1983. That was a long time ago. Such a long time ago. Third grade, for me. But these cats aren't as older than me than they used to be. By 1987, I was into them. I found out about The Fall in 1989. I always felt like I was an outlier, I didn't have good taste. Boy was I wrong. The Cure, Depeschkljljas Mode, Nitzer Ebb, all these are good, but the first was the best, and the most: you take one, one, one for your family....
I came straight from the southside of Chicago to the western suburbs when one of my college buddies introduced me to this song. I had never heard anything so weird in my life! Lol I had growing up on R&B music and jazz, so this was quite the stretch. But here I am 30+ years later singing every word and remembering my friend Fred. Rest in peace buddy, we will see each other again soon!
I'm 56 love these guys. It brings great memories. My husband learned how to play it for me even though he was not into this. I would sing terribly. He's been gone almost 11 years and man I hear Metallica, Alice in chains, too many songs it puts me in my happy place. Music is life.
I sat cross legged with the love of my life and sang this with her..we're not together now and I'm always going to be heartbroken about her. Every time I hear this I get taken back to that night singing and her beauty and our friendship.. Thank you..
Had the pleasure of seeing them at the gorge one year at sasquatch Out of all the huge a list acts these guys put on the best show both musically and in terms of being showmen Lol the played mainstage in the middle of the day when everyone was working off the hangover / taking the good drugs underneath the scathing eastern washington sun These guys come out to entertain and do a truly exceptional job of it
I would say actually that this song and many others on the album are masterpieces. These guys figured out how to bottle up all the guy angst and concerns of teenage guys and play it with passion and immediacy in a bizarre folk/hybrid fusion that never before existed (and never has since) but sounded inevitable none the less.
I don't normally make comments, but after what I just experienced a week ago, I GOTTA! I have been a fan of this underrated band for as long as I can remember hiding their first album from my parents as a young Utah kid in 7th grade. A few years later, I was lucky enough to see them live in Salt Lake City 1991 with a good buddy of mine, and to this day I have said it was THE BEST live show I had ever experienced up until that time (and we went to a lot of live shows). I just had the opportunity to see them back-to-back nights on their current 2024 tour! Nothing like seeing them perform their second album (Hallowed Ground) followed by their first album (self-titled), the entire band along with The Hornes of Dilemma, are playing so damn tight. Gordon's guitar playing, and voice is as strong as ever (not sure about his long gray hair freaking me out, looks way older than he really is . . .LOL). Brian Ritchie (lots of appreciative smiles) playing as good as ever on this crazy big beautiful acoustic bass (so underrated) while bringing the crowd to their feet every time he would stage front SOLO! Even better, I am 51 years old and had my two young teenage sons with me on both nights; both boys had a great time, we purchased tons of merch to proudly sport for years to come! My boys were already fans of their music, now uber-fans having seen and experienced them live. Can't wait to see them again, hopefully not too far off in the future. KEEP ROCKING FEMMES, THE WORLD OF MUSIC NEEDS YOU!!
Just heard a snippet of this on a RUclips commerical and had to look up one of my old favorites! I love this song... I remember jumping around and singing the chorus as a child. Good memories.
Mi amiga Nicole died of liver cancer. As her coffin left the memorial service, this song blared loud over the PA. Well played, Nicole! Love you forever!!
My favorite power trio of all time. Make no mistake, this was THE psychedelic, folk rock band of the 80's. Their live concert from the boathouse in VA or whatver it was named is kickass. I was a skater when inwas introduced to them by other skaters. I was simultaneously introduced to The Dead Milkmen and i still dig their stuff too.
My familiarity with the Violent Femmes dates back to schooldays. Great to know there are always sprightly tunes of this ilk in their back catalogue which I feel are eternally reliable listens
This song has a special memory for me My grandpa's house was going to be torn down. So me and my friend had a picnic across the street and watched the house get torn down. This was playing while it was happening. Great day 🤍
I send this to any friend who thinks they can't sing, can't JAM, can't make good music because of A, B and C excuses. Perfect song that didn't have autotune
It’s so weird- I just started medicinal cannabis for a severe illness and this song I remember my dad listening to when I was a kid popped up… man I’m so strung out 😌
I love this song, and I love this art style. It really reminds me of the drawing style of the singer from my favorite band, Alice Donut. Any other Alice Donut fans get that vibe from this art style?
Scrolling through the comments looking for the "this song is about masturbation" vs "this song is definitely about drug addiction" debate but it's not here...great job everyone 😃
I thought it was about a girl who teased him in high school for having small hands, so he writes a song from the girl's perspective, basically implying she is a bad person. Kind of like Frank Black(Pixies) has been known to do.
I was watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch from like 1996 or 1997 on Hulu, and they go to a Violent Femmes concert in one of the episodes. I looked them up to see if they were an actual band, and I kinda like their music. I’m usually into extreme metal, but they’re not too bad.
Years ago, around 1992, I remember seeing Melissa Joan Hart on Arsenio Hall or Dennis Miller or one of those shows, and she mentioned that the Femmes were one of her favorite bands. Which I thought was pretty cool.
This probably my favorite song reminds me of highschool when I met my best friend she was self conscious about her feet so I changed the lyrics to big feet instead of big hands to make her feel better

You Know a song is good when it is still played on the radio 40 years later and it didn't even chart.
That is a good indicator
This didn’t chart? It should have!! 😍💃🪩🕺❤️
They also play it during Pro Sports Games
My favorite song. And under the bridge. Tie lol
You ask just have away your ages
This is an 80s song evolving into a 90s song. *Way* ahead of it’s time. 😊
Sometimes....in order to get to the future...you must go to the past.
What a great song, I love it! I put it into my "Shellshocked Radio - Recommendations" List: ruclips.net/video/o_xMjpXS7Bo/видео.html Very well done!

Exactly! And they don't get any credit for being pioneers of the Alternative scene that lasted well into the 90s.
Yes! Totally agree!
great performance Alex & Steph

I found them at 14 and am a couple years older than you, so around the same time. Brings back some crazy memories, doesn't it?

Omgsh me too. Best times of my life.
I had every lyric in this album memorized when I was 16. Still awesome!
Cool to see that this song is still popular in 2024!!! My dad showed me this and I've been looking it for house
Listened to this for the first time last night. It's hard to believe it's from 1983 when it sounds so new.
Hey, wait. 1983 was over 40 years ago???? I'm gonna go quietly age away...
Watching Grosse Pointe Blank and made me have to come listen to this again...and again...
Criminally underrated movie

Best song about withdrawal ever written, because it's upbeat.

I bet that was awesome, the Gorge is one of my favorite venues in Washington. I've seen so many great shows there.
