  • The infamous Red Rocker himself, Sammy Hagar, stopped by the KLOS virtual series New & Approved to speak with Matt Pinfield on his extensive career and how he mended his relationship with the late Eddie Van Halen.
    Hagar reflects on his humble beginnings of moving his family and early bandmates to San Francisco, on a whim, to kickstart his career after speaking with a physic in his hometown of Fontana. After making the big unexpected jump, the rest was history as the famous Montrose singer has solidified his legacy in music history.
    Speaking on his early work and relationship with Van Halen, Hagar shares his first experience recording with the band while they created songs like "Summer Nights", and he also speaks on some regret he feels with the his previous book release which shared a bit of a negative light for both parties. Prior to Eddie Van Halen's 2020 passing, Sammy explains to Matt that the two were fortunately able to reconnect and mend their relationship thanks to the great comedian George Lopez.
    Hagar goes on to speak about his love for performing cover songs, his admiration for his "BOA" Tina Turner, and much more.

    Man, Sammy is such a great guy... positive, happy attitude on life. Always smiling..... Just thinking how close we all were to seeing him and Eddie back on stage together. I've always been a gigantic Van Halen fan, but something about the Sammy version just brought out the best music from all of those guys when they were together

    I just finished reading Sammy's book, "Red" published in 2010.
    I loved learning about how he survived his turbulent childhood, about his family, his early days as a young musician, how hard he worked from a very young age, determined not to end up poor, which was his childhood experience, his fascination with numerology and mysticism (a passion which I share), his penchant for starting businesses, becoming an entrepreneur and making money.
    All of that was wonderful. However, I can easily see the proof of his recent admission that all parts relating to his experience with Van Halen were written out of bitterness and emotional pain. I could tell which stories he'd wished he hadn't told about Eddie and Alex, stories that were jut not necessary to share with the public.
    The most apparent evidence he wrote about them from an emotionally hurt place was in two areas: when talking about creating 5 number one albums with Van Halen, he doesn't expound on any of the joyous moments. Sure, he mentions being Eddie's best friend for a while, living next door to him and Valerie in Malibu, driving to 5150 studios every morning, racing down the PCH together.
    But he mentions the song, Dreams, a song he himself said on Professor of Rock's interview was his best song he wrote with Eddie (and I 100% agree with that) he literally mentions once in one sentence. Not praising it, not talking about how beautiful and special it was, how it represented some of the best music he ever created in his career, not just in VH but overall. No, he literally mentions it as a song that was written after the producer asked for "one more song." That's it.
    The other evidence that Sammy wrote about Van Halen coming from a purely emotionally hurt place is that when talking about Eddie's alcoholism and generally odd/outlandish behavior, especially in the 2004 time period, he does so with no compassion whatsoever for Eddie. I get it though, because when we are hurt, it's hard to acknowledge anyone else's pain.
    Not once in the book did Sammy think, "Hey, maybe all of Eddie's destructive behavior is an indication of deep, unresolved, unhealed emotional issues; Eddie is probably in a lot of pain.." Not once did he try to see beyond Eddie's toxic behavior and take it as an outward sign of Eddie's own pain; Eddie may not have taken his split with Valerie and the dissolution of his marriage in 2002 well and his erratic behavior may have been a sign of that. He may have been using drugs and alcohol as a means of escape and not dealing with that pain.
    For that matter, none of us have any idea how alcoholism had affected Ed and Al's parents' marriage, what the quality of their marriage was, and in turn, how it may have negatively affected their children, though we all know alcohol was a major part of Ed and Al's youth (I got to see with my own eyes the VH logo carved on the cement curb outside of "Van Halen Central" which was the liquor store a few blocks away from the VH family home in Pasadena.)
    Now yes, it does seem Ed and Al were insecure regarding Sammy's ability to make money from other businesses besides music and thus unfairly tried to limit him by prohibiting any advertisement of Sammy's bars and tequila brand, etc. during the ill-fated 2004 reunion tour; all Ed and Al did was music and truly, they were not business men in any sense compared to Sammy. I also fully acknowledge Eddie and Alex kicked Sammy out of the band most unfairly and bad-mouthed him in the press. It is a shame if the manager Ray Daniels truly poisoned Eddie's ear towards Sammy.
    But again, Sammy's own emotional hurt could not allow him an ounce of compassion for how much Eddie had been hurting during that time period. He and Eddie were musical soulmates who wrote some phenomenal music together and this is not truly expressed by Sammy anywhere in the book or minimally at best. Even the Balance tour seems to not be fairly judged by Sammy, which You Tube videos prove that Eddie, with his bad hip and Al with his neck brace, showed the band at their tightest. Eddie's playing in particular was sharp, fast and clean on that tour. Instead Sammy surmises Eddie was not sober even then, though Eddie had claimed sobriety in interviews back in '95.
    So yeah, I enjoyed this book but as a Van Halen fan who began listening in 1986 when I was 13 and got 5150 as my very first cassette tape, (I dug back to all the old stuff too and loved it ALL. I am a fan of Van Halen in all incarnations. Yes, even w/ Gary) and was inspired by Eddie to play guitar (as we all were back then) , I felt sad reading how judgmental Sammy was towards Eddie, showing no love or compassion whatsoever. But again, I get it. Sammy was still hurt when he wrote this book and it shows.
    I am very happy for Sammy that he was able to reconnect with Eddie before he transitioned and express their love for one another. In the end, that's what's matters.

      Truth. I think Sammy regrets being shitty like that but then we all make mistakes. There was hurt on both ends and Eddie said plenty of bad stuff about Sammy as well. It was two best friends feeling hurt and lashing out. I think if Eddie had lived they would have fixed things up. Sammy really doesn't seem like a bad person.

      @@graceelaine698 I don't think it was distasteful at all. The media was going to go to Sammy for comment. • @j_freed
      @j_freed 3 года назад +1

      The TransTrem allows the player to use the whammy bar to bend the pitch of all the strings while keeping in tune with each other, it’s a completely different sound than using a standard type vibrato setup which doesn’t do this.
      The TransTrem also lets you push down the bar to lock it in a different position so the guitar plays in a lower tuning, as you can hear Eddie using it on the song Summer Nights. It transposes the note positions perfectly. This probably is not all that complicated,
      The Steinberger itself is a pretty conventional guitar otherwise from a playing standpoint.

Roth may be a motormouth, but he knows when to curb it, and other than the tribute single, he’s been relatively silent, as have those who REALLY knew him. Contrast that with microphone hog Hagar.

    • @ltd4all
      @ltd4all 3 года назад

      @Troy Gene But, people always ask Sammy about Eddie....It's not Sammy's fault, and I'm sure Sammy is proud of his work with Van Halen, even if it was difficult at times, dealing with singing Dave's songs better than Dave himself, and dealing with Alex's BS....There's a reason why Mike left VH, and that "money train" to play with Sammy, and it comes down to having bandmates that are tolerable, and actually enjoying playing again.

    • @Ogrelord5150
      @Ogrelord5150 3 года назад +2

      Totally agree, he's got to milk it for all it's worth. Good for you Sammy, but I could care less. You got VH to market your Cabo Wabo industries and you made your fortune. The real tragedy is that Michael Anthony didn't get patch things up with Eddie. MA was there in the beginning wish he could have said goodbye to Eddie. But like you said, instead we get motormouth everywhere you turn.

    • @ltd4all
      @ltd4all 3 года назад

      Nobody cares about roth anymore. roth never had anything important to sing about, let alone anything remotely intelligent to say in an interview, THAT is why nobody interviews, or cares what roth tries to think about....That's the difference. Hagar is intelligent, and has something to say, and roth has nothing but expense between his ears, explaining why Eddie didn't feel the need to reconcile with roth...It just wasn't worth it to Eddie, or anyone else for that matter. roth was always the guy who was overpaid to talk over Van Halen songs.

    • @ltd4all
      @ltd4all 3 года назад +1

      @@Ogrelord5150 It was Eddie that kicked Michael Anthony out of Van Halen...And from that day forward, Van Halen, as a band ceased to exist. Michael Anthony was the foundation that held up the Van Halen brothers, and Eddie blew it by letting his brother make decisions.

    18:34 Sammy is such a nice dude it’s crazy how much he got pushed around. It does seem like it happens a lot where a super successful band that has been going at it for years and are at the point where they can take a break and it will not effect their career and it becomes a big riff in the band because a member wants to take a break a year off and if Sammy wanted to take a year off in the 90’s I don’t blame him what’s the point of having millions of dollars and working so hard if you can’t live? If I was him at the time I would have built a studio at my house and took a year or 2 off. I would work on stuff at the studio once in a while and invite the guys over to jam once in a while. Like I’m not leaving the band I just want to spend time with family it’s just a long vacation. Shit if my band members lived close I would be cool with jamming once a week so when we get back together we have a ton of material.

    oh how i wish that the story of Sam and Edward hashing things out before his passing was true, but my gut and knowing the complicated mess that festered for years when it really didn't need to be blown out of proportion by both IMHO, then that and Sammy's facial expressions when he talks about it tells me it didn't happen but makes for a great story to tell that i would have loved to have been reality.
    Ed and Sam i think were stubborn to the end but time ran out unexpectedly and it didn't really get resolved, may have had a few words possibly but too much time had built up between then and now to make it be ok with a brief conversation, especially because Edward was really secluded and dealing with such misery and pain of his own, I'm just not sure Ed would have had the will and the strength to try to bury that mess of hatchets left unchecked for so long. I wish that it was true but my heart deep down knowing them both, doesn't think so unfortunately.
    Just my opinion. I love them both no matter what. Edward will always be loved ETERNALLY as will Sam. May he live for another few decades before we have to think about that devastating possible loss tho.

    • @patrioticwarrior2345
      @patrioticwarrior2345 3 года назад +2

      Don't get me wrong i understood both sides at the initial time when it started, Ed needed Sam and to continue to write to avoid his pain from his divorce and Sam had his celebration of him getting married to his sweetheart , so both were kinda on opposite sides of the mirror darkly, but Roth and Landee , Templeman and Valerie all played a part in making that sink deeper then it needed to be in my opinion but as time went on it became a stand off of stubbornness and unwillingness to relent to humble ones own self's ego and perception of the split and it just got worse by everyone else's un needed involvement of 2 cents opinions and it ran away and became a life of its own. Least that's how it seemed to me.
