@@Marryjanesbud War is much rarer. It used to be everywhere, at all times, people underestimate the brutality and scale of tribal warfare. When Indo-Europeans conquered it led to millions dying. Every Chinese civil war was tens of millions. By the time we get to World War 2 you really see war maxed out. In some parts of the world the wars are still pretty common, especially Africa, but in reality, for most of the world, after WW2, there was a massive decrease in war and casualties from war. Even with the wars you mentioned, the total numbers of people dying to war are relatively much less than WW2 and before. Seven Years War, Napoleonic Wars, 30 years war, WW1, and all the tribal wars, it was just far more common back in the day. If anything, you thinking these few modern wars are worse than the old one shows how much modern people are spoiled by Pax Americana, don't know how bad things were before, and have much higher standards in terms of what they are willing to accept in terms of atrocity. So I think it's the opposite. Remember, people basically let WW1 go on for 4 years, that was just a pure meat grinder, far worse than any modern war. The Congo Wars are pretty bad, the Ethiopian Civil war was pretty bad, and the war in Ukraine is at least as bad as Korea. But, none of these (except maybe the Congo Wars) are comparable to the wars of old, and is much rarer than it was before. Massive wars like Napoleonic wars were happening all the time before WW2. Truth is, way less people die from war these days, even though we have a higher population and much more dangerous weapons. There are still problems, wars like Ukraine/Russia are among the worst of them, but stuff like that used to be normal, now it's seen as a big deal. The Congo stuff is the real scary shit with potential to see a 3rd war with tens of millions dying again, other than that, it's just WW3 that we have to worry about, which thankfully hasn't happened yet and hopefully won't.
I really liked the part where Noa said "YOU KILLED MY FATHER!" then Proximus replies with "No Noa, I am your father" and then Noa replies with a long "NOOOOO!" it really hit me.
Remember the scene where Raka says 'Hey Noa, Hey Noah' over again and Noa's like 'Ugh you're so annoying orange'. I think these apes would make a killer web series together.
I hope they bring back Raka, there was a post credit of him making his “gurgle” at the very end of the movie so hopefully it’s a hint that he survived the rapids and they’ll bring him back later on.
I liked how they passively made Noah into a Caesar with the “scar” he received in the beginning on his shoulder area as Caesar had a birthmark there too. I also predict that Proximus Caesar isn’t dead but with the injuries he received at the end he’ll look like Koba.
The rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy is probably one of the most underrated franchises of our time. It’s not necessarily ignored, but doesn’t get near as much recognition as most other franchises do. Which is a real shame because the movies are so well received by almost everyone. The CGI is absolutely incredible and the story telling is so well done. Caesar’s character arch in other movies was phenomenal and his character truly represents what a leader should be. Koba’s character arch was also interesting and showed how hate can destroy relationships with your loved ones. When I heard it was getting a 4th movie I was both excited for it, but also nervous that it wouldn’t live up to the other three movie’s expectations. I’m glad to hear people enjoyed this movie and it’s giving the franchise more spotlight.
I’m actually glad it isn’t bigger. I like that it’s this smaller franchise because it won’t suffer the same fate as the big names. Try to appeal to a mass audience and lose what made them special.
Underrated is a good thing. Means only the people who care about it will consume it and it won't get the attention of more greedy people who would of already planned 5 sequels in a few years. I have only heard good things about this franchise, and it shows.
i actually one theory about why this series never popped off as much as it should have. in short, this movie is not marketable. by that i mean that it’s really hard to sell merchandise for these apes, how do you sell apes that are almost indistinguishable from real life apes, you really can’t unless you design every ape as much as they designed proximus caesar or on a lesser extent koba. i think it’s like trying to sell a golden retriever figurine as the main character of your new movie “uprising of the galaxy of the hounds” it’s just not recognizable enough to be sold easily. also the title is really long.
Some of the effects where the apes were walking through water was mindblowing. Like it looked like actual apes were taking those steps with the physics.
this movie was shit.. there is no way apes never took a shit in the movie, they never ate! they never had sex! where were all the baby apes? this movie was so unrealistic.. what do they use the eagles for?
I loved the way Proximus talks man “WHAT A WONDERFUL DAYYYYY” and how he yells “YEEEAAAAHHH” while the apes were pulling on the door shit had me so hyped and invested
I thought it was really good too. The most impressive part being that this franchise has had several directors but they all feel like they were made by the same person, like they feel as if they have all had the same vision and the progression of the story has just made so much sense crafted from beginning with care where it is believable that a scientist trying to cure Alzheimer's and play God would create a chain reaction leading to a new evolution of a species. from the beginning and watching rise to this is one of the best prequel-sequel film progressions maybe ever honestly.
I honestly don't understand the hate behind it. I can understand that the film is not the best one in the series bit maybe those people did not grow up with originals.
honestly knowing where the book goes i was so in the camp of 'fuck the humans'.. but i think its either that they have to have atleast some humans in the next films to have a B plot or they havent decided whether they want to go the route of the book where Humans devolve into just animals that the apes control.. its honestly probably both because the moment Mae and Noa talk at the end i was really hoping for a conclusion that Apes now believe humans are irredeemable or something but they do the very obvious cliffhanger of "Can Humans and apes live together?'
I was like wait so she was pretending to be a primal human to spy on the apes and to get info. Then she was task to blow up a bunker and all the apes. The. She was task to give the striving humans the info they need to connect with other humans. I was like whoa whoa. Humans can have power but Apes can't, the same apes that gain intelligence from the mistakes that humans did.
@@Art-X-W You didn't watch the movie. First you need gas (gas doesn't last 300 years) for tanks and as you saw there was only like a couple dozen guns and half the ammo probably useless by now.
Noa was definitely a great character, and is perfect leading into how the world became the way it was in the original movie. I see him adopting technology and innovating more, helping build ape civilization. While he has a good heart, he also clearly has no innate compassion for humans like Caesar did, and I could even see him leading the charge to war in this new trilogy. Edit: Also, this movie is great at show don’t tell. When Noa saw the model of Saturn, you can tell that’s what he first saw in the telescope from how he reacted.
Thanks for the review - I've been rewatching the trilogy with a buddy recently and had no idea another film was in our midst. Feeling extra moist now so thanks!
Just the concept of two competing intelligences that isn’t extraterrestrial within a semi realistic setting is so interesting. A lot of philosophical topics and unique world building to be explored
I think Mae's inclusion wasn't exactly "flat' more so than a more stoic and guarded performance; it's supposed to inverse the first trilogy where apes are under-estimated and turn out to be extremely dangerous. It also is necessary to explore the theme the new film and its upcoming sequels explore regarding human vs. ape coexistence. I enjoyed her part in the film, especially because of Raka's openness to humans because of how they were to Caesar and how this shed Noa's biases, and especially how this all turned out by the end
I know people are at first thinking there is no need for more planet of the apes movies, but I just want to say to those who are unaware that this series is a reboot. In the original series, there are 5 films and part 4 and 5 focus on Ceaser. In the reboot with ceaser dead, it seems they will focus on it becoming a full circle and the reboot will be like the beginning of the original films. A very interesting take but I think it will go far.
They are making 9 movies. So 3 different sets of trilogies. There was ceasars and now the rest will be following his ideas good and bad. As well, spoilers here, they did shaft raka I agree. His death came way too soon. However his entire arc in the plot was to simply educate noa on ceasar and put him on that path. Which they did well. But you are right they definitely coulda done is death better or even go a different route and put him on a different path
I haven't seen it yet but I definitely have high expectations for the movie and not in a bad way. I don't think any of us expect something extremely deep and profound from these movies but for the trilogy of the last 10 years, they literally haven't missed. This has to be one of the greatest and highest quality franchises of the 2010's and 2020's. Just non stop, consistently good movies. I'm glad to hear you appreciated the latest one and I look forward to it.
It’s so nice to know I’m not the only one who fell in love with these movies, I can’t wait to see this one and how it connects to the very original, I will miss Caesar though. Apes together strong.
Noah's intelligence-driven approach to fights is a refreshing deviation from the usual muscle flexing protagonists. The CGI does indeed deserve applause.
Rokka was definitely shafted, but in a "Hero's Journey" kind of way where, once the template was established (see: "The Mentor" trope), you could immediately guess where it was going. Kind of the same thing with Mae (see: "The Lancer" trope). The story is more of a character study that uses the classic Hero's Journey cycle.
To be honest, it did feel like it kind of insinuated, based on the trailers, that we would get an ape character and a human character finally be friends with one another, or allies in a way (kind of like how Malcolm almost became that in "Dawn of The Planet of The Apes" with Caesar), but in the film they didn't flesh out Mae as much as they could as an introduction to her, though I don't think her characterization was awful per se, and she also didn't exactly align to the fact that the Apes are basically their own people now; she also stated that the world didn't belong to the Apes, but back to the humans. I don't think she is yet to believe that maybe humans should be looking towards coexistence after rebuilding themselves, instead of domination. I just hope that at least in one of the future films going forward we can get that coexistence or friendship. Apes together, strong. All together, stronger.
Big problem i have with her character now is that it just doesn't make sense at this point in the timeline (100 - 300 years post WAR for the pota). The fact that this film is set so far into the future now but still having the Humans (who are the most intelligent beings on the planet) still act like entitled racists is beyond stupid... The Apes at this point are just people now, only limited by cultural experience... The Humans know this and should act like it, The planet doesn't belong to Human's in the first place never mind now only a handful are left on each continent. For Ape's as intelligent and forward thinking as Promixmas [Minus his selfishness and dislike towards humans] they should be looking to communicate and bargin with... Teaching apes how to read human languages and basic but powerful science... Just giving Ape communities the ability to read science books on figures like Newton, Tesla, Eeinstein, Etc. Would transform the world for the better nevermind figures in biology and chemistry... I mean come on simply giving Noa's Primitive tribe a bunch of children's first word books would give them the ability to unlock centuries of human knowledge that exists in the buildings around them...
@@xproflipscarab Yeah, admittedly it does feel out of left field from Mae to not see the Apes as their own people, and it's not necessarily that she really states as such, but it is implied that she doesn't fully believe them to be; plus they may know *of* the Apes but don't try to interact with them unless they have to - or interactions with them had already been negative (such as Proximus taking over a human settlement to create his kingdom). The only thing that I can see happening here is that she, and generations before her as well, were raised being told about how humans deserve and even have the right to take back the world and become the dominate species again. It does still feel weird, but because we haven't yet seen how humans have been living these past few centuries, maybe we might get some answers as to why there are humans who still think this way.
@@2Ezennia based on what? The plot of other POTA movies? The apes are basically equal to humans in intellect, they just lack the experience. Proximus' is literally proof that apes are no better than humans... Sentience is sentience... Physical composition has little to do with anything
@@xproflipscarabI’m surprised you think any world, fictional or real, can “fix” prejudice or any form of racism because time has passed. Her having any apprehensions to apes makes perfect sense tbh.
You can watch this without seeing any others tbh as it's many generations later. Might even be interesting as characters have opinions based on stories of the original trilogy but aren't 100% accurate. I think it would have been neat to watch kingdom then go back and see how the truth has been warped by time and the narratives characters want to push. But if you do want to see them only the last three, rise, dawn, and war are in this films universe
@@ENDSMITESI’d recommend the one from 2011 with James Franco then the next two because those 3 movies are set in the same universe as this new movie except it takes place many generations later
with them going with making noa more clever and not as good at actually fighting, it reminds me of the parallels between the real life Caesar and his successor, Augustus. personally found that really cool
I think part of the reason Mae felt flat had to do with their filming process. They had the actor playing Mae shoot all of her scenes twice essentially. The first shot was her acting alongside all the other actors playing all the apes, and then another clean shot where Mae had to do the exact same performance beat for beat, but all by herself without any of the other actors playing the apes in the scene with her, so that they could digitally insert the apes from the first shot into Mae’s clean shot. That means the majority of the footage of Mae used in the movie is from takes where the actress had to do the whole scene by herself with none of the energy from the other actors to play off of.
Planet of the apes is a rare franchise that seemingly goes on forever and ever but also never gets boring or stale. Somehow every movie is a banger in its own right.
I liked this movie because the dialogue is simple by necessity, so there is no long-winded exposition that is hard to follow. It makes for very pleasant watching.
It's interesting that the main tribe is the Eagle Clan considering that the Roman flag was an eagle. I wonder what the Clan will turn into over the next movies considering that Noe said he's going to make the clan stronger, that he agrees with Proximus, and doesn't know how humans and apes can coexist. And they're likely going to become more militarized as they face many more threats both from apes and humans
Is it just me or are they hinting at making the storyline into the OG movie where they’re in space. Towards the end when Noah and his friend go to the telescope there is a stone carving of an astronaut and Noah and Meg both look into the stars at night. Just a theory.
The way they acknowledge the trilogy and then start a new saga reminds me of kingdom hearts going from the xehanort saga to the master of masters saga.
Spoilers in this comment regarding Mei I found it weird that she was trying to oppose Noah towards the end. Especially the scene where she hides a gun behind her back cause she doesn’t trust him. If the market department was trying to put a human in the movie for relatability, it makes it hard to relate to someone who didn’t have good intentions at the end, when we already know our protagonist is a good character and helped her accomplish her goals.
This is a really good review, but does Charlie not know this is more than a trilogy? In the beginning he’s talking about it like the trilogy is all there is to the story. There are 8 other movies and a TV show. The series started and played out way in the distant future. The point of the trilogy and this new one are meant to fill in what happened between the present and the distant future we see in the very first Planet of the Apes. Making another after War for the Planet of the Apes isn’t extending a finished story. We already know how the story ultimately ends and how the planet dies and the subsequent alternate reality that gets birthed from it because of the old movies. Now we’re learning how it got to that point.
Been hyped for monke for a while. Watched the original movies a couple times when i had them on vhs, then got into the ceasar trilogy. So more apes is good for me, glad they actually good
I'd call it a timeskip sequel, which is how I refer to continuations that take place many years after the end of the first show or movie. Legend of Korra is kind of an example of this.
Me before: "Man why does Noah lose every fight!?" Charlie: "I like Noah not winning every fight" Me after: "Tbh I kinda like how Noah doesn't win every fight"

Especially when noah appeared in the clouds mufasa style and he says "ape together stronkg"
I can't wait for the sequel when Raka the Orange comes back on a horse in a white robe with a white staff and is Raka the White
Also the part where Caesar says, " Et Tu Noah!!"
That one part where Noa was in a duel with Koba's ghost and he said "It's apin' time" and proceeded to ape all over the place caught me off guard.
Remember the scene where Raka says 'Hey Noa, Hey Noah' over again and Noa's like 'Ugh you're so annoying orange'. I think these apes would make a killer web series together.

@@JIreland1992bro Dawn of the planet of the apes made $700 MILLION don’t act like it’s some hidden gem lol
Underrated is a good thing. Means only the people who care about it will consume it and it won't get the attention of more greedy people who would of already planned 5 sequels in a few years. I have only heard good things about this franchise, and it shows.
I'm glad I watched the trilogy recently. I'm looking forward to this one
i actually one theory about why this series never popped off as much as it should have.
in short, this movie is not marketable. by that i mean that it’s really hard to sell merchandise for these apes, how do you sell apes that are almost indistinguishable from real life apes, you really can’t unless you design every ape as much as they designed proximus caesar or on a lesser extent koba. i think it’s like trying to sell a golden retriever figurine as the main character of your new movie “uprising of the galaxy of the hounds” it’s just not recognizable enough to be sold easily.

When Noa climbed that building and said, "It's Monkey Time," that hit so hard 😭😭😭
Then he used his bananaramadingdong to ceaser all over king chong salad in spanish
Proximus Caesar ended up being right in the end about the humans and Mae was a sneaky little girl.
honestly knowing where the book goes i was so in the camp of 'fuck the humans'.. but i think its either that they have to have atleast some humans in the next films to have a B plot or they havent decided whether they want to go the route of the book where Humans devolve into just animals that the apes control..
its honestly probably both because the moment Mae and Noa talk at the end i was really hoping for a conclusion that Apes now believe humans are irredeemable or something but they do the very obvious cliffhanger of "Can Humans and apes live together?'
Koba was right about them too, but ape not kill ape, making them evil
@Danny_Koba We could of had apes in tanks holding AK 47s. Plus air support from flipping eagles. That battle would of been epic against humans.
@@Art-X-W You didn't watch the movie. First you need gas (gas doesn't last 300 years) for tanks and as you saw there was only like a couple dozen guns and half the ammo probably useless by now.
Just rewatched the trilogy and man it was so good. You fall so in love with Caesar and what he stands for. You've made me really hopeful for this.

HOW IS IT SEVEN YEARS SINCE WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES?
I swear that movie came out a year and a half ago...
Right? This blew my mind

Noah's intelligence-driven approach to fights is a refreshing deviation from the usual muscle flexing protagonists. The CGI does indeed deserve applause.
Next movie title:
The Universe Of The Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes
The dawn of the rise of the war for the kingdom of the planet of the apes
The final one : the god of the planet the apes
Must achieve eternal MONKE
Rokka was definitely shafted, but in a "Hero's Journey" kind of way where, once the template was established (see: "The Mentor" trope), you could immediately guess where it was going. Kind of the same thing with Mae (see: "The Lancer" trope). The story is more of a character study that uses the classic Hero's Journey cycle.
There's a orangutan's sound at the end of the credits, maybe that could be Raka
The CGI is absolutely mind blowing

What planet of the apes movies should I watch before this one?
You can watch this without seeing any others tbh as it's many generations later. Might even be interesting as characters have opinions based on stories of the original trilogy but aren't 100% accurate. I think it would have been neat to watch kingdom then go back and see how the truth has been warped by time and the narratives characters want to push.
But if you do want to see them only the last three, rise, dawn, and war are in this films universe

Somehow every movie is a banger in its own right.
i love how they twisted ceasers teachings and merged them with kobas ideoligys
At the end of the credits there was an orangutang sound effect, i think Raka survived.

I found it weird that she was trying to oppose Noah towards the end.
Its because she doesn't know if Apes and Humans can live together.
Just saw it today with my mom for mother's day, we loved it. Well deserved score and right way to do a follow up/reboot.
I am SOOO hyped to see it. The Ceaser trilogy are some of my favourite movies of all time
This is a really good review, but does Charlie not know this is more than a trilogy? In the beginning he’s talking about it like the trilogy is all there is to the story. There are 8 other movies and a TV show. The series started and played out way in the distant future. The point of the trilogy and this new one are meant to fill in what happened between the present and the distant future we see in the very first Planet of the Apes. Making another after War for the Planet of the Apes isn’t extending a finished story. We already know how the story ultimately ends and how the planet dies and the subsequent alternate reality that gets birthed from it because of the old movies. Now we’re learning how it got to that point.
