    Two tactics escorted convoys used to defend against enemy submarines was travelling at high speed and zig zagging. Submarines in those days were slow when submerged and could only stay under for a limited period and risked detection if they tried to keep up with the convoy on the surface or while submerged or if they surfaced to use their deck guns. Also the enemy destroyer could keep the submarine busy while the convoy made it's escape. Submarines were most effective if they waited near the enemy convoy's destination port but they risked greater threat of destruction due to heavy patrols in the area. Submarines ultimately proved useless when anti submarine technologies and tactics improved in the latter days of the war.

    But how would you find the ships heading at 13:15?

    • @tequila_tibbs7938

      plot targets relative bearing and distance. wait 3;15minutes, plot targets relative bearing and distance again. connect plotted points = target course and speed

    I have one question. When you get a contact report of a convoy, do you receive it in the Captain's log only? Or also in the radio message feed?
    Another thing, in the contact report, does it also give heading, speed, bearings?
    Great video!!

      Actually, I don't quite know. I will see how it works with my current campaign.
      The Wolves of Steel mod includes the Open Horizon II mod, which alters the campaign, if I'm not mistaken. The Subsim forum on that mod might give some more info.

    • @alessandropangia697
      @alessandropangia697 8 лет назад

      ThaineFurrows I asked, but nobody seemed to have an answer, I only got the latitude and longitude of the convoy, that's it.
      Also, I saw your video on the Attack Plot and I wondered, why don't you use the 90 degree approach method?

    • @ThaineFurrows
      @ThaineFurrows  8 лет назад +1

      I'm not quite sure what you refer to? You mean that I approach the target on a course perpendicular to the target course?
      I could have waited a bit longer to get a better tracking angle, but that video was just to show the basic technique of the Attack Plot.

    • @alessandropangia697
      @alessandropangia697 8 лет назад +1

      ThaineFurrows Basically the method requires finding the speed and course of the target, once that's done, you set your course perpendicular to his. Once you are on this course you set the periscope at 0 degrees, set AoB 90° port or starboard and then you just wait until the target crosses the bearing where gyroangle reads 0 :)

    • @ThaineFurrows
      @ThaineFurrows  8 лет назад

      Now I understand. That might be a good topic for another video. Do you have more info about that technique (hist references etc)?
      The scope of the Attack Plot Video was primarily on how to draw the plot without map updates and with real navigation to find out course and speed of the target.

    Thanks for the video - very informative. However, I have a question. I gave it a try with my course being 240 and contact at bearing 28 (true bearing 268). This gave me a target course of 328 and and AOB of 60. Shouldn't the target's course be 148, though? Unless the target's true bearing from the sub (268) on the Relative Bearing Disc gives you the target's course on the corresponding value of the reciprocal compass rose (in which case it is indeed 148).

    hi there. The GWX mod does not incorporate by default an attack disk. I've read old subsim threads in which attack disk was a sole separated mod. Is that the case of your attack disk? can you upload it to some file sharing source so i can download it please please please?

    • @ThaineFurrows

      Hei, I played with The Wolves of Steel 1.05 for this video. And in this mod I had the Attack Disk by default without the need to install an additional mod.

    sorry, i still dont understand why any of this needs to be used to work out these details int the game - cant i just look at the enemy ship through the periscope and see its relative position in degrees through that? dont i then just need to know the ships speed and the speed of the torpedo? can you explain more on why the attack disk is neeeded?

    • @BollocksUtwat
      @BollocksUtwat 8 лет назад +1

      Bearing is not AOB. You need to compute the AOB from the bearing and course.

    • @Maxtorym

      Still dont know what target course is.

    • @DarkNog
      @DarkNog 5 лет назад

      @@Maxtorym Target course is just its direction of travel. In this case, the target is travelling on a course of 60 degrees, meaning he is travelling ENE.

    • @ThaineFurrows
      @ThaineFurrows  6 лет назад

      Hei Shrasian, there's a couple of methods one can use. For one you could guess. Or you take the info given to you by contact reports. I most often use the attack plot method, on which I made a video as well.

    • @DarkNog

      Use marks on the map.
      Take a bearing and range the target. Mark the position on the map. Start the chronometer.
      3 minutes 15 seconds later, get the bearing of the target and its range again. Mark these on the map.
      Draw a line between the two points. That will be the target's *course*.
      Bonus: If you waited 3 minutes and 15 seconds to do this, the distance between your two marks will also indicate the target's speed. If the target moved 500m, then they are travelling at 5knots. If they moved 1200m, then they are travelling at 12knots etc.

      In this example as far as I understood and what I could read:
      relative bearing disc forward = 180 always
      you check your course = 315 and bring the compass disc with 315 on the exact position as 180 of the outer disc.
      watch guard is reporting for example: "ship sighted at bearing 285!"
      285 bearing is always left from you, so you bring the inner disc to 285 on your right side of your compass disc (thats the reason why its reversed).
      You can read 60° there, what is the true course of this ship.
      Think this works only for ships which are would cross your course.

      Not sure if you've figured it out yet or not but figured i'd answer just incase you were still looking. When you install The Wolves of Steel mod, you can find the handbook he linked in the "The Wolves of Steel - Documentation" folder in your Silent Hunter 5 install directory. It will be in the "ingame Targeting and Navigation" folder. Should be the first .pdf listed. Failing that I'm sure it's under the SH5 sections of the subsim forums.

    yeah, you talk about using regular or inverted BUT YOU DON'T SAY WHY ON EARTH WE WOULD WANT TO USE INVERTED AND DO ALL THESE THINGS TO FIND OUT INFORMATION WE CAN FIND OUT IN A MUCH MORE STRAIGHT FORWARD WAY
