Bought my Newell P454-F back in 84, when I was living in Orange County. Spooled it with 40 pound test, it was and still is a good reel. I live in Wyoming now, so not much use for it. I should sell it, but just cant bring myself to do it. Its in great shape. Oh and I had it on a 5.5 foot Kunnan Casting rod.
I still own a Newell 550 here on Guam and Very rarely did I service it but it still cast like a dream. It makes a little more noise when casting because of my lazy ass but it still does the job. After watching this clip I’m now thinking, should I put it up for sale and get 3-4 newer more modern reels for the price I would sell it? Or keep it and fish the crap out of it till it finally says🙅🏻♂️........thoughts?
Hurricane galvan a little late on the reply but it’s probably due for a servicing. The drag washers could be worn down. If you need help just message me. Pretty easy to do.
It’s a great reel, just a whole different animal. It’s not compatible with the 113H series unfortunately, so they’re not compatible with any Newell upgrades.
Sitting here with my G332-F. I’ve owned for over 30 years in great condition. I sure love this reel,
I think Newells are still popular here in Southern California because of sentimental reasons, among the ones that you mentioned.
Thanks for this! I just found a mint S533-5.5 in my garage...time to spool this bad boy up and hit the tuna boats
They are both good reels...Newell is a great choice for beginners as well as advanced.
I use new penns, old penns and Newell's for surfcasting and I like all of them

Let me know when you want to sell it.
@@JayJay-cx5te Would you want the rod and reel, or just the reel?
@@longrider42 just the reel
Great vid! I bet you did this on take#1!
Always trust a guy with a beard like that... Wise words 🙏🏼🧙🏻♂️
Master Roshi-esque lol

My 540 5.5 drag finally wore out.☹️ Hopefully I can find someone who can fix it. It was my workhorse. I never went on a trip with out it.
I have a brand new Newell 641-3.I live in San Diego.
Thank you sir, for the info.
Market price jus went sky rockets lol.
Good explanation Bill! 🤙🏼
Drag is weak on my Newell. Do I need to upgrade the drag system?

Shibbi Shibbi thanks for the reply. I upgraded to a 5+ 1 drag system and feels like my avet. Old washers were buttery smooth 😂.
Should I sell my newells and buy toriums?
No but you should buy Talicas
Can you give me info on the j338-g reel?
I have an old jigmaster 500 and on the side where the handle is there is a knob that says lift turn. Would you know what that is for?
That’s to remove the side plate so you can swap out the spool, convenient if you have several spools with different types of line.
Down here in New York most of the party fishermen use them or sidewinders.
Did you ever post a video explaining the letters?
where can u buy a newell reel? for cheap
They just sold a bunch of them at a fund raiser last Saturday at Seaforth Sportfishing Landing.
How expensive? Say for a G-454-F in good shape.
I've bought my first Newell in 76 I've owned about 15 of them not a reel for tuna fishing drags get smoked I'm going to find them all and sell them
I’d be interested
No love for the "wide" version of the Penn U.S. Senator [US113W]?
It’s a great reel, just a whole different animal. It’s not compatible with the 113H series unfortunately, so they’re not compatible with any Newell upgrades.
@@HiFishGear It could be argued that it does not need Newell parts; the upgrades are already on it.
Hi there quick question what would be your go-to knot to tie 30 lb braid to 30 lb braid
Albright “Alberto” knot
Would anybody know the max drag on any newell size?
24ish with carbon washers.
@@carllarsen6234 thanks! Thought they were a bit stronger.
Someone in hawaii should manufacture newells. Buy the patent. Made in china!
Sooooo get a Newell or a Penn Fathom 2?😅🤙
Fathom II all day!
Its pronounced new-uhl.
Rad video. I have a 338.
These reels dont compare to modern Shimano, Daiwa, and even Penn reels. Its like comparing a 67 Mustang with a Ferrari
Someone tried buying mine off me the other day
Manufacture target, served a purpose, but failed to achieve the next level....cant tell you how many I seen exploded on the west coast.
Penn is best
