Lucky you ran into this guy, he obviously knows what he's doing
He was a very good tech and was very good at explaining the process!
In real estate they say "Location, location, location! With RV's it's "Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! Really good video. Thank you.
Thank you so much! It really is important to take care of your equipment!
Really helpful info! I'm impressed by your willingness to admit when your DIY has not worked out because I'm a DIYer and knowing what NOT to do is almost as important as knowing what to do!
After looking at the issues I had, I was convinced a small adjustment would fix everything! Boy was I wrong, I ended moving the problem from one side of the slide to the other! After talking to him about how I approached it, I now know where I went wrong in my adjustment procedures!
Great video. Completely informative. Love the honest mistakes and not hiding them and making excuses.
We have another one coming out soon where I made a bigger mistake and we make a road trip to have the same tech help us!
awesome video. i learned a lot watching you guys work on the main slide. stay warm and safe travels
Thank you so much for watching!
Such great information! Thank you! I'm really intimidated by how much I have to learn about RVs when the time comes. We are going full time in March or April, so we are absorbing as much information as possible, and it's a LOT!
Thanks for watching! You will pick it up fast it gets really easy after some time!
Awesome that he helped you out. I also have learned a lot watching your videos. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words! We're just trying to show what life really is like traveling full time!
Best video for sildeout repair.. great job 👍. Thank you 🤠
Thanks so much! Our tech was so helpful and great at explaining everything!
Wow... the RV technician was great. Im similar as you, in the sense, I watch & ask questions & help if I can. Great vid
He was an excellent Tech! Asking questions and helping out when you can is the best way to learn!
Very well done video you saved us a lot of money! Thanks so much for sharing
Thank You! I am glad I was able to help you out!
Great information about the needle valves... thanks for sharing
Thanks, we use them all the time when we stop at rest areas or truck stops just to have our living slide out and take up less space in the parking lot!
Nice young man. This park has it all.
Thanks for watching!
Great video guys thanks for showing us how it’s done.
Thanks and you're very welcome!
Great video. My slide has a piece of the slide broke on it and been waiting until I have time to take it in to the shop and have it repaired but I just might try to tackle this one on my own. Thanks
Its easy to do, and you can order the slide ski's off amazon, they are universal and come as a set and you cut them to fit.
Lovely fam. Bro you living the life
Thank you!
Do you feel like you could do the repair yourself next time!? The tech was amazing walking you through all of it!
The slide ski is very easy just take your time and ensure its a good fit. The slide adjustment i now understand where i went wrong when I made my adjustments. He was very good at showing me how just getting one step out of order can lead to a bigger problem.
@@PavingNewPaths I think it’s awesome you are learning how to work on your rig! Safe travels! 🚂🚂
Great info ! U would think that they would cover that pressed plywood on the pull out from the weather..... I got a 36' 2006 Paradise Point built with all aluminum and 3/4 " plywood and I redid floors on all the pullout and this show will help me do the skid sides ..... Thanks great show !!👊😎
Thank you! There is some form of coating on the bottom that came off when I removed the tape and exposed the wood! It looks to be an applied product that just coats the wood!
Man just what I needed. Have water intrusion that ran into the rv via the slide ski.
The job seemed way harder than it actually was once I saw how he did it! That being said he was worth every penny to do the job and show me how to make slide adjustments!
What a great video! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great job, great video!
Thanks for watching!
Found you a good Rv tech 👍 good video!
Yes! He was a very good tech!
Water intrusion can take weird paths sometimes. Our 2020 had such an issue we didn't know about until we were using it at an RV park in heavy rain. We were in Florida; a big day-long storm came through and just by chance we moved the sofa to get something that fell behind it. I stepped onto wet carpet. >=( WHAT?!
Totally unexpected because zero water was coming through the top of the slide, through the corners, or window frame. We dried the carpet. At a later date a short rain came through, and nothing happened. Then a little bit later a big one came through again, and boom the carpet's wet. The water was coming down the one side of the slide where the carpet was wet, and basically wicking off some flexible plastic barrier material and somehow getting into/onto the floor of the slide. The water flowed down before wicking UP to get into the trailer. Surface tension makes water do crazy things.
We never had any water problems with this issue! I was worried that if I did not fix it I would eventually have water intrusion on the exposed surfaces where the slide ski was damaged!
Awesome vid thanks
Thanks for watching!
Awesome great video!
Thanks Thomas! We sure miss yall! Tell Mrs. Beverly Kayla is still toting Ghostie everywhere we go!
Great explanation video! Simplified the adjustment process without completely dumbing it down.
As a former residential handyman, any time the homeowner would offer to help my reply was always, "My helper is cheaper than you!" In other words, just please let me and my helper do the job and you stay out of the way! 🤣😂🤣🤪 RV techs typically don't mind a hand from the owner and explaining things. The definitely have more patience! LOL
Thank you! My attempt at adjusting it was close but i did it in the wrong order. He was a very good tech and did not mind that i filmed the job. I told him i would stay out of the way and lead the conversations and only help if he needed a hand.
That's really cool, because as an RV owner I would want to know how EVERYTHING worked, and I would especially want to learn how to fix everything.
great info thanks for posting
Thank you!
Thanks for the help!
You're welcome!
Watching your videos and others makes me wonder how well RV's are really built. There seems to be a lot of issues with slides and most newer RV's. They really look like they're built terribly.
In this case It was installed incorrectly and probably would have been just fine if I never touched it! However it was coming unglued on the bottom, so my fixing it actually made it crack and break because it was installed improperly! These RV'S nowdays are mass produced by hand so your going to have issues, most are minor. If you don't want issues don't get an RV they all will have a problem if you use them!
Unfortunately the sad fact is pretty much all RVs are built like crap.. doesn't matter if you bought an older used one for $1,000 or brand new one straight from the factory for $150,000, it's built like garbage. It's the only way they can sort of somewhat keep the cost down and keep it lightweight enough that you can actually tow it.
@@mikeschwab1943 We have found this to be true, no matter how much you spend there is going to be problems with an RV! This is why we found the one we loved and bought used and put the savings away for taking care of issues like this!
I'm a 30 year master RV technician and RV owner for over 35 years (around 15 year full time) . RVs are very far from maintenance and repair free doesn't matter brand, price, new used or type. . I wish RV salespeople would tell their customers that. Everyone that owns one needs to know at the very minimum basic repair skills You always have things to repair on one. They have gotten much worse since the pandemic. Stay away from any lightweight or ultralight model or lower priced entry level series. the heavier it is the better its built in general. Stay away from anything with a a Lippert frame (lci) built in the last 8 years or so. Do not make the huge mistake of jumping into full timing with no RV experience. you need at least 3 to 5 years of owning and using a RV recreationaly before going full time to gain experience and learn basic repair skills. Short cuts cause very expensive mistakes.
@@TJ-di1lb hello TJ! I read your comments! You are very right, I’m learning more and more RVs are built like crap! Most anyways! And some people have more luck with them, problem wise! Then others,I’m one of the latter ones! I’ve had leak issues almost every to every other year since 1994, when I first moved in park as a live abroad,, no choice, could not afford otherwise! This now is my second unit: A 2003 komort 5th wheel I got used in 2016, before that was an old contessa trailer my father gave me! Anyways as someone that knows very little on the workings or repair on rvs,, WHAT are rv slide skis? And would they affect slideout leaking at floor level? Right now I’m having leaks floor seeping up water on each side of main slide out in enter coners, last nite I just noticed my bedroom side is doing same which is new! I’m 62 some health issues and limited income! So would you have any ideas on a temp, fix until I can afford to get repaired proper? If you can, please reply here,,,or my email is : bmwman94550us@myyahoo.com thank you very much!Andy! Have a blessed new year!
This is an interesting fix perhaps it will help somebody else out thanks
That's what we hope!
Lol that is 3M VHB. I was just gifted a 90s Gulfstream motorcoach. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! Enjoy your "new to you" motorcoach!
that's better than the manufacturer
Yes, he did a good job of explaining why it broke and then ensured we made the repair correctly! He then walked me though the adjustment process and showed me where I went wrong when attempting to make the adjustments myself!
Great job on the video! Now do the cable slide. ☺️
Ours doesn't have a cable slide, but maybe if we run across someone with one that is having problems, we could!
We had a similar issue on the mid bunk slide. The factory cut the weather barrier short so it wasn't fully engaged in the termination bar. I stapled it in and coated it with silicone. That's going to be a warranty item at the end of the season.
I need to investigate these slide skiis more....
I tried to make this one better little did I know I made it worse! It just wouldn't get bad for several more months!
yes indeed
Yes!
Live and learn this was a good video
Yes, While i fixed one issue I created another!
Love to have that mobile tech here
He was really good! We have some more issues that might need his help this year and are considering going to the Memphis area again just to get his help!
Love this video. Very informative. Love you asked questions on camera and the answers given. That tech was awesome. I started working on my slide as u had the same exact issue with the water, ski and metal strip. Started on it today but the weather changed and I had to stop. Question: Is there something at the hardware stores similar to the skis so as not to have to order them?
I don't think there is something that would work but we got ours from amazon it was cheap and got there in no time.

Great mobilevtech, is he on Florida ?
We were in Memphis Tennessee! It is called Town and Country Mobile RV Service!
Great info, try and do a follow up video.
Thanks for watching! It has been 3 months and we have had no more issues with our slide!
Great video, getting ready to do a second repair on this slide as the first one cracked as well, any chance to get a link to the 3m tape you guys used, Thanks Brian
Thank you! We recently had to fix them again after 18 months from the first repair! here is the link to the 3m tape amzn.to/3THCnwF
Great in depth video . As someone who is looking to get into this lifestyle. How much did a repair like this on the road cost? Also how much a month do you budget for maintenance?
This repair cost me around $300, but that is far cheaper than the damage that it would have caused if we didn't address the issue! For the most part we spend around $100 a month on maintenance! With the exception of a few repairs that cost more that cost is pretty accurate!
@@PavingNewPaths thank you this is very helpful...
Hi... I have been dealing with water intrusion on my Grand Design 30 RBS bedroom slide, the slide ski is good but I do have the flexseal tape on there now and looking of taking it off and putting some butle tape behind that metal peace your tech took off and clean the area up. Wish I had not put that sstuff off..Question: after putting butle tape and sealing on the strip, have you had anymore tape?
Shane
Here is a follow up video of the second time we had to fix it he shows more of what he does to seal it! Mind you the first video was one year previous and we currently have it broken again! Everytime we fix it, it has broken again in a year! ruclips.net/video/XSQBMPqBTKo/видео.html
The next time you have to repair one of your plastic slide ski's, and you will as they do crack. Consider using 1/16 " Aluminum.
I will look into that if I have to make this repair again!
Wow watching this wants me to go buy a tent
Being handy is definitely needed if you own an rv! We just released another video about a travel disaster we encountered that might solidify your decision! Luckily, all of the repairs have been pretty easy!
I can not understant why GD uses the cheapest playwood or MDF to build the floor of the slide. This thing is already disintegrating because is exposed to the environent and the weight of the slide and the vibrations of the road. Also, I do believe this a good design, the slide is too heavy, this is one of the route cause of the failures along with low quality materials!
Don't get me started on slides! Everything about our big slide could be better! We have already fixed it twice and it looks like a third time will be in our future!
I'm sorry to hear that! That would be expected with the design they did. There is too much weight on this slide. I do not understand all the fuzz about "Gran Design" RVs! Love your channel! Thank you for keeping cool and honest! No drama and no BS like some others!
@@Marcobelluchi-xl3gc Thank you! We just try and film things as they are! They really are great RV'S we love it but because we fulltime it seems like it always needs some attention!
Your RV Tech is really good. Would he allow you to post his location (city) and contact info?
Town and Country RV Mobile, in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Our Technician's name was Chris!
I have ordered a Momentum from the factory, have you had to deal with the factory on any of the issues you have faced, if so how did that go?
We purchased ours used so for the few issues we have had, we handle it ourselves or we get a moble tech. My uncle's just got new momentums and once delivered the local dealer is who you will have to deal with. They have had quite a few problems on new units but have all been taken care of by the dealer.
Thanks for a great video. Now I know for a fact my repair shop doesn't have a clue.
You are welcome! We have learned that is a mobile tech or service advisor talks to much about a problem they likely don't know how to fix it!
@@PavingNewPaths your right about that. Subscribed to your channel and did an "ankle" marathon tonight. Will comment on the videos later. We just do everyday life videos. Check us out. Not a lot just stuff.
We will check it out! Thanks for watching and subscribing! We appreciate it!
Happiest day off my life is when I sold my RV! They are all junk! Remember to store it indoors ironic! Lol
We have had some issues but we live in ours fulltime and we are on the move ever 10-14 days so we expect some things to happen! We have had a few major ones like our roof needed to be replaced already, but for the most part they are very minor problems!
It behooves me why rv mfgrs dont install a louvre over exposed outside seams to protect it from water intrusion. the louvre could b spring loaded to fold flat when the slide is retracted, but still have a top S edge attached in either position.
Yes, there's lots of things they could improve upon! Thank you for watching!
The wife and I are getting ready to take a very long trip. Hopefully no major or minor problems.🤞
For the most part we have had only minor problems! Our major problems were not so bad they couldn't wait until we got back home to take care of. Good Luck on your Trip!
@@PavingNewPaths thanks. We're going coast to coast southeast to northwest and back.
@@goodtobehandy Sounds awesome. We plan to get both the east and west coast done at some point!
I have the same issue with two of my slides. I know about the slides at Amazon but where can I get that 3M tape and the putty tape he used?
The putty tape comes with the new slide skis! I believe its called butyl tape! The 3M tape I am not sure he had it on his truck!
@@PavingNewPaths ok, butyl tape is the same thing they use in marine applications. Thanks
I imagine the fix was a tad pricey, but what the tech did to make it right, you get what you pay for...
I supplied the parts and I was going to replace the slide ski myself, until i asked the price it was very affordable.
@@PavingNewPaths BUT, you got and education along the way, that's the best part of having it done, that's the part you can't put a price on...
Where did you get the slide ski?
I got it off of amazon! Here is the link! amzn.to/3IACcvN
What is your plan for the water damaged wood? We just discovered this issue in our rv.
We caught it when it first happend so we were able to keep flex tape on it and keep it out of the elements as much as possible before we had it repaired! The tech checked it out and said there was no issues to worry about!
@@PavingNewPaths oh awesome! We're gonna start taking off the trim and whatnot and get a better look and I'm really praying the wood is in decent condition so we don't have to do anything more than replace the skis 🙏
@@OliveB69 The tech actually told us to we did good by using the flex tape and while there was evidence water had got there through the damaged ski, he said it was not damaged and was completely dry! Otherwise, he would not have done the repair to damaged wood! I stay on the RV and am always watching for things, so I caught this one pretty fast after a move!
@@PavingNewPaths the wood is a bit wet on ours :( slightly squishy but not bad. It just rained a couple days ago. Hoping we can dry it out really well and get it fixed up with no further issues.
If you can get it dry and keep it dry until you can fix it! Some water is ok but once it starts seeping deeper is when it becomes a problem!
Can't believe you didn't give his company a plug at the end of the video
Usually at the request of the company or the tech they don't like to be in the video or get a plug. In this case the Tech didn't have a problem being on camera he just asked I try to avoid showing his face!
Ya dude don't mess with people who do the job. Let him work or pay him tipple
He agreed to be on film for the job and didn't mind us assisting him!
I was wondering what was the name of the RV mobile company that repaired your slide? I am trying to keep a log of repair shops for our road trips...
Town and Country Mobile RV in Memphis TN!
If you tape it, you need to be careful to watch for mold
Good advice!
Hey the technician was awesome. Can we get his Info? Thank you
His info is listed in the description of the video! He was great! Said that being an rv tech is the only job he's had since he was 18!
He works for Town and Country Mobile RV repair in Memphis Tennessee!
The adjustment is pretty much the same thing as adjusting tie rod ends on a car
there is actually two adjustments that need to be made and the Tech showed me how I did them in the wrong order which fixed the side I was working on but moved the adjustment to the other side! If you do it correctly can adjust the travel and the squareness of the slide!
the slide ski should have been tucked up under the side wall. really sucky the way he done it. I'm installing slide skis on my Montana. however, as of now I run a piece of duct tape right below the trim screws and let it hang. water will run off the tape that's hanging and never touch the slide floor. I may just keep doing what I'm doing and changing it each time. not sure yet. but I sure dont want them mounted like that. what a disaster.
He made the repair according to how our slides are built! However they did it incorrectly at the factory that is why we had the failure! Its been almost 6 months and about 30 moves with no issue from the slide ski!
Wait, what?....
We had a problem with our main slide ski and the slide needed adjusting! We hired a mobile tech to help us, and he allowed us to film the process!
I thought the manufacturer would at least USE Stainless Steel Screws when spending ALOT of money!!
Why would the manufacturer use stainless screws in wood? With no damage to this area the screws would never be wet!
@@PavingNewPaths At the very end of the video...that last piece of trim has regular screws in it. I was also surprised that they use chip board for the floor of the slideouts...at the very least it should be treated fir PLYWOOD.
Take Care!
That last piece of trim also has two layers of butyl putty it is going through and is securing into wood! The question you should be asking is not why didn't they use ss screws, it should be why did they use foam, instead of the putty to secure the piece in the first place! The Tech also explained that piece is there just to cover a seam and has no structural value!
Must be a Momentum...
It is a Momentum!

Thanks! And we don't expect to please everyone with our music choices.
That makes no sense. Aren’t your slides on separate switches?
No they are not, hydraulic opposing slides are always on the same circuit, that is why you have to turn the valves to isolated which slide cylinder you want to move!
@@PavingNewPaths …Strange. Thanks for answering.
Duh. Just in case uz slow
No matter how slow I read this I still don't know what you're talking about!
Again simple solution : get a smaller rig !
Again it was a simple solution, we replaced the slide ski and made adjustments to the slide cylinders to fix our issues! Still don't need a smaller rig!
Stay away from Heartland

That what you get for buying a crappy camper
We actually love our rv and don't think it's crappy at all!
