This is proof that you don't need flashy, expensive CGI and special effects to make a true classic film.

    • @saberiandream316

They don't make classics anymore, just product to be consumed mindlessly by the masses. No different from any other Snickers bar churned out at any other factory in the world.

You need a good story. That's one thing that Hollywood doesn't do any more. And you definitely don't need a political message which is what Hollywood loves now.

It is one of the greatest movies ever made. No pun intended, it is timeless. I saw it in the movie theatre in 1960. And it holds up even today and will into the future. For us old Canadians theater is spelled theatre.

I agree. The 1960 movie had some cheesy fight scenes with the Morlocks but at least it tried to stay closer to the book. The 2002 movie version of The Time Machine was awful on the whole. This book was so great. It is one of my favorites. Maybe someday in the future someone will do the movie the way it should be done.

@Nidhogg Having watched both the 1960 and 2002 versions, I must say that both deviate from the book, with the latter to a greater extent. The book is much darker in tone and more preachy than both movies. I found the time traveller's description of his descent into the world of the Morlocks particularly chilling.

Still doesn't quite have the impact the book had on me. For instance, in the book after he takes the machine back, he goes to an even more distant future and makes a stop there, to see the sunset of life on the planet, the ocean taking over most of the land, and barely escapes being devoured by a giant ocean creature. Not to mention all his reflections on the humankind and society throughout the book.
