720mm. More natural position. Easier on wrist, shoulders and upper back. Never needed more leverage to turn my bars. Ran 800, 760, 740. Back and shoulder pain after 1 or 2 hours of riding with wider bars. With 720 bars no pain. Also have more power and control of the front end. Ride trail and enduro bikes and trails
Same on my XC bike. I see no benefit in going wider and in forest trails it could become dangerous getting caught by trees.
700mm because otherwise you are not allowed to ride on park connectors in Singapore….however I find it more comfortable than the previous 760mm
I "prefer" 740 for most things...but the 760 feels better going downhill...so I just use 760 and move my hands in when flat pedaling. Anything beyond 760 and my arms are too spread out. I tried 800 once and my range of motion was greatly reduced and my upper body was pulled down too low. Having a bar that is too wide is like riding a bike that's too long. My elbows feel like they are in a locked out position.
6’1 - 760mm on a ripley. some sections of local trail and bridge crossings your bars will hit on both sides. I ran 780 for a long time and 760 feels much better on tight trails
6'1" on a large Spur and 780 bars
100mm travel XC bike 720mm wide is fine, less tree strikes and more aero. Specialized Epic Evo, 120mm travel, 740mm is perfect. I'm 6' tall.
I’m a 760 guy for XC / Downcountry. I was 780, but nicked trees that eventually resulted in a broken collarbone bone. Unrelated - Clint you’ve gotta try 165 cranks . I moved from 175 to 165 across my fleet
760 xc/light trail. Any wider and it can be hard to get in between trees around here.
680mm on all three of my mtb's. I'm 5'4". I'm an xc racer. My tracks are usually pretty tame with very little gnar.
Don't measure bars.
Get some cheap pass through grips that can sit anywhere on the bars and slowly adjust them in a bit over time and go for LOTS of rides.
You'll know when they're right for you when the steering feels balanced between snappy and stable, and your body doesn't feel strained by holding a stance that doesn't fit your biomechanics.
You can measure total length after you cut them if you want and post back here!
I run 740 on xc race bikes, 760 for trail and enduro. 40-42cm on the gravel bike. I’m 5’11.
760 on all my bikes. I‘m 5‘10 and have wide shoulders.
I'm 5'7" with short arms. My full suspension came with 780mm bars and I felt pains I've never felt before in my shoulders from being too stretched out. So I trimmed my full suspension bars down to 760. My XC hardtail is trimmed down to 740.
720 for me. I'm a 76yo and don't ride really hard tough trails. I do ride a lot of tight ones though. I trimmed my One up oval bars to 730 because they said that was as narrow as the compliance would allow to work properly.. I don't feel any difference. 800's really cause me quite a bit of hand/wrist pain after about 10 minutes and I see no benefit for them for my type of riding.
740 to 750 is just perfect. I do both Trail and XC riding.
I’m 5’9 220 with broad shoulders and near a 6ft wingspan, I ride 780mm on my enduro bike and (past FS trail bikes) and 800 only on my trail hardtail. I couldn’t ride anything under 780 feels un natural to me.
I’m not sure how big you are Clint, but those seem wide to me. I’m 5’8”; size 36 jacket and for me anything beyond 760 feels to wide for me to have a stable platform. I ride 720 on my Epic Evo which I race and ride for most trails and I ride 740 on my Ripmo. Also, for a lot of XC course, I feel like there are sections where either passing or simply riding through trees are inhibited by anything beyond 720 - frankly in those cases I almost wish I was still riding 700s. My friends who ride 800mm bars are generally very big with wide shoulders.
750-780 is plenty wide enough for me at 6’1” we have narrow places that I don’t want to stop at I’ve never even tried 800
I'm 5'11" so I do like longer bars. But I'm sure I can use pretty much anything if I have to...
780 on my 2023 Niner Jet 9 RDO 5* XL
I’m 6’3” so suits me perfectly.
760 I ride way more trails with trees and tight spots than tech downhill.
I prefer 760mm on my Trail bike for the riding I do on non-bikepark trails in West Virginia, western Maryland and western Pennsylvania. I still manage to clip some bark off trees occasionally. I remember when you rode with 740mm bars on your Trail bike, 2014 Trance 1.
700 mm is perfect i ride some very tight trails plenty of times.
Cycling is a game of millimeters. Hard to believe 10mm off one end of a bar is worth a video, but 165 vs 170 cranks is a huge difference. I used to run 720 for XC, now I run 740-760.
For all riding 780mm bar width works for me. I bought the OneUp bar in 35mm Rise and tried it for a few rides at the stock length of 800mm. It caused a lot of wrist pain. So I cut them down to 780mm and perfecto!
I have a 780mm handlebar on my trail bike and I love it. The bike has a head angle of 68.5º.
800 but wondering if to trim them down due to similar near misses with trees here, I’m in uk
I was using 750mm for a long time but upgraded to an 800 bar. I have really long arm and prefer the extra reach. I should probably try 780 but I'm too scared to cut them down😂
There’s always superglue if you don’t like 780 (kidding… Don’t try that!).
For my Stumpy Evo, 28in/710mm. For my Epic Evo, 25in/635mm. I'm 5'9". I never did buy into the really wide bars. Narrower bars just feel more natural to me. Also, there are lot of very stiff scrub oak bushes where I live, which are like little hands that reach out and grab your bars. I've tried 30in/760mm but they just feel too wide. I honestly don't know how an average height man can ride a 31.5in/800mm bar.
I’m 5’9” with a 6ft wingspan and wide shoulders and ride 780 on my enduro bike (meta Am 29) and 800 on my trail hardtail (canyon stoic) both size large
Anything under 760mm feels like a kids bike.
750- 760
760
Im 5’6”, ride in the midwest. I prefer a 720bar+80stem on the climbing bike; 750bar+50stem on the gravity bike.
After riding on a super skinny bar for years, it felt very strange having 800mm on my new ride. After some neighborhood cruising and easy trail rides, I have moved down to 750mm. I’m not completely settled on this width, but I am giving it some time. Here in north Georgia, the trails can be twisty and tight. I’m gonna sit tight for a handful of rides before making any more cuts.
I ride a dirt jumper, so I'm at 680 right now. I mostly ride bmx-style street, skateparks, and very mild trails.
On my Ripley AF, I have my second set of bars cut to 760 and really like it. The stock bar I had cut to 740, so I did increase. Not sure if I would ever go wider.
800, definitely gives you more leverage. Works for me, I’m 5.10 3/4, ride a 29” single speed
I tried 800 on my new 2022 trailbike for about 6 rides. It was uncomfortable for my hands plus a couple tree strikes. Now at 760 which is great.
XC racing 760, any wider and I would be clipping trees.
770, I split the difference, I had 780 on my initial bar set, 760 on my previous Spark. Moved to PNW carbon bars and went to 770, seems to work, pretty tight trees around my area. I'm 6'
740 here on my current XC bike which came with 780 but that gave me some shoulder pain so just out of curiosity tried my previous bars and the pain went away.
760 for me, I'm 5'7" and ride a lot of tight twisty trails around the Tallahassee area.
750mm…when they were 780mm I found my hands were never at the ends . So I cut them down… plus I can get through some of the tight sections easier.
780 on everything. I ride large xc , down country , trail and fatbike
740 On my Spur. 760 on my trail/AM E-bike.
780, but landed on that after reading should be the same as preferred hand placement/width for pushups. Made sense, quick and easy to figure out
I've been running 780 for a long time and never found that width uncomfortable. I ride mainly single track through the woods up around Toronto CA. The only downside, as you mentioned, is when it gets a bit tighter going through the trees. I've scraped the bar caps a bunch of times but luckily haven't had full on contact. If I ever did any bikepacking involving longer rides on more open and less technical trails I'd probably shorten the bars to 760.
760 to 780 is ideal for me. 800mm handle great but you tend to hit branches a lot
Nothing less then 780, i have some at 810 which I'm liking the more i ride them .
Another one for 760. 5'9 on an Evil Offering in NC.
6', 72" wingspan, my bars are 760.
I live in Pennsylvania so tree strikes are a real concern on almost every trail, I’ve found that 740 is a do it all sweet spot for me.
770 for all riding, it’s a nice balance
I run 720 on the xc in a small frame and 720 on the med trail
760 for both trail/xc.
760 xc Santa Cruz Blur v5
I’m 6’1 and ride a Large trance and 800mm is perfect
