  • John Daly wins the Open Championship at St Andrews with drama coming from Costantino Rocca, who needed a birdie at the last to tie Daly. When he duffed his pitch into the Valley of Sin, all hope seemed lost.
Yet using a putter from 65 feet, Rocca knocked his ball up the steep slope and then into the hole. He sank to his knees and slammed the ground with his fists in sheer jubilation. “I had no putt, but it went in,” said the Italian.
Rocca was spent even before the four-hole play-off, which Daly won by five strokes after the Italian took three to get out of the Road Hole Bunker allowing Daly to receive a heart-felt ovation at the last. “The names that are on here,” he marvelled while looking at the Claret Jug, “it’s unbelievable to be a part of it.”

While other pros would practice in-between matches and tournaments John was drinking. While all the other pros invested in swing coaches and private trainer's John was busy giving the casinos 40 million dollars. Safe to say if John Daly had worked at golf ⛳ like Tiger 🐅 he easily could have been a top 5 golfer of all time.

Phil Mickelson (and Pete Rose and Michael Jordan for that matter) says hi. Daly isn't the only compulsive gambler in professional sports.
John Daly could have been a better player than he was. Just how good no-one can say.

I followed the ball with John Daly and Jarmo Sandelin at the Scandinavian Masters, I think it was 1997. When JD was going to play on the first tee, he took an iron club because the first hole was a relatively short par 4. The spectators started to boo because of the club choice. He changed his mind and took out the driver. The spectators cheered.

Was there as well.. They started on the 10th tee at Barsebäck and both birdied it as I remember it. At least Daly did.
By the way, it was in 1995. The week after this Open win. Daly finished 9th.

That’s an all time electric pair, Jarmo Sandelin was not exactly a quiet player himself. Seems like those two had to have either totally loved or absolutely hated playing together, I’m guessing the latter

This was a John Daly I dont think we saw much of again. Calm and in control and playing great golf. He could have been a golfing great but drink and riches ruined him. Alas. I would encourage young kids to mimic his free flowing style when he won his majors.
