Wow! This is a great performance. I don't understand why she wasn't more of a household name in the U.S. She's one of the most gifted performers I've ever seen.
She certainly was a household name in the UK. A stupendous voice, and a very attractive lady, with a good sense of humour to boot! Check out her tv show in the UK when she had the comedian Les Dawson as a guest! It's a gem!
@deeks1970 Coming from Britain and having been around for all of DSB's career to date. An experience SB suffered with her first concert in Vegas, was that apparently she was bounced out of a bar in the casino where she was appearing, for not being white. It is said that SD jnr had to explain to her that there were segregation laws in place that she had transgressed. This experience probably soured her view of the US and therefore did not target the US market as much as Europe.
America has always had very deep problems about race - I'm sure this is why the Beatles took off from day one but mysteriously Shirley Bassey was only famous there for the Bond tunes - I remember reading Bassey's own account of her singing Goldfinger live in the US when it was in the charts there and the feeling she got from the audience was "a black woman sang this?" she saw suprise on peoples' faces - would it have charted if they'd known - or gone to the concert? Very strange
one of the greatest performance ive ever seen .....outstanding entertainer...shirley bassey..
This rendition of hers just FLOORS me! WOW!
This has to be in the late 60's. Her voice is perfect here.
