    Notes:
    If the O-ring is missing or warped the valve will not seal and if the pool runs low on water the pump will run dry.
    If your Float Valve (Hayward, Stai-Rite, Pentair) diverter is not working, the O-ring that sits on the bottom of the skimmer could be the culprit (there is also an O-ring inside the Float Valve itself). Here are the part numbers:
    Sta-Rite 35505-1273 Float Valve O-Rings fit the Sta-Rite U3 Skimmer Float Valve
    Hayward SP1070
    SKIMMER BODY FLOAT VALVE - PENTAIR POOL PRODUCTS -- 516244
    American Products/ Admiral call their product "Equalizer Assembly" but it is basically the same thing. It has a thicker O-ring on the bottom.
    The o-ring replacement part is: O-Ring, Skimmer Bottom S20
    You can find the manufacturer of the Float Valve printed on top of the valve itself.

    Fantastic idea leaving your keys on the autofill when you're filling the pool I'm just starting my pool service my self I'm definitely going to use that idea I always second guess myself As I'm driving off. another great video!!!

    Glad to here you are getting into the business. It is a great industry to work in with lots of work to go around. There is a lot to learn as you are finding out. We are not just "Glorified Gardeners" as some people think. There is a level of skill needed to be successful and avoid ruining a pool. The key trick has saved me about a dozen lawsuits over the years ;). I also carry 4 million in liability insurance just in case...

    Good tip on the car keys, I have to trick myself into remembering things like that too. Great trick.

    It just protects the pump from running dry if the water level gets low. It also helps when the skimmer basket gets full of debris - the float valve will activate and suck water from the main drain in that case. When in the skimmer in a two hole skimmer (what they are designed for) it will also divert some suction so the skimner doesn't pull to much water - but that is usually not an issue. With a two hole skimmer the only way to activate the main drain is with the float valve.

    Hello MrDgvb1
    How important is it to have a skimmer valve as my skimmer does not have one and cannot seem to use my drain at the bottom of the pool?

  • @mattschenker8290

    Thanks for all the great videos etc! I know this video was posted some time back but maybe you can give me a little in site. I have a skimmer like the one in your video (hole in the front to the main drain and the back hole to the pump).
    I put a Hayward SP1070FV Float Valve Assembly, like the one you're using, the o-ring seems to fit good but when I set the float in place it doesn't necessarily stop the skimmer water from being sucked through, as an example If closed the cover on the float all the way, shouldn't it completely start drawing from the floor drain?
    Should I try a few other floats (pentair etc) till one fits tight, seals and draws from the main drain only and then remove float and adjust float cover to balance water between main and skimmer?
    Thanks alot! Matt

      The only way to test it is to block off the skimmer and see if it activates. Have you tried to fully block all the water going into the skimmer? Jus wanted to clarify that point.

      Hi. And thank for getting back to me, much appreciated!
      I do think I might have a clogged or something going on with the main drain because I put my variable speed pump to 3000 rpm and then put the float then held back the skimmer door and the water did drop but never actually sealed as it should and begin to draw from the main drain, even the pump started to starve for water as I held the gate closed.
      Does that sound right to you? and any thoughts on how to trouble shoot the main drain blockage?
      FYI: Over the years when I have had the heater on, I have noticed that the deep end is cooooold near the bottom where the main drain is as well as now with the float valve in place and opened about a pencil wide.
      Thank you again and any thoughts would be welcome ?
      Best, Matt

    I need to buy float valve Assembly, but I don't know what kind of skimmer I have. it looks like the one on this video. Is the float valve assembly the same for Pentair, Hayward and Star-rite? Thx

      +g ongkowi Look on the skimmer lid for a brand name, also the float assembly should be marked with a manufacturer. If you still have the old o-ring you can take it into a pool store so they can match it. They are all slightly different.

    We just had a pool put in but they put a cover on the second hole- should it be closed off? Also should the slide cover on the floater be open or closed? Th contractor was a shyster and left the job before it was finish so we were left to figure it out.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 лет назад

      traysea842 It depends on the skimmer type whether that second hole is plugged off or not: blog.poolcenter.com/article.aspx?articleid=6327
      As far as the float valve assembly - I think that is what you are referring to - if one hole is blocked it won't work. I wonder if he just didn't finish the main drain line in your case...

    My O-ring has never been installed. It's been missing since my pool was built. Do you know the part number for Hayward skimmer O-ring? Mine is aprox 6" in diameter. Looks identical to the one in the video. All 4 of my local pool stores are clueless. I was told that "nobody ever uses those float valves"

      This should be the part. O-ring, Float Valve (5002-21+) - SPX1070Z2 - but double check. 👍

    I have lost count of the times I have gotten to my truck and reached for my keys - and had to go back and turn off the water. Oops.

    The float valve package comes with two o-rings, one big and one small. The small one doesn't seem to fit anywhere. The big one will fit as shown in your video. However, is that secure? I can see the o-ring gets sucked into the skimmer inlet easily.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 лет назад

      It should fit securely on the bottom as it stretches out to fit in that spot.

      Are you saying stretching out the o ring of it runs a bit small is ok?

    im draining my pool thru my main drain at the deepest end of the pool. if this oring is missing can it make the pump suck in air as its doing now?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  4 года назад +1

      Yes - that will cause it to suck air.

    You have a part number for the O-Ring?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад +1

      They are listed in the comment section of this video. You can also bring the old one into a pool store if it is still there.

      Maybe try some underwater adhesive to glue it in.
