We went in cashier took our order we went and as seating wasnt a problem cus we were the only people there besides the 2 or so employees we sat down in a booth in the back corner. Dad was called up to get our food and we ate for like 15 to 20 minutes. As we left me, my sister, and dad wanted to refill our sodas so walked over to the counter. Nobody was there. I think the reason that ceiling looked unnerving was because it gave the impression that the floor you were going into was going to be an endless empty room, like a liminal space in a tardis-like house
The tunnel collapse is also story telling. Because with the city surrounded by mountain ranges, the military detonated the charges to block off the only exit for the city to keep the virus contained
@@lunathearcticwolfAirborne diseases do not really work like that, since they have a limited lifespan and still need to stick to moisture droplets in our breath.
Theres something really amazing about how back in Gmod's "prime" a majority of the horror maps consisted of cheap jumpscares and the same 4 jpegs reused over and over and now a lot of them are maps like this where the horror comes from the unseen and unheard. Just wandering through an empty map waiting for something that may or may not show up. Really took a whole 180 and Im not mad about it in the least.
It took map creators long enough to take advantage of the inherent creepiness from Half-Life 2. Maybe it's just a realization from newer, younger creators? Because a lot of us who grew up with Half-Life never really thought of the liminal feel of it.
It's crazy when done right a Gmod map has the power to mess with your mind and genuinely creep you out at times. The old "retro realism" from the more gritter source games like Half-Life 2 makes it all the more uncanny when you look back at them considering they haven't aged too well, not horribly bad by any means but it's in this weird grey area where everything just becomes a little too uncomfortable, especially when a lot of Gmod maps have these open empty spaces inside buildings.
Totally! I've always felt like the urban spaces in HL2 are like unused rooms in old but active buildings. Like when there's a wedding hall downstairs, and a bunch of dusty old storage rooms upstairs.
Love how, with the Trevor Henderson NPC Pack, you can turn this into a truly Silent Hill experience. From both a horror standpoint and an aesthetic standpoint.
Hey Librarian. I wanna pop in and say something real quick. These spooky map videos really mean a lot. Being able to get comfy and watch/listen to these cozy videos is such a wonderful experience. Things are a bit shitty in my life right now and your commentary just lets me get immersed into… something else… You go through these videos like a narrator of a story book and it makes me feel so relaxed and detached from the bad. I really do appreciate you Librarian. Thanks a ton :)
I think the gun feeling comes from the fact that in video games if you don't have a weapon you feel way more vulnerable but if you do you know in the back of your mind that you can overcome whatever you're facing that or maybe it's a part of human nature where having a weapon gives you focus in tense situations.
Might also relate to solving the ambiguity that fear often stems from: with a gun in hand, you're portraying the actions of someone ready to defend themselves in dangerous territory. In other words, no weapon makes it unclear whether the area is safe or unsafe, while a weapon makes it certain to be unsafe. And so, the lessening of tension is from your brain no longer having to be on edge to determine which scenario out of the two is more likely.
This also reminds me of the book, Robert A. Heinlein's "Tunnel in the Sky". At the start of the adventure, a few schools of young adults are completing their interplanetary survival test, in which they will teleport to another planet and must survive for 2 weeks while travelling to a separate teleport site to return. (I think it was 2 weeks?) The person we're following is strongly recommended not to take a firearm with them by their mentor, advice which they begrudgingly follow, and upon reaching the planet they are terrified and being as sneaky as possible because of it. But they did reasonably well to survive. Had they brought a firearm, they might have confronted the unknown instead, or at least not have paid as much attention to covering their tracks, and got themselves killed. Someone else sure did. Also the warning about the nasty creature on the planet, the 'Stobor' was a nice touch. Definitely a good read.
Doesn’t apply just to video games, I can be going about my day normally with no worry, arm brushes the front of my leg or inside my jacket and doesn’t feel that concealed holster, instant panic, then again that could be because I live in a dried up factory town where the factory has been closed for about 20 years, population is only around 2,000 but there’s 5 known gangs operating in the area including Bloods, Cripps, and MS13, I generally carry everywhere I go, keep about 100 rounds of spare ammo in my vehicle, a shotgun under the backseat, and a 8.5 inch AR pistol in 300blk tucked between my passenger seat and my console.
@@Thunderchicken69 Yeah if I could carry in the state I'm in I would, unfortunately I have to settle for a pocket knife and a full sized fixed blade combat knife. But once I'm out of California I'm gonna be carrying whenever possible.
It gets scary everytime you peek/look around the corner, i have played enough horror games to know that corners are the scariest things when you're exploring areas
1:16:18 You might be thinking of Megalophobia, which is a fear of massive things. Fog isn't inherent to the fear, but many examples of Megalophobic images contain fog due to its ability to imply even greater size than is already apparent. I wouldn't exactly say I have the phobia, but I do feel it more than most and I can confirm that this map absolutely falls in the category.
This mod feels more than *just* quiet, the whole world is in this state of hyper silence- It feels like if he fired his gun the ENTIRE map would hear it
What I really loved about this Map is that some of the traffic Cars were real Cars. There was a Trabant (East German Commie Box of the Cold War), a Ford Crown Victoria, a Ford F150 as Ambulances, it's very cool and makes it that much more immersive.
The Librarian in NH2: "Oh, an abandoned hospital full of monsters, mannequins and ghost girls? How blasé!" *Yawn* The Librarian in an empty GMod RP map: "I am going mad from constant terror, I can't take it!" *Gets scared of ellipses*
I'd love it if he explored Never Lose Hope Hospital in Garry's Mod. There's two versions. One that is abandoned and rundown like it is in Nightmare House 2 and another that resembles how the place likely looked when it was still in operation.
Honestly, as another viewer pointed out already, thats mostly due to the fear of the unknown. A lot of horror games play with it only to some degree where it cant fully become fear of the unknown but instead fear of being helpless. Both are very similar but only one can truly terrify you. In NH2 you are at first somewhat helpless but the situations arent impossible to be survived. Then later you get a gun and... yea the horror part is kinda out of the window by that point. Then lets take Outlast and Outlast 2 for example as well where you cant fight back at all. You are helpless but you somewhat know whats coming for you. Its horrifying till you know you can hide and they cant get you. But take an empty city, an eerie athmosphere and the background knowledge of a plague having happened of likely the zombie kind? Who knows what could lurk behind the next tree, car or door. You dont, I dont, he doesnt, no one does. AND THAT is the beauty of fear of the unknown. The fact that not a single one of us will know whats coming next. And I HATE IT xD
NH2 is one of the least scary games you could play, the only time it scares you is when it plays a ear piercingly loud sound effect because the creator apparently couldnt mix the sounds right
So it's 1:30 AM for me while I started this, I watched from start to beginning, felt evey "jumpscare" that technically wasn't even there. This map was something else truly, terrifying in its own right, and terrifying even without all of the silent hill assets
The map maker used quite a bit from Left 4 Dead, Kingdom Come (believe it or not), CS:GO, and Silent Hill. Various locations aren't 1 to 1 but are pretty decent recreations.
@@damianpalavecino3061 It isn't 1 to 1. I've played Left 4 Dead and I can for certain that the barn area isn't exactly the same as the one from Left 4 Dead 1/2. It uses the same assets but that's about it.
The different inspirations and vibes this map had in it's creation is truly interesting. Out in the (I guess) country side across from the bridge everything just has such a Day Z feeling crossed a tiny bit with Alan Wake. The geography of the area and the eastern European assets like the trains just makes it feel ripped right out of Stalker through and through. Then though once you get to the city everything is much more Left 4 Dead feeling with a very American styled city in complete chaos the way Left 4 Dead levels portray that exact disarray, and frankly the reused Left 4 Dead assets only adds to this. But then once you have the map figured out out of nowhere the map just goes fully Silent Hill in places like the morgue, the underground, the apartments, and the church with insane metallic architecture and rusting on everything that is completely ripped out of the otherworld while the church and apartments feel like something in the fog world. It's just so out of nowhere given the rest of the normal-ish map.

I love your hour long creepy gmod videos Mr librarian, the sound design of the maps and your voice being so real, makes it seem like a relaxation video but with a great twist, keep up the great work!!
9:22 The ceiling looks almost infinitely larger than it should be. It's due to the smoothness, distance, lighting and framing of the staircase. An optical, spatial illusion.
Something that really gets me in creepy settings like this is ambiance with low, pulsing bass drones, like in the facility around 31:40 onwards. Especially if it sounds vaguely music-like, but not entirely - sort of a phonic uncanny valley effect, also giving off a feeling like the place you're in is somehow alive, and you're hearing the beating of some incomprehensible heart it might have.
The thing that would get me is the lack of human corpses, an apocalyptic event happened, a hell of a lot of deaths are implied. Where are all the bodies? That crashed plane for example should have been packed, but there was nothing, and that sent chills through me.
Usually RP maps don't have any major jumpscares or triggered events, if they do it's mostly in easter eggs. This is meant to be played on an RP server, and having triggered events round about isn't going to do well on a server. However, the ambiance is great in this one. Really gives you the heebie jeebies.
13:20 I got that feeling a LOT in Alyx, sometimes I'd walk into a particular room and get overwhelmed at how real the room felt. There are a lot of near-photorealistic rooms in that game that sink you one level deeper into the immersion.
This is one of the best "in-game found footage" style videos I've ever seen, and the reason why I categorize it as so, is because it genuinely seemed as if you were there! You immersed yourself so well and this video overall is fantastic my man, good job and thanks for putting it out there :)
The feeling of being watched even though there is literaly nothing "scary" on this map really proves that terror often superior to other forms of horror.
6:41 - my favorite speech! "We've got a couple of things going on for us. One; I know it's just a game and I can always take the headset off and nothing can really hurt me. Two; I have you guys, you're here with me in spirit. Three; *_I have a glock._* "

Been bingeing your VR explorations, this one's old as fuck but just wanna express how cute n chill these VR videos are. Someone bumbling around in normal 1st person is so much more (aggravating? Boring?) than when you can actually see their head movements and gesticulations
Great video, when it comes to walking up the stairs it have been always scary for me, cuz you dont know whats up there and if something attacks you its hard to escape, i live in a Soviet style apartment and walking up the staircase is always creepy at night
I like the breaking bad reference at the police department. As you mentioned the fear of structures in the fog I 100% have that fear lol, specifically transmission towers and radio masts.
22:46 This setup with the evidence room almost got passed me until realizing the box-truck was on the other side of the wall. I then realized it was likely an homage to the hard drive erasure scene in Breaking Bad.
I'm astounded at the actual effect watching this map has had on me. I've had a pretty nice and calm day, but after just kinda existing in this space virtually for a while I've come away feeling kinda chilly, and with that kinda lonesome melancholy feeling you get when it gets more autumnal outside. I know it's completely psychosomatic, but it's just really interesting how these virtual spaces can affect our (or at least my) mental state here in the real world.
@9:28 I think it's that dingy shade of yellow. As put by 'The Dungeon Alphabet' "In those dank catacombs, yellows come not in bright, cheerful hues, but in faded tinctures of age and rot. It is a sickly shade, calling to mind craven fear, shattering madness, and the unstoppable march of the grave." Ever since I read that entry I notice those darker shades of yellow in all sorts of horror works, from the backrooms to that scene in Insidious Ch 2 where they find the secret room with all the corpses. Dingy yellow is just this unsettling color of decrepitude and forgotten spaces, its a color I can smell; dusty and musty like an old library or bookstore.
There's something about this one map that keeps me coming back to it. It's so massive, yet detailed, and it holds a creepy yet calm tone for most of it. Then you open the wrong door.
With being able to go to such distant places in this map and how often you pointed it out, it kind of reminds me of how it felt looking at the old Playstation game Spyro's skyboxes, they used to look like you could go there and I remember trying to fly to them. Watching this feels like what it would have been like to shatter that boundary.
The tunnel at 1:33:30 (seen before from another side) reminds me of the movie Tremors. It's like they dug up and creatures from another time came out and caused this chaos. Greetings and thanks for the virtual exploration.
This was really nice, cozy, comfy, and focusing (which is really important for me as someone who can barely focus worth a damn) Thanks for making videos like this!
Been working for several days in a row now. Finally, got a break. This will be wonderful to sit down, watch, and eat some lasagne and drink some tea to.
Considering how the mind can make you Feel not alone in the map Such as when you open a door to an Empty building...Your Mind tells you you might not be alone. Also could be handy to have a Map for this Map.
The city reminds me of GTA 4's Liberty City. There were parts on some of the islands where less npcs would spawn and I would absolutely hate it and would book it straight back to central park or times square.
This map I believe is an inspiration of Asheville from silent hill 4. The buildings, the morgue, the church. I think in the room in silent hill 4 has a picture of the church that looks very similar to the one in this map.
So much effort commenting taking ACTUAL time to explain and explore every corner. my opinion ur perfect explorer im really wondering how u not 100k subs.
how to make a scary map is to not have any scares in it, just make it super big and realistic but super empty and peoples minds will do the rest of the work because of the eeriness makes peoples minds say "when I open this door a person will be there" or imagine that something moved but something actually didn't, or they will imagine a chair as a person. its like because nothing is happening our mind is more alert so we always think that something is gonna happen
Idk why but is alway scary in gmod map when you play alone is happend to every map and i'm not gonna lie man gmod is make me paranoid when i'm play alone in every vale game is feel like someone watching me or even stalking me is make me paranoid of my own step sound like i thought someone is walking behind me
I would honestly buy a vr headset if THIS was what the games were like (but more polish and vr intractability), just pure environmental storytelling, pure atmosphere, it's incredible it can subtly tell so much without a single word
Ross Scott, the man behind Freeman's Mind, once did a video describing a piece of software he considered his 'dream program'. Essentially, just a suite of software that could convert a 3D space from any game into a generic engine in a way that means it will always be accessible, particularly for online games that rely on a central server. Even ignoring the potential for archival purposes, I really wish we had something like that solely for the potential worlds we could explore in VR. The idea of strolling through something like The Silent Cartographer or the Library from Halo alone would get me to spend a LOT of money.
Gmod is not surprisingly, a great work. it looks good, operates well, has had coding since 2005. (Source). It will run 4k textures, run VR, uses hyperdynamic lighting, is the founder of HDR, and HL2 Lost Coast SHIPPED WITH RAY TRACING in 2005 (before ray tracing was truly implemented into HL2 for EP1. it in itself is an enigma. its a game, but its able to play 4k textures, and you can remake full on MW2 scenarios. why is this surprising? there is no game out there at Gmod's level of content, community, and 3rd party deving.
See?... That wasn't so scary, now. Was it?... Sometimes those creepy objects still get behind you, especially, when you turn your back to them... Oh... That "second" crow, as you referred to it as, was actually a raven, which are common to the UK. You reminded me a lot of Barnie fife, when you dropped that live grenade. You were wound tighter than a violin, just ready to snap. Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing it. :)
I'm literally watching this in my room, and with the lights off. The scary noises and the paranoia just filling me with fear, with nothing but a feeling of something about to pop up. It scared me so much I had a tear. When he entered the morgue, it was so unsettling because of all of the dead bodies. I've never felt so much of being a pussy after watching this. But overall thanks for the video bro, really unsettling but that's the point. I don't know why but I like videos like this.
1:16:20 The fear of this can be called Megalophobia, fear of giant objects and structures, But I also think it goes with the fog, Cause it makes it look bigger and the fog is hiding something or a part of this object.
It’s fascinating how exploring such a large map can still come across as unnerving and terrifying, without anything actually coming to get you the whole time. Playing in VR only makes the experience better. I was on edge just by watching.
Holy shit I'm an hour and 40 minutes in and there's still no end to the map geez that dude did his thing on this game. I hope whoever made this game is a billionaire cuz he deserves to be for sure
I've been slowly watching these gmod exploration videos for a week now and I gotta say: so far this one has the highest number of quotes that belong on a cross stitch
This map seems to be built for people that have Megalophobia (fear of large objects), Homichlophobia (fear of fog), and sorta Nosophobia (the fear of contracting a disease or plagues in general).
Man I’m loving these videos! It’s crazy the amount of talent some of these map builders have. The underground portion was very unsettling. I was feeling the same way as you when you said you wanted to just get out. Can’t imagine what that felt like in VR. Such a good map! Hope you do more of these videos where your just exploring and taking your time. Something about it is very relaxing and spooky at the same time
1:02:17 just by this part alone the barricade with the piles of bodies make me think the map takes place after a zombie apocalypse. the bodies look in very bad shape and the barricade have sand bags placed (i think its sand i dont know much about army stuff) indicating that guns where set up there at some point.
And yes whilst sandbag barricades are okay for using guns but it’s not always a indicator for weapons like that. Concrete barriers work just as well especially vs melee targets

Condemned: Criminal Origins has some insane liminal-like atmosphere. I highly recommend you do a playthrough on the channel.

Resident Evil Door moment:
This really feels like a lost city documentary where the guy filming this is actually in this area.
In a way...it's peaceful.
Love how, with the Trevor Henderson NPC Pack, you can turn this into a truly Silent Hill experience. From both a horror standpoint and an aesthetic standpoint.
I could just imagine The Wandering Faith just looming in the distance through the fog on this map.

@@arouraadkomusic4668 shiiit… thanks a ton. It’s rare to see random strangers so nice 😊
i completely relate and agree with you, i really hope he sees this comment as i think its how a lot of us feel.
Feel this. Librarian is the best tour guide for some dark places, in more than one meaning of that sentence, huh..
I know that feel all too well, hope your life will improve soon, and don't be afraid to reach out if you need some one to talk to.
I think the gun feeling comes from the fact that in video games if you don't have a weapon you feel way more vulnerable but if you do you know in the back of your mind that you can overcome whatever you're facing that or maybe it's a part of human nature where having a weapon gives you focus in tense situations.
Yeah, the hope of being able to defend yourself is more comforting than only having running away as your lifeline in case a danger presents itself.
(I think it was 2 weeks?)
The person we're following is strongly recommended not to take a firearm with them by their mentor, advice which they begrudgingly follow, and upon reaching the planet they are terrified and being as sneaky as possible because of it.
40:43 this was truly the scariest part of this gmod map
1:25:29 this part was pretty scary to me
It gets scary everytime you peek/look around the corner, i have played enough horror games to know that corners are the scariest things when you're exploring areas

That's just the plot of Cry of Fear
The Librarian in NH2: "Oh, an abandoned hospital full of monsters, mannequins and ghost girls? How blasé!"
*Yawn*
The Librarian in an empty GMod RP map: "I am going mad from constant terror, I can't take it!"
*Gets scared of ellipses*
That's the fear of unknown, it's really not that scary entering a house where you KNOW monstrs are in than having no idea of what's waiting for you.
And I HATE IT xD
ambiance is scarier than loud noises tbh
NH2 is one of the least scary games you could play, the only time it scares you is when it plays a ear piercingly loud sound effect because the creator apparently couldnt mix the sounds right

So it's 1:30 AM for me while I started this, I watched from start to beginning, felt evey "jumpscare" that technically wasn't even there. This map was something else truly, terrifying in its own right, and terrifying even without all of the silent hill assets
Hard not to see that the final map of Blood Harvest from L4D was the inspiration here, keep having to doubletake at a lot of turns
The map maker used quite a bit from Left 4 Dead, Kingdom Come (believe it or not), CS:GO, and Silent Hill. Various locations aren't 1 to 1 but are pretty decent recreations.
@@Techhunter_Talon Damn, nice. The central barn just stood out so much I didnt notice anything else

@@damianpalavecino3061 It isn't 1 to 1. I've played Left 4 Dead and I can for certain that the barn area isn't exactly the same as the one from Left 4 Dead 1/2. It uses the same assets but that's about it.

"And I also got this glock"

1:40:05

Usually RP maps don't have any major jumpscares or triggered events, if they do it's mostly in easter eggs. This is meant to be played on an RP server, and having triggered events round about isn't going to do well on a server. However, the ambiance is great in this one. Really gives you the heebie jeebies.
The vibe changed so fast when he went into the morgue
13:20 I got that feeling a LOT in Alyx, sometimes I'd walk into a particular room and get overwhelmed at how real the room felt. There are a lot of near-photorealistic rooms in that game that sink you one level deeper into the immersion.

22:46 This setup with the evidence room almost got passed me until realizing the box-truck was on the other side of the wall. I then realized it was likely an homage to the hard drive erasure scene in Breaking Bad.
That's what I instantly thought of when I saw all the toppled-over storage units. The truck leaning on the building only confirmed it.
Really love the exploring videos, especially the longer ones, reminds me of Venturion Tale which makes me super nostalgic
The fear in the man's voice tells me how much the creator knows about human fears when it comes to horror games. People like that are rare.
this feels so special, i love these VR videos, it feels like you're exploring alternate realities and itches that horror i desperately need
Hope you keep doing videos in the same style as this, love your exploration of horror or just atmospheric maps. You are killing it!

how to make a scary map is to not have any scares in it, just make it super big and realistic but super empty and peoples minds will do the rest of the work because of the eeriness makes peoples minds say "when I open this door a person will be there" or imagine that something moved but something actually didn't, or they will imagine a chair as a person. its like because nothing is happening our mind is more alert so we always think that something is gonna happen
When I remember a VR experience I don't remember it like a game or a regular memory, I remember it like a dream.

Something about it is very relaxing and spooky at the same time

the barricade with the piles of bodies
make me think the map takes place after a zombie apocalypse.
the bodies look in very bad shape and the barricade have sand bags placed (i think its sand i dont know much about army stuff)
indicating that guns where set up there at some point.
Probably used a chain gun of some sort only to find that he’s out of ammunition
And yes whilst sandbag barricades are okay for using guns but it’s not always a indicator for weapons like that. Concrete barriers work just as well especially vs melee targets
Less of a chance to have your barricade fall apart when they start to overrun the place
the videos you produce are genius , the detail of explanation and description of feelings and emotions really make the videos extremely entertaining
