Pit of Despair the most difficult Mario rom hack level in the world

This is a Tool-Assisted speed run. Extreme slowdown and savestates were used. Please recognize this was made to show the absolute limits of SMW.
You may notice near the end of the video there was a little cut, for some reason a sprite did not spawn so I cut the video and fixed it and came back.
This is available to download on my channel, if you are insane enough to play it...
This took me several several hours to make and yes it was the hardest level I have ever played by far. I hope you enjoy it.

This was made in one of the first versions of youtube where 480p was considered HQ
Really enjoyed this. Level is batshit crazy, seeing it done (even under TAS) is mental.
Chuck Norris plays this level with one hand, while blind folded, and while fighting a pack of wolves with his free hand

This was just mad precision and timing. I've never seen the key jump before this video, or ever in kaizo for that matter.

I keep rewatching this once in a while and i have to say... i think this hack is what inspired people to start making the "pit" hacks and any other offshoots of the similar calibur like "item abuse".
Which in itself goes to show, how far people have come since this.

I applaud you, that's much more dedication than I could ever give to a game except the Gundam Vs. Series cause I love those.

in 2008 this probably was the hardest level out there but know that there are hacks like item abuse 3 or world of dickish moves, this is probably one of the easier pit hacks.
The game was feeling generous, but decided that Mario wasn't worthy of the lives, so it took them back
Somewhere there exists someone who had to make sure this level was theoretically beatable. I do not envy that someone.
This is like a slightly easier version of Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?
Exactly, so watching it without tool assistance is a lot more fun because it ACTUALLY takes skill.

This level is just one ups and bullet bills.but this is the 3rd hardest rom hack I've seen apart from item abuse 3 and the pit of death
So those colored blocks that you cheated death on will do damage. Are they instant death for a super-sized player, or are they just GFX replacements for chompers?
Moltov is a buddy of mine. I was teasing him. I know more about Tool assistance than anyone else on the planet at 152L 644, 5000 miles above sealevel.

the tools that assist you are slowdown, save states, turbo buttons and sometimes even more..
If i were Bowser and i saw Mario do that I'd give up and kidnap Zelda. Better chance of survival.
If this level had a Kaizo trap as the only exit, it would be the 12th level of Hell (#11 has already been defined by the Nostalgia Critic).

@Kpatable But this is, tas means that he just used tools to assis him, tas = tool asissted run, plus he probably did about 100-1000 re-records to get it perfect.

This is awesome. Is there somewhere I can get your hacks to play them? Also, I doubt this is the hardest since the last half of the video is practically an auto-play. But still, it's awesome.

its refered to as "key jumping" its basically when you let go of the key and stand on it as it falls then quickly jumping off of it and grabbing the key at almost the same time its extremely hard to do without using slow downs for most people

It's very much playable. For about 1 second each time you try, until you die. Beatable is another story...
This is an incredible achievement. Maximum geek kudos..
At the very least there were no INIVISIBLE COIN BLOCKS. I hate those things.

that looks really fun to watch, no fun to do it yourself though (unless you TAS). it would take me millions of years to finish a level like this.
And he would have gotten away with it too if he didn't put it in the damn info box for everyone to see. Even with extreme slowdown, this has got to be hard to do.
You know what I like about the Pit of Despair? It's relatively low-level exploit; the worst it does is making you use keys as platforms. Compared to other "hard hacks" that include things like juggling two items while jumping between vines or forcing you to glitch an item box tile to spontaneously spawn a climbing vine by throwing a key near it (or was it a shell?) PoD is actually forgiving in that respect.
It still asks for bullshit from the player.

Kaizo is still the gold standard when it comes to platform hell; among the others the ones that stand out are Pit of Despair, Pit of Death, and Item Abuse.
It's not enough for a hack to be difficult and original, it should also be fun to watch. The three I mentioned pass this test with flying colors.
There are other good ones out there... feel free to comment on them if you like.

Sorry, Fintan29, but I think that that's some sort of special block. Maybe it kills you, or sends you out of the level or makes you restart, or otherwise fucks you over, but I don't think he could just have run through that. Why else was it made so he needed to get the other yellow shell and put it between the two blocks just so he could bounce off it? Also, I think they screwed up at the end, and hit a yellow block. >_>

The playful music of stage 2 must be a joke.
Not automated. TAS means the player slows down emulation speed and records button presses. Getting killed or missing a jump means re-recording from the START. When the button presses are re-played, the emulator is run at 100% speed.

It's a tie between this and Item Abuse. This makes Kaizo look easy.
I did and I beat it. I couldn't even survive 10 seconds of Item Abuse World- it's much more complicated and has only used this level as inspiration. All of the glitches in his video are well known, and half of it is just making sure you stay still so the course pushes you through.

I think someone solved it, although not all in one go because the number of lives mario has constantly changes throughout.
