    Here it is, the final vlog from our 2018 New York trip, featuring a spectacular view of Downtown Manhattan, New York, from the Rockefeller Center, AKA the Top of the Rock. We made plans to visit during the last couple of hours of daylight, to catch the glowing evening sun and then nightfall. Luckily, we were treated to yet another glorious sunset, with beautiful light that seemed to last longer than most other nights.
    I shot images with my Fujifilm X-H1 and X100F, including some long exposure using my non-tripod tripod setup. You can see a breakdown of that equipment here: • Manfrotto Super Clamp ...
    I hope you've enjoyed watching this NYC vlog series as much as I've enjoyed making them! The next installments will be from our quick hop to Canada, with videos from Toronto and Montreal, before our big trip to Japan for the Winter. Enjoy!

    The app myMTA was a life saver for us. Because we wasted so much time being confused and boarded the wrong train going the wrong way and then I saw the app advertised and downloaded it straight away and it helped so much. You know exactly how many stops you had before getting off etc. Which subway to take. Absolutely brilliant. I can't recommend it enough. Really makes you appreciate the London underground

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 лет назад

      Yeah, we mostly just use Google maps around the world to good effect. My biggest gripe though is that I shouldn't have to rely on third party software to find information. It's the lack of consistent station and train information right at the moment I need it that bothers me most, especially when you already know what train you're looking for, but the platform or station directions aren't clear. London is definitely a leader in this field for sure!

    Joe, is the video footage of the buildings when you insert the photos also the X-H1 or the GH5? If the X-H1, do you take the full resolution photos during the video or do you change to photo mode during recording? Great video as always and I've enjoyed the NYC vlogs quite a bit. Keep it up! Great video, as usual, Joe! Just a quick question about your clamp, does it work with the Peak Design capture clip? I looked at the video you made about the clamp and it looks like it doesn't, but I thought I should ask you, just to be sure :)

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure which part you're looking for compatibility with? The plate on the bottom of the camera has no tripod thread, so you'd need to remove that. But the main capture clip unit (v1 or v2) _does_ have a tripod thread underneath so you could use that, but then it would require removing from your bag strap.

    • @robinbenzrihem504
      @robinbenzrihem504 5 лет назад

      @@joeallam I was looking for compatibility with the part capture clip (the last version) that you fix on the camera. I'm hoping to find a way to keep it there as much as possible. guess I'll have to either accept that it has to go sometimes, or wait for Peak design to release ultra light tripods or clamps. Either way, thanks for the answer, man! :)

    that telephoto is so good for street video, am really considering to pick one up. Right now I have the 16 23 35 f1.4 lenses and the 56 f1.2 apd. Looking to get this telephoto to complete my lens kit. I had the 90mm but I sold it. But this zoom range is so tempting. What are you thought on it? I hear the sharpness is close to the fuji primes. How loud is the lens? I heard there's a distinct humming when its on.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 лет назад

      The 50-140 is honestly one of my favourite lenses I've ever used. The range is excellent, and although it's big, it's still smaller than a Canon 70-200 which I equally enjoy using. Take off the lens hood and tripod foot and it's significantly smaller. I don't notice any hum or sound to it when shooting though...

    I agree NY Subway sucks for signidge etc.. London has by far the best map & signage...

      It definitely made me appreciate the user journey far more in London. I knew they focused heavily on design, but I guess I took it for granted before!

    Joe, what was that set-up with the super clamp?

      I've made a video about it previously here: ruclips.net/video/JN_TDs5w94c/видео.html It's also all linked in the description.

    I dunno, I find the subway system in NYC pretty good and simple once you get the hang of it (There are some really good offline apps out there which can help you out too)

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 лет назад +1

      I think it’s a well-connected network, but suffers severely from a huge lack of information (audible and signed) at multiple points during the journey. In comparison to other major cities in the world, it’s a shame to have to rely on apps instead of having the system provide it for you at the exact point of needing it. A simple example that drove me mad was never seeing a map of the line for the platform you’re standing at, showing the next stations along the route.

    Do you like using your "non-tripod tripod" setup over a gorilla pod? Seems a bit more complicated...

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 лет назад +1

      100%! It is WAY more secure and stable. I could never really trust the Gorillapod over a prolonged period as it simply loses its friction over time. The Gorillapod would also often shift/slip around something round fairly easily which isn't great for long exposures.

      Joe Allam Are you shooting or have you tried the XT3. I’m just curious because it seems like you shoot XH1 and X100F only.

    Buying tickets for the subway is the worst. London is the best with contactless payments and you always pay the lowest fare. NYC is years behind. Still love it though.

      I know, right?! Especially with the paper value storage cards still?!

      Joe Allam Exactly. And hardly any contactless payments or Apple Pay. They still sign for loads of card payments. Mad

      Halloween in New York was pretty sweet, but more importantly, the sunsets are epic at that time of year! I hope you had fun during your time there!

      @@joeallam I love autumn in NY it is my favourite season there :) Hope you had fun as well. By the way that Manfrotto set up you were using at the Top of the Rock is sweet. I have that clamp but after watching your video am considering getting the arm as well. A question: how does it work if you want to use it in portrait mode?

    Outstanding vlog. Great images. Love it. Now stop bitching about the shitty NY Subway. Every single New Yorker already knows it sucks. 😂 At least it doesn’t smell like it used to or does it? Lol! Cheers mate and thanks for sharing some outstanding work. Now go home. 😏

      I’m sorry, I can’t agree with that at all haha! For me, Hong Kong has by far been the best system in all areas of service, user journey, technology and pricing!
