  • I wanted to show off some cool maps that people made for GMod. The map-making community is insanely talented and exploring these has been a lot of fun for me.
Here's the links to the maps I played in this video:
    Poolrooms: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
    Places from your dreams: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
    Macey State Psychiatric Center: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
The Librarian's video on MSPC: • GMOD VR: Exploring Mac...
I apologize for the weird aspect ratio. I think I’ve finally realized why this has been a problem for me and I’m hoping I can fix it soon.
    Music used (some slowed):
Silent Hill 2 - White Noiz
Silent Hill 2 - Prisonic Fairytale
Silent Hill 3 - End of Small Sanctuary
LISA The Painful - Welcome Home
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Twilight
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence - Fog Enshrouded Nightscape

Thanks for the shoutout and for checking out the map! . I love your narration and the use of soundtrack in this video, you set a really nice vibe as you explore. Just scrolled through your channel and there's a bunch of videos I'm excited to check out later. Subbed! I'll answer some of your questions/observations in a reply to this so I don't show spoilers unless people want them.

      1. You actually found a way in that I didn't anticipate, which is really cool because I was hoping people would figure such things out. There were actually chairs near the dumpsters that could be used to climb on top of the garage on the same side and enter through a window, which is what I thought you were doing at first, but you surprised me!
      2. There is indeed a sound that can play in the tunnel, which is related to the story of the tunnel ghost on the workshop page. It was supposed to be unlikely to trigger (like a 1/4 chance), but it happens waaay less often than I intended. It also only has one chance to trigger, so walking back and forth won't make it happen. I may patch this at some point. (It's a whisper in your ear that asks, "Do you have my hand?")
      3. There's nothing to the legend of the forest maniac. I just figured that not every legend should have any truth to it.
      4. The tree with no hitbox is just an oversight on my part. I made the small pine trees not solid because they had a weird and restrictive hitbox, and I must have done that one as well by accident.
      5. You're the first video I've seen that found the hidden comfy room! I normally didn't want to require noclip for anything, but I figured such a thing wouldn't mesh well with realistic exploring, so I just made it so only those who were really curious about the barred tunnel would find it.

Got such mixed feeling about that guy!
He chooses very interesting games (and maps), and has some good observations, but I had to give up watching him do playthroughs - he just talks too much. He talks over important audio clues, and misses things entirely because he is trying to figure things out before the game gives the clues.
Still, he seems a nice enough guy, and I still watch his videos exploring things - just not his playthroughs! ;-)

The hospital reminds me of this abandoned complex me and my friends used to hang out in. One of the buildings had steel shutters with a person-sized hole in the bottom, like you would have to crawl to get through. Inside it was pitch black but with a torch you could see a mattress in the middle. We were too scared to ever go in. Once we did hear someone coughing while exploring and I've never run so fast in my life lol.

The sanitarium one kinda freaked me out on a personal level. When I was 16, a couple of my friends were walking around a run down part of our town, where there were a lot of foreclosed buildings - a couple office spaces, an old factory building, an abandoned church, etc. We found this set of like, plastic picnic tables by one of 'em, and we would just hang around there sometimes - you can have a lot of fun in an abandoned lot, lol. One day, when we were eating some kind of fast food there, we heard music from one of the nearby windows. Not a piano, a saxophone. Just, out of nowhere. I remember two of our friends bolted, but the rest of us were kind of like "hey, why don't we go find out what that is" and found a way inside. We eventually found the room where it came from, but right before we got to the door, the music stopped, and all we found inside was an old saxophone on top of a desk.
Never heard any urban legends, no local myths about it. There was just a saxophone there, in an old office building, and at one point, we heard someone play it.

I haven't played gmod in forever, but I feel like I'm still linked to the game. It's such a unique experience. I remember exploring a lot of maps for the atmosphere and the interesting concepts. I'm not easily scared, nor am I much of a horror fan, but sometimes I'll find maps that make me a little uneasy. Not necessarily because it seems scary, but more because it feels like I'm exploring a dream- a dream composed of many little aspects and experiences throughout my life. Sometimes I feel a little guilty for exploring some expansive atmospheric maps (plus the liminal space meme) because the environments feel so close to me. With all of the unorthodox structures and features in places they're not supposed to, it reminds me of how confusing dreamscapes can be. Just as the brain throws buildings and assets all over the place, creating a unique world, gmod map creators create their own creepy locations in-game. It's strange seeing how weird people make their maps, especially with those horror sound effects. Also, I like the maps with huge buildings and villages. I love that psychiatric centre, for example. I have done some urban explanation, but I have never been inside one of those buildings nor have I been inside of an operational one, yet there's something about it that feels familiar. Plus, it's such a beautiful map. It's extremely well made and I could see it being the setting for a turn-of-the-millenium horror game similarly to Silent Hill. Personally, I have found some really cool maps on gmod that I kind of want to revisit. There was one that looked like a village in a castle and there was also one that was a monolithic structure that looks like the artstyles of Shadow of the Colossus and Bloodborne came together. It was ornate, yet imposing, and it really stuck with me since I first saw it.
In conclusion, I love this video. It reminded me of perusing the lists of maps and exploring every crevice of some interesting structures, whether realistic or uncanny. Another added touch of nostalgia is the Silent Hill 2 music. I hate to admit it, but that almost made me tear up. It's such a beautiful game, and personally I think it's the best horror game I've ever played. Thanks for this return to my younger self and the strange nostalgia of seeing that engine again. You did an amazing job.

It was so funny hearing you go from "there is nothing inherently scary in this map" to you seeming to dread going into the dark spots on that first map.
Also it's cool to see someone's perspective on these maps that doesn't have thousands of hours in the game. Gmod was the first game that really hooked me when I was younger and I saw so many crazy things. Back then you had to go to a website to download addons and maps and manually put them in the correct folders. Joining servers you REALLY had no idea what you were going into.

It's always a pleasure when you upload a video like this. I find myself more fed up with the constantly energised videos with subtitles and snappy cuts every three seconds as time goes on, and as it becomes a more common form of content, it's lovely to have stuff like this that just cruises along at it's own pace. It's a really relaxing and nice change of pace. Literally.

it feels like i have a lot to say but i just cant really find the words for it. not really new for these kinds of videos as ive went into so much detail on the atmosphere before so it would feel like im repeating myself. either way, thanks a lot for making this and sharing some of your personal experiences with us. ive noticed that a lot of people connect these kinds of maps to places from their childhoods that were usually old, like their grandparents' house.
my grandparents used to have a pretty weird house that i couldnt really fully wrap my mind around as a child, but it did result in some really weird dreams back then (and some more recent ones), and the fact that i was surrounded by really old tech and old media really amplified it.
i also have the concept of an old yet still operational school having a really comfortable atmosphere but some pretty weird secret rooms or passage ways stuck in my head. its been there for a really long while, actually, and im glad that there are other people that have similar ideas in mind.
other than that, i just love to look at places like the abandoned psychiatric center and imagining how it was while it was still operational and not abandoned. i like to imagine how it was at the start, during its prime and what lead it to close down in the end. it makes me wonder how the people there lived and how their minds would possibly have worked and other dumb shit like that.

After first trying out SFM a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised how intricate maps could be and wanted to eventually give Gmod and its' maps a go. Sadly, my PC died before I had a chance to explore it myself so I appreciate the casual and chill tour without hammering in on the "uncanny eerie backrooms" angle that has been annoyingly milked to death. The urge to explore these lovingly designed locations full of subtle details is so engaging. Would love to do maps myself one day.

Your content scratches such a specific itch for me. Lucid dreams, beta Minecraft, “liminal spaces” (as sadly overused as that term is), urbex, the feeling you get from listening to the Silent Hill ost. I can’t put the feeling I get from all of that into words, but it’s something nostalgic, and a little spooked, and maybe womblike, and infinite in a way. Like how dreams let us create an infinite internal universe. I’m rambling. But thank you for your content, I think it’s important to put this sort of feeling into a physical format, for future generations to understand. Someday people won’t have that nostalgic link to Betacraft or Silent Hill or Gmod, and these videos are important to get that feeling down

I can tell that you're passionate about this stuff. I too find the topic of dreams to be infinitely fascinating. I too fondly remember dreams from my childhood; perhaps this is the reason why I love the works of David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman. Moreover, as a young gamer much like you, I'd also often spend hours trying new maps for unreal 2004; vaulting through community made environments, completely bedazzled by the amount of heart people would pour into their work. Just as you are, I'd take my time too, amazed by the tiny details, the sound effects, and easter eggs. It almost felt as if I had the ability to jump between worlds--strange, alien, foreign, and often times beautiful.

2:20 - I did the exact same thing! I loved swimming and, in particular, swimming underwater as a kid, so the idea of being able to do that throughout the halls and rooms of my home was uniquely captivating.
7:51 - This is a great observation, and I actually had a dream which illustrated this principle just last night. In the beginning it was set in a natural environment (trees, rocks, water) but at some point it abruptly switched to the interior of a concrete brutalist construction. What was especially interesting was that the location was in some sense "the same"-the space was structured identically; more than that, its "internal logic" or "identity" was the same on a metaphysical level. It was like I was seeing the same place from a different perspective, or perhaps one underlying Platonic ideal expressing itself in two different ways.

(Also, I just realized you have a Judeau profile pic, and Berserk is the greatest piece of fiction of all time.)

2:32 also had similar fantasies in childhood, and to this day I often get dreams where I just see a familiar location from real life but it's flooded, sometimes to absurdly high levels of water (couple of stories) which probably would not be possible even if all the icecaps in the world melted

It’s possible 2 and 3 are more popular so their music is more well known. Full disclosure, I’ve never played any silent hill, so I just use the music I’ve been exposed to. I will check out 4’s soundtrack though

11:45 I remember when my mom still worked as a cleaner for houses with my aunt, she would take me and my cousin to the houses they cleaned. There was this one house, we only visited once but all I remembered was me and my cousin playing pop songs from that time as we played and messed around in a room just like that while we waited for our moms to finish. Besides the jumpscare I got, it instantly sent me back to when I was younger, the smell of cleaning chemicals and all that.

Maps don't even have to be overtly creepy. Just going back to old maps, often forgotten maps, where the servers are empty, is creepy. I often wonder if, somewhere out there, the old Half-life 2 Deathmatch maps I used to make in the 2000s are still on forgotten servers or in someone's files.

what you were saying about wishing you could explore your house flooded, i felt the same way except i always wanted to explore my house as if i was shrunken down to the size of a mouse. for some reason the idea of that was so cool to me, and whenever i played video games back when i was very young i used to always find modded maps that were like oversized bedrooms just because that idea was so cool to me

I used to enjoy exploring random maps too. There was one I found that was a sort of buildmap but it was really obscure. It was an expanded flatgrass with one walled 'city' that had 3-4 tall buildings, then garages which had elevators that would take you and a vehicle down into an underground area meant for land vehicles. It also had a circular sort of silo door in the center of the 'city' that the garages all faces towards - it wasn't a large city like the other popular build maps, and it was also completely flat. I lost my install and could never find that map again but it was probably my favorite. For some reason it just hit a sweet spot, and I really loved listening to music while exploring it. Anyone might know which map it might be?

about that urban legend about the crazy guy in the woods, probably a stretch but I feel like that one is meant to make you search the woods for something that isnt there which would make you as the player the crazy guy in the woods

The reason gmod is creepy is because it’s a mod for half-life 2 and it itself is a very lonely. It gives off a liminal vibe itself with places all throughout that are abandoned.
