In US news and current events today, Oregon police arrested a 21-year-old black student who refused to show ID after being stopped for a biking violation. This 21-year-old student was stopped for allegedly riding her bike on the wrong side of the road when she refused to show police ID, she got arrested.
Genesis Hansen, 21, is a student at Oregon State University. State police stopped her for failing to ride within the lanes. Under Oregon law, it is not illegal to refuse to identify yourself, but police can detain you until they establish your identity, according to the ACLU of Oregon allegedly.

The child just wants to set up herself up but officer is in full custody mode and assume any action the individual make themself as an act of aggression. Many people died due this miscommunication but officers will protect themselves first before anything else.

You literally see him go to grab her while informing her she is under arrest and she pulls back her arm and steps back away from him. They put her down on the ground as she shown tendencies to resist and so that there is no harm to her, them or anyone else.

The girl was passive resisting and has been ordering proof of laws and as soon and she got one she asked for another and this went on for a good 20 minutes. After 25 minutes of arguing the officer told her that she either give her ID or he is going to arrest her. Couldn’t have been more patient than that.

@Steven Sweeden No they didn't. They tried to exert force and intimation for twenty minutes. Deescaltion would've been answering her question. This wasn't about resolving a conflict. They wanted to prove to her that they are a greater authority and that she has to do what they say. The level of law breaking does matter. You don't treat a suspected murderer the same as a jaywalker.

Fr. The entire idea behind a police force in general is that they have the monopoly on violence. You, an average citizen, may not use violence but they are allowed to in order to enforce the law. Thing is, in a libertarian state, the idea is for the police to only use that violence only if necessary, like dealing with a suspect of a violent crime. In an authoritarian police state, they are trained to use that violence on anyone. The US has become a police state and we voted for it. And it’s only going to get worse if we don’t stand up and do something about the pigs running our streets. We need to vote in people who will keep these people in check with legislation like always having body cams recording. Not just pressing record during an altercation, which is what they do now. And other measures like better training and an overall culture shift within police departments around the country to go back to protect and serve instead of comply or die.

They gave her the reason. He clearly stayed he was going to write her a citation for what she was doing. How is he going to do that without her ID? Shall he make it out to Jane Doe? What rights did she know? She quoted no case law, no constitutional law, in fact she gave them no actual evidence of anything aside from the fact that she knows nothing. She asked why they wanted her ID. They told her she was going to receive a citation. In fact it clearly states that they were at this for 20 minutes. 20 minutes?!! I dont blame them. If they gave her 20 minutes to provide ID and take a citation and she just acted all snobby.....yea 5his is what happens. Doesnt matter if your black or white or purple. Trust me I know

You have the right to privacy in your papers person and effects. You have that right to refuse to ID yourself unless an officer has reasonable suspicion of a crime. If you are being accused of a crime including a minor traffic violation...well at that point you must present your ID. Especially if your being cited for a violation. Trust me mr mann I've been on the losing side of this exact situation before. Not only did I end up recieving the citation and having to pay for it. I was also arrested for failure to ID. I the spent a week in jail before seeing a judge and getting a court date. Followed by another 2 weeks in jail waiting for that court date. Just to walk in the courtroom and be explained the exact same thing that I'm explaining to you right now. So...where did you study law? This one actually made me cry 😭 my best friend is black and when she visited me we were treated terrible. I live in the south and we went to two restaurants and both restaurants purposely screwed up her order and we were made to wait outside at the first one for 40 minutes while a white couple got seated before us. I’m white and I was furious. I said something twice and the first restaurant they fixed it but purposely refused to give her potato’s. I offered her mine but she said no. Second restaurant they were saying racist things in Japanese and me knowing Japanese I confronted them and the manager flipped me off and called me black loving white trash. It’s terrible how people of color are treated. They are people and deserve respect. 😢

The amount of police incompetence in the US is absurd and deeply concerning.
Not just US. The only police I would trust in the whole wide world is probably Singapore's.
They are strict af but would actually listen to reasons. Yes, they forgive minor offense if you are able to explain yourself, like the humans they are. Cops everywhere else pretend to be absolute yet they behave worse than a robot and run by their ego more than anything. It angers me everytime videos or news of this kind surface and I have never even been a victim to unfair arrest or interrogation. Would never wish that to happen to my worst enemies either, but cops are extremely special snowflakes.

She does not decide, and the cops quickly taught her that. End of lesson. riding a bike on one side of the street isnt a misdemeanor or felony she could only get a warning which is why u have lips to say " hey ma'am i need u to stay on the other side of the sidewalk"(which is unnecessary because nobody see's sidewalks as roadways anyways) instead of stopping her to ID her for no reason then slamming her to the ground which was completely unnecessary XD

Ryooken correct and also in most states your info can be put into a record data base. So later if you have involvement with police... even for a traffic infraction they type in your name and they can pull up that info. You can100% innocent but they will still have that you were held while they did a investigation.

What really sucks is that yes the charges were dropped but it still pops up on her record FOREVER unless it's expunged and trying to get it expunged is a whole other issue in and of itself
