    Thanks for this episode, Tony!! I have two daughters who not only love Taylor but took me to see her in concert a few years ago. As a music enthusiast, former music industry geek, and still budding guitarist, I've been to thousands of concerts and must admit that her concert was one of the best I've ever seen.... but I digress. Although I've always respected her songwriting, I never paid attention to her guitar playing until now!!! There are definitely a few take aways from this episode. Thanks!

    History has proven that this girl is the man. Yes she has some songs that I see as genius. She writes to every genre. So how could any artist not see her brilliance. My taste isn't mainstream and I don't listen to free play music so I don't get to hear alot of her music and she still has my respect.

    So, off topic question about muscles. I've been playing guitar in a new way that my hand muscles are not used to, fun stuff, but caused an injury where even holding my coffee cup is difficult. These are barre chord shapes I'm not used to. Been regularly stretching it but my question is should I take a break from it, or try to push through it? I don't want to lose any ground I made on that muscle but don't want my hand to be unusable either. Does that make sense? Of course I'm continuing to jam the usual open chords and scale stuff I'm used to.

      I will offer my unsolicited options. If a person is accustomed to running one mile daily begins to run five miles daily, he will notice the difference. Perhaps two miles at first with gradual increase towards your goal.
      If you only practice 10 minutes daily, limit the barre chords to two or three minutes of each practice session and Perhaps one day each week 5 minutes for a bit. It will get better if your technique is proper (which may be the first thing you should check).

    • @randallhacker
      @randallhacker 2 года назад

      Thanks John (and great guitar-geeky last name btw lol). I think I agree and that I should get more technical with it so I don't over-do it. I'll limit barre chords to a set time and gradually increase. Appreciate the input!

      Get some lighter gauge strings on your guitar. SRV had arthritis and while famous for playing 12s & 13s (or even higher on occasion), but when he was off touring and not having to play every day, or his arthritis was flaring up, he'd drop down to 11s while he got his hands back in shape or recouped.
      I like lighter gauge strings anyway. As BB King told Billy Gibbons said, "Why are you working so hard?"
      You could also get some soft foam balls or soft therapy putty and work up to firmer foam and putty. My daughter has a syndrome that makes her have weaker muscle tone and she wants to play guitar so that's what I got her to help build up strength for fretting while letting her hand work with more natural movement than a fretboard.

    • @johnwashburn3793
      @johnwashburn3793 2 года назад

      @@randallhacker Thank you, believe it or not, my father's grandparents were Washburn and Martin and I have one of each.
      The lighter gauge strings is also brilliant and be certain that your guitar is properly set-up. You can also consider a nylon string guitar for practice while you develop strength in your left hand. (Used,pawn shop, eBay...). Good luck and happy to try to help.

    i really loved this episode. taylor is def overlooked as a talented guitar player, her playing is dynamic and the combination of her guitar playing and vocals is so melodic. she's not a guitarist - she uses the guitar holistically to be a musician. her performances w/ just a guitar are amazing - my fav are the grammy museum performances

    I’m not really a huge fan of Taylor Swift and Country-Pop, though I enjoy a few of her songs and other select songs in this genre. I recently attempted playing a few of her songs, and upon listening to the tracks closely, watching videos of her playing the songs, and examining the tabs, I realized that she uses lots of fancy chords, odd chord changes, and techniques that are WAY above my head. However, the songs are very adaptable to allow a player who is a borderline beginner to intermediate player to still play many of the chords and techniques in a more simplified way - in other words, taking what could just be played as open chords, but attempting to integrate “some” of the more advanced techniques and chords. It really upped my playing skills a bit because I wanted to sound similar enough to “fake it till I make it.” It’s a huge lesson that we don’t all have to be fans of a particular artist to gain a great techniques. Most Pop artists really do have very basic songs progressions, but we should all explore popular artists to peel back the layers of their songs in case there are things we can learn! Or take the basics and try to make them our own by adding other techniques that weren’t used by the artist. Either way, it’s a fun way to up your playing game!

    #Swifte thanks! Adding edit:
    I like Taylor for the style reasons you discussed, here are some of my favorite songs and why:
    Paper Rings: rockabilly verses, country style chorus, keychange on the bridge.
    Betty: watch the CMA performance. Has dynamics you talk about and percussive hits during the bridge & song ending. As well as grabbing the bass notes during most of the song. And a key change!
    Everything Has Changed. Watch the live x-factor performance. This song is a duet with Ed Sheeran (enough said really).
    Lastly, King of my Heart. Is a pop synth recording, but there are great acoustic covers as well as a snip of her playing it acoustic. Great song
    Thanks!

    Taylor's Tiny Desk concert contains some of my favorite live performances, especially the two guitar based ones you included here, “The Man” and “Death By a Thousand Cuts.” As for using the guitar percussively, in “The Man” she occasionally raps her knuckles on the body of the guitar. I believe she uses this technique in some other acoustic numbers.

    If Taylor Swift gets some young people to pick up an acoustic guitar ,and learn her songs that’s a good thing. Taylor is a very rudimentary musician. You should be able to play these songs within six months. Practice everyday with one of her songs for half hour. If it gets you involved in music kudos. Then if you want to get serious like Paul Simon plan on dedicating your life.

      Hello from Kansas City, Missouri. Because of the fact that a note on sheet music could be played on several different strings on a guitar (as compared to a piano or violin) most guitar players prefer using tablature as a form for notation of musical display. Unfortunately, I have very limited vision and tablature is very difficult for me for more than a few minutes at a time, as is texting. Good luck.

    The techniques described here are pretty pedestrian. Taylor is not my thing but I will not dispute her songwriting abilities and most particularly her clever lyrics. But she is very much an average guitar player. To state otherwise is crazy talk and an insult to people who have really put in the hours mastering that instrument. It's okay that she's an average guitar player because her gift is songwriting like John Lennon. Being a virtuoso instrumentalist is not her project.

    • @robertnewell5057
      @robertnewell5057 2 года назад +1

      Davey was a great, innovative player, but the situation re: black mountain side is slightly more complicated. Jimmy Page learnt this from Al Stewart. Al Stewart learnt it from Bert Jansch's 1966 recording Blackwaterside (which Bert had in turn learnt from Anne Briggs). Al mistakenly thought it was in DADGAD, and so that's how Jimmy played it (Bert played it in dropped D, a version of greater subtlety, but still with the signature riff). At least, that's the version on the Led Zep studio album, which contains not just the repeating riff, but also most of the Blackwaterside melody. However, I've seen at least a couple of later live recordings where (even though it is still titled black mountainside) Jimmy's version has huge chunks of Davey's 'She moved ...' arrangement in it, including the 'improvised' sections. White Summer is a direct lift of parts of Davey's 'She Moved...'

I don't see those dudes with her credentials, her prolificity, her sales, or anything else. I don't see them criticizing men's fashion and guitar choices on stage. How is a dude in pants so tight you can tell what religion he and playing some ghetto flaked hockey stick headstock axe any different than Taylor wearing anything with sequins and playing a guitar with some rhinestones on it? She's not purporting to be a lead player, yet they constantly compare her to lead players. I'd rather have a solid rhythm player over some lead player that can't keep time, any day!
    I'm not a huge Swift fan, but I can admit she's got talent and can play some damn good guitar!
    Her best song (to me) is "Better Man", which she gave to Little Big Town for supporting her when she was coming up in the biz.
