  • Photographers usually class shadows as either soft and hard but in reality there's an infinite variation between the two. In this session I take a look how to create something at the extreme end of the scale by making shadows that have sharp, crisp edges.
I start off with a quick overview of how soft, hard or sharp shadows can be created in a small home studio and then move on to two very different still life set ups that make the most of sharp shadows.

Gavin, thanks for going for so many variations on the glasses/sheet music composition. The changing of the color temps, the various shadow techniques (blinds vs foam core) and the distance of those made for all completely different looks and yet the changes were so quick and easy to do.
    Inspiring!

I’ve been working in photography for 22 years, and your videos always teach me something. It may be something new, or something that I already knew that you just reinforced and put into proper words. Well done, chap! Thank you.

Thank you for all you do Mr. Hoey, I’ve recently got into photography because of the pandemic and I’ve been binge watching all your video. You taught me so much thus far.

I'm so pleased you're an Olympus Ambassador now as I've just switched to the Olympus myself. The menus can be overwhelming but I'm loving what potential it has. A really super video. I keep looking on the market stalls for old bottles and bric-a-brac to photograph. Have a great New Year.

Inspirational, as always; and timely to boot!
Having just decided to finally clear all the detritis from Chrimbo, & winter generally, out of the 'studio' (garage for the less pretentious), you've provided just the impetus to get on with it ☺

Hey Gavin! Thank you for another creative and informative video! Your work has helped me become a much better photographer, and goes to show that you don't need a huge studio to get amazing results. Keep up the great work man, and thank you again for everything you do!

Of course it doesn't just change the shadows softness, it also diminishes the detail in the overall shot, which may not be what you want. Though as you rightly say distance to subject also plays a part. Great video.

Great Video Sir Gavin! I've learned a lot watching your videos. Thank you very much. I would love to learn how to shoot Athletic/Sports portraits using just a speedlight or maybe a single softbox, especially shooting biceps, triceps, abs, chest, etc.. Will greatly appreciate a video on this subject in the near future. Thanks and stay Safe Sir.
