I love Dawn and Faiths relationship in S3 before Faith turns.
Just the thing that Dawn's invitation actually worked is a tell that Dawn indeed is considered to be that house's inhabitant.
Taking the sitcom trope of "family member we never mentioned existed before" and making it a horror movie premise is one of the most brilliant things Buffy ever did. The mystery of who Dawn is and why everyone thinks she's been there the whole time is so fascinating

The really weird thing is that in the episode "Living Conditions" they said that Buffy was having trouble with her roommate Kathy because Buffy grew up as an "only child!"
Such a strange line in that episode, seems like the writers forgot about Dawn. They were always doing that in the first four seasons 😂

They're also chalking it up to the tendency of TV shows to retcon their own continuities.

Dawn is unironically one of my favorite characters. Easy top 5 for me, mostly because i watched the show as a young girl so i related to her a lot.
I felt the same about Xander. Well, except I really was 16 years old, Nicholas Brendon was about 27 at the time.😂

Season 5...so glad to go thru it with you all. After season 1, it seemed like each season had at least one episode that became iconic...almost legendary TV...in an era where most shows stuck with familiar methods of direction and writing. Buffy constantly broke that wall, pushing expectations farther than anyone expected or predicted, consistently managing to 'one-up' its previous seasons. Without spoilers, I can only say that this stayed true for every season, including this one. Big kudos have to be given to a young Michelle Trachtenberg for stepping into an ensemble cast in their 5th year of production...and KILLIN it as a new character that has obviously been ret-conned into an existing canonical story. Got to admit...I envy you the firsts you are experiencing, you have a bumpy ride ahead of you.

Dawn was originally written as a 12 year old but they cast a 14 year old so that's why she's more immature than a girl that age normally would be.

I used to prefer 2/3 but after multiple rewatches I've come to the conclusion that Season 5 is 100% the best.
Nope, that's season 6. It's the absolute peak of the show. Season 5 only second. Season 6 elevated the show into serious and adult territory way too much.
@@FuzzyDlop season 6 is extremely controversial and season 6 doesn't happen without the more serious tone season 5 took. Also the threat in 5 was the best the show has been. The nerds were just the appetizer for the real threat that didn't come until the end of 6. I still love 6 but the way but 3 and arguably 2 is above it

I feel like I have to remind certain people that Dawn is supposed to be young teenage sister. Young. I tend to see people look at this through the eyes of adults and forget what it was like when we were younger, or how our younger siblings used to be. So let's not put an adult lens on a child character. She is portraying exactly what she needs to be portraying....
When you have that 20/20 hindsight it’s so interesting to see how Buffy naturally resents and alienates Dawn, and it just makes sense. From the beginning you assume it’s a sisterly thing but then later on things are put into perspective and it all clicks into place. I love this season. It’s honestly one of the best.
No hindsight needed when most of the viewers know that Buffy never had a sister.

@@jp3813 For some it is. You think all sisters, especially estranged sisters or sisters with big age gaps, have good relationships? It doesn’t have to be common, but it is real, and the point of Buffy is to play with TV tropes anyways. That’s how it was watching this show when it aired. It was rare to get a TV show that depicted siblings/sisters as anything but having a cats and dogs relationship.
Regardless, your initial comment missed the point. I’m talking about the perspective we get AFTER we learn about Dawn, because how they wrote her in was also satire in the commonly used trope of randomly bringing in a new character or replacing one with another actor and acting like they’ve been there the whole time.

As someone who was not a fan of the whole initiative storyline in season 4, this is a huge step better. I love season 5. Can't wait for the reaction to the craziness of some of the reveals. Definitely some of the most convoluted storytelling of the show. Thanks Normies.

If you remember all the way back to the first Dream Buffy shared with Faith, Faith mentioned getting ready for little sis and called her little Miss Muffet. Then the guy in this episode refers to Dawn as Curds and Whey. They've been building up to this for a long time.
That dream was in the finale episode of season four and Dawn shows up the first time in the next episode! Long time my ass!

I urge y’all to try and be understanding of Dawn. Many people find her super annoying upon first watch but if you really think about the situation she is in, a lot of the stuff she does is pretty believable.

Okay, considering one of this season's main themes is duality, which next episode will explore more explicitly, this is an impressive theory.
SPOILERS SPOILERS
FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON
Thematically speaking, Dawn *is* the human/child part of Buffy that Buffy will try to save, the last part of her innocence. In "Fool for Love", Spike says that every slayer has a death wish, and that Buffy's human connections are what prevent her from getting into that mind state. The more Buffy loses through the season, the closer she gets to that death wish. "I don't know how to live in this world if these are the choices."
Buffy also says "Dawn is a part of me, the only part that I-". She never finishes it, but it's implied that Dawn is the only part of herself that Buffy cares about.
I'm so excited to watch the Normies' reaction to the rest of the season.

I know she hasn't had a lot of screen time but not sure why you guys don't know Dawn. When Angel was evil he drew pictures of both Joyce and Dawn to threaten them. Plus she played miniature golf with the gang and Ted. Buffy also told Joyce not to come to graduation and for Dawn and her to leave town.
God, I had such a hugh crush on Michelle Trachtenburg when I was little.

Not giving answers to Dawn "just showing up" provides a way to make the episode about getting to know the character first.
Joyce's "new slayer thing" is in reference to Buffy wanting to change it up and officially work with Giles again (who isn't a watcher). It what she was talking about at the end of the last episode when Giles was about to tell her he was going to leave town.
Michelle Trachtenberg was in the old _Gossip Girl_ as well.
I love that Tara acknowledges she isn't a Scooby member. If a viewer pays close attention Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles are they only Scooby Members. Angel and Cordelia were never friends to anyone in the OG four and were only there because of dating Xander and Buffy. Oz was only dating Willow, Riley was only dating Buffy (and while Xander identified with him and was friendly with him didn't ask him to stay as his friend, and stated indirectly he had a hard time with being the only guy in a group of girls that age [ thus not including Giles], so he liked it when Oz and Riley were around), and Anya is only dating Xander, Tara may have a friendship with Dawn, but Dawn is only around because she's Buffy's sister and possibly mystical and not a member of the group herself, so Tara's only really dating Willow. Jenny was dating Giles and Faith felt ousted when she was trying to be part of the group, and Spike is the annoying next door neighbor-type the group cannot get rid of.
I don't blame Dawn for unintentionally inviting Harmony in so much as I blame Xander for opening the door and confronting/talking to her to begin with. Same goes for Buffy. Blaming Dawn not only when Xander opened the door to confront Harmony instead of ignoring her, but also blaming her when her mom (who, with her own words, said she invited Dracula in because she was lonely (the conversation she has with Willow and Tara indicated that and wasn't about her defensiveness over being thralled) invited one of the most famous vampires into the house one week earlier. Even if Dawn is to blame for her part, Xander and Joyce have known the rules longer. What's their excuse and why isn't Buffy chastising/yelling at either of them? Perhaps that is why Buffy doesn't rat Dawn out for going outside. Because maybe she realizes she is just as much at fault for Dawn being outside when she gets upset. Possibly.
Chris has some interesting explatives during the scene Anya get knocked out.
The writer said he imagined a full scale carousel hourse when Buffy uses the wooden horse to stake Mort. Money issues always effected what was in the writers head's to some degree, though.

You might need to go back and watch the Buffy/Faith and Buffy/Tara dream sequences.

The Dawn character was written as a 10 year old. They didn't have her cast yet. Then when Michelle Tractenburg was cast they didn't have time to make re-writes, so the tone in this episode is a bit...over the top for a 14 year old sister. Both the actress and character are 14 here.
