In 1981 when I was in Chennai for my studies, every week end I used to come to National Lodge for lunch all the way from Royapettai. Still cherish those delicacies. My best wishes to the management.

no matter how many biriyanis you eat some times your heart wants something traditional and authentic. me and family had visited this hotel we waited for half an hour and some how we got seats to sit i believe we are lucky to have meals there have to start with the powder and ghee my god super taste food chutneys kootu sambar rasam curd appalam one should eat the food than realise how authentic and tasty the food is i believe every one must visit this hotel when ever they visit sowcarpet. lovely and gracious serving people they will make you eat more by seving good quantity of rice you will not regret. guys please go visit.
My mother eat in that time one meal rs 10 my grandfather eat 2 rs I eat one meal 20 rs now my daughter also eat this food now one meal 120 so 4 generation our favourite hotel

This is worst hotel I visited with my parents. Since my mom was asking since long time about a hotel that they had meals when they were newly married it was too good. But they didn't remember the name, with the details they mentioned, I found out this was the hotel my mom was asking for and had taken them there, but we had the very worst experience. Price too high but food quality and variety not up to the level. Later I got to know from my hubby that the same hotel has its other branch and there is no waiting time, nor mess, it's really clean and much variety is served in terms of sides. Hope they improvise this outlet as well. But this outlet experience was very pathetic. I felt like vomiting after having here.

In my first job I worked in tambu chetty street and our auditors were in Govindappa naiken street. So when ever we finish meeting the auditor, next step was in National lodge.. Yummy food, Andra style.. God bless the owners , Various staff Cook and Management

Nice video letting the owners and the people of the place(Staff and Customers) speak ,instead of the anchors hogging the show .Few Important aspects:Food is unlimited ,a rarity in Chennai...it is really unlimited ,the waiters serving without any hesitation unlike the methods adopted in some places.There is a public address system for the owners,to speak to the pantry and serving staff.

We lived in George Town and I studied in SKPD Boys' High School located a few buildings away and passes SSLC in 1965. My family being traditional used to avoid hotels but National Bhavan was was OK. Glad you see this hotel in good nick particularly one of the boys who was relative to the then owners was my class mate in the High School. Sometimes he used to take us to the hotel in the evenings and get us glass of buttermilk. We used to marvel at his authority and power in getting us free butter milk. In later years we moved out of city and could not be in touch. Subbarayudu Garu, how are you?

Wow nostalgia for someone who is not in Chennai anymore, have been there at least once a month from 2000 to 2008.Mr.Dwarak was the person who explained to me about the powder paruppu ghee combination, even remember the time he literally forced me to eat a lot saying you are paying so eat happily and go.Great place exemplary hospitality, I am sure I will go there with my kids.Wish good luck to the fabulous National lodge.

Highly recommended restaurant , serving AUTHENTIC ANDHRA MEALS , the very best in Chennai , though in a rustic environment.
I wish they would open a branch in Kolkata where I stay, but when I spoke to the owner, he said he has no such plans .

I'm from Nellore, famous for tasty food and hospitality. Whenever we go to Chennai, we're sure to go to National Lodge where we get such tasty food as in Nellore.
Reminds me of my stay in Royapettah during 60s/70s era. Wonderful and economical meals at many of these eateries.

Hi I remember this mess hotel. I came with my father who a general physician when I was 10 years in 1980s and still that chutney power and ghee rice that rasam and avwal not forgotten. I miss these food in UK. I miss this environment ...the people and the food in deed!

It's been 28 years i completed by ICWA, during that time from Kadapa Andhra Pradesh, we used to visit Chennai to buy books and writing exams, We could only afford stay at National Lodge, what ever we do in the morning, we never used to miss Veg lunch at National Lodge.
Most interesting thing is during those times a person used stand in the middle of hotel and announcing how to mix powder, ghee and gongura with rice. It was some thing different we could see at any hotel. Very traditional.

In the year 1963 self was working in a factory and I stayed along with one Baburao at nandhanam in the housing board bachelor's quarters. On sunday night we used to visit one hotel brindavan, a Andra hotel just behind the then rajakumari theatre. I think the street name was jagadhambal street but I MAY be wrong. Babu Rao was a non veg and I being a veg. There used to be thelugu cinema people in good numbers and I did not lnow any of them as seeing cinema is not my habit. Only person zi could recognice was G.varalakshmi then famous heroine. The veg food was nice with parippu podi, gongura chutney etc. They also served one plusu. That too was nice. This happened 60 years ago and I do not know whether that hotel is existing now as after serving for more than 30 years in North Idia and now settled at tiruchi .
Whenever I go to Madras/Chennai on duty I used to have meals in National Lodge. I have worked in railways as TTE based in Bengaluru, now retired. For the first time I came to this hotel along with my father may be in 1974 or 75. Most of the railway staffs who work in trains used to come to this hotel for food and go out with ultimate satisfaction. There used to be a big queue waiting for food, even then people used to prefer this hotel due to the quality of food. I also told that the cinema people also were taking meals from this hotel. I saw very huge meals carriers used to go for them. I really mis this food for many years.

Wow ! Thanks for refreshing my memory... I used to eat lunch every workday at their Mount road branch during 2006 - 07. My office colleagues and I used to be the first batch most of the days. Dal podi, ghee and final buttermilk are utterly delicious..all unlimited..eat and sleep:)

As shown here Tamilnadu, even I saw in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc., and In Bengaluru alone almost 60-70% food providers r from Andhra only.. There z no doubt to say Andhra food z one of the most tastiest food in the world..

I used to eat here in 1976 onwards....till I left in 90S.
If I remember correctly, the meals was just five rupees then when I came first .
I had visited you during sixtees as a bachelor and given a token number and called through a mic. Independent table with clean banana leaf. Long live.

MY office was in G.N.Street, then shifted in 1968 to A.N.Street(Audiappa) but I used to take food from here almost daily!
Then there are 3 other hotels which were rushy in HIGH COURT area. Ambi's Cafe, in Broadway entrance from esplanade, Modern cafe just in front of the court gate, NSCB road, and another one from Dasaprakash Group, in Thambu chetty street, entrance on Parrys corner.
In 1965 -68 in all 3 Veggie hotels, RS 25 was for 30 tickets for Lunch(dinner)Meals and Rs. 30 for 30 tickets with CURD. Which makes an excellent "MADHWA TYPE" veggie lunch for less than RE. ONE! But ICE water one Galss was Np.10, proportionately too much, as Tea or coffee in Dowra set was just 10/12 Paise!! Like Triplicane Parrys corner was a HUB of food for floating population, before the concept of RESTAURANTS really caught up starting in Armenian street-Palimar in 1970s! (NonVEG restaurants were near Beach station/Manndy side! Love from Toronto!

Excellent Authentic Andhra Meals!!If you buy one parcel four people can eat happily. Only problem is that it's very crowded and can't keep a vehicle outside due to heavy traffic. National Lodge became very famous because it's in whole sale crowded area.

In 1978 meal cost was Rs.2/- Ofcourse I had it.
Sir it was 2.75 in 1976 itself. They had a big bag of 25 paise coins to return the change correctly. I was a student then and visited this great hotel almost everyday. Later when I got married I took my wife here but she did not like the place as it was not very clean. Hygiene was lacking in those days. Perhaps it has improved now.

Even we are the 4th gen based out of Bangalore. Decade's ago as he said, food used to be in a rupee. For business, we frequently travel to Chennai and we try to eat atleast a meal in hear from 5 decade's.
