RIP Harry Belafonte. Passed away today 4/25/23 at the age of 96. He is a man who lived with character, integrity, and lived a full life. Rest easy Harry.
Now that Harry mentions it, I think its safe to say that a great artist is one whose artistry is fueled by humanity, not the drive for personal gain. We can use more people like Jim in this day and age.
Belafonte and Henson: two extraordinary treasures of the entire world who speak of hope. May all generations celebrate and remember each of them for their extraordinary talents and visions.
Jim Henson and Harry Belafonte - 2 amazing souls who had a huge impact in this world. May they both rest in peace in the loving arms of the father. Amen
Came back to watch this today to remember two great men who both left extraordinary legacies. RIP Mr. Belafonte, and thank you for all you did for the world.
I never heard this speech. I am so moved and am ashamed we, as a country, as a continent, cannot seem to remember these things. Shame the F*** on us!!!
When I heard Harry Belafonte's music for the first time in my life, I was immediately hooked. The world and I will miss him! People like him don't come by very often.
If you've made even 1% of the impact for good that Jim Henson did in his life, you are a giant hero to humanity. I'm 52 years old and I'm not ashamed to admit to sitting here and crying while watching this.
Rest in Peace and Power, Harry Belafonte. You will very sadly be missed; may you reunite in the afterlife with your family and friends (including Jim Henson).
Such a tasteful rendition of this beautiful song. It was such a perfect choice for the Muppet Show and one of my favorite memories as a child. I never forgot this song and still listen to it today. The production number of it on the Muppet Show could not possibly have been more perfect and brilliant.
To me whats most striking is right before the last verse, his voice starts cracking and it seems to be harder for him to sing. I can't imagine how difficult this would have been.
I don't think many can. Losing such a good friend like Jim clearly was had clearly been painful and singing a song he helped write with Harry must hold a lot of meaning.
This version of the song puts tears in my eyes. Jim Henson truly was the epitome of imagination itself. I'm thankful we had him on this planet, and with how things are going in our world, we need imagination now more than ever before.
Jim Henson and Harry Belafonte. Two giants who turned the world around in so many ways. Their legacies will live forever. May God bless them, their families, and all future generations who will continue to be touched by their Great Work.
He couldn’t have spoken any better at the memorial of Jim Henson. And I remember seeing the number from his episode, it’s still an amazing song that only the spirit can bring to life. If the African masked puppets were also there I would’ve bawled my eyes out until I ran out of tears.
"The song we're about to do was a gift to Jim from a people who come from a continent where gifts are not common. And he turned it ..." Into a MASTERPIECE. I truly believe Belafonte's performance of this song on episode 314 of 'The Muppet Show' was the greatest moment in that show's long history. It showed a level of artistry, of humanity, or seriousness and of power often overlooked among the usual silliness of the show. Yes, it can be argued that Henson had greater achievements with his creations for other productions (ie, the Star Wars franchise, Labyrinth, etc.), but within the canon of 'The Muppet Show', this was Jim's most magnificent work.
"There is no question about [his] great artistry and the extent to which we have all been touched by it. Greater than his artistry was his humanity." I can't think of any finer words to eulogize Harry Belafonte today. "Greater than his artistry was his humanity."
I thank God for Jim Henson. Sesame Street was a safe place years ago. In the 1970's, we would watch Sesame Street in school to solidify the alphabet and math teachings we received that day and we learned the importance of friendship. Whatever is said, Jim Henson had a great vision. Thank You Jim......
@MrTornado300 The Memorial service was in the Morning at St. John the Divine in Manhattan. I was sitting in the audience as an Employee of the company and it was a beautiful memorial service.
This makes me puddle up so much. What a perfect song for Jim Henson's memorial. He would have been all about celebrating the cycle, and not mourning an end.
This song and Mr. Belafonte's comments so ably speak to the deep humanity of both himself and Jim Henson. This was so powerful, both here and when he did it on the Muppet Show. So glad we have the video of both versions. Chills every time I watch it.
Harry Belafonte I have been a fan since I was a young man listening to you on my fathers stereo. Your music will live on for all time. Thank you for your gift of song from the heart. You truly are a steel driving man. May receive with open arms
At the age of 4, we moved to the US and my parents would put on Sesame Street and other shows on PBS for me to learn. The same goes for my younger brothers - we soaked up such amazing shows. I grew up watching every single of the Muppet shows and the movies Jim Henson put out. He was taken much too soon.
Mr. B is a great singer, actor, humanitarian, speaker and good guy. Him and Mr. H were really great friends and entertainers that gave us songs to remember when TV was king
Harry, you and Jim shared a special gift, and that though your talents, artistic vision, and humanity, brought the world together in ways some of us can only dream. Bless you, sir. ❤ May you Rest In Peace
I couldn’t watch anything after Mr. B died… if I heard his voice I just cried… I still cry. I know that there is a beginning and end to everything and I know that Mr. B lived an extraordinary life but it still hurts. I was fortunate to not only know the man on stage but the man behind the scenes as well and I can tell you that I am most def a better person because of him. The people I met along the way will always be special to me and I am forever grateful for their friendships that were formed . I know Mr. B is in a better place… I also know it’s not good bye just see you later and we MUST do better ALL of us… he is watching and we have to continue where he left off. Rest easy Mr B … forever grateful the time I shared with you. Love love love… say hi to my mom ( who died April 25 ) as well and my dad … Dr Watkins too.
FINALLY this is online!!! Thank you so much for posting this, I could type 1000 words for 1000 years 1000 times a day and I still couldn't come up with the words to describe the stunning combination of Jim's genius, Belafonte's talent and the power that the two created when they came together. No wonder this was one of Jim's favorite songs.
Recently watched Harry Belafonte's Episode of the Muppet show. The Songs on that one are definitely my favourites. And this was a wonderful tribute to an Absolute genius. Thanks for posting mate. RIP Jim Henson.
The first time I heard this song, it was on the Muppet Show and it is my favorite song for Harry Belafonte. I glad that Jim Henson want to do this song.
My sister used to work for Henson. She was devastated when he died. Now Belafonte is gone too. We MUST do something about the underlying poverty in this country. We have billionaires in this country who pay nothing to our society, while Americans starve.
Rest in Power, Harry Belafonte (3/1/27 - 4/25/23). Thank you for all the hard work, dedication and positive energy. Truly a life well lived.
He is and was an inspriation.
I hope he and Jim are together again
First generation Sesame Street fan. I liked Harry's talent too. Unlike Jim sadly, Harry lived to see his 90's. RIP to both
With Harry Belafonte's passing, I had to come back here and watch this again. So many chills.😢

Amen. Him, Mr Rogers, and Steve Irwin. Those are the people we need most
Not exactly that we need them but we need to carry on their legacy
and now we can say the same about Harry Belafonte. May he RIP.
@@Hettepop, may he rest in power.
@@Hettepop Very true. Very sad, but true.
A legend pays tribute to a legend.. we won’t see the likes of these again…

"Find GREATNESS in DIFFERENCE" thank you Harry and Jim, you are remembered, respected, and missed so much
I am back here on 4-25-2023 remembering the truly wonderful person and artist Harry Belfonte. The world lost a great one today.
I hope this very song is sung for Harry's memorial. It's so powerful and beautiful.

Rest in peace, Mr. Belafonte. Everything he said about Jim Henson applied just as much to one of the greatest artists and activists to walk the earth.
Your words about Jim Henson are those that should be said about you today. Thank you for your gift of music Harry Belafonte. You are already missed.
If you've made even 1% of the impact for good that Jim Henson did in his life, you are a giant hero to humanity. I'm 52 years old and I'm not ashamed to admit to sitting here and crying while watching this.
You're not alone.
What an elegant human being! What a divine soul!Namaste
All the more fitting since Jim really was an admirer of Harry Belafonte.
