  • When we tell people to live within their means it's actually kind of cruel. No one is asking why quality things are out of people's means in the first place. My "bad" financial advice is to live your life. Live your life with joy. Be wise, but trust yourself and trust that you deserve joy.

It's like a narcissistic family. The toxic parents places all the children into certain roles causing dysfunction and chaos in the entire family, pitting everyone against each other. Now instead of getting to the root of the problem, all the siblings blame each other and have hate towards one another. Meanwhile the puppetmasters (the parents) sit back and laugh enjoying the destructions that they created in the first place.

Then came the popularity of "The Food Network" showing fifty different ways to make chicken wings for parties and tailgating. All of a sudden the price of chicken wings skyrocketed and I have never seen them cheap again. I am so tired of people, especially black people, reducing those who rent to ‘throwing money away’ and creating this ‘I am savvy with money because I have a house and you’re not because you’re still renting.’ If you have a roof over your head you’re not throwing money away. Also, if home ownership is the key to wealth, why wasn’t my grandfather and grandmother wealthy? Why aren’t my family members wealthy? They all owned or own homes- where is all of this wealth that homeownership provides?
Listen, I am a homeowner myself so I am not against it, I am just against this debate about renting vs buying especially amongst African Americans.

Not just that, but every1 doesn't want the responsibility of home ownership, nor does every1 necessarily live n 1 location all of their life. Selling a home is not always as easy as people think. Buying a home is not as affordable n many places as it once was. Most places where homes r under $200K, the average working person doesn't want 2 live. I agree and don't at the same time. Overall, I believe "living within your means" is GENERALLY a good idea but I absolutely believe it is more difficult to do so when you are poor. Finding general statements that apply to everyone is the problem here like telling everyone to go to college when most people don't have any idea what to do in school.
The people that really need to hear "live within your means" are those who only find joy in expensive things and what others have. Like, why can't we enjoy a walk through the park with each other and live in the moment? Those people need to (not be sad) change their mindset and experience joy from other sources.

I'm going to approach this in good fate and just say that some of you significantly underestimate how the intersection of so many forms of systemic oppression in this country harms people. When you talk about people needing to change their mindset and experience joy from other sources, what you are not acknowledging is the fact that having to do this in and of itself is dehumanizing. Why do I need to make my life smaller when somebody else's is boundless with greed ? Asking people to create personal solutions to systemic problems that continue to grow and expand means that they will forever have to continue to adapt to horrible situations. Prescribing personal solutions to systemic issues is not a solution.

@@papertape7911 I was going to edit my original to specify these but I said nothing wrong. What I said may have been taken personal, almost as an attack, rather than as I said it and I'm sorry for not finding the right words for better share my point.
      1) Just because I didn't say it, doesn't mean I missed it. She gave perfect examples of the systematic issues around poverty. From buying a used car that required immediate maintenance to buying cheap foods that cause health issues later. There's no reason to reiterate what she already said. I'm a black man from Baltimore City, I'm more well off now than most, but I know this well enough without any more. The only points I cared to share in the moment were the ones mentioned.
      2) I'm speaking about a very specific group of people, not all poor people. And I initially pointed out GENERALITIES ARE DIFFICULT. Those who ONLY find joy in [what I would consider somewhat] destructive behavior are my target. Changing the 'only' in that statement is my true point.
      3) Dehumanizing is the wrong word. I'd never say to remove your joy/personality/sense of self/etc. (which is dehumanizing). I'm saying EXPAND these. If being poor means you can't expand yourself, experiences and perspectives, you are dehumanizing poor people.
      4) Did I say a change in mindset would be easy? No. Most men still can't seek therapy. Changing your mindset to experience joy/love/peace differently is definitely difficult. However, we continue to tell men to go to therapy, so I continue to believe that SOME people should look at other avenues for joy, especially if they already are struggling to survive. This would only benefit them because they could experience that joy more frequently if there is no price-tag. And if they become millionaires, they still can enjoy the same joy the exact same way.
      5) Prescribing a non-solution to a systematic issue is worse than a personal solution. I've learned to accept and change things that I can in the moment until the [systemic or not] issue itself can be resolved. That's what I learned in therapy at least. Unless I should stop going to therapy now...

I absolutely disliked the idea of only paying off debt without saving anything else over a $1,000 until all of the debt is paid off. If I paid off all of my debt and threw all of my extra savings towards that and an emergency happens immediately after I pay it off, I'd be forced to go back into debt if the emergency cost more than $1,000! I dislike how rigid the steps are.
I tried so hard to pay off debt and throw large lump sums at my debt, but life proved to be too unpredictable for me to over-generalize my budget. The amount of pocket watching I experience is excruciating and unbearable and it's literally blatant classism and victim blaming when it comes to being poor and "creating savings." Supposedly, it should be easier for me to budget because I have Medicaid, no utility bills, and food stamps which is barely enough to cover groceries for two weeks because of how expensive groceries are in my state and country.
I can't even be honest with them about my budgeting because I'm simply trying to maintain my sanity and happiness by using my last monies to buy fast food because buying two biggie bags for $14 dollars everyday and using Instacart in a food dessert is the highest form of luxury and ease I could afford. My food stamps doesn't last me the month and because I live in a food dessert, there are more fast food restaurants at every corner than actual grocery stores in rare walkable distance that have monopoly on high prices because there are no competitors around. It HURTS. IT HURTS SO BAD.
And the only reason I am not allowed to get my own apartment is because I "don't budget well" even though I pay my fucking rent on time and they get their fucking money every goddamn month. I don't cook because I was never taught how due to my mom having to work so much during my childhood and not having the spare time or energy to teach me how she did, IT IS A WASTE TO MAKE MEALS THAT CAN ONLY BE LEARNED AND MASTERED THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR WHEN I BARELY HAVE ENOUGH FOOD STAMPS TO AFFORD TO MAKE THOSE MISTAKES. YES, it is easier to eat fast food instead of spending hours at a stove just to make some shit I don't like. And they simply interpret this as lazy. I HAVE FAUGHT TOOTH AND FUCKING NAIL TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE RESOURCES I HAVE THAT WERE FORTUNATELY ATTAINABLE BECAUSE OF MY PRIVILEE. I DON'T LACK DISCIPILINE, I'M FUCKKKKING POOOOOOOOOOOOR.
I'm GRATEFUL, but I shouldn't have to be thankful for something I need to survive as a human being with physical needs in a physical reality that requires physical materials for me to maintain the functionality of my body without experiencing chronic hunger and being exposed to violence in emergency homeless shelters.
And the most fucked up thing is that they don't pay case managers and social workers enough money to afford to live in this state/country, but work them like dogs while forcing them to shame people who are in the exact same predicament. One case manager I had was living in a homeless shelter herself, but she made too much money to qualify for public assistance but not enough to afford her own apartment for her and her baby...

@@zipitzizzy2442wow wow wow! I'm soo sorry you are enduring this horrific treatment. It's so many layers and levels involved with this homeless system. I hate it. Also they have one case mgr to many people who need help and the CM is overwhelmed with so many tasks and issues within issues with requirements and also people who battle MH issues along with physical ailments, SA and more and the biggestis Economic Oppression! It was a horrible experience and the system is and continues to be rigged!!! Also they love to have BW in positions like this to deal with all of these problems. It also depressed me to see so many BM, families, veterans and women homeless/houseless. 😢

They look at us and tell us to rack up debt to get an education and can’t truly make a living off said degree. So many quotables

Nurses & doctors are poor in the Western world.
In the UK the NURSES who SAVED so many people during COVID watched people DIE are going to food banks & can’t afford to live or EAT.
A police investigator told me she can’t even afford the new apple headphones on her salary all while telling me that the reason why a SERGEANT who was assigned on my case abused me is because he’s overworked because there are 10 people in their team when there should be 30.
as a victim because the police are overworked, stressed & theres no funding I decided not to go through justice system. It was cruel. scarcity isn’t just money it’s affect every part of life. The medical field, housing.
IM A HUMAN WHY DO I HAVE TO QUALIFY FOR HOUSING.
why are people the dictator on who deserves resources or housing. my heart is grieved. I hate life.
& that’s why I am pivoting to a better career & out of the West.

You are so correct.....we really don't own anything. We live in a debt economy and the only way to live is to be in debt; and yet, we have no job security....in this system, I feel that living is just precarious. The system tries to shame us, but we are just being gaslight....so that we don't question the grift economy.

This video needs to go viral! I’m new to your channel but definitely subscribed with the quickness! You spoke so many facts it wasn’t funny. You said out loud so many things I’ve been thinking forever. I’m upset that they’re getting rich selling us things that The Most High gave us freely…land, air, water, fruits, vegetables, etc!! I’ve honestly wondered why we as citizens of this nation have not come together and challenge our government a long time ago! They do not care about us; yes Kanye was right!!
By the way, has anyone ever told you that you could pass for Tiger Wood’s sister 🙂

You dont save your way to wealth, you invest your way to wealth. If it starts with $1, then start with $1.
You do that by living within your means. If your means are meager, thats a sign to plan for a better future. Get a trade, get trained and find a better job. Get a side hustle. Its up to you. You can live within your means if your already broke and struggling, thats your first hurdle to overcome.
I know the struggle, i was poor for ever and im barely overcoming that cause i decided to get a trade and train for a better job, next ill start investing my $1. Its only in my hands. Change what you can control, and dont waste energy on blame.
