grind that screw head. Thank you for the great guidance and great cheer! See you on the road of life.
Great job guys!
Outstanding video! Thank you so much for sharing. We have a quarter million dollar Diesel pusher with 3 slides. Being a retired police officer on a limited income, we opted for a nice pre-owned R.V that was a trade in, and we waited till November when the dealer's price dropped for New inventory. We paid just under 100K for a pristine unit. After 1 year of our dogs traveling and camping with us, the carpet cleaning became more than anyone could stand. To have 140 sq. ft. installed was $1500.00! We are doing the job ourselves, and needless to say, to do the job myself is scary. This video explains enough to where I can do this with confidence.
Lloyd Morrison II That price sounds very reasonable for a floor change out in a diesel pusher depending what all needs to be removed and reinstalled to do it right
Wow. Thanks so much for this video! We're thinking about redoing our floors and have wondered how to address the pop out. Whew. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! :)
When pulling staples after remodeling 3 homes with carpeting, one of the most time-consuming parts of the process that many look over when planning for their projects is all of those staples...I've found that needle nose pliers are best instead of regular pliers. This process takes forever for everyone. To give you an idea, my father and I ripped up 3 rooms of carpeting to which we listened to the Hamilton soundtrack whilst completing.
By the time we finished. Hamilton died 4 times.
Use a grinder
Great video. Very good explanation and things to be careful. This will help in our future projects. Thank you
Very nice, I often wondered just what issues people run into with respect to slides moving in and out when redoing RV flooring. Very informational.
Will do an update once we have some more time on this floor.
Awesome. Thanks for all the tips and hints...
Love the floor awesome job!
Nice job and good video coverage. I might be looking to do this soon.
Wow!!! Amazingly thorough!! Thank you so much for making this very informative video. Your floor is beautiful!!
Thanks, we are still enjoying it!
Wow! this is a great video and very detailed. Awesome! We plan on removing our carpet as well.
Great video! I just subscribed as we are about to do this very change to our fifth wheel. Thank you for the details and best of all for your scratch! Something I had not thought of.
Our RV has really old carpet and linoleum. After watching I decided it’s not worth it for us. Y’all really did a great job! ❤️👍😃 Hopefully we will be in our strawbale home in the next year.
Well documented, good job.
Nice job and great job on the video. Very informative and easy to understand!
It looks really nice. We about to do this on our Diesel Coach. Love the pattern and color of your installation.
Nice job and looks great !
This was one the most well narrated how to videos. Thank you♡
Glad it was helpful!
I just found your channel and subscribed. You are very intelligent and well spoken and did a great job. Your husband seems very smart also and did a great job filming
Thank you for the video we are in a major renovation project just like this.
Looks awesome. Great video!
Thank you for taking the time to do such a informative video.
You're very welcome! :)
It looks so good. What a pair of hardworkers you are.
Thank you so much!
We have the same floor in our old farm house and it holds up very good. We started in just the kitchen and 4or5 years
later we put it in the rest of the rooms and we could just take up the door way floor up and put down the new floor
and it blended in very well so when you get the screw flat you can pull up the old one and put in a new one.
Just wanted to say thanks, replaced floor and used a piece of plexiglas under each side of the slide to protect the new floor after seeing your problem. So glad we did you can see scraping on the plexiglass where the steel plate support under the side.
Great job. Great info. 👍👍
We just bought our 1st trailer trailer After watching you pull up your carpet I am sure glad That we have tile and our trailer
I've had this flooring for a couple of years now and I love it! you're right though unsupported it will chip/break so figure out a way to support it if there is any chance it will be hit or stepped on in an unsupported area. No need to glue it down it doesn't move and i've got it in both large and small areas :D
I’m floored by this video.
Lol!
Great work, and tips
What a great video. I appreciated how you covered issues that you had in depth. Looks awesome! There was a home improvement show that was on for 30 years called Hometime. I really enjoyed their abilities to deliver the how to of very interesting topics. You both are every bit as good, keep it up please.
Have same flat slide in my A I put oriental rug over it because as I walked when slide was in was afraid I would slice my feet on the vinyl plank edge call me a girl but it hurts great job on your floor saved a ton of money and time doing ourselves
Great job.
Well done video, it addressed all of my concerns. Tku!
You did a fantastic job
I think this is one of the best diy videos on RUclips. Siknd job guys. I'm motivated now to do mine
Thank you!
awesome video. I'm planning on doing the same to my new 15 year old trailer and this was so helpful. Extremely well done.
Awesome! Thank you!
Amazing video absolutely perfect you have the exact same layout and slide Is Us we are going to virtually do exactly the same as you guys did thank you so much
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great vid, thanks for sharing.
This is amazing for the simple fact that we have the same RV and I hate the carpet but didn't want to tackle it because of the slide! Still nervous but thinking real hard on this...will take longer for us though. Husband is only home 1 day a week and I'm no longer equipped with the ability of physical work...
Love the new floor...I will find a way!
You may find the article we wrote about this project helpful as well: mortonsonthemove.com/diy-rv-flooring-with-a-flush-slide/
Nice job katlyn looks great. We have a DRV and this is our next project
I'm glad I found this video I have the identical trailer and doing the same thing. Great video y'all.
Awesome! Thank you!
Beautiful, thank you so much for the fabulous video
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
We’ve had Allure flooring in our bathroom for about two years. It still looks brand new. I do remember the directions saying not to caulk or seal the edges as it is a floating floor and could expand and contract even though it’s not wood. Caulking the edges could cause it to bow if it expands too much. We will doing something similar to our fifth wheel soon. It looks great.
It's good to know you're still happy after 2 years. I've wondered not so much how the vinyl holds up but if the planks stay down, don't lift on the corners, bow, etc.
Dinah Rogers we’ve had no issues at all. Still looks brand new.
I love the dog. I wish I could sleep like that!
