    I bought a brass Mule reso when Matt was building in his basement. I had to sell it during the height of Covid due to financial strife. BIG REGRET. I can’t remember which number I had but it was close to 100. The reason I tell you this is that you are nit picking the finish and solder joints more than most would. There were 100 reso’s built by Matt before mine and it didn’t look as good as your first build. It sounded and played brilliantly but the fit and finish on the body was not nearly as nice as your build. The neck however on my Mule was superb. Matt was a neck maker for another company before going out on his own and his experience really shined on it.
    My Mule priced out at 1400.00 and now you can’t touch them for less than maybe 3500.00 so I could never buy another.
    I am a experienced wood/metal worker and plan to build one. Your vids have been inspiring and invaluable. Thank you for your great documentation. I haven’t watched further than this episode but again your reso looks superb.

      Wow thank you. I really credit Matt with a lot of the info that I used on this build, he's obviously making a brilliant product and I would think $3,500 for one of his would be a great value. There's just so much that goes into building one these things.

    Regarding finish, National say this of their "Raw" series steel models -
    "Raw Series instruments have a minimal, wax body finish giving a naturally smooth feel that will patina over time...Steel models, like all National steel bodied instruments, have an interior finish to protect against rusting."
    I don't know which wax they use, but this sounds like a good possibility (over laquer) to me.

    • @Ninety2guits
      @Ninety2guits  Год назад +1

      I think the wax will work. One thing I know, there is no chance lacquer will stick to this polished surface for more than a week or two. Before I polished it I would get surface rust forming every 3 or 4 days. Now that it's polished it has not had any signs of rust yet.

    • @rodjones117

    Hello there. I just binge watched your resonator build and afrer a little research i realized you are based our of mh hometown! I live in citrus heights now but this is where i was born. Ive played guitar for about 20 uears and have become a big resonator fan over the last 5. Im not sure if you are familiar with the late Chris Whitley, but he was really the reason ive become such a fan of these beautiful i instruments. I recommend his c.d. Dirt Floor. His use of alternate tunings and phrasing are borderline magic. I was lucky to meet him and he was about as cool as they come. Anyways, nice to meet you and if you havent heard his playing , please take the time to give him a listen. You can thank me later. Great work.

I was gonna recommend a live version of one of her songs that makes it clear that sometimes it's simply the genetics. Her chords and phrasing are pure magic. I'll find the link. Man, I'm so glad I found your channel. I've dreamed of one day owning a National but honestly, I think I'd rather have one of your builds. That neck looked so incredible and to be made by someone in my hometown?!? I need to grab one before word gets out that there is a builder/ alchemist conjuring true magic. I'd put it up against Mule or Beard any day. You have a gift and it's obvious it's been honed through hard work and good taste. Your willingness to fail is where you excel beyond most. I think my playing style has a bit to do with that, I was palm muting a lot. Also I wasn't wearing fingerpicks like most people do when they play these. When down the line people will buy your resonator guitars, guitarists being as they are will attempt to maximise tone and will inevitably try it themselves. Having said that, Your guitar sounds good from what i heard, just making sure your aware you can have said National cone. @@Ninety2guits - I’m in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - so the logistics of me trying out your guitar is tricky ! Thanks for the wonderful compliment though ! Your final result looks great.
      My understanding on the cone & biscuit is that the cone needs to be as thin as possible - so it can really vibrate and let the sound out. National spun the cone metal as thin as they dared - possibly thinner than the downward pressure a set of strings could withstand. Then the spun cone had a spiral embossed into it to strengthen the shape. The Quarterman type cone you have tend to be thicker - so the strings can’t drive good tone & volume out of it. I think you would be really impressed how much better a National Resophonic “Hot-Rod”cone (with their biscuit) would improve your guitar.
      The biscuit needs to be as light as possible (so yours needs to be a lot thinner). National Resophonic use maple for the biscuit & the saddle, but the 1930’s Nationals actually used Boxwood for the saddle for the warmest tone.
      The well on your guitar looks a bit deeper than on Nationals - so with a thin biscuit, your saddle will need to be quite tall. Check out National Resophonic’s website “Store” page for resonator cones.

      That is great info, thank you. I was already thinking my sound well was too deep and have made changes to my CAD plans, thanks for confirming that for me. Tell ya what, that guitar turned out pretty sweet! People tell me that I have an amazing amount of patience but you amaze me with "well that didn't turn out quite right. Let's build it again, and again." I missed the part where you added the maple at the heel joint. I'm supposing it was needed for intonation. But it's a nice detail all the same. Your playing very is good, that's a difficult style. I'll bet your slide playing isn't too bad either. What date were you traveling thru my area?

    • @Ninety2guits
      @Ninety2guits  Год назад +1

      Great eye Dane. That piece of maple is one of the things I want to talk about, it wasn't for intonation tho. I had thinner ones on there just for aesthetics. I did a lot of my neck fitment before I put the back on and after I put the back on my neck fitment wasn't great anymore. So I made a thicker aesthetic piece so I had some wiggle room for fitment, which I now call a "feature" Lol!
      I'm not sure when I'm passing through yet, I drive thru your town on the way to help my Mom get some legal documents finished and signed but the documents aren't ready yet. I will try and give as much notice as possible so we can get some coffee or something.
