  • It’s no secret that we’ve used SmartThings for years. But for this video we wanted to review a newer hub, the Hubitat Elevation. We tested it and found a lot of pros and cons when compared to SmartThings.
    I’ll walk you through some of the basics of how Hubitat works, including the different apps you will want to install to get it working. This video also covers some of the more advanced automation options.

    If you already have a SmartThings system setup, do you think it’s worth it to switch over to Hubitat?

      Great review! I don’t see a reason to switch from SmartThings to Hubitat other than it’s running locally. I have looking into the different options on how to build local system that minimize integration with cloud. I can see companies changing their direction in supporting other third party smart tools

      Good review. I don't see a need to switch from smartthings. As you pointed out the app is not the best and my internet goes down extremely rarely. As a matter of fact i can't remember the last time it went down. I use webcore and with the speed at which it runs (unlike wink which i just switched from) is very fast. From the time my motion sensor detects motion and the light comes on (even using webcore pistons) is almost instant. I think i saw a slow down once for 2 seconds.

      I've used Smartthings for around 3+ years now, I like it, but have to say it can be glitchy at times. Hubitat looks very appealing to me, and it's definitely on the rise. But to completely disconnect and re-pair my smart home, 35+ switches, outlets, bulbs, motions, Contacts, Arlo cams, Ring, Alexa routines, and all the automations I have already completed, I feel that habitat will have to be very near perfect. And it doesn't look like its quite there yet. But I see why people are switching to Hubitat. Smartthings is getting kinda stale, with 2 phone apps, one glitchy and one completely cheesy, and nothing really innovating in a while, I think people are getting bored with it. Just say'n, I could be wrong. :)

    What smart plug switch would be recommended to collect data (power, voltage and current) with Hubitat? Also which one would you recommend for just on/off lights? Looking for the best reliable and inexpensive (I am retired) as I can find. Took out all my X10 and Homeseer PC server I used for the past 14 years. Leaning towards the Hubitat. Some of my Homeseer friends are going with Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi 3.

    So, I just installed my first couple smart devices (Lutron Switches) in my house and added them to HomeKit since I’m pretty invested already into the Apple ecosystem. I’m using my AppleTV as my hub. I also have a myQ enable garage door opener that I want to add to HomeKit. I understand that I would need to purchase the myQ bridge to integrate it to HomeKit but my question is... Is there a device that can act as universal bridge for all of these type of smart devices so I don’t have to buy a bridge for every device that needs one for HomeKit integration? Is that what SmartThings and Hubitat essentially are? Am I understanding this correctly?

      With the closure of stingify and the seemingly apparent possible end (or move) of wink it does get a bit scary. Not to mention if your Internet goes down you don't get your automatons anymore, which could be an issue if you are using them as part of security system.

    Wake up light, and motion alerts - I want to make a sunrise lamp, where it brings a lamp from 0% to 100% illumination over about 30 minutes, only on weekdays. I also want a motion alarm to alert me on my phone if motion is detected in my house. Would Hubitat be perfect for this? ... or SmartThings, or Home Assistant, or something else?

    Your videos are awesome. I think I have watched them all while setting up my smart home.
    So I’m stuck between Hubitat and ST. One thing I have noticed is ST can integrate WiFi products into its automation without 3rd party apps. Hubitat needs IFTTT or something else. So if yo I have a WiFi ceiling fan or thermostat ST can do it seemlessly.
    ST can run automation locally. If you use the app or Alexa, then it is cloud based. But the Hubitat app is also cloud based as well. So really the automation should be the same if it locally ran and if it doesn’t use a third party app.
    So if you have a Zigbee motion detector hooked to a light, it should have the same response regardless of the two hubs?
    Am I wrong?

    I understand that Hubitat runs locally but I don't understand how it will continue to function if the internet is down. For example, you won't be able to issue voice commands from Google Home or Alexa w/the internet down and you won't be able to control Hubitat from the app either. What kind of functionality continues on Hubitat w/the internet down?

    You can make your dashboards responsive by going to the settings cog within the dashboard, going to the options tab and leaving column width and row height both blank for auto-fit. You just need to be careful not to put too many columns/rows in that dashboard setup if you plan on using it from a phone, otherwise it'll all be too small to really see/adjust. Anyway, good video, I started with Hubitat because I wanted one hub for everything and wanted the option to really dig deep into it and customize it if I chose. Hubitat gives me that option and controlling whether or not it uses an outside connection to do everything is a bonus.

    Does Hubitat work with Iris from Lowes 1 gen door/window sensors? If so, is it easy to connect to Iris products? I looked a Hubitat before ST and decided that ST was for me but I can't remember why I did that. ST was unable to connect to door sensors, smart plug, motion etc. Thanks

      Hubitat has a specific inclusion selection in the discover new devices section just for Iris gen 1 devices, they are the only platform to my knowledge that can adopt these devices on their platform, Hubitat fast tracked getting those universally adopted to the platform specifically to get Iris users to come aboard, when Iris announced they were shutting down. And they work fine I bought 8 gen 1 contact sensors a month ago and they work great.

    • @mpoole32
      @mpoole32 5 лет назад

      Yes you can. Will need to use community provided drivers for Xiaomi devices and must use specific Zigbee repeating devices to keep these Xiaomi devices connected to the zigbee mesh. I'm using nothing but new Tradifri smart plugs for repeaters along with Xiaomi temperature and smart buttons. Since creating this configuration 4 months ago these devices have performed with no issues.
      It's important to note that if you use zigbee bulbs that repeat or some other repeating devices like the Iris 3210-L smart plugs, these Xiaomi devices will not remain connected to the zigbee mesh unless they are directly connected to the hub zigbee radio itself.

      I have a transition solution for you. Hubitat has a "built in" app called HubLink, there is an even better User app (search their forums) called HubConnect. What either one of these apps do is allow you to connect your Hubitat TO YOUR SmartThings Hub, having your Smart Things Hub be a "remote hub" and your Hubitat be a "coordinator hub"....This allows you to control any device on your smart things hub with the Hubitat Hub......the reason this is a transition solution for you is you can migrate as fast or as slow as you choose all while keeping full operation up and going as well as any more devices you add you can have a locally operated option. I personally have 3 Hubitat hubs all connected with HubConnect.

      @@waynespringer501 why are there hubs needed? Are they in the same location or different properties?

    • @waynespringer501
      @waynespringer501 4 года назад +1

      @@earthworkslandscapeservice5582 "Needed" they really are not unless you have multiple hundreds of devices. There are multiple reasons why multiple hubs are "Wanted"
      1. Hubitat allows the ability to write your own drivers and apps. A "good" (but not required) process is to do these on a separate hub for development to make sure the apps/drivers don't cause issues with your everyday production environment first.
      2. Once you begin acquiring hundreds of devices a good practice would be to split the number of devices onto multiple hubs in the event of a hub failure. Having to rejoin 50 devices on the hub that actually failed is less time consuming then having to do all 100 devices. (fail safe).
      3. My use case is for maintaining redundancy and speed as my network rapidly expands. I have one hub solely dedicated to Wifi/Cloud devices with both Zigbee and Zwave radios turned off, to free up the processing power of that hub. And the other hubs I have dedicated solely to the Zwave or Zigbee protocol with the other protocol's radio turned off, which means these will not possibly be slowed by repeated communicating with the cloud.
      It's not "needed" the hub will handle it especially for smaller network environments, but with any tech the more and more you pile on it and having it computing eventually the slower it will get. As well as in the event of a hub failure, I already have one readily available to transition to while I wait for a replacement to be sent, preventing any downtime. So in my case I have triple the processing power of my entire home automation, instead of having one single hub doing it all. And they hubs are as cheap now as 2 devices, so it just makes sense. (similar to wifi "mesh" networks)

    Q: Why is the v 3 ST hub cheaper than the v 2?
    Q: Do you pay a cloud fee for ST? I avoid all those pesky micro-monthly charges.
    Q: Is the Hubitate software evolving and do you find firmware updates somewhat regularly? If this happens, does it affect your current settings?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  4 года назад

      There is less memory in the v3 and some other things they removed to reduce cost. It doesn't affect performance though.
      You don't have to pay anything for using the cloud.
      Hubitat made an app recently but I haven't been following their updates closely.

  • @waynespringer501
    @waynespringer501 5 лет назад

    1. Although you "Can" install WebCore on Hubitat, Hubitat "Support" does NOT support using it as it's known to slow the hub down to a crawl, and when contacting support the first thing they will do before assisting is have you REMOVE webcore, and will not assist if you have it running.......So you are much better off doing all your automations with the Native Rule Machine, and now with Rule Machine 3.0 there is almost nothing you can't do with it that you can with WebCore.
    2. You CAN resize your dash board tile sizes to fit ANY screen format and ANY screen size device 75inch TV to tiny smartphone you want to use, there is a little gear icon in the top right corner that opens these settings. It DOESN'T also automatically fill in the space if you select which row position # and column position # or by clicking the box BEFORE selecting what device name and device type then clicking add it assigns it where you tell it to, It's like working your way from the top down UI (as designed).
    3. You do NOT "have to" use IFTTT for push notifications, Hubitat has built in text messages into their apps, there is a limit of only 10 per day so if you need more than you "have to" use workarounds and Pushover app is the best with Hubitat.
    I've had SmartThings, $300 VeraSecure, and now Hubitat, and Hubitat is by far better than ALL of them combined, especially their EXCELLENT customer support as most of their staff routinely responds to questions in their community forum.

      After Hubitat is registered, the Hub does not use or require internet to operate (unless you use cloud devices), that is the purpose of "local" the ONLY time it has anything to do with internet is when it checks if updates to firmware have been published.

    My concern is that Google will not allow hubitat into its nest walled garden after 8/31...so you will end up having to replace lots of stuff to use this hub, if you own any nest stuff...and integrate it with Google assistant...not to mention problems switching over from smartthings to hubitat will require all new purchases of sensors and such...🤔 these various companies (Google...looking at you right now) are working really hard to prevent smart home adoption by new customers...people will be afraid if hundreds of dollars have to be spent every year to change things because of a lack of standards or the creation on new walled gardens because of constant security breaches...but this does seem like an interesting new hub...

      This smart home stuff is where home computers were in the 1980s...it took about a decade to shake out...a million small companies, a few big players...I plan on sticking with smartthings for a while longer till the market shakes out...I will not keep spending lots of cash every year or two, to end up with a pretty plastic brick...if hubitat survives to create a second or third generation without being swallowed by a much bigger company...it may be the ultimate solution...but hanging tight right now...

      ST / HE / Homey / Fibaro / Amazon / Google etc. all use one, two or all 3 of the following tried and tested standards - zwave, zigbee, wifi. The hub itself may become a brick but that's just a tiny part of the investment.... you will spend 10x more on devices. I stick with just zwave for 99%, I avoid wifi as much as possible as it just introduces another layer of 3rd party cloud dependence (Nest cough cough)... so worse case, if both ST and HE were to fail, I can fall back on a number of zwave supporting alternatives, at little comparative cost.

      @@marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938 Just an FYI Hubitat is on at least their 3 generation (that I know of) already with the C-5, Being that Hubitat is 100% local, Unlike most ALL Home automation platforms, Literally nothing (going under/bankruptcy/ect.) can happen with Hubitat (as a company) that will in anyway affect your Hubitat Hub or devices attached to it. If Smartthings closes its doors tomorrow, your home automation is worthless, Lowes Iris users found this out the hard way until Hubitat created drivers for most their Version 1 devices that were incompatible with ALL other platforms specifically to welcome them to transition over. The Literal ONLY connection Hubitat (the company) has with your hub is by sending updates to it, (that you choose and are not forced to install like smartthings)...So the only thing lost (if the hypothetical is to happen) is future updates, your current system will work until your hub stops working (hard to imagine that even happening with no moving parts) and even doing so without ANY internet provider. Hubitat (company) doesn't even know your currently stored device information ALL of that is stored ONLY locally on your hub. And the bonus is their company support is OUTSTANDING!

    WebCore is not supported by Hubitat. It's known to cause issues, and if you call Hubitat support with WebCore installed, they will ask you to remove it before they will help you. They mentioned that in every support case where WebCore is installed, removing it always resolves whatever the issue is. You may want to revise your video.

      Sad truth is, local-only systems just can't hold a candle to web-connected and/or cloud-connected systems.
      For example, Nest IQ cameras that do all of the fancy AI powered face recognition stuff.
      I'm fine with running over the internet, too.
      Disclaimer: I currently don't have Hubitat or SmartThings hubs. My current setup uses (a ton of) Hue bulbs and switches connected to a Hue Hub, a bunch of TP Link Kasa outlets and switches (WiFi), a Swann camera system with "Google Assistant integration" (it's terrible, honestly), multiple Google Home Minis, a Lenovo 10" Smart Display, August Pro deadbolt on it's own August Connect unit, Google WiFi, Sensibo Sky for my AC, Nest E for my heater, and TCL Roku TVs...
      So with this setup, I really don't have a need for (another) hub. It is all able to be controlled locally in one way or another should power/internet/both go out, and all able to be controlled remotely within their dedicated apps and from the Google Home app.

Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

    The views on this must be going up since smartthings are killing the classic app and forcing the new app. I’m done with ST. You don’t mention the version on this hub do you? Was it c7? The ST new app has driven me mad for a week solid. No api for webcore yet I’m told, you’ll be just using your old classic webcore. - just don’t delete the classic app lol. I’m about to jump ship to Hubitat as I’m seeing many saying. If the hub isn’t c7 in your review we need an update, and if anything you didn’t like has been fixed in a year.

    • @MrRoguetech

      C-7 is just now coming out, so it's a C-5. What's so great about C-7? I thought it was just an update to Z-Wave?

    • @Mr_Gadge
      @Mr_Gadge 3 года назад +1

      MrRoguetech all I know is “Model C-7. This hub’s features are the same as our previous Model C-5, except in one important regard: The C-7 features a new 700 series Z-Wave chip, upgraded from the 500 series in the C-5. The C-7 has a new Z-Wave stack in the platform software that supports a number of new Z-Wave features, including S2 security and SmartStart. The 700 chip is frequency agile, meaning that every Z-Wave region is supported with the hub's internal radio, with the region selectable in the web user interface. Beyond these changes to Z-Wave, the C-7 is identical to the C-5 in terms of CPU, memory, flash storage and Zigbee functionality, and has the same form factor. The C-7 is FCC, CE, AUS/NZ and RoHS certified.” So I’ll get the latest. Didn’t know that was all thanks, but I’d rather delve in with the latest tech obvs.

    • @MrRoguetech
      @MrRoguetech 3 года назад +1

      @@Mr_Gadge Thanks. That's what I thought. The main thing is an update to support the newest Z-Wave security option. Most people probably don't enable secure connections, and it'll be a long time before devices support it. It also sounds like they're adding Z-Wave network topography info, but since Z-Wave configures itself automatically, it's probably just some info stats on it. Not mentioned is the ability for Hubitat to update the Z-Wave chipset software, so it should be a bit more future-proof for any other new Z-Wave features.
      None of those things would affect the review. However, the app has since been released (ut the minimal features there aren't a big deal) and the Security app has had some big updates since then. But again, not really worthy of a other review. If you get one, it's basically going to be what's shown.
      I already have the C-4 and C-5, but considering getting the C-7 mostly to support the company. And there's not another company in the world I'd even consider it.

    Was on the fence about Hubitat vs. Smarthings - purchased Hubitat because I see that it offers more for future devices.... So I purchased today in hopes of it finding my two philips hue bridges. After multiple attempts it only found one. Integration with alexa won't be helpful because I can only use one philips hue bridge with her now. I have a lot of a animations and scenes set up in third party apps, and I don't see an ease of use with this new hub. Seems too complex for my needs and simple integration with its available hue app is useless. Oh well...

  • @kerosene4751

    I made mistake of buying a SmartThings hub recently, it was a frustrating setup and never worked the way it was advertised to. Also the app forces you to turn on location services, and demands you select "always allow" for the app location access before you can proceed with setup. It blackmails you into turning location services on and giving full permission. That's Samsung for you, and a great reason to switch to Hubitat. The whole thing with ST "classic app has more features than new app" is clumsy too. Samsung wants eco-system lock-in, so their new SmartThings product doesn't quite fit their agenda, and they neglect or limit what it offers. The "smart apps" menu contained one single app when I opened it. "Market place" link not even available on the new app, only classic app. How stupid is that. Best stay away from smartthings now that Samsung owns it.
