An Unexpected Surprise: Pristine Stamp Mill, Headframe and Heavy Machinery

  • Even though I didn't get any underground time, this was still a great explore considering all the machinery and wooden structures I found on the surface. The main commodity at these mines was gold. I don't believe these mines were too successful, but with all the big infrastructure I'm not too sure. I still can't believe the 4 stamp mill is in such great shape considering it's 120 or so years old! All the stamps, ore feeders, gears, camstamp and wood wheels seem to be intact and ready for operation. Along with the stamp mill, there was the wooden headframe, Imperial Type 11 Compressor and even hoist/hit and miss engine to see. If you enjoy seeing old machinery, this is the video for you! Hope you guys enjoy this one, and as always thanks for watching.

    It's a shame that the government has the money to waste on keeping people out of abandoned mines and no money to restore a beautiful stamp mill to its former glory! Excellent find!

      Many mines are still owned by companies, people, and so forth that using tax dollars would be illegal to preserve. Most families will not sell old mine claims hoping for "the big one".

    This looks alot like Nevada terrain. It's so dry and arid but well preserved. If you explore California, there a ton of accessible mines to check out. As you get closer to June most will be free of snow too. I explore these types of sites for discarded beer cans. Finding a completely rusted can and cleaning them reveals quite a bit of history about the site where they were discovered. Keep up the great work.

    Fairbanks -Morse was known for some of the biggest of the early oil and diesel engines, but I didn't know till just now that they also built some of the ore stamps, all four of which do have their data plates. You are improving with every new video, thanks for the explore, and it's not your fault the the Bureau of Land Mismanagement beat you to these mines, at least you got some great equipment studies in. God Bless and stay safe.

  • @TomandJulieMineExploring

    Good finds, Jerith. Very nice mill. Those ore feed systems are pretty sophisticated to keep each stamp fed with the right amount of ore for the mill to run efficiently. I didn't get a good look at what powered the hoist. Hit and miss engines will have a spark plug, or other igniter, and a water tank, or some kind of cooling system, plus a fuel mixing valve. Some hoists are run on compressed air and will have a cyclinder that looks similar to a hit and miss. The "sand" in the leach tanks are tailings. That's how fine the mill crushes the rocks. Did you say there was a jaw crusher nearby? Usually a jaw crusher will take the ore down to a size that the stamp can handle. Thanks for the nice tour!

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  3 года назад +1

      Hey Tom! Those automatic ore feeders were super cool to see first I've seen of those. I believe someone said that the hoist is powered by a Fairbanks Morse 15 horsepower engine. Can't confirm or deny that. And then I was referring to some jaw crushers I seen over in San Diego that I found with the Joshua Hendy mark on them. I didn't see any jaw crushers at this site. Thanks alot for watching!

      @@WesternMineDetective A 15HP Fairbanks Morse hit and miss is huge in physical size. Have you seen my video of a 15Hp Fairbanks? You might want to take a look at it just to see the size of that engine so you know how big they are for future reference. The man in my video is Ron Morefield and works at the Law's Museum. Very cool place. I have three videos with him explaining engines.
      I have a 1-1/2HP hit and miss that I bought in Barstow a few years ago. It was sold under the Montgomery Ward's label, but it made by Sattley.

    What a great find. It would be a great project to get the stamp ,ill and the hoist /make and break engine working. they don't appear to be to far gone. As a graduate of mining school I am always interested in old mining equipment. In Ontario Canada we had an old gold mine that had a twenty stamp mill. It stopped operating in the 20's a nd was destroyed in a fire. The mine was called " The Ore Chimmney" .Thanks for the vid.

    After I watch you finding equipment, I spend ages looking at Patents and images of old machines, thanks for finding the advert of the Ore Feeder. To compare the weight of that feeder, it would be the weight of a of a commercial lawn tractor with a 54" deck. Amazes me that the equipment gets down in a mine, Deep down and put in place. I can only imagine they are assembled together like Ikea furniture. And then to get to the mine site on a flatbed truck with wooden spoked tires over land with rocks and Joshua trees to go around.

    Once again, pretty awesome stuff. Looks like they just buttoned her up and then walked away. Out of ore, death, the War? Makes me wonder what their story was. That was a pretty expensive operation, with expensive equipment and timbers that was more likely brought in with horse/mule and wagon(s) over quite a long distance. It looks like there had to be several people working that mine with all its operations.
    Also appears that the trail, the path and the road have been frequently traveled of recent.
