Meanwhile, Indie Retailers will offer an exclusive “Aqua” pressing, and Urban Outfitters will offer a “Violet” variant.
One of the greatest American songs ever written.
Truly.
Absolutely!! I’m a thrash metal fan as well, but these lyrics are darker than any thrash lyrics!! I love the femmes!!
I do love american music
Yeah it is 👍💀
A.....MEN!!!!
Steve Martin: makes joke about the impossibility of banjo music being sad.
The Violents Femmes: hold my beer.
I always knew this song was dark but 30 years later and having my own daughter OMG!! Gives me chills.
🙏🍻
Right!
Darkest song ever.
Well my dad just sent me this and said it was my fave song as a kid 😂 along with Eminem 97’ Bonnie and Clyde 😂 it’s just as dark
My dad used to play this in the car when I was younger
My grown son & I shared. Outstanding.
Your dad is obviously beautifully twisted. Cherish him.
I bet you were a well behaved kid :) I did the same thing for mine btw. On acreage, with a well. But they are boys so they knew they weren't thd subject matter :) Hey they liked Primus Zoo sounds ( Krnkle) more than Disney .
For some reason they thought Disney was always the exact same story with different characters .
That's one way to get a kid to behave.
W dad
This is true American Gothic. Unsurpassed!
My favoutite VF song
I had me a wife, I had me some daughters
I tried so hard; I never knew still waters
Nothing to eat and nothing to drink...
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think
Well, I'm a-thinkin' and thinkin', 'til there's nothin' I ain't thunk
Breathing in the stink 'til finally I stunk
It was at that time, I swear I lost my mind
I started making plans to kill my own kind
I started making plans to kill my own kind
"Come, little daughter, " I said to the youngest one
"Put your coat on, we'll have some fun
We'll go out to mountains, the one to explore."
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door
"Come, little daughter, I will carry the lanterns
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caverns
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caves."
"Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves."
"Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves."
A led her to a hole, a deep black well
I said "Make a wish, make sure and not tell,
And close your eyes, dear, and count to seven..."
"You know your papa loves you; good children go to heaven."
"You know your papa loves you; good children go to heaven."
I gave her a push, I gave her a shove
I pushed with all my might, I pushed with all my love
I threw my child into a bottomless pit
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit
Gather round, boys, to this tale that I tell
You wanna know how to take a short trip to Hell?
It's guarenteed to get your own place in Hell
Just take your lovely daughter and push her in the well.
Take your lovely daughter and throw her in the well
Don't speak to me of lovers with a broken heart
You wanna know what will really tear you apart?
I'm going out to the barn; will I never stop in pain?
I'm going out to the barn to hang myself in shame
Thank you.
I cried the first time I heard this song
I laughed my head off cuz it was the Femmes. Had it been Pearl Jam or Metallica I'd have cried for weeks.
@@stoneneils I mean it's Dylan's Hollis Brown unofficially.
@@stoneneilsI don't get it lol
I can't complain about my kids' music because this was my jam back in the day! Still a great song
That's the best defense for gangster rap that I have ever heard. 😀
I had the privilege and luck to see The Violent Fems live in an outdoor gig near Seattle way back in the mid 90's. it Was Better than Live, it was one of the best shows I have ever seen! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jelly
Found your music more 20yrs back , Thank you, Diane and pirate,
What a great song
Love them. And Harley Poe
So Deep, in own truth's understanding.
Bless you for your honesty, ghostly thoughts that murder, reflected bright to tell 👁️🗨️
Your story,
amidst elegant hallways, shadows and pain.
what you give,
Makes people feel less alone
Thank you
For your love & true x
Hope I'm not missing the point (again) x
Listening to this always gives me goosebumps, Gordon can get really creepy when he wants to...
This song always made me feel like romantic heartbreak was a joke. Even more so now that I have a child. Helped me get over break ups.
1999 my freshmen year. My cad teacher introduced me.
My meditation counselor recommended this song to me, pretty cool.
the spirit of Townes Van Zandt is strong here.
Glad I'm not the only one! Makes me think of 'Our Mother the Mountain'.
You'd like to think so. Not really though. Not at all actually.
No comments? Where is everybody?
Death song for youtube!
Still the most requested song on my busking set list.
Get a jerb!!!
@@gigabrother458 get a life.
@@bjelliott Please don't take obvious jokes so personally. I wish you all the best with your career, my fellow birthing or non-birthing person.
Nothing wrong with busking or spanging don't be shamed 😂
saw this live in Milwaukee not that long ago, never really listened to them much until now.
They're still touring!?
@@kyleblankiv7589i am currently all ready jamming this album while i wait for my friend to pick me up for the sold out 40th anniversary of their debut album tour!! I am sooooooo excited 😊 🤘🤘🤘
Haunting bango
I like remember papa loves you.. it hits home for myself.
my happy song
My children, just , dont, get it......
You know what to do.
This song, and "The ballad of Hollis Brown" (Nazareth). Can't believe I didn't grow up to be a serial killer!
Apparently I loved this song as a little kid my dad told me recently and also 97’ Bonnie and Clyde by Eminem I’m just as shocked too but I work retail and some days I feel like I’m going to snap and go off 😳😂
This song used to haunt my nightmares 😈🪷
understandably .. It's an horrible story.
it's baptist angst
hits extra when you were raised protestant.
It's the Ballad of Hollis Brown almost.
It's The Bottomless Hole almost.
I love seeing influence work its magic.
This song beat Pumped Up Kicks to the chase.
completely different vibes
@@tinkerthetinyrobot the observation wasn't about vibes, it was about subject matter.
I feel that it’s even darker than that too
This has been my go-to song for man many years!! If you hear me !! Hello there!! But dude was fucking to much not thinking.
Masterpiece.
I like american music.
Chilling….and amazing.
my memories of my dad playing this around 6am when I was a kid in the car while going to a skiing mountain, I remember how I refuse to go to sleep every time because i thought it was not tuff.
Pure genius 👏 ❤😊
When the food and water is all gone I guess this works.
Such a dark song....but I love it. What can I say?
good song, well done
The story in this song is so well written and sung..
Folk music is awesome..
This one is kind of sad, but still awesome 😂
Does anyone else think that the baseline sounds like the Veggie tales theme song? Also, this is my fucked-up childhood favorite from when I was 7. YEAH!
I had the greatest honour of seeing them at the Garage in Glasgow many years ago. Favourite live band ever.
Saw them in Columbus Ohio, early 90's- i agree one of my all time favorite concerts!
I was astonished how good they are live when i saw them back in 2005. Real quality
John m greene hall in 1996 quth cracker, amazing show!
This is the song i'm living these days.
Saw them live Mean Fiddler Harlesden they had to burn it down!!!!!
I understand why he did it.
I’ve always loved this song, despite the unsettling lyrics.
Same, but because of the unsettling lyrics.
Same but I love all the Violent Femmes songs
Ditto here too...or maybe just blotto
We've ALL been in those woods, amIright?
i was around when this came out, it was amazing. Something old is rarely appreciated like it was to the new audience of the time.
That was the good song!
I love this song so much, I remember my mom listening to it in the car, I ended up writing a story in 3rd grade about this very thing, I just now realized I was talking about this song
@@RonCoop at least it wasnt Add It Up
First time i heard this song it was like a finding New religion.....
Wild how Gordon's darker writing hit on concepts we would see in the culture decades later - Family annihilators, Incels, addiction. All while looking like wholesome midwest boys. Brilliant musicians....
I mean people like that were always there, they have just gained more popularity and more following due to the internet now. This song seems to be about the depression.
Yep
2:38-2:51 my favorite part
I mean, haven’t we all?
I paid $25 to see them in the 90s many times..last time here tickets started at $180!!!
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves
Just the job
Cowabunga dude 😎
thank God I had college friends into these guys, I doubt I would have found them otherwise
I WANNA TALK TO MR GORDON AND HERE WHAT THAT SONG MEANS CUZ ME AND MY DUDE DIFFER ON TBE ACTUAL MEANING OF THE SONG! LO E ME SOME FEMMES!!!
This is va music
Yikes! Have a nice day 😃
God Saves.
this song was traumatizing way back. Still is a bit but it was an incredibly written song.
My friend sent me this at 3am
Wait... the well is in a cave?
Yup
Shoooosh
Wsoooosh...lights out!
Yaldaboaths vengeance
I could never kill Alice.
I’m dead lol
i don't get it. i like the sound and the atmosphere. but i don't understand why he kills the girl.
it's just a story, also it was written when the guy was in high school
but Id imagine it's a bit like what happens in the shining
@@Guitarded4 ah, Danny!
They call it evil 😈
Well then I guess you're just not psychotic
There’s a drought/famine, if the family doesn’t ‘get smaller’ they could all starve
❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Def!!!..only prob is the girls are smarter than me😂
🤙🤙🤙
Yellow brick road
My conscience tells me I shouldn’t like this song. Good thing I don’t listen to my conscience.
This song is why I never had kids.
She probably had it coming...
its just a death wish.....not a song
Like to hear a woman singing this.
True song
Much love to this band!!!
