To me, late 80's Savatage is where the entire Symphonic Metal movement began. Bands like Nightwish, Therion, and Epica don't happen without Savatage.

"Rock Theater" is not far off. Jon Oliva, the lead singer/keyboardist, lost his brother Chris (lead guitarist) in the early 90's when his car was hit by a drunk driver. A couple of years later, he became one of the co-founders of Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I’ve always enjoyed this song, ever since it came out. It is one of my warm-up songs on keyboard, it is always an interesting challenge to try to get the hesitation on the piano part at the beginning to sound natural, rather than a kind of forced playing out of time.

You didn't write it so logically you can't reproduce it. That's the beauty of originals. Great song and composer btw

These guys were a big part of the soundtrack of my 1980s. Definitely hear precursors to TSO here. I started writing this before you got into reading about them and everything I was going to write you ended up saying, lol. They were definitely heavier before this, with their own style to it. Very distinctive riffs and vocals for the 80s. Sadly, the guitarist--singer's brother--died in a car crash a few years after this album. I think Streets is the last one he is on, but not 100% sure.

Edge of Thorns is the last album which Criss Oliva is on. Still, all these years later, it breaks my heart that such a talent was taken from us. It breaks my heart anytime someone is prematurely taken from us. Especially by a drunk driver

Savatage effing rules! I love their whole catalog. Favorites albums are Streets, Dead Winter Dead, and The Wake of Magellan. You should re-listen to DWD Justin, that album is a masterpiece. BTW, Jon Oliva credits Geddy Lee and early Rush with inspiring his high end shrieking range. RIP Paul O'Neill and Criss Oliva.

Savatage! This one reminds me of a heavier Jim Steinman with the piano intro and the epic, over the top theatricality.

Their previous album to this, Hall Of The Mountain King, had a slight bit of theatrical-ness to it. But this album Gutter Ballet went full out.
Also check out the related band Circle II Circle, Savatage singer Zach Stevens band after he left Savatage. CIIC first album sounds very Savatage-esque, not surprisingly as most of the songs were wrote/co-wrote/arrainged by Jon Oliva (the singer here).

Is it just me or does it sound like Jack Black is singing with Trans-Siberian orchestra? Lol! I mean don't get me wrong I really like it but it's really reminiscent of Jack Black and the vocal stylings
