As a lifelong Cubbies fan, it breaks my heart to see the entire 2016 core just disintegrated. It's not just Bryant, you got Rizzo and Baez as shells of their former selves, Russell not even in the MLB anymore, and Contreras and Schwarber are pretty pedestrian. And yeah, this was 8 years ago and a lot of players decline over 8 years, but it seemed to creep in for all of them by 2019 or 2020, and they were all young.
So thank you for the best moment ever in 2016, and opposite of the erasure of the Bulls dynasty while they were still on top, I am glad that we did not have to watch this decay all on one team and have the fans turn on our dream WS Champions.

Breaking that team up was horrible for everyone involved. Had the Cubs kept the core four of Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, and Schwarber we could have had a dynasty. Obviously it would have been expensive to keep them but the Cubs have the money! I honestly believe that all four of these guys would have remained elite players had they stayed here in Chicago. Joe Madden leaving was a huge mistake as well.

The Cubs’ core you speak so highly of was in quick decline before they ever got traded away. You’re right, they would’ve been expensive and the team wouldn’t hardly be any better than they are now had they kept them. Bryant - one of the worst hitters in baseball (and always hurt). Rizzo - slightly above average first baseman (when he’s healthy). Baez - an average defensive shortstop and super streaky batter who leans toward the bad. Contreras - a below average defensive catcher but slightly above average hitting catcher. Schwarber- hits a lot of bombs but that’s about it. These guys were all great from 15-17, but that was a long time ago. They’re shells of their former selves. Time to let go.
