Canon Powershot - Low Battery Icon Fix

- How To on fixing your Canon Powershot that displays a flashing red low battery warning even when you've got enough charge in your batteries. Here I show the cause being down a dropped contact (which I won't fix) and how to do a fix with just a pair of pliers.
You'll also see a few false alarms (bloopers) in my attempt to fix the problem but by seeing these you'll get a better idea how much you need to bend the contact

Even 12 years after this video it is still useful. Had this issue with my Powershot SX100IS. Clip came out while I was trying to do this trick but I managed to pry it back into the slot. It helped in the end. Thanks mate!
Can I ask you questions, did you fix your camera like this clip? Mine is the same sx100is as yours. I tried to fix it but it didn't work.
@@user-pn8kc9pe4b It did fix it. Perhaps you're using bad batteries? If so you need to switch to either Alkaline or rechargeable NiMH. The issue came back when I put some cheap Philips batteries in there. Then it went away when I put some Alkaline Vartas I had laying around, then I put some rechargeables and it works like a charm. I think this low battery icon thing is more likely caused by crappy batteries than by something related to the contact (unless there is corrosion on the contact which requires a different tactic to fix)
@@PoloPulse Thank you so much, I will try it.
THANK YOU!! I have had a Canon Powershot A580 for many years (almost 10yrs) and I use it almost daily. It has been such a reliable little camera until recently when I started getting the low battery warning constantly. I spent a fortune on new high performance batteries, the same as the ones I use to run my digital SLR, and I was still getting the low battery warning and random switching off. I was about to throw it out and buy a new one when I decided to run an internet search for the problem and came across this video. Lifesaver!
BTW mine wasn't working at all. Kept saying "Insert Batteries" and would then shut off..
i am too late, but did you find a solution for it?
@@lixer001same problem here

Thank you, works like a charm!
I've been having this problem for more than a year, and now I finally found the solution.
I was using this method for about a year but it never made any long-term difference.
Then I remembered that there's a little watch battery that takes care of the time and date.
I bought 5x CR1220 batteries on eBay for 99p, replaced the old one which came with the camera 7years ago and now the battery icon only comes on when the AAs need charging.
Hope that helps someone else with the same problem.
I'll try that. thx
+Simon Humphrey Thank you, I will try to get this little pesky CR1220 batteries. May be that's the problem, because this video solution did not work for me!
Thank You so much for sharing this! I have a PowerShot SX130 IS that I received as a Christmas gift years ago (2008 perhaps) and I hardly ever used it I have always been delicate with it etc. it started that low battery indicator then turned off saying change batteries. I don't know how many batteries I bought before I realized it wasn't the batteries. Then I see this video and tried it and it still didn't work. It never dawned on me to get that tiny battery replaced! Lol I never even thought about a battery being in there (super beginner with cameras). I am crossing my fingers this will work because I love this camera so much would hate to have spent money trying to get it repaired when all it needed was a new flash battery..
Question though, the battery compartment that takes the two AA, the cover gets very hot fast.. Any idea what that may mean?
Energy consumption in this camera model SX130 is high, I have the same model. Another thing you can do is inserting pieces of paper behind contacts, I can fix my Canon SX130 bending the contacts but maybe in the future I will have to insert a piece of paper to increase the pressure between battery and contacts
How do you change the watch battery?
What an easy fix. Very useful for my old Powershot A530. Thanks for that video!
Thanks for the vid man!! I just fixed mine. I removed the little oval plastic piece, cleaned of the manganese on the + side and bent the little metal piece out. Works line new!!
minha camera estava com o mesmo problema segui suas instruções ficou perfeita novamente, muito obrigado!!! parabéns!!!
First of all, thank you very much for this video. I thought the problem with my camera was related to the capacity of the batteries until now. I even bought a PANASONIC ENELOOP battery yesterday by paying a lot of money. I did a google search as the problem still persisted. I came across this video. And finally I solved the problem thanks to you.
i've been trying to figure this out for months and almost bought a new camera even though mine takes great ones! thanks so much!!
Thank you SO much! My battery life progressively got worse and I was about to give up on my camera. Well done! Working like a charm now.
Thanks! This fix saved me the price of a new camera! I had been changing batteries in between photos! :) Highly Recommend!
Here is a better fix. BUY 1.5V rechargeables. NOT 1.2V which is what
standard batteries are. Cheap rechargeables are only 1.2v which tells
the camera that its half dead by the time you even turn it on! I repeat. use 1.5v rechargeable's. Not 1.2v. The camera requires 1.5v not 1.2. I have 6 of these cameras.

I can't thank you enough. So simple and I was so complexed over it. It's fixed and I thank you thank you thank!!!!!
Thank you! My camera just started doing this 2 mins ago and I found your video and I fixed it.
thanks!! you could put someting under de contact too to keep press againts the battery.
Brilliant thanks, I'd replaced the backup battery in my old Canon PowerShot A570 IS but was still getting this issue. I just gently bent the battery connector and it works fine now - cheers!
u r an angel .. thanks for fixing my camera ... kept it in my locker for 10 months as it was not working and showing low batt.. respect !!
I had the same problem, and the same model camera. This worked for me, thank you for making this video
Amazing, it works! My old Powershot SX120IS was revived. What a shame for Canon, such a simple defect to fix. Thank you very much friend, a like for your channel
Thanks. Fixed my Canon Powershot 710A IS with the same trick. I only had to bend out both of the contacts as the second one is also only a flimsy metal strip.
Thank you very much! I stumbled upon my old camera and felt very nostalgic. Tried to power it up after putting in new batteries but it kept turning off. Then I did what you said and now it’s fixed!
I'm going to try this on my Canon Powershot A480 - would tin foil jammed in not work easier??
Thanks a billion from me as well. I had the exact same problem with the Powershot A470 and had stopped using it for almost 2 years. Now it's up and running again :-).
yOU are awesome! Followed your video and my camera is working perfect--no more low battery flashing! THANKS!
i was really excited seeing this fix, thanks mate!
Worked like a charm. A year of frustration ended. Thanks.
Any word on a fix for the 330 hs battery terminal issue? Can''t seem to find a fix. I really don't want to waste weeks to send it out to canon.
Great advice. So simple! I was ready to buy another camera & chuck this because I was so frustrated. Thanks alot.
does it work with sx120is? My sx120 has this problem too!
Thanx! Just wanted to revive my old Canon Powershot 540 and replaced the CR1220. Well, after still getting a battery warning, bending the contact did indeed help.
Saved me a lot of money. Thank you!
it started working for about 3 seconds once i did it on both batteries but my problem to start with wasn't the flashing low battery sign it was actually the screen saying change the batteries - do i need different AA batteries? or is it with the little round battery ? i thought it shouldn't matter but...
I have a Canon A480 Powershot Digital Camera that was showing the low-battery icon even though the two batteries I put in it were both brand new and measured 1.6V on my Digital Multimeter, I tried bending one of the battery contacts up a bit and that seemed to fix it, cheers for that suggestion.
I'm having this problem but with a Vivicam 8400 digital vivitar. Any tips? I tried this but it didn't help much
Thanks Dave, worked on the 480, didn't need pliers, mine had a plastic insert clipped into camera, just clipped it out and works a treat! :)
How did u do it
I've had this annoying issue for years on my Canon power shot A720 lS. I saw a blog which said to try lifting the battery contact IN THE BOTTOM of the battery compartment. I did try it but it;s not easy to get to easily nor see what you are doing. I wouldn't want to break the connection. I love my little camera and have tow others but still prefer to use this which I;m used to.I've got the added problem of the battery case not closing home on one side. Nothing I can do about that.
that little thing that you bent there just broke. now what should i do to replace it?
Very helpful. This fixed my camera. Thanks a lot.
on certain cams no issue like SX 130is. contact at same level. there with Stereodatamaker warning could come too early, but we had a software-workaround.
Thank you so much!!!! It worked perfectly on my A1200 that I was going to bring to the technical service or to the garbage...
Excellent fix. Thank you!
Acabo de arreglar mi cámara gracias a ti, you are great! Thanks
So what do I do if that hook that holds the battery thing down is broken?
Thank you it really worked for canon powershot A530
I have a PowerShot A410 and it always says "change battery" even though the batteries are new. This really helped me big time. Thank you so much!!
It is also constantly displayed for my camera Canon PowerShot A2000 IS. I tried that but it doesn't work. Do you have any other tips?
I have the same problem but with a Canon Powershot SX20IS which needs 4 Double A batts and doesn't have the metal rod you can bend but instead 4 flat metal circles, Any suggestions?
Mr. Whitehead: Thank you, I just fix my Canon SX130 IS with your method. I tried before using dielectric solvent, rubbing contacts and batteries and I tested several alcaline and Litium battery brands. The camera has been working for 4 years without problems and I had took more than 5000 pictures. Now, I am trying to fix another camera, 12 years old Canon S2, with the same problem, but I never tried to fix it because I replaced with a new toy, a DSLR and I lost my interest for S2.
It worked for my A1200. Thank you so much.
Had the same issue. I cleaned my contacts first with a Norwex rubber brush. Even though my contacts looked okay, after cleaning them you could tell a difference. They should be nice and shiny. Works great now. I recommend cleaning the contacts before bending them.
Very helpful. Saved my time and money :)
THAT was a great hint!
Now my sx130 is working fine again - I just bught a new sx620, as I had not found any clues!
But hey - it´s two canons now: Akimbo Style :)
bless you and your accent! that was really helpful
THANKS!! It worked for my Canon Powershot A720IS. Your video just saved me a few hundred bucks buying a new camera and pulling out the rest of my remaining hair! :) Now I can shoot widefield astrophotographs with it again!
Hi! It still working?
Wow I can't believe this worked but it did! Such an easy fix!!!
Thanks a lot Dave... Fixed my problem :-)

Immediately fixed the problem on my A570is. Thanks for the tip.
I will try That Mine one is Cannon Power shot A530 Thanks Hope it will work !!
I know this video is 8 years old but it fixed my camera. Thanks so much!!
Does the flashing affect the battery of the camera?
You just helped me fix my A570, appreciate the assist!!!
This seems to work on my A710. Thanks!
it works ! Canon Powershot SX110IS ! I put a little piece of paper behind contact
wow it worked for me too! thanks for uploading!
i search ab cameras not turning on but im glad i clicked on this becuz this is my problem since i revived my dads camera TT this helped a lot thank you i thought i bought a wrong battery
Thank you so much fixed my PowerPoint a570
Parabéns pelo vídeo 👏👏👏👏
Anyone fix their A720 using this method? Changed the date and time battery and that stopped flashing but the low battery flashing is still an issue, despite bending the contacts
Amigo muchas gracias acá desde chile saludos !!! Me salvó
The fix is to use high power batteries like eneloop pro, cheap ones just don’t work, if the batteries weren’t making contact it wouldn’t power on
I have the same problem, my camera is Canon Power Shot A490, but this solution did not work for me. Can someone help me ?
thanks dave, thanks worked.
canon powershot s1
I tried to model machine. Whether thank God. You have a good thing.
love and respect from turkey
how many days the battery stay working on ur camera ?
if someone is watching this in 2024; use a thinfoil and wrap around a small peace of that metal contact he was bending, if its not enough wrap another peace and another until it works!
Edit: If it still doesn't work, then its the small battery that you have to locate (you will usually notice that the "set date" when you turn on the camera appears its usually that battery) and just replace it.
Thanks bruh. You smart and just saved my money.
GOAT 🐐 Worked on an A470. Thanks man!
Worked very well!
Thank you so much! I just fixed my camera like that.
Thanks a lot. It worked for me.
Mine said "change batteries" then it turns off. Its a canon powershot a495 can someone help me?
It didn't work on a A720 IS. May be Cannon f* up requiring 3.15V, but the 2 AA only provide 3.0V
Thanks that was a big help!
Graciass logre arreglar la cámara, no sabia que era lo que le pasaba 🙏🏻
Thank you- it worked!
Thanks, just fixed my A720 and don't have to replace a camera that I really like!
not working with my A1000 is. what to do?
I had to also remove those little plastic rings on the + side. The one that's inside the body I used a dental pick.
YES... i was close to throw my camera at the wall but you saved me! Such an easy fix.
Thanks a lot, I had the same problem, now it's solved...
Works on the A590 Powershot, since doing the video couple years ago the issue hasn't reoccured. Rechargable AA are perfectly ok, I get 400+ photos per charge and they'll happily keep their charge till needed. Don't believe the myths :)
I'm impressed with the videography. Who's holding the camera? Are there two people involved in making this video? Great job!
You sir are a genius... thank you
Thanks man. It worked
Why not stick a bit of duct tape below the contact?
May be bend the contact out like you have and put some sponge foam behind it to help it maintain contact.
