  • Revisited this amazing and quite extensive mine which has multiple levels to explore. Found a ton of artifacts including a pickaxe, pair of suspenders, ore cart wheel, timber car skip cars and much more. And of course the main attraction was riding the timber car which was a very fun and unique experience most people don't get to do. Hope you enjoy!

    That rod is for cleaning out the drill holes and loading the powdered clay they would pack in front of the dynamite.

    Thank you for keeping location to yourself .. I live in Randsburg and so much history has been stolen and destroyed over the past 30 years . I got to also do the ore car ride at the 1000 ft level of the Union mine back a few years now .. Great fun !!

      Of course, I'd hate to see this stuff ransacked. Although it was quite a ways down there, but somehow people find a way. Yeah I've been up that way and still quite a few mines but I could imagine all the stuff that has been taken out of them. That's awesome you got a chance to go down that far in the Union mine! Thanks for watching!

    wow that wooden elevated platform level at 8:30 was like a underground playground, just much more badass. I don't see much wood at all in the mines I explore in the southeast, too much water just rots it.

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I see these mines as a playground of sorts, just much more risk that comes with them. And yeah that would make sense way more wet over that way, these mines are just the opposite very dusty and dry. Thanks for watching!

    Arvon John is possibly correct. It may be a type of drilling spoon.
    Another possibility, depending on the period of the rod, is it may have been used for removing the dynamite in a misfired shothole. In the earlier days, before mining safety was a high priority, in the larger mines there were specialists whose only job was to clear the shotholes of misfires, so the powdermonkey could repack the hole with new dynamite. Powder monkies were considered too valuable to take the risk. The shothole specialists had the easiest, yet most dangerous job, in the mine. They were the best payed of the miners and they basically just sat around until a shothole needed to be cleared out. However, their life expectancy averaged something like only a couple of years or less!

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  3 года назад

      Now if I had to guess, this artifact most likely dates back to the 1920s or 1930s like alot of the other pieces in that mine. Thanks for all the info on the powder monkeys, super intriguing stuff right there. Super dangerous job, alot of money wouldn't get me to perform a task like that! Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!

    Great video, we used to be able to ride an ore cart in War Eagle, it's well known to everyone, i am not spoiling its location, some idiot pushed it down a shaft. There are skip cars twice as big, but sure you have seen them.
    My only pet peeve is the false floor comment, i live in a house with wooden girders, wood floor over a crawl space covered with carpet, i never refer to it as false, same as the mines, there are hazards, holes, shafts, that are spanned with wood girders and spaced wood boards, they are called a bridge or a wooden floor, but altogether real. sometimes they are covered with dirt, so we pay attention, because they become hidden, yes, but never false.

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  3 года назад

      Hey mate thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed. Yeah I've heard of the ore carts in the War Eagle, too bad the one you could ride was trashed. And yeah the wooden floors are a hazard but makes sense why you don't like them being referred to as false if they're there. Thanks again!

    I have mixed feelings about all those artifacts there. Leaving them means more people can see them, sure...that is until they can't. Meaning it is only a matter of time before they are destroyed or wind up as somebodies temporary memento.
    I would rather know they wound up in the hands of a serious collector, which is probably the best place for anything that's not quite museum worthy.
    I know Frank would definitely take those dynamite boxes if he were exploring...just for example.
