Yes, Lester is a real worm. He didn't know that Malvo was in his office, but he knew it was a real possibility and didn't mind sacrificing his wife, so he could escape.
That "this is tremendous work, deputy" IN FRONT OF Bill is so gosh darn satisfying. One of the most satisfying moments on TV in the last two decades at the very least.
I love the detail of those bloodstains behind malvo forming almost like wings. Like he’s the devil. He also says he hasn’t pie this good since the garden of Eden. There’s a lot of references to the devil with malvo in this show
Honestly there are a lot of details alluding to the devilish, almost supernatural nature of Malvo. I don’t think he’s literally devil, but the writers clearly want us to view him as such. The main detail for me is his corrupting influence. He isn’t satisfied with simply committing evil acts whether for money or pleasure, he actively tries to corrupt other people, push them to their darker side so to speak.
Yep, that Lester makes the William H. Macy character in the movie of same name less memorable while Billy Bob Thornton became the most memorable killer before Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men. Also, you guys should check out not only Sling Blade in which Billy Bob Thornton wrote, directed and starred in but check out A Family Thing (1996) which he wrote in which starred Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones as brothers and The Apostle in which Robert Duvall wrote, starred and directed in with Thornton putting in a small but memorable appearance in. And congrats for the new family member.
The sepia color palette and ominous presentation of the hotel are references to the Coen brothers' film "Barton Fink". So many great little touches like that throughout this entire series. So much go be gained by watching all their films and then rewatching the series.
The series does tributes to the Coen Brothers' films and has some actors, like Stephen Root ("O Brother Where Art Thou", "No Country For Old Men") from them appear.
The shots of the empty hallways in the Las Vegas hotel slightly mirror the empty hallways of the Hotel Earle in The Coen Brothers’ Barton Fink (1991), an enigmatic, darkly comic, genuinely unnerving gem of a film that you two should definitely watch.
"...tremendous work!" When you said you were starting this show, so many split-second moments flashed in my head and then the last one just slowed to play out that glorious payoff moment, lol... I have been waiting painful weeeeeks, lol, for you to get to that! SOOO good. Molly rules. While she did win the Critic's Choice award, Allison Tolman was definitely robbed of an Emmy and Golden Globe. Bob Odenkirk's performance is also a thing of beauty, and so effortless it was just as painful to watch. 😂
31:31 even if the hotel people couldn't tell from the cameras which guests were in the elevator it'd be pretty easy to see who checked out in the middle of the night or missed their checkout the next day
Fully agree about Lester. Such a cowardly, weaselly snake in the grass. I think the thing that makes him more infuriating than Malvo is that he is willing to throw anyone under the bus, even the people closest to him. His brother, both his wives, his nephew, Malvo himself, Sam Hess's widow.. There is no low that Lester won't sink to.
At least most of these were horrible people, e.g. his abusive wife, the "sometimes I tell people you're dead" brother, the entire Hess family, etc. That doesn't mean they deserved death or getting their life ruined, but it makes it easier to excuse Lester for some of his horrible decisions. I still had a little bit of sympathy left for Lester by the time he decided to send poor Linda to her death in this episode. Finally, that was the dealbreaker for me - now I was cheering for Lorne to hunt down his sorry ass. I don't think we ever saw anything negative about Linda in the series, so I consider her the first, actually truly good person to fall victim to Lester. All the other innocent victims before like the Sheriff or the ones in the elevator weren't killed by Lester nor did he ever intend to harm them - they were "accidents". Sending in Linda with that specific coat with the hood on - yeah, that's deliberate. He didn't care at all whether she lived or died. F*** him.
“I think the thing that makes him more infuriating than Malvo is that he is willing to throw anyone under the bus” he says under the episode where malvo killed his wife for like no reason.
This show is so beautifully written. I guess you guys know that Noah Hawley is currently working on the "Alien" TV series. You should definitely put that on the reaction list for next year.
I'm not getting my hopes up too high for the Alien series, even though Noah did such extraordinary writing and character development for Fargo. ALIEN is suffering from over exposure I think. Its been done to death by many people who's heart wasn't in it but the money was their primary motivation. Fargo was ripe for a continuation of the storyline and hadn't had near the media exposure that Alien has had for decades now.
There are a lot of cruel deaths in this series, but the death of the wife in the elevator has to be the cruelest. Lorne killed her last, whilst making sure she had time to process what was happening before doing so. Her final moments are incredibly cruel. Lorne is an incredible villain. Truly the devil.
Yeah, always felt so bad about her. She wasn't even connected to the witness protection job he was working on - she was just part of his "undercover" identity.
If you notice Lester only purchased 1 one way ticket to Acapulco so his intentions were always to "sacrifice" his wife in attempting to make his getaway. Awesome series, awesome reactions!
As much as I love seeing your reactions to season 1, I can't wait for season 2! The second season is my favorite single season of any TV show ever. I really hope you react to all 4 seasons (and eventually 5).
As great and refreshing as Season 1 is,believe me when I say Season 2 is even better! Great reactions! Congratulations on the baby. You're lives are now forever changed.

I really like your comments, you are super attentive to the smallest details of the story and giving this masterpiece all the love it deserves. The best TV series ever, tied with Breaking Bad and Beter Call Saul in my opinion. Lorne is sly like a fox, Lester is cowardly like a rabbit...so I guess Lester's new wife is the cabbage. So... THAT'S how the rabbit avoids getting eaten by the fox...use a red coat. 😳
I’ve seen hundreds of movies and tv episodes. The end when Lester sends his wife in is easily top 10 on screen moments ever for me. I could not believe it when I first saw it.
Lester was someone who was turned into a piece of trash. He was dumped on his whole life until he snapped and basically him getting away with it all caused a massive overcorrection. He went from prey to predator. Malvo... alpha predator. Chaos incarnate. They should have cast Billy Bob Thornton as the Joker after seeing his performance in this.
Billy Bob is phenomenal in this. Lorne Malvo is up there with Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men as one of the greatest villains in cinema history.
Season 2 of Fargo is an amazing showcase of writing, direction, screenwriting, acting. But Malvo is one of my favorite villains from any tv/movie series. Except for LEGION(the series written/directed/ect as Fargo) Noah Hawley knows how to make an amazing tv series. I can’t wait to see what he is cooking up For the alien anthology. Please please please don’t pass up on the gym. It’s such a mind blowing series. It has the best pilot episode of anything I’ve ever watched.
That tape at the start is just checking to see if teeth are making contact so they can try to shave off some more of a dental implant or something like that. Makes sure there isn't bad rubbing.
I absolutely love Fargo season 1,....but ..season two is my favorite....man the action in it is great, and the story line and the characters are awesome 😎
Lester can't handle Malvo's existence, because it reminds him that he's a coward and a liar. He wasn't able to change his life without the crime, even though literally all he had to do was just divorce his wife, which she clearly wanted anyway, and he could have done the same thing legitimately.
“Lester could have walked away.” Really? You think so? Even though Lorne never said anything like “If you walk away, I will not hurt you,” you think you can trust him not to come after Lester if Lester walks away in Vegas? There are two ways to deal with Lorne: 1) Don’t attract his attention; be so insignificant or unimportant to him that you don’t warrant his attention. 2) Maintain the initiative so that he is reacting to you instead of planning against you. The second option isn’t likely to work beyond your next elevator ride, but once you have attracted Lorne’s attention, you don’t really have another option other than to run fast. Your new wife may not survive that. Anything else, and Lorne might kill you. Or he might not. But it won’t be your choice.
There is a large river on the NE corner of what would in the future become Kansas that was occupied by the Kanza tribe of Native Americans. When the explorers came, they named it the Kansas river after them. As it was a large river not easily forded, ferries shepherded people back and forth across to both sides. A town built up on both sides of the river to cater to people crossing, and that was called Kansas City for the river. The eventual state would use the shape of the river as part of the NE border and decided to take its state name from the Kanza tribe. So the town was called Kansas City before there was a state called Kansas, because the city name was derived from the river. Then they happened to split the city in 2 when drawing the lines, probably so both states had access to the river. Access to waterways was a huge concern when states were lobbying to set their state boundaries.
It does not mean malvo was going to go on a killing spree just cause he killed them in front of Lester he was just teaching Lester a lesson and cause he interputed his bounty that he was trying to get
This is the solution to 'A Fox, a Rabbit, and a Cabbage' riddle. Take the rabbit across the river first and leave it on the other side. Return alone to the original side of the river. Take the fox across the river, and on the other side, leave the fox and take the rabbit with you, leaving the fox on the other side. Return to the original side with the rabbit. And finally, take the cabbage across the river.

6:59 I always liked Billy Bob Thornton a lot, but this performance got him ranked in my top actors list (a meaningless accolade to be sure, but it's better than nothing).
That’s what I like about this episode and the previous one. He may be incompetent and in over his head as a police chief, but he actually does have a good heart.
I think its pretty split between who prefers S1 or S2, but both are brilliantly written. I prefer S1 more mainly due to its characters. In particular the unflinching moral center Molly (underestimated but usaually the sharpest person in the room), the malevolent, supernatural force of nature Malvo, and the amazing ttansformational arc of Lester's character throughout the season. I think. S2 is fantastic and more cinematic in overall scale, but S1 feels more like a direct descendant of the original film for me. Noah Hawley is a master storyteller in his own right.
Idk I have a hard time calling people cowardly for literally preserving their own lives and freedom. It’s self serving but just common sense and the optimal move if you want to keep living. Like would you really say “coward not voluntarily living his life in a cage”.
Seeing Lester use his wife as a doomed decoy was a sleazy move! Jemma, Malvo’s fiancé, was beautiful and drop dead gorgeous. Just sorry Billy Bob had her drop dead in that elevator. That scene was a shocker!
I might watch the 2nd season "with you" (that is to say I'll watch it then watch your reaction), as I never got round to it. You should watch Mare of Easttown
Season 4 is solid gold
FARGO season 2 is masterpiece
I love that Lorne just loves messing with peoples lives even in the most petty way because he’s completely crazy I’m sure bounty hunting isn’t even about the money for him
Yeah, he loves to cause chaos. Like when he tricked the young guy into pissing in his moms gas tank, and then told the mom while he was doing it.
I wouldn't say season 2 is better, they are both just so good...for me Malvo is the best bad guy from both seasons but other parts of season 2 ate better.
Loved season 3. Only season I watched twice.
David Thewlis was terrifying in that season!
