    Thanks Sean, great review.
    I've got this lens a month ago for Nikon, as a universal one, instead of a couple of Nikkors (prime + superzoom) and it doesn't disappoint me in that role. Rather inexpensive, but still not beaten for the huge focal range. As any tool out there, it just requires to remember its limitations to get great results ;)

    Another fantastic video. 400mm should be plenty of length for small birds. Set your focus point to one square for those small birds. If using 9 square sometimes the 90D with decide to focus on something else. I also noticed your smaller birds pictures had a lot of shade. Shade is the arch nemesis of the bird photographer. I give up on birding in my back yard during summer because of shade and lack of light. One last thing, you have to be within 25 feet for small birds. 15-20 feet is best. I say all this to encourage you to not give up on that lens for birding. I did a video on my 90D bird settings a couple months back.

      Thanks, Dan. I have not given up on this lens for birding, I'm just trying to figure out how to get closer to them. And yeah, my yard is shady and that makes it difficult because I have to crank ISOs and then get a lot of noise. One thing I can say, my respect for bird photographers increased significantly after giving it a try myself. And I never knew what A-holes birds were. They will not come close to me when I have a camera, but the second I don't, I'm like the freaking pied piper, they follow me around and land right next to me. :)

      @@SeanMiller318 haha yeah they can definitely feel the camera suck their souls away when pointing at them. They are freaking fast too. Set up a bird feeder on your back porch as an offering to them. The bird feeder increased my success rate by 100. Blue jays love peanuts but are greased lightning fast. Good luck.

    Isn’t the 90 D a crop sensor? If so, with the 1.6 crop multiplier, you have a 640mm range, plenty enough for bird photos

  • @MrRFasters

    Hi Sean.
    Tx for the vid. I do own the lens and I like to look how it is used and valued.
    For birding: you need to have patience and wait and wait and wait. But be ready for this flash unique once moment shot. Preset sharpness and focus on the spot where you expect or hope the action will be. And then simply wait. It may take hours ... While you day light is fading ... Thats why it s called shooting pics I guess: it s much like fishing or hunting: it s 99% patience and waiting and 1% action ..
    I don t understand your use of the image style: it s not affecting your raw images. When shooting raws stills the only function of the image style is how they look on your camera screen. So the Canon tech s advice is to choose the Neutral style so you can best judge your sharpness & lighting setting on the camera. Color and lightning is corrected in post. Some prefer to use the Canon provided sw - over Lightroom - because it can best interpret the Canon raw file formats.

    • @SeanMiller318
      @SeanMiller318  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. I agree that bird photography is like hunting. I haven't hunted in over 15 years, but it sure felt like hunting. :)
      I think what I meant about shooting Neutral vs. Cinestyle profile in RAW is how they initially look in PPD. It is the same with video. I have to make more adjustments in post to Cinestyle profile shots than I do Neutral profile shots. Both are RAW, but the require different amounts of edits and grading for me. Thanks again for the comment and advice. 🙂🙂👍👍

    doesn't the canon 90d have a chromatic aberration correction for this lens?

    • @SeanMiller318
      @SeanMiller318  2 года назад

      the 90D has lens correction functions, but I don't know that you could set it to any particular lens. I know the Canon DPP photo editor only allows you to select from Canon lenses to make lens corrections. Good question.

    • @665Thunder
      @665Thunder 2 года назад

      @@SeanMiller318 in the settings menu it shows the name of my canon lens, which makes me assume the corrections are specific to the lens mounted... It would be a shame if the camera wouldn't have a profile for such a popular lens

    • @SeanMiller318
      @SeanMiller318  2 года назад

      @@665Thunder Yeah, I just don't know the answer to that. The 90D has not had an update in quite some time, so new lenses will not make it into the camera's settings.

    • @MrRFasters
      @MrRFasters 2 года назад +1

      No. For Tamron there are no lens correctuons known to Canon. I shoot it from a Canon 77D. It does n t support corrections for color fringing, chromatic abberation nor vignetting.
      But the good news is: we ve shot thousands of pics with it and I did n t found any of these issues in the jpegs. Could be there in raw, but then you can correct with after processing the pics.
      Lens works like a charm. Definitely a keeper and the go to universal one-for-all lens. Top.
      Shot it alongside a Sigma 60-600 and the Canon 70-300 usm. Ok on sharpness - lesser of the three. Weakest image stabilizer: max 2 stops. IS Very strong on the Sigma and Canon: the Tamron was hardest to shoot sharp. Can be done, but you need be more precise, carefull and stable in your body.

    just a great video and of course great photos! I see a lot of videos with shitty photos and I still coudn't decide should I get this lens or not, but here I saw photos which is proof that the lens is a good, even suprisingly sharp for me, and that's the photographer, not the gear.
    Can you please tell me, I have a Canon 200D, with many lenses. 18 55 kit and 70 300. and I want all around lens just like this one, will you suggest me to buy it? will it be sharper than my canon 70 300? Thanks !

    • @SeanMiller318
      @SeanMiller318  2 года назад

      I've never used the Canon 70-300 and I've not used the Canon 200D, so I can't compare these lenses for you. The Canon 200D has a 24 megapixel sensor, and that should be fine for photography. I used this lens on the 90D which has a 32 megapixel sensor. But I also have a Fuji X-T4 with a 26 megapixel sensor, and it takes great (and sharp) photos as well. So, having said all of that, I can't imagine why this lens would not work well on your 200D. Also, the Tamron 18-400 is not very expensive--I got mine used from Facebook marketplace for $300 US.
      As far as comparing it to the 70-300, I'd try to find a video that makes the comparison of those two specific lenses. I also have the Canon EF 55-250, and that was a pretty sharp lens just not as much reach at the 18-400. If you can get a good deal on the Tamron, I'd say get it. I try to buy used lenses (one of the great things about EF glass) so that if they do not work out for me, I'm not out a lot of money.
      Thanks for the comment.

      @@SeanMiller318 I thought I will get a brand new one from BH photo and it costs 600 usd, but maybe I should look a used one too. I think using High ISO is what makes your photos soo damn good, because of higher shutter speed. and you used in camera filters for not to remove noise in post right? The raw file is already luminanced the noise

    • @SeanMiller318
      @SeanMiller318  2 года назад

      @@NarekManukyan I only used high ISOs when I had to. I used higher shutter speeds because my shaky hands would make my images blurry otherwise. I did not use in-camera noise reduction; I reduced noise (if needed) in post. When you reduce noise in post, it causes some loss of sharpness (especially when reducing chrominance noise), so it's a balancing act and what looks "good" or "right" is really subjective. I like grain, saturated colors, and contrast-so I usually just reduce enough noise to get the shadows looking clean and I let it ride in the brighter areas of the images. Thanks.
