I'm glad that combat looks dynamic, and not just mashing left mouse in front of the monsters. I was worried that we'd lose all complexity in the switch to first person.
Plus it's playable in third person!
yeah, seeing bufs, debufs ext. I saw at some point you can actually fear mobs, debuff them with slows and poison. If those things are important on harder settings , potd ext, it could be really fun.
@@vullord666 Is it??? Thats amazing. Im not super into the first person stuff. It gets too frantic for me, and hard to keep an overview of the battlefield.
Dark messiah + oblivion + something... love it
Yep just played dark messiah and besides the writing it was great
+ PoE
Looks abit like Dishonoured as well
@@plainluke722 That's basically what Dark Messiah is, yeah.
Much better fluidity and impact in fights compared to the previous showcase. I'm being excited again.
I kinda liked how it looked before lol.
Don't be, it's 30fps locked.
@@KiltedCritic You apparently don't like to read/watch properly what's being said. On PCs it's 60 fps, and currently they guarantee 30 fps on consoles. Which is bad, yes, but not a definitive answer "at launch".
Morti isn't a channel based on social hate comments, please don't go that route there's no point really when other social media already do that.
@@okagisama What's a "social hate comment"? Why is stating a fact from the developers qualify as one?
@@KiltedCriticYou trying to tell someone not to be excited because they see fluidity in the combat because it’s 30 fps. Let the person be excited
Really like how Avowed seems to play. Not a fan of the UI, but thankfully that's customizable
Yeah... getting rid of these damage numbers floating would already solve this for me, it's the most annoying bit of UI I saw in the video
If I can turn off the yellow crit circles it's gonna help already...
@@Tentacl yea an accessibility/UI option kinda
@@ricardo_lavra Never got damage numbers personally for this style of game. They can benefit in games like mobas but a single player game like this doesn't need em. The only time I have left them on is in a game like Cyberpunk, but honestly I think most games could be design in a way where you don't need floating damage numbers.
@@scalpingsnake exactly... on cyberpunk it kinda fits the setting.
A godlike who can wear a hat ain't a godlike in my book.
what if he wears a hat that naturally grows out of his head though?
Whit 😂
It's the only godlike we've seen that can and it's the only one we have never seen before deal with it maybe that's why this one is so special it doesn't have anything obstructing it's head and can wear a helmet 😉
@@XxW4RB0RNxXDon't we play as a Godlike?
@@kabelfritz That is what a Godlike is
Damn, it's looking a lot better. I was kind of concerned it was going to be mostly action and very little RPG, however it looks like it has good RPG elements.
I saw Parasitic Staff, Spirit Lance and Blackbow. Gonna be a fun time as a battlemage
Oh wow, I didn’t even see that. That’s a game changer. I’m ev more excited now.
This showcase looks amazing, I hope it lives up to the expectations... Please Obsidian do your magic
Looks like I have JUST enough time to finally play through POE2 before this one comes out. Probably a day one purchase in our house (if there is a physical copy, that is).
Hopefully there is a physical copy cause that cover art is too nice
Poe 2 end bosses are pretty hard you better get started cause I still havnt finished them 😅 had to take a break they were destroying me
I realllllly hope we get the Cipher class.
And chanter. The two unique aspects of POE character classes, itd be such a shame if they werent in the game.
Going to play it either way but chanter and cypher are def my two favorite classes in POE, which chanter-monk being my favorite setup.
February going to be a busy month, Avowed and KCD 2. Two huge games coming out.
What's KCD 2?
@@NecroMantis kingdom come deliverance 2
And Civ VII.
@@Funnytown01 To be fair, civ games are one of those, you want to buy a full edition :D
Wait, February? Isn't avowed coming out in November?
Cool. After Pillars of Eternity 2 they can take my money anytime :)
I would agree IF this was a Pillars of Eternity game. Just like Dragon age, they make their own game put in some lore, and characters and pretend it's Pillars of Eternity.
@stevenwoodward5923 if that's the case then they would have called it Pillars of Eternity III.
It's just a game set in the Pillars world and they have treated it as such
@@ChrisHMusic95 If that's you opinion Great, I won't try to dissuade you, go spend your money and have fun. Its something I concide a waste of my money.
@@stevenwoodward5923 yeah i agree, it doesn't give me that pillars vibe, seems more like outer worlds
Pillars 2 dreadfire was one of the most underecognised RPG's of all time. Im still playing it today...
So spellbook is a separate weapon, nice. Finally in an action rpg you can be a full-fledged mage with a wand and a spellbook (without those barbaric swords).
P.S. Is it just me or does the combat in this game really have a Dark Messia vibe? Either way the combat looks very intriguing.
replaying POE to prep for this and beat POE1 recently and started POE2 and man this was such an upgrade, one of the most improved sequels of all time. I cant wait to explore the Living Lands!
Enjoy it because PoE2 is such an awesome field trip to learn about cultures, colonialism and everything in between that's just so good!!!! Eder takes a pretty central role if you like him
Took me a couple of seconds to understand why you would want to play Path of Exile before playing this.....
Still in PoE1, heading to Durgan's Battery. I will have time to beat PoE 2 (or try, at least) before the release of this one. But pleaaase let me have a cipher !
@@millesabords1654Poe2 has multi class system I love a soul anihilator (cipher + fighter) and Avowed uses an open ended tree that you can mix and match to build your "class"
Absolutely floored that this is a direct sequel to pillars 2. Didn’t think we’d get something like this. Cannot wait, and I hope the delay helps them complete the polish they need!
Blood magic? This thing that was to controversial for Veilguard? :D Go go Obsidian, fingers crossed!
Loved POE, glad to see they are translating that to 1st person 3D. I hope the writing is as strong as the others, truly a high point.
the combat looks way better than earlier reveals, i'm pretty happy with the improvements
I started playing the Pillars of Eternity games a couple of months ago thanks to this channel, and I fell in love with the world, characters and story. That has made Avowed become one of my most anticipated games in a while, and I share the excitement when I hear news like these. I can't wait for it to be released!
Would love to see Eder, even for a brief cameo.
I WANT TO DATE HIM ARGHHHHHHHHHHH
Please no
We don't know how far into the future this is he may have returned to the wheel that his God broke lol
@@XxW4RB0RNxX we do know. Obsidian says it takes place a few year after Deadfire.
eder and aloth -> best bois with best banter
I hope they do Druid and Monk skills too, not only the three classes shown
I think if that was the case they wouldn't have hid it up until this point, that info would be good marketing for fans of their previous games.
Avowed uses a classless system.
Here's hoping the game will do well enough to where it can get some content updates or expansions that add extra skill trees based on other PoE classes.
@@scruples Then why does it use Ranger, Wizard, and Fighter abilities? Sounds like classes to me.
@@grimdolo918 I think you are not limited to one class, but you can pick/spread your points on different skills from those 3 classes, like if you wanted to be proficient with melee and learn some sword skills, but at the same time, you can have the ability to throw fireballs from the distance. That's my understanding of that, hence you can see the character is equipped with both a spell book and a sword.
I wonder how this game will affect the franchise. If it flops it's safe to say we ain't getting another entry in the world of Eora. But what if it's successful ? Will they continue to pump out Avowed games onward or try to appease both camps with a BG3 style PoE 3?
@@CliffBackerTheThird most probably Avowed games. It's not exactly the same customer base
@@warlockwod This is what concerns me. I don't mind the first person perspective all that much and I would gladly take a one off Obsidian take on Dark Messiah. But I would like a much more indpth RPG from future games , than what they have shown here.
I guess I should have to hope for it to be moderately successful. Enough to merit a sequel, but not enough to completely forsake PoE fans.
The combat has always looked like an absolute blast to me. I don’t understand what people aren’t liking about it.
Its different from the past 2 games. Personally, im happy when studios try something different, as long as they put their heart into it
Yea I dig it, the handedness was like classic fps rpg like oblivion etc. guessing it may be the feedback(?) which the recently gameplay teaser showed they added 🤔
They have improved the combat since the first reveals of the game. But people generally thought it looked a bit floaty and not so impactful. I think the combat looks better in these last few reveal videos though
First person melee combat can look pretty awkward for people who are not used to the genre, and the animations needed some polish in the early trailers. They've improved a ton though, I think the combat looks excellent now.
I like how familiar it looks compared to PoE. Like everything you could do there in regards to combat you can do it here as well from what it looks like.
One lore tidbit I didn't hear you mention: the player character in this showcase was also a godlike, specifically a godlike of "an unknown god." I don't think the devs elaborated whether all Avowed PCs are godlike, or if that's an option for the player to decide. The coral growths in the PC's head could mean that the player is a godlike of Ondra (ocean goddess, for those who don't know), but I can't help but speculate that this unknown god could be an ascended Watcher of Dyrwood (the player character of the first two games). Time will tell! Like you said in the video, it's very interesting that the game is set after Pillars 2. I had been under the impression that it would take place before Pillars 1, ever since the initial reveal. Looks like Eora lore enjoyers are in for a treat. :)
They talked about that in the last update which is why I didnt mention it here but yes the player character is always a godlike of an unknown god. Also yeah, all the rumors were that it was a prequel or it took place at the same time, so confirmation that it is after is huge news.
Character models looks amazing.
which ones?
Mortismal Gaming, cool video keep up the great content
I try to avoid news about unreleased games, so I don't end up being disappointed when it doesn't live up to a preconceived standard that I have concocted in my own imagination. With that being said, I have been unable to control myself with Avowed. I loved both Pillars of Eternity games, and I cannot wait for more! As long as the lore is consistent, I will enjoy Avowed.
Oh I like that system of explaining lore! Seems like something a lot of games should adopt!
just finished PoE 1 over the weekend and just started Deadfire (both first time) to prepare for Avowed and the world of Eora.
Give me a Two-Handed Hammer, a cameo from Eder and the wizard A....loth.... the elf? Anywho, I'll be very interested to see what God we came from if Eothas destroyed the wheel.
This to me always looked like Outer Worlds set in PoE universe. I have no problems with that.
I knew it reminded me of something
@@saskue357 yea same. It's uncanny similar.
This has me the most excited for Avowed since the first reveal trailer years ago. At the time I thought "awesome a game like TES but from Obsidian" then went on to learn that it's in the same setting as PoE, played those, fell in love with CRPGs, and I've pretty much only been playing CRPGs for years now.
This game REALLY interests me!!! And as someone who has never played the isometric Pillars of Eternity games, I greatly appreciate that you touched upon the fact that there will be an ingame glossary (if you can call it that) in Avowed that can help new players understand the lore and certain terminology better. Also, thanks for the info that you have a lore series prepped for PoE. I immensely enjoyed your Divinity lore videos and can confidently say I'll most likely enjoy those as well
Eothas: "Let the cycle be discontinued."
Having the confirmation that its set after PoE2 increased my hype so much.
i really hope that this game will make more people check out PoE2 as i believe it is a pretty good newbie-friendly game when it comes to the cRPG genre.
For those who love Pillars and Eora this could be the next beloved entry in the series. For those who don't... It's either love or hate
Now I'm SUPER pumped for this game. MAN Mort!! I"m so mad PIllars2 didn't do amazing amazing game!
Yeah, it was very cool. For anyone who played Pillars 1 or 2, I recommend watching the original of this showcase.
only one thing that concerns me at this point is that the game is 6 months away and they still have barely shown us any third person gameplay despite confirming it exists, hopefully they show it soon and can fix it by launch if there are any criticisms , especially considering this will probably be their first, third person 3d rpg , afaik
They advertised 3rd person?
@@MinecraftMartinyup they confirmed it in june iirc
@@Gaboub12 Oh neat. I hope they can pull it off.
I never played a game that did both first and third person without one or both being weird.
We'll see what happens lol
This is just a guess, but I think they probably added 3rd person due to feedback from the reveals and the delay out of 2024 + the fact we havent seen much of third person is likely because they're still doing all the animation work necessary for it.
@@ash-xb8yq pretty probable it's just like Oblivion: terrible 3rd person animations, and it's there mainly for when we want to see our character, not for fighting in it
This feels like a transition from top-down-isometric to 3D:
- Helldivers: 2D-HD1 => 3D-HD2
- PoE: 2D-DeadFire => 3D-Avowed
Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 were isometric as well, and 3 is 3D.
@@metarenegade (yup my bad, PoE and HD1 were more accurately 2.5D)
eh. BG3 is still 2.5D with 3D (in-game)cutscenes.
2.5D means still topdown-isometric, but you can rotate.
For a moment I was wondering what the hell Path of Exiles has to do with Avowed.
@@datbunneh3671 lol. Pillars.
Does the fallout series count?
The more I see about Avowed, the more excited I get! I think this is going to be a stellar RPG!
Im really looking forward to the release of this game. I hope they do release it in Feb, as promised. The news that it is set after POE 2 makes me excited too. I might even replay POE 1 and 2 leading up to its release.
Game looks great now. those original trailers didn't do the game any justice at all. Combat now looks a lot stronger than The outer worlds. I see debufs, and buffs. Weapons have special effects and attacks. You have way more skills to use than i thought, and so do ur companions. Dialogue choices look really strong, level design looks very nice as well. They also nailed the pillars setting now, it feels very pillars. It's also nice to see it still has huge chunks of text to read from notes you find and item details. This is the first time i've actually been excited for this game. This game play should have been shown a while ago honestly, but its here now and it looks great.
This is looking very nice however KCD2 is priority for me
I didn't know that Avowed was a continuation of this universe. That makes me more interested, but also sad that we're probably never going to get another game like PoE from Obsidian.
Man the previous reveals made this game look like skyrim 2: electric boogaloo, but it's great to see it's a proper, full blown, rpg.
Knowledge that the story continues after PoE2 makes this game so much more interesting!
1st person with tons of stats. I love it.
I did put Pillar 1 on hold (got to the Keep/home), that was like a year ago haha. Gonna look up your lore/story videos for sure!
9:27 Seeing that wheel kinda gave me hope that the players are not limited to 4 skills. My assumption is that it will automatically pause the combat, and you can cast/use skills (and items) that are not currently bound to your keys/buttons, maybe?
Shoot I never beat Dreadfire. I need to go back and beat it.
Man I’m so excited for this game, I think the sneak attack was a cypher psychic blade, also I really hope the give us mod tools this really could be “THE GAME” for me for a long time
Yeah I'm in agreement @mortismalgaming Im much more excited for this now after this most recent showcase than it was beforehand. I do think that it looks more interesting now knowing how the additions of lore from POE effect the setting of Avowed. Combat looks a lot more fluid and engaging. I'm curious are you going to do any coverage of Crimson Desert? And what's your thoughts on what they've shown of the game so far?
Looks neat
I was already going to give avowed a shot but now I am even more excited about it
I'm 100% making mage gunslinger in this game. This combat looks great.
I noticed the companion had a point blank shot on a skeleton near the end that did 10 times the damage of a normal melee swing. If the player can do that...
This looks more promising. Love the focus on verticality.
Some new games to recommend.
Norse
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II
Miramar
Grand Arms: March of the Red Dragon
The Outer Zone: Survival Tactics

Thanks William 👋
Not sold on this one yet, even though its made some clear improvements from when they first showed it off. My biggest worry is that the combat will essentially play like in Skyrim - which I found pretty painful even 13 years ago.
Its remind me of Dark Messiah Might and Magic in many ways (exploration, puzzle, combat). Im looking forward to play this one.
I loved Turn Based Deadfire and I was hoping for Pillars of Eternity 3 but this looks cool too! with the success of Skyrim it should do well hopefully!
Let’s hope the ending is not like Deadfire
Visually it looks way better than the previous showcase I have to say.
This new footage really has be anticipating this game now. I love it. I hope it is not a really, long game so that I'll want to playthrough with multiple classes.
4:56 me too! Btw, I consider most 2D games as "1.5D" considering you control horizontal axis fully but vertical axis only coarsely. Isometric is "true 2D" (you control two axis fully). Many 3D games are almost 2D in essence (the "2.5D") since you basically control 2 axis. I love it when games use lots of degrees of freedom. The more the merrier imho.
What do you mean by controlling axis fully and coarsely?
@nomoiman in a sidescroller, you can go left and right to reach the point you want with precision (horizontal axis). On the vertical axis, usually you can only jump, which doesn't give you the same precision. In some cases, you can climb walls, giving you full precision of the vertical axis, while losing control of the horizontal axis.
@@UlissesSampaio But remember the horisontal is made up of two axes, the X axis (left and right) and the Z Axis (back and forth)
2D has the XY axes and 3D has the XYZ axes
@nomoiman but in most 2D games (i.e., sidescrollers like Mario), horizontal only have a single axis. There are some , like Golden Axe, that did have very limited horizontal y-axis motion, though. "True 2D", as I call them, are isometric types like Diablo, where both X and Y have the same agency.
No eothasian priest class makes me UPSET
OH MY GOD IT TAKES PLACE AFTER POE 2? That's music to my ears!!!!
My most anticipated game next year.
Is looking really good.
I wonder if is possible to create a Cypher, a Chanter, a Priest and all the other classes from the original poe.
It's a shame that the game was delayed, but that means that the game will be more polished and that i have more time to play poe 2.
Pillars of RUclips Jazz 🎶
The thing I'm most concerned about is the size of the world. Pillars 1 and 2 both felt expansive, but The Outer Worlds was small. It wasn't a universe, it was a few small locations. I think the only way to get that expansive feeling from a 3D game is to go the Skyrim route and have it big and have lots of random details. Borderlands 2 felt more expansive than Outer Worlds did. If this doesn't have the scale I don't think it'll feel good.
Just hoping it will be as in-depth dialogue and story-wise as POE2. This video make it look like it just may be!
AFTER PoE2?!
OMG THATS GREAT NEWS!!!
As someone who never played PoE, i'm slightly worried i'll get left behind or overwhelmed by the story of this. Obsidian are one of the only devs i still have faith in though, so i'll role the dice.
This is looking a whole lot better, and like a lot more of an RPG than I had feared. I loved POE and POE2 so I will probably be purchasing
Blood Magic in Avowed: YAY
Blood Magic in DA:Veilguard: NAY
Make a game set in Tevinter... call blood magic "too evil".
The old writers must've all left, I guess, because they clearly forgot about their own lore. I genuinely do not understand it, because the topic of blood magic has no clear ties to any modern day hot potatoes. It says nothing to no one.
I’m excited to finally get more pillars even in a different perspective, but as far as I’m aware they’ve still shown nothing like monk or druids spiritshift. I’m hoping one of my two favorite playstyles make it into this new classless system.
Thanks for the video. There seems to be a lot of promise here, so I guess we'll see if they can stick the landing. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
I am throughly disappointed in a lack of class combinations and new combat changes. Will buy for story but man it just feels weird
I am moderately excited for this game. Combat looks a bit stiff but that's not the end of the world. If it has a decent story, decent quests and an interesting world to explore, I'm in.
I was expecting something different from an Obsidian RPG, but hopefully it's still good
Great to hear you so stoked about a game :)
Not a big fan of making "HUGE" use of vertical space. Just becuase you can, doesnt always mean you should. Sure sometimes it would make sense and be fun, go for it. Not all the time.
Awe man I am so pumped to follow you for avowed news, now to replay PoE1 and 2 or not??
I'm with you man, I read the IGN thing but they didn't mention anything about it being set after POE2...if you played that game and enjoyed the story that's massive news!
This will be my Skyrim 2.0.
Can't wait. Interesting that it's after the events of Pillars 2. Not gonna hype it but looks really good.
POE was the crpg that truly got me into the genre, both POE 1 and 2 were great. If they had stuck with this being a CRPG I would not even hesitate to buy, however I'm just no longer into first person games anymore.
I do wonder how they'll handle the Ranger class, and if it will have a companion.
It'll have third person
Looks much more solid than the last trailer. Hope it's good.
5 backgrounds isn't much but if they integrate them throughout the game, interspersing dialogue for it the whole way through. That'll more than make up for the lack of options there imo.
Your enthusiasm is contagious!
Those combos makes me think that just like the next Dragon age it's based on Mass effect with its 2 companions doing their thing in combat with a very limited set of orders you can give.
Not the worst idea, better than "hit enemy very fast / snipe from afar" that is the most advanced strategy those 1st person action combat system tend to have
So So much potential
Game looks awesome, I love the spell aesthetics.
Looks great. Excited to play.
If I had more time I'd love to do a PoE 1 > 2 replay before launch, but with Outlaws, Ragnorok, and Greedfall 2 early access about to drop... most likely isn't going to happen
still hoping this will be more New Vegas than Outer Worlds; but I’m still cautiously optimistic that the delays are at least a positive sign.
The Pillar of Eternity games are pretty great but Avowed has me worried.
I still wonder if we're going to be able to integrate our choices from POE I and II, or its set far enough in the future or far away from the past locations to even matter
Almost certainly not on the choices, and it has to be nearish future from PoE2 or they'd have to handwave away why the world didnt end following the events of PoE2s ending.
Really intrigued but the idea of the combos in combat. I really hope we get a Pillars TTRPG at some point though! On another note, idk why but every UE5 game I look at feels very cool when it comes to the lighting no matter the color scheme. Is this just a Lumen thing?
